Chapter 2: Blank Flank

Blank Flank

I've been settling in nicely over the past few days. Ponyville is a great town. I haven't been out and about since my first day though. I've been sorting away my things and making my new home comfortable. It takes a while to sort away a library of books, several art portfolios, and all my writing supplies. And don't even get me started on my kitchen items. (Consider cooking my second love.)

Anyways, I finally got out of the house and and started towards town. I wanted to go ask Twilight what there was to do in Ponyville.  I was just passing Fluttershy's cottage when the idea hit me. Why go all the way to town when I had a neighbor right here? I'm sure she'd love to tell me about Ponyville. I walked up to the front door and was ready to knock. The door opened before my hoof even touched the wood. Fluttershy looked surprised and shrunk back a little. I didn't know what to do. I guess I should say something. "Uh, hi Fluttershy." Fluttershy looked at me, her face half-hidden by her mane. "Oh. Hi Speedy. Sorry for running into you." She had such a quiet voice. It only added to her beauty.

I shook my head. "Nothing to be sorry for. I was just coming to talk to you actually." Fluttershy looked surprised by this. "Really?" I smiled. "I was going to go ask Twilight what there was to do in town, but then I figured I could just ask you." A slight smile was forming on her face. "Oh, I don't think I'm the best pony to ask. I'm sure Twilight would know more about what there is around Ponyville." Her eyes brightened. "Why don't you come with me? I was going to town to see Rarity. I'll take you by Twilight's along the way." I don't think I was doing a very good job of hiding my excitement. She had invited me to walk to town with her!

We headed for town. We didn't really talk much. I couldn't think of anything to say. And Fluttershy only spoke once or twice commenting on either the weather or a passing animal. It was nice. We didn't need to talk. I think we both enjoyed the walk a lot. We were getting close to Twilight's place. I wish I could spend more time with Fluttershy, but I don't have any excuse.

Just as we were getting to Twilight's Fluttershy started to turn to walk away. "Bye Speedy. I'll see you later." That's when she saw. She had turned around and could see my flank. Her eyes widened. "Your....your flank is..." I looked at my flank. "Uncutie-marked?" It's true. I Speedy Quill, do not have a cutie mark. I am a blank flank.

Fluttershy looked back at my face. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have mentioned it." I shrugged. "Don't worry about it. It's fine, really." It was at that moment that Twilight opened the door. She smiled. "I thought I heard somepony out here. It's so nice to see you two." Fluttershy began to back away. "Well Twilight's here now, so you can um... talk. I have to go see Rarity." She turned and trotted away. Twilight's smile faded. "Is everything all right Speedy?" I shrugged again. "I think she just felt a little awkward about my blank flank." Twilight's jaw dropped. "Your blank what?!" I turned my flank towards her. Her eyes widened in shock.

I'm quite used to the whole thing. I get why others are surprised though. I'm a grown stallion with no cutie mark. How is it even possible?

Twilight invited me in. "This can't be possible. You're an adult with a...a..." I rolled my eyes. "You can say it you know. I have a blank flank." Without warning, books started flying off the shelves. I had to duck for cover under the table as Twilight began searching her library for something. She kept shaking her head as different books passed in front of her. Eventually she gave up with a groan. "I can't find anything! I've never heard of a grown pony without a cutie mark. It's impossible." I got out from under the table. "And yet here I am." Twilight turned to me, confusion swimming in her eyes. "Why don't you have one?"

I shrugged. " I don't have a talent for just one thing. Anything I put my mind to, I can do it amazingly well. I don't know why." I think this only confused her more. She began pacing back and forth. "It just doesn't make any sense. Everypony gets a cutie mark." She looked at me again. "So you're saying you don't have a special talent?" I shook my head. "I don't have a single talent. I'm good at a lot of things. Writing, cooking, drawing, and other stuff." Twilight was beginning to look annoyed. She stepped towards me. "But there isn't one talent you're better at than the rest?" I shook my head, slowly backing up a step or two. "No. I can't explain it." Now she was very annoyed. "THERE HAS TO BE AN EXPLANATION!" I flinched. Note to self: Never annoy Twilight again.

She calmed down after that. She even began slowly to accept the fact. I was a blank flank and there wasn't an explanation. "Who am I kidding. I don't know how or why, but you don't have a cutie mark. That's that." That surprised me. "That was a quick turnaround. I thought you'd want more proof to my... predicament." She smiled and looked at me. "You've met Pinkie haven't you." I chuckled. "Of course." Twilight laughed too. "Spend some time with her and you'll understand how I can accept odd things in the world." I didn't doubt it. Twilight glanced at my flank. "I'm just surprised none of us noticed your flank  when you were here your first day." I shrugged.

We talked for another hour or so. Well, I mostly talked. Twilight was asking questions and listening. Of course she got a few comments in too. I was just beginning to talk about my parents when she interrupted. "Wait. Your mother is Feather Quill?" I nodded. Twilight's eyes lit up and so did her horn. Four books came flying off a nearby shelf. I knew what was coming. "Omygosh! She's one of my favorite authors! I have all of her books right here!" I smiled and shook my head. "Not a surprise to me. You've probably read every book in Equestria." She didn't catch the joke. "I can't believe you're the son of such a famous author!" I rolled my eyes. I think the talking was over. I stood up. "I bet you haven't read those books in a while. I'll just leave you alone to get reacquainted with them." I turned for the door and left. Nothing. Not even a peep from her. She had obviously started reading my mother's books. I laughed. Next Chapter: Apple Bucking And Magic Estimated time remaining: 2 Hours, 56 Minutes
