Chapter One
Ocellus followed close behind her mentor, her saddlebags filled with books, quills, ink, and paper. She couldn’t help but smile, A few years ago she would never have dreamed that one day she would be the personal student of Princess Twilight Sparkle.
"So what can you tell me of the lords of Aquinas?" Twilight asked as they strolled down the hall.
"Um... The royal family claims to decide from a pony named Lux, who holds divine status. From what I read about King Highever, he is an honorable stallion, as is Duke Dawn. Baroness Terra and Duke Umbrawing are both said to be cunning and shouldn't be trusted," Ocellus recalled, knowing that her mentor knew all this already. "There are more, but those are the ones of note."
"Correct, and which of the lords will be in Canterlot next week?" Twilight questioned as they turned a corner.
The thought of next week filled Ocellus with unease, as she knew she was to join Twilight in meeting with those lords. "King Highever and his third son, Aqua Dawn, as her grandfather dislikes ships and Duke Umbreawing." At least if I recall correctly. Then again, it could have been the baroness, as the king and Umbrawing are said not to get along.
"Good. Oh, have you finished reading Clover the Clever's book on glamor spells?" Twilight smiled as they entered the castle library. Spike was flying around reordering the books after Starlight's search for a tome on the Crystal Empire. The scrolls and tomes still needing organization were piled on two tables, along with a few odd scrolls that didn’t fit into any of the categories.
Spike didn't notice them at first as he was double-checking if the last book he placed was in the correct spot.
"Ah, Spike, could you get me a copy of Customs of the West? I need to brush up on them before next week." Twilight's voice made Spike nearly drop the books he was holding.
Spike glanced around for a moment till he spotted them. "I’ll get on it right away once I finish up here." Spike then returned to his task at hoof.
"Thank you!" Twilight turned back to Ocellus. "So, where were we?"
"On Clover the Clever's book on glamor spells," Ocellus answered, pulling to mind what she had read so far. "He placed high importance on rubies as they can be used to bend the light around them. He wrote of using smaller ones to keep things hidden in plain sight, along with the use of larger ones."
"And what are some of the sign that something under a glamor spell?" Twilight questioned as they took a seat at one of the tables by the window.
Ocellus took a seat opposite her mentor. This one I learned for Queen Chrysalis, though Clever did write well of it. "If used to conceal items, look for something ordinary that you wouldn't spare a second glance. If used on a pony there will be small things, such as mane and tail changing colors, a haze about them and they may seem teller or shorted at times."
Twilight nodded as a letter appeared in a puff of smoke. She read it and sighed. "Seems I'll have to reschedule our lesson for the day. Thank a certain Draconequus."
Ocellus nodded in understanding. Discord was something that nopony could plan for. "Would it be okay if I spent the day with my friends then?"
Twilight smiled. "That would be an excellent idea. Wait, they're all in town?" she asked, before standing.
Ocellus nodded. "Yes, Silverstream, Gallus, and Yona arrived yesterday. We planned to spend time at Friendship Clubhouse after my classes of the day."
"Well, seems you can go earlier then." Twilight turned to leave. "Oh, and be sure to tell them hello for me."
A few years ago it would have taken a few hours to reach the clubhouse. The Everfree was large, dark, and forboding. Even with the new path to the old castle, it was rare that anypony used it. With all the times that Ocellus had gone to the clubhouse, she had only seen a hooffull of ponies. Most had been tourists from one of the major cities. A few had wandered off the road, luckily they had all been found. Even a fool mare from Los Pegasus who thought she knew a shortcut.
Ocellus had looked forward to spending time with all her friends. She hadn't seen Gallus for some time, as he had joined the Griffin Army. Silverstream would drop in every so often, as would Yona. Smolder had moved to Ponyville after finding she was fond of it. Sandbar lived in Ponyville too, so he was always nearby. It was rare they could all get together.
I wonder what everyone’s been up too? Ocellus thought as the Castle walls came into sight, with the clubhouse just beyond. She started to walk a bit faster, eager to see her friends. Just outside the clubhouse, Gallus, Silverstream, and Smolder raced about, as Yona and Sandbar watched from the ground cheering them all on.
"Hey Ocellus, you’re just in time to see the end of the race!" Sandbar called upon noticing her.
"Oh, who’s winning?" Ocellus asked, sitting down next to Yona and Sandbar.
"Silverstream is just enjoying flying around, so it’s between Gallus and Smolder," Sandbar said.
"Griffin friend is in the lead," Yona added.
They flew along the edge of the ruined castle, over the canyon and the clubhouse three more times before they landed. Gallus landed first, followed by Smolder, and lastly Silverstream. Gallus was in far better shape then the last time Ocellus had seen him, and his wing alone had well-defined muscles. Silverstream was still as jolly as ever.
Silverstream was the first to hug-tackle Ocellus. Gallus laughed at the sight.
“Saw that coming,” stated Smolder.
The group of friends entered the clubhouse and sat at a round table with six chairs. The sun's rays filled the room through vaulted windows, and there seemed to be a cool breeze that filled the whole room. Gallus was the first to speak of life and what he’d been up to.
"Well, before I left Grandpa Gruff picked a fight with a griff who was fifty years younger. I'm not sure if it was pity or the poor griff was too confused to react to the angry old griff. Other than that, the master-at-claw kept us running drills and repairing Griffinstone."
"Oh, did they fix building I unintentionally knocked a cart into?" Silverstream asked with a sly smile.
Gallus looked flatly at her. "Three weeks. It took three weeks to repair that building."
"I said I was sorry. And who put a support beam in the middle of the road, anyway?" she replied.
"It’s fine, just be a little more careful." Gallus turned to face Sandbar. "So what’ve you been up to Sandbar?"
"Oh, same old same old. Helping out around town and the school and the like. What about you, Silverstream?"
"Well, let’s see here. I spent time in Seaquestria with my mom, followed by doing more studies on cockatrices. Then I went to visit Griffinstone, where I spent some time messing with Gallus. Then, do you know Mount Aris after the Storm King attack needed less repair then Griffinstone?" Silverstream asked. "There're a few more things, but you'll have to wait for me to tell you later." She seemed overly happy with that last part. Gallus rubbed the back of his head and seemed to want to add something to it.
"So what about you, Ocellus?"
Ocellus thought a moment. "Well, a lot of studying and learning for Twilight. She’s having me attend a meeting with dignitaries with her next week. They’re from Aquinas, so there’s a lot to keep in mind when speaking with them. How you say words, even how you smile can mean many different things," Ocellus said, knowing she could go on forever, but she doubted her friends would want to hear of the proper way to bow. Or how nervous I am about the whole thing. I mean, what if I mess up?
"Oh, they are rather high and mighty, aren't they? My aunt once visited their homeland and was told how to dress and the like," Silverstream seemed to recall. "Aunt Novo did say they do know to throw a feast."
"Twilight is having Applejack and Pinkie deal with the welcome feast. Something about how Applejack knows how to feed a large crowd," Ocellus replied. "What about you, Smolder?"
Smolder tapped a claw to her chin. "Other than going back and forth to the dragons now and then, nothing much. What about you, Yona, any world-saving adventures?"
"Not so much. Had to help Prince Rutherford clear out snow, and grandma yak had to go on a journey to the Crystal Empire so I went along. Now, what should we do?" Yona asked.
"Well, how about a game of buckball?" Sandbar suggested.
Ocellus legs ached as she clawed into bed. She had enjoyed the time with her friends but she should have sat out that last round of buckball. At least her bed in the castle was soft and in the morning she could have a warm bath. That night she dreamt she was with Twilight at the meeting with Aquinains.
She was amid all the proud and mighty lords, each one with judging eyes waiting for her to stumble. Waiting for the changeling to humiliate herself and her mentor. The worst was the king and his son, both of whom stood taller then Celestia. Once she tripped they were the loudest to laugh.
"Is this a pony worthy of being a student to a ruler?" one of them said as she tried to get back to her hooves.
Ocellus could see the shame on Twilight’s face as the king laughed, and the prince made jokes about how the changelings should have picked somepony better. She ran from the hall in tears, but no matter how far she ran she couldn’t get away from the laughter or the jokes.
Ocellus awoke with a start and glanced out the window. It was only a dream. That won't happen... I can't make a fool of myself. I wonder if Twilight would understand if I didn't want to go. No, I have to, not for me but Twilight, Thorax, and my hive," Ocellus reasoned with herself.
The next morning Ocellus soaked in a tub. She couldn't stop thinking about the nightmare she had, how it could happen. It’s not like that will happen, but what if it does? What if I unintentional insult one of them? The thought filled her mind with increasingly worse outcomes. She knew it was only a foolish fear, but it still caused a pit to form in her stomach.
After her bath, she went to join her mentor for breakfast. Spike had cooked pancakes and muffins, served with tea and apples. Spike had no trouble eating, but Ocellus poked at her meal.
"Something wrong?" Twilight asked.
"No..." Ocellus replied, not wanting to say what was on her mind.
"Is it the meeting with the dignitaries?" Twilight asked.
Ocellus glanced at her. "Yes. I mean, what if I make a fool of myself?"
Twilight laughed a bit. "Should have seen me when Celestia had me join her for the first time. If I recall, they made me a verb for my freakouts. So you're already doing better than me, by this point my mane would be a mess-"
"Don't forget the mile-long list, trying to use magic to turn back time, oh, and then there was that time you cast the want it-" Spike started to add but was cut off by Twilight shoving a pancake in his mouth.
Twilight chuckled and rubbed the back of her head with a light blush. "Yeah, so just take a few deep breaths if you get nervous, and if that doesn't work I’ll show you something that Princess Cadence taught me."
"I'll try." Ocellus felt a bit better, as she knew Twilight had been known to freakout from time to time. She smiled a bit. "Also, what was that about a ‘want it’ spell?" She just had to ask.
"Oh, she cast a want it, need it spell on one of her old toys... long story short, the whole town got in a fight over it. I think Big Mac still has the smarty pants doll," Spike spoke up again, which made Twilight turn a deeper shade of red. "And I think it was all over a late letter to Princess Celestia."
"It wasn't that bad." Twilight crossed her hooves.
"Princess Celestia had to appear and save the day, not to mention that healing spell she cast on everypony," Spike added in.
Ocellus had to laugh a bit at the thought of her mentor being the one to cause the problem, instead of fixing it. "Well, at least it didn't lead to the end of Equestria."
Chapter Two
Ocellus knew this would be the first time a King of Aquinas had visited Equestria. Celestia had tried many times during her reign but to no avail. Now, however, they had chosen to journey to see the new ruler of Equestria. Let’s hope this is the start of a friendship between our kingdoms.
Ocellus looked at her sleeves. The rich colors made her stand out, which she didn't like. Rarity had tailored each of her friends a new dress to greet the Aquinians. Each was made of the most elegant silk and emblazoned with the owner’s cutie marks. Ocellus, not having one, left Rarity free to choose whatever pattern she wanted, which ended up being golden vines with leaves and grapes. It felt strange to Ocellus to wear something like this, but she did love the feel of the silk.
The horns rang out to sound the coming of King Highever and his escort. Ocellus could feel the pit in her stomach grow; she had never liked being in crowds or the gaze of judging eyes. She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself.
A cool breeze ran through the courtyard carrying the aroma from the kitchen. Flash baked bread, apple pies, and many other smells that made the mouth water. Applejack, Pinkie, and the royal cooks had spent most of the morning away to prepare the feast.
The gates to the castle were open, and beyond the ponies had gathered to get a glance of this foreign king. Royal Guards lined the roads to keep the streets clear. The first members of the Aquinains’ entourage came into sight. It was doubtless his armed escort, of which each wore armor with the royal eagle of the king on the breastplate, with long royal blue cloaks. Behind came King Highever, a tall unicorn stall how stood head over all the others. The king and his son both wear golden medallions with a ruby in the shape of an eagle at the center. Next to him was a bat pony dressed all in black with eyes like pale ice, next to a mare in robes of many colors. Lastly came a stallion who was clearly the king's son.
King Highever would stop now and then to greet a foal that had slipped passed the guards.
Okay, maybe there’s nothing to worry about. He seems nice enough. Ocellus thought as she watched from her place next to Twilight.
As the royal escort passed into the castle courtyard, Ocellus, Twilight's friends, and a Canterlot Royal Guard all bowed.Front left leg out, front right back, head low to the ground. Ocellus thought as she bowed. Twilight was the only one who didn't, as she was meeting the king as an equal.
A smaller old stallion stepped forward and cleared his throat. "I present you King Aquila Highever, King of Aquinas, the Golden Hills, king of the unicorns, earth ponies, and bat ponies, Son of Lux and Defender of the Realm. Prince Caecus Highever. Duke Umbrawing, Lord of the Shadowfort and Keeper of the South. Lady Aqua Dawn, Granddaughter of the Duke Victorian Dawn, the Iron Hoof of the North." The old stallion's voice was loud and clear.
Twilight didn't make use of a herald, instead, she stepped forward and greeted the king, with her own voice.
"Your grace, King Highever, I welcome my kingdom." Twilight stood tall and met the Highever's gaze. He was taller, but at that moment, Twilight stood as his equal.
Highever smiled. "I greet you, Princess Twilight." His voice was soft and warm but held an authority. His eyes passed over all that were attendance, one could not tell if he approved of any or disliked any. Ocellus could feel a disdain directed at her; it could have been any of the king's party.
Twilight glanced at her friends and all rose. "I believe your welcome feast should be ready. So let us adjourn to the dining hall."
"Very well. Lead on, your majesty."
The dining hall was lit through the vaulted windows and the candles that burned from the chandeliers. Minstrels played sweet music from the high harp, flute, and lute, changing the song from time to time. Seated at the high table were Twilight, Highever, Aqua, Umbrawing, Fancy Pants, Rarity, Fleur De Lis, and the Prince. There were also the first to be served, followed by the lesser nobles of Canterlot, and lastly everypony else.
Apple pies, vegetable stew with bread, baked apples, red and honeyed wines, salads, and smoked fish were carried in one after another. Ocellus didn't eat much as she listened from her seat near the high table. "So tell me, your grace, was your journey enjoyable?" Fancy Pants asked Highever.
"Aye, fair winds and weather, the towns we passed were welcoming." Highever took a sip of wine.
"Yes, you will find that all Equestrians are welcoming and always willing to make new friends," Twilight stated with a smile.
The king smiled. "Mayhaps one day my kingdom will show you the same warm welcome."
Ocellus knew she shouldn't listen, but was curious to know what was being said, as the only talk at her table was about food, family, and life in general. Now and then she would glance around the room,; some of the Aquinains looked at her with disdain, which was expected. Even from the high table, she could feel mistrust, and not all of it was from Aquinains. Changelings were still the ones that attacked Canterlot, and not all the ponies had forgotten that.
From her reading of Aquinain history, Ocellus had learned their land was more ancient than Equestria, and had seen kingdoms rise and fall. They had fought bloody wars against nearly every race, some of which had faded into history and myth. Changelings were one of the worst in their eyes; her race would steal foals and leave drones to undermine Aquinas. The shadow killings, the swarms that tried to take their lands, had formed a deep mistrust of changelings in the minds of the Aquinians. In truth, she had feared they would order her sent away, but they hadn't. Whether it was out of respect for Twilight or an act of kindness, she didn’t know.
The feast seemed to drag on, and Ocellus became more aware of ponies whispering. She could see some of the Aquinains seemed to be debating something, and with glances at her, it was clear what the subject was. One of the guards seemed to keep a careful eye on her. She hoped that it was just being among so many that her mind was playing tricks on her, but she felt there was more to it.
Ocellus found it harder to breathe as she glanced around the room. She felt like everything was closing in around her. She needed some fresh air, so got to her hooves, knowing that she wouldn't be missed if she left the feast early. Ocellus made her way to the nearest door.
"So the treacherous bug scurried off," she heard, but was not sure who had said it.
Ocellus found a quiet place in the garden to meditate. She closed her eyes and let the world fade away, every sound and thought, until a calm washed over her.
It's not that bad, most of it was just my imagination. They know my hive is different from the others. I mean, don't they? It was that thought that broke the calm. For all she knew, they viewed her hive the same as all the others.
After all, it took time to change one's view, even here. So how would a nation a world away have a new perspective, when all they see are monsters? Maybe that's why Twilight had me come, to show them. Yet, thus far I haven’t said one word to any of them and left the feast.
Ocellus stood, knowing she had to return.
At the entrance to the dining hall, Fluttershy had stepped out. Ocellus knew it had to do with the number of ponies, which she could understand.
"Oh, Ocellus. I didn't know you stepped out." Fluttershy smiled warmly.
"I needed to get some fresh air."
"I understand. So many new faces, and most of those are less than friendly. I overheard some of the whispers." Fluttershy glanced back at the door to the dining hall. "Twilight would understand if you chose to head to the library or stayed in the garden."
"I can't... I mean, I know Twilight would understand, but what does that say about changelings if we hide from whispering ponies, or about Twilight if her student avoids ponies that dislike her?" Ocellus asked, not knowing the answers herself.
Fluttershy thought about it a moment. "And that is why Twilight chose you, and Thorax put his faith in you."
Ocellus wasn't sure if that was the reason, but it was comforting. Within the dining hall, some of the tables had been moved aside and music was being played. It was a joyful beat that was meant to be danced to, which many ponies were. The only four at the high table were Twilight, Highever, Caecus, and Umbrawing.
Ocellus didn't worry about being asked to dance in front of everypony and found it a simple matter to return to her seat. As she watched the merriment, she did wonder what it would be like if somepony asked her to join in. She knew she would be nervous, but it seemed that would turn to joy after a few moments.
The dancing went on for a long time. A few stallions asked Twilight to dance, but she turned them all down. A few of the mares tried to get the prince's attention but it was in vain; he watched but didn't partake. The king would call out the name of songs now and then.
That evening Ocellus couldn't sleep, so she took a stroll around the Canterlot gardens. It was peaceful this time of day; only a few ground's keepers would be out this time of night. For the first time today she felt at peace, with no crowds or judging eyes. She felt lighter with each step, trying not to think of the morrow.
At the back of her mind, she knew tomorrow she would attend Twilight in the meeting with the king. The thought filled her with unease, but she couldn't say why. King Highever seemed the caring sort, but then again it could have been an act. After all, Queen Chrysalis appeared to be the sweetest and most caring mare, but under it all was hate, envy, and a scheming mind. Maybe it’s just old training from back then, but what if it isn’t?
As she strolled Ocellus took note of a pony sitting near one of the fountains. She couldn’t tell who it was, only that they seemed to be rubbing and stretching their right front leg. Out of curiosity, she went slowly over to them. As she got closer she was able to make out the figure of Prince Caecus.
Even from afar the Caecus looked like his father, but up close even a fool could tell. The same sliver eyes and mane, the same fur color, and one could feel the raw magical power the echod from both. The differences were small: Caecus wasn’t as tall as his father, nor did his mere presence command a degree of fear.
Caecus hadn't taken note of her, but it was clear that his leg was causing him pain. He would wince when he stretched it out and pulled it back. He muttered something under his breath, which was more than likely a curse of some kind.
"Are you okay, your highness?" she asked.
"Aye, just a stiff-" Caecus started to say, but stopped once he turned to face Ocellus. "So the bug stalks the night," he muttered under his breath. He stood, pain flashed across the face.
Ocellus was worried he was going to fall so took a step forward. "Do you need me-" She stopped as she saw the glare aimed at her.
"I need nothing from the likes of you, now leave me be," Caecus said sharply.
She took a step back. "I only wanted to help," Ocellus replied.
"Then leave me be." Caecus started toward the castle. He hid the pain well; had she not seen him just a moment ago she would never have guessed.
Ocellus watched him disappear slowly into the castle. She wondered if it was the pain or having somepony see him in a weakened state that was the cause of his anger. Either way, she needed to return to her room and try and get some sleep before tomorrow.
The next morning she took her meal with Twilight, King Highever, and Caecus.
"Tell me, why is she here?" Caecus asked when he first saw her sit down. Ocellus didn't need to wonder who the 'she' was.
"Ocellus is my student, and could one day represent me in diplomatic meetings," Twilight stated as tea was brought forward. Should I try and befriend him? I mean, it’s what Twilight taught us to do. Ocellus looked to her mentor, hoping to find the answer.
Caecus seemed to went to say more, but one look from his father put a stop to that. "A cunning choice. I'm sure she has many skills that would benefit a diplomat."
Twilight nodded. "Yes, she is very knowable." Twilight took a sip of tea, "So what do you think of Equestria?"
Highever seemed to consider that matter as he took a bite of bread. "It’s a noble ideal, and has its charms. I may even agree to an alliance with you."
"That is wonderful to hear." Twilight smiled. "I'm sure it would bring both our kingdoms a new age of prosperity."
"First, however, I will require a tour of Equestria as I have seen only the parts of your kingdom that ponies call home, so I need to see with my own eyes if the other races-" Highever seemed to consider and glanced at Ocellus for a moment before turning back to face Twilight. "Not to offend your student, but we have many hesitations regarding non-ponies."
Twilight looked in thought for a moment. "That would be fair, and I'm sure once your tour is done, you will have a new perspective on the world."
"If I may be so bold as to suggest where we start this tour, I would like to see Griffinstone."
Twilight raised a brow. "Forgive me, but why?"
The king took a sip of tea. "Its beauty and might were known even in the west, along with the kingdom’s fall." He smiled as he placed his hooves together. "So tell me, what will I find there? Will it be love for the Equestrian Crown, or hate?"
"You find that they are loyal to the crown, and the ideals of friendship."
"I'm sure I will see if you speak truly. For now, let us toast." Highever raised his cup. "To Equestria, and our future friendship." He offered a toast.
"To Equestria, and to new friends," Twilight said to the king's toast.
Chapter Three
It was a surprise to Ocellus when she heard King Highever request to start the tour at Griffinstone. Now the once-great city loomed ahead, and many of the nests had beams holding them up, while others had given way. The griffin army worked to clear away the debris. Ocellus glanced around to see if she could spot Gallus, but he must have been in another part of the city.
All the king's party glanced around. Some seemed to find it amusing, like Duke Umbrawing. Others had looks of pity like Aqua. Others showed no emotion as they looked from ruin to ruin. Highever and Caecus's faces were stone, not betraying any of their thoughts.
Ocellus had learned as a nymph to watch and read the faces and motions of others. A sigh, a smile, where eyes looked, even how one stood could give away their thoughts. She had not noticed on the first day she saw the King and his son, but both carried themselves like changelings, tried to control their faces and movements. She didn't believe either had sinister intentions, yet one could never be sure, as Queen Chrysalis could greet you warmly, making one believe she was truly a friend, before driving the knife into your back.
King Highever studied the sight. The ruin and poverty were clear for all to witness. He turned to face Twilight. "There are many reasons this makes me uneasy at an alliance. It wouldn't take much to set them to rebel against you."
"I know it may appear that way." Twilight glanced toward the construction of new homes and shops. There was a mix of ponies and griffons working together. "But under my orders gold, wood, and stone, have been sent. Ponies and griffons worked to rebuild what was lost. Given time, Griffinstone will once again regain its lost glory."
Duke Umbrawing laughed a bit. "A sweet dream, but last I checked its lost glory included raiding pony towns and the enslavement of other races."
"Those ways ended long ago under King Grover," Twilight pointed out, "and none are eager to return to them."
"Are you sure?" Umbrawing gave a toothy smile.
"Yes, they are loyal to the Equestrian Throne," Twilight replied.
Umbrawing knows something we don't or he is playing games with us. Either way, I'll ask Gallus if he is aware of anything sinister in the works. Ocellus thought as she watched a few cubs playing around in the streets.
Ahead the street was blocked by cart whose wheel had fallen off. Goods were spilled out on the ground, and nopony was helping the cart owner. Most of it was baked goods with a few odds and ends. The owner of the cart was trying to move it off the street but was having trouble. Twilight looked to one of her guards, but before she could speak Aqua Dawn said, "Sir Phoenix, would you be a dear and help the griffoness?"
Sir Phoenix was a bat pony guard with deep green eyes, and a mighty pair of wings hidden under his cloak. He went over the cart and lifted it so the cart owner could place the wheel back on. Aqua was busy looking over the fallen goods. Once the wheel was back on the griffon gave her thanks moving out of the way. Aqua went over and spoke a few words and returned with one of the baked goods.
The main street of Griffinstone passed by the rebuilt library. Ahead, the royal palace came into sight. Once a place of beauty and splendor; now the palace was dull, with tattered banners hung from the towers. The wood of the gates was worm-eaten and the iron portcullis rusted. There were a pair of griffins with halberds that guarded the entrance of the palace.
Within the palace was cleaner but was still in need of some care. A good dusting and some fresh paint would give new life to this place. Ocellus thought as she looked at the old, cracked paint and ran a hoof over a dusty table. The throne room shut behind barred doors. The halls were dimly lit as the curtains were closed.
Twilight would open them with her magic as they passed, letting in the light. Dust floated in the air, the art hidden behind yellowed cloth. The rooms were one of the only things that had been prepared for their visit. It was still dusty and had been unused for countless years, but was the cleanest part of the palace. The beds had clean wool sheets, and the windows had been opened to let in clear air.
Highever and Twilight went off to speak in what was once the royal study. Umbrawing set about seeking everything wrong with the place, and Aqua sought out all the good. Caecus left with one of his guards to have a closer look at the city. Ocellus was left with little to do, so she left to find Gallus.
It took an hour of asking and searching, but she found him taking his lunch alone in an inn. "Hey, Gallus," Ocellus greeted him with a smile.
Gallus glanced up from his bread and soup. "Hey Ocellus, what brings you to Griffionstone?" he asked as Ocellus took a seat at his table.
"Oh, just helping Twilight give a tour of the kingdom."
"Hm, so it’s true. King Highever is in Griffinstone. What does he think of The Wing City?" Gallus dipped his bread in the soup.
"Well, he um..." Ocellus was trying to think of a way to make it sound better than it was.
"That it’s a ruin. Yeah, could have guessed that. Well, at least he didn’t come a few years ago. Would have taken one look and rushed back to his homeland." Gallus laughed a bit.
"It’s not that bad. I mean, the palace could use some cleaning, but he could see ponies and griffins working together. I'm sure that said a lot to him." Ocellus was still unsure of what the king really thought.
"What, that we need outside help to repair our own city?" Gallus sighed.
Ocellus thought back to Umbrawing. "Um, one of king’s party said something that... that made me wonder if there is talk of a sinister plot?"
Gallus looked at Ocellus for a moment before he turned back to his meal. "When isn't there some talk of days long past, or some plot?"
"Are there any that the rest of Equestria should worry about?" Ocellus saw something in Gallus eyes, a fear.
"It’s just some gossip in the barracks. An heir of Grover gathering an army to reclaim his family's throne." Gallus looked up and smiled, "But that’s just idle talk. Last week it was somegriff who found the Idol of Boreas, but that ended up being just a wooden cup. Let's move to lighter things."
Once Gallus’s lunch was done he left to report back to duty, leaving Ocellus to return to the palace with just as many questions as she left with. As she strolled back toward the palace she spotted Lady Aqua taken in the sights. Upon spotting Ocellus Aqua came walked over to her. "It Ocellus right?"
"Yes," Ocellus nodded.
"Very good, it pains me that we haven't had a chance to speak yet." Aqua smiled glanced around for a moment. "Come walk with me."
Ocellus was unsure if she should as Twilight could have need or her, but it would be rude not to. "Okay," The pair started down the street past shops each with their good showing through the windows and a few with griffins shouting all manner of things.
"This is a lively city isn't, despite poverty." Aqua looked into a few of the shop windows as they passed.
"It not as bad as it appears." Ocellus replied spotting a few old books being sold. One of which she had been trying to find a copy of.
"Rarey are things as bad as they appear or as good." Aqua glanced to where Ocellus was looking. "Ah, so a reader, when the matter of the alliance is settled you simple most visit the royal library or the one at Tor they would take a lifetime to read through."
She seems confident that this alliance is going to happen. "That would be nice." The pair started walking again.
Aqua hummed a cheery tone as they walked, but stopped once she took note of Ocellus inquisitive look. "Oh, forgive me I enjoy humming when I sightseeing."
"No need to apologize, I was just wondering what the tone was."
Aqua smiled and glanced around at a few of the buildings. "Oh, it a silly little song about brad with the worse luck."
"I would like to hear it sometime," Ocellus mind worked to guess what some of the lyrics could be.
Aqua seemed to think a moment. "If I should find a harp I will be sure to sing it one evening." Aqua looked Ocellus over a moment. "Tell me what do you think of his grace King Aquila?"
Ocellus bit her lip knowing she had to be careful when she spoke of the king. "He seems like a noble king."
Aqua chuckled a bit. "Wise answer." She stopped and tapped her chin, "Then tell me how about Prince Caecus?"
Ocellus had a few thoughts on the prince but wasn't going to give voice to any of them. "He seems different than his father."
Aqua found a place to sat, "Aye, but if you should get to know them, you would say they much alike. Granted Caecus has a bit of his mother in him, but in truth, he is his is father's son." She patted a place next to her.
So his father is cold and distant, and is only acting, or is that his mother? Ocellus wondered as she sat down next to Aqua. "May I ask why Griffinstone?" She asked trying to change the subject.
"Simple, his grace has heard stories of Griffinstone and wanted to see it for himself." Aqua watched a few griffins pass by. "King Aquila was always learning of other kingdoms, of their heroes, artifacts and which races called them home."
Ocellus wasn't sure if she should believe Aqua, or not. "Forgive me, but I mostly go as Princess Twilight must be wondering where I went off to by now." She stood and bow a bit.
"Very well, mayhap we will talk more at dinner," Aqua said before Ocellus left for the palace.
That night she laid awake. She had tried meditating but it was of little help. Ocellus made up her mind to read something, so left to find the library. The halls were dark but she could see just as well in the dark as in the light. In the library were ancient books, tomes, and scroll. The tables were coated in dust and wax marked the spots that candles had once burned. At the far end there was a single flame, and somepony reading through the books.
She moved slowly to see who it was, her hoofsteps light so as not to disturb them. It could have been Twilight up late reading like she allows does. However, as she got closer she found it be Caecus, Ocellus was about to leave him be, but on the table was a map held open by books on its sides. It showed the edge of Grffinstone and a place marked with an x.
"Tell me, do changelings ever sleep, or do they just spy on ponies at all hours?" Caecus voice caught her off guard. His silver eyes showed a bit of irritation.
"No, I just... just couldn't sleep." Ocellus didn't glance at the map, instead trying to pick out a book title. All were about warriors, heroes and the lands around Griffiinstone. "I didn't think you would care about griffin heroes." Well Aqua did say he was like his father.
Caecus half laughed at that. "I have nothing against griffins, just their pride and idea of their rightful place in the world. My grandfather died fighting them, my father rules and protect those who were once our enemies."
"Yet, you hate changelings?" Ocellus said without thinking.
"Aye, your kind is two-faced, devious, take foals in the dead of night and leaves a drone. Griffins may enslave other races, raid towns, and villages but they have an honor to them, but not your kind. No, I bet you slowly feed off your friends and those around, like the monster you are. Black, blue, teal, green, makes no difference. Changelings are and always will be monsters," Caecus said coldly.
Ocellus was thankful that she was at the edge of the light, so nopony could see her sadness. "You... You're wrong." She wanted to say more, to point out how he was planning something, if the map was any clue.
The ruby in Caecus’s medallion seemed to glow, and for a moment his face softened, a flash of regret behind his eyes. Ocellus knew it must have been a trick of the light, but for a moment his eyes seemed to be a solid color.
"I highly doubt that."
Once she was out of the library she went to find somewhere she could be at peace. Ocellus passed by door after door till she came to Twilight's. Her mentor door was open and Twilight was awake and happily reading over a few things. "Evening, Ocellus. Come in," Twilight said upon taking note of her before looking closer. "Is everything alright?"
Ocellus smiled and entered. "Yes, just couldn't sleep."
"Ah, I know the feeling. First the king had many questions and the like, and I had to plan on things to show them. Oh, and the fact that I have been meaning to see what books are in the library. So tell me, what do you think of our new friends?"
That they are up to something and hate changelings. "I think they don’t like me.” Ocellus replied.
Twilight was silent for a moment as she moved the papers to one side. “You could have stayed back at Canterlot, I would have understood after how they spoke in that meeting. But I would have been them a few years, in fact I was. I believed that Thorax was not to be trusted, but Spike show me different.” She gave a reassuring smile, “If it any help, I think you could win them over.”
The last time a king, queen, prince, or princess stood in the throne room was well over a hundred years ago. The ancient throne sat at its back was shaped to resemble a three-pointed crown, with the lower half being like a nest. Below was the table that once held the Idol of Boreas.
"Humbler than I thought it would be, with griffins’ love of gold." King Highever studied the throne before turning to where the idol once stood. He ran his hoof over the wood.
"Grover never had a love for gold, nor hunger for war," Twilight informed.
Duke Umbrawing laughed. "I find that hard to believe if his imperial kin are any clue."
"Aye, and there are some that could learn something of honor from the griffins." Aqua smiled at Umbrawing.
Ocellus stood at Twilight's side, taking in every detail of the griffin throne. Next to the throne was a stand where the Crown of Grover once waited for the next king. Celestia had ordered the crown moved to Canterlot long ago, so now the stand only gathered dust.
Caecus was off to the side of the throne room where The window overlooked the western part of the city, with the canyon and forest beyond. Ocellus couldn't help but note that the windows were lined up, that one could take in the beauty of the sunrise and sunset from the throne. Ocellus walked to where Caecus was looking.
Caecus glaced over to her. "I'll give the griffins of old this, changeling: they had an eye for placement. From here there could see enemies coming from far off, more so with their sharp eyes."
"Um... Yes, I guess that’s another advantage, but maybe they picked it for the beauty," Ocellus suggested, but knew that could have just been a coincidence.
Caecus laughed a little. "Oh, this is a nice view, but this is nothing compared to Highever. Rolling blue that stretches to the horizon, the crystal water of the Novus, the forest of songs, and the red brick roofs of Aquinas." Caecus sighed but kept staring out the window.
"It sounds beautiful." Ocellus was trying to imagine, but knew the only way to know was to see. Which seemed unlikely, given how they seemed to have no trust of changelings.
Caecus turned and faced her for a moment, seeming to want to say something, but started to walk wordlessly toward his father. Once at his father's side, he said something before departing with a large earth pony guard.
Ocellus waited in the Golden Griffin Inn for Gallus to arrive. It was one of the few well-maintained inns in Griffinstone and was also the favorite of the Griffin Army.
"Another round on me!" an overly drunk griffin shouted.
"Where’d you get all that coin, some lost treasure?" one of the other at the griffin's table questioned.
"No my lads, better some pony asking all manner of questions." The drunk laughed. "Pays me silver for each bit of information." He took a big drink of ale. "The damn fool asked about the canyon so many times, you'd think he’d never saw one before."
The lot of them laughed. "Oh, you think that something? Wait till I tell you..." The innkeeper came and gave then each more another drink.
What is so interesting about the canyon? I know they can't be talking about Twilight, and the only other ponies I know of are the Aquinains. Ocellus made a note to ask Twilight about the canyon later.
It was another few minutes before Gallus entered the inn and took a seat across from her. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting long. With royals visiting the master-at-arms has been running us ragged." Gallus called for a drink.
"Understandable. So, anything of note?" Ocellus asked, hoping that Gallus may have been one who was asked a questions by one of the Aquinains.
Gallus seemed to think for a moment. "Other than spending hours a day shining armor and tending to weapons, not much." The inn keep came over with a mug of ale before departing to tend to his other patrons.
Ocellus felt uneasy about asking directly about the Aquinains. She bit her lip as she thought of a way to ask. "So have you talked with any of the royals?"
Gallus took a drink of his ale, then tapped his chin. "Yes... the one with the bad leg." He paused as he called for a meal.
One with a bad leg? "Um... do you mean Caecus?" Ocellus had seen the prince tending to his leg a few times, but wasn't sure if it was weaker than the others.
Gallus took a moment to think on the name. "Yes, that’s it. Prince Caecus." He laughed a bit. "Bet you two get along well, if all the questions about geology, history, and myths are any clue."
More than sure he hates me, Ocellus thought. "May I ask what he’s asked about in particular?" Ocellus watched as the inn keep brought Gallus his meal of stew, and found herself ordering some as well before the innkeeper left.
Gallus took a few spoons full of the stew as he looked around. "I think he was keen on the canyon, and the shop owner." He smiled. "Why, trying to see who can learn more before you leave?"
"You could say that."
"Well, hope you win." Gallus looked at the door as one of the Aquinain guards entered. Ocellus didn't know his name but had seen him a few times.
The earth pony walked up to the bar and took a seat. "Your finest mead, innkeep."
Ocellus looked at Gallus, knowing she couldn’t risk speaking any more about Caecus. "So, heard anything from Silverstream?"
"More then a few things." Gallus finished off his meal and drink. "If you're here next week Silverstream will be in town."
The thought of spending time with two of her friends filled Ocellus with joy, then a bit of sorrow knowing that she wouldn't be here in a week's time. "Sorry, the tour leaves in a few days, but we could try to get us all together after it’s over."
"That sounds like a plan." Gallus stood. "Forgive me but I should be getting back, otherwise the master-of-arms will have me cleaning the whole barracks again." With that Gallus paid the innkeeper and left Ocellus.
Ocellus took a sip of her tea as Twilight went through a few papers. "Very well done, I may have you continue your studies on Griffinstone after this tour is over," Twilight said, placing the report back on the table.
"Thank you." Ocellus looked at her hooves, trying to work up the nerve to ask about the canyon. "Princess, could I ask something?"
Twilight smiled. "Of crouse, what is it?"
"It’s... well, what happened at the canyon when Rainbow Dash and Pinkie came here?" Ocellus asked, rubbing her hooves together.
Twilight sat back and rested her head on her hooves. "It was years ago when the map summoned them here. Pinkie and Rainbow Dash could decide what the problem is they spit up, Pinkie went to speak with the griffins and Rainbow went after the idol. If I recall Rainbow was trapped halfway down the canyon for a few hours before Pinkie tired to rescue, lucky Pinkie talked with gilda earlier otherwise, I may have lost two friends that day. Why do you ask?"
Ocellus knew they had some trouble, but to nearly die over a silly idol? She looked at her mentor. She didn't want to lie about the reason, but how would it look if Twilight questioned the whole reason for the tour? "Just overheard something about it and wondered if it was true."
Twilight could only smile. "You should ask Rainbow Dash about it. Though you should probably take that version with a grain of salt." She chuckled a bit. "I'm just glad she wasn't with Pinkie, Rarity, and Applejack when they went sailing that one time. I would still be trying to figure out what happened."
Ocellus laughed a bit, but couldn’t shake the feeling that the Idol may be what the Aquinains were after.
Chapter Four
Ocellus strolled the streets of Griffinstone, on her way to meet with Gallus. She hoped to get his help in proving that the Aquinains were after the idol. The street ahead was blocked off with construction, as were a few of the side paths.
With a quick look around, Ocellus knew she would need to fly; before she could open her wings, a jar dropped in front of her. It exploded into a grey cloud of dust, her lungs on fire. She coughed and choked on the vile dust, and rushed down a side road without thinking. Even when she was clear of the cloud her lungs still burned.
Ocellus became aware that her chitin was covered in black powder; she felt light-headed and thinking was proving difficult. It was then she heard something move on the roofs above her; at first, she thought it was just one but the sounds were coming from all around her. I need to get back to palace, was all she could think before she started to run.
With the black powder stinging her eyes she wasn't sure if she was heading the right way or not. All she knew was that she had to keep moving. She tried to use her magic, but all that came of it was a disappointment; whatever the black powder was, it was stopping her magic. No magic, can't out see to fly. Even if I could, I'm too slow to get away from a skilled flyer.
She turned down an alley hoping that it would lead to the main street, guards, soldiers, or anypony. However, it only lead to a dead end. Ocellus tried to wipe the powder from her eyes, so she could at least try and defend herself. It was useless without water.
The sound of things above and coming down the streets filled her mind. Ocellus jumped at every sound, knowing that it could be whoever threw that jar. The sounds grow louder and louder from above, and something landed on other side of the alley.
Ocellus's heart raced as the first blurry form came into sight, moving down the alley like a lion moving in for the kill. Two more forms glided down. She could tell they were griffins.
She took a battle stance, knowing that she had little hope if they meant to kill her. Still, she wouldn't let them see she was afraid. Ocellus kicked at the first form, missing before feeling a jot of pain at her side. Then another blow came; to her luck it was only talon fists. "Ha, told you she would try and fight!" That voice: she’d heard it before, but couldn't recall where.
"Fine. What was it, ten bits?" another asked.
The third stepped in front with a blade. "For the love of Boreas, kill her first before arguing who won the bet."
She backed away, bumping against a wall as she waited to feel the cold blade. Through her blurry vision, Ocellus saw another form, this one wasn't a griffin. "Help!" was all she could say, her last hope of that form.
The middle blurry figure glanced down the alley before reaching for his blade. "You saw nothing, pony, so move along before you get hurt.”
Another larger form moved beside the one at the end of the alley, before they started toward Ocellus. “Now, while I have little love for changelings, I hate brutes who play upon the weak.” Caecus laughed. “Really, it takes three for you to take on one mare.”
Caecus? Ocellus would have thought the prince would have kept walking and paid no mind to what was happening. “Ha, you really think three griffin warriors are afraid of two ponies?” He spat.
Caecus chuckled and seemed to size them up. “Warriors? You three are not fit to call yourselves that. Cowards is a better word for you three.” At that one of the griffins charged forward at Caecus, only for Caecus’s guard to knock the griffin aside and bring down his hooves a moment later. There was the cracking of bones and screams before the griffin went silent.
The other two griffins took a step back. One grabbed Ocellus, holding a blade to her neck. “Stay back!”
The mountain of a pony laughed. “Seems I was right, they are cowards.”
“Aye, Titan, they are though I do wonder if they know who that changeling is?” Caecus moved forward, which made the griffin hold the blade tighter to Ocellus's neck. “Careful now, wouldn’t went the ruler of Equestria tearing you apart would you?”
“Why would Princess Twilight care?” the other griffin asked, seemingly the more terrified of the two.
“Ah, I take it whoever wanted her head didn’t tell you.” Caecus moved forward again, before glancing at Titan. “Seems they must have been underpaid as well. I mean to try and murder Princess Twilight’s beloved student. Tell me did you have a plan to flee?”
The other griffin moved closer to his comrade. “No bits are worth the wrath of an alicorn.” His voice was filled with fear.
“He’s lying. I bet he wants the bits himself, or maybe he’s secretly a bug lover.” The one with the blade at Ocellus’ throat laughed. “That’s it, isn’t it? You fancy bugs.” Ocellus could feel the griffin reaching for something with his free claw. The powder, was her first thought, and a moment later the griffin lessened his hold and her and throw a jar toward Caecus.
Caecus caught it in his magic, and pulled the cork and smelled it. “Hm, cold iron and,” he smelled again, “ah, a magic bane with a hint of darkroot.” He placed the cork back in the bottle. He seemed in thought for a moment. “Tell you what, I’m feeling a bit merciful today, let… Ocellus go and I’ll allow you to leave.”
“That’s fair. There no need to die over a few bits, just let the bug go, Bronzewing,” the other griffin urged his comrade.
“Are you soft in the head? The moment I let her go, he is going to have his big friend there do us the same as Blot!” Bronzewing started to back toward the end of the alley, pulling Ocellus with him.
“Let me tell you the two ways this can end: you kill Ocellus and than I burn your flesh from your bones.” Caecus took a few steps forward. “Two,Three, you let Ocellus go, and fly till your wings fall off, and then start running.” He moved forward again.
“I have a…” There was a gasp from Bronzewing followed by a gurgling sound before his blade fell to the ground. A warm liquid poured onto Ocellus’ back before the griffin fell over, with talons wrapped around his neck and a blade stuck in it.
“There… now I’m free to go, right?” The other griffin cowered before Caecus.
“Aye, I'm true to my word, now go.” The griffin didn’t went to hear the end before he took to the air and disappeared.
“Thank you,” Ocellus said.
Caecus took hold of Ocellus in his magic and placed her on Titan’s back. “Nay a need for thanks. It is my duty to protect, even if they are a sneaky changeling.”
Ocellus laid in her bed. Her sides hurt and lungs still burned but all the black powder had washed off. For the most part, she had been left on her own, to rest in peace.
Twilight was enraged when she learned of what had happened and sent out a number of her guards to hunt for the last griffin attacker. She vowed to see justice done, before joining in the search for herself.
It was nearly nightfall when a knock came at her door. "Come in." Ocellus would have normally opened the door but decided that remaining in bed was the better choice.
The door opened, and to Ocellus’ surprise Caecus entered. He regarded her for a moment before leaning against a wall. "Tell me, did you know those griffins that attacked you? And why somepony would want you dead?" he asked after what seemed like an hour.
"No." Ocellus thought a moment." Well, one sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it."
Caecus was silent for a time. "May I tell you why I think somepony would want you in an early grave?"
Ocellus swallowed and hesitantly nodded. Caecus moved to a chair near the desk in the room. "If I was to guess, somepony of note didn't like how your blue friend was asking around. Don't look surprised. Titan saw you talking with him yesterday, and Aqua and a few of my father's guards saw him asking questions."
Ocellus wasn't sure what to say, but if Caecus was right then Gallus may be in danger as well. She sat up. "Your friend is fine. If I was to guess he is the safer of the two of you."
"How can you be sure? What if they’re after him now?"
"That would raise too many questions. Your death could be written off as a hate crime, and Princess Twilight will more than likely find the last of your attackers with a rope around his neck, come morning. In truth, all three were already dead once they returned for their pay." Caecus hadn't looked at her once while he talked.
Ocellus laid back down, thinking over what Caecus told her. "Why did you help me?"
Caecus remained silent for a long time. "It was the right thing to do." He turned to face Ocellus, with a regretful look. "I judged you harshly from the moment I met you, forgetting you still have feelings and dreams like the rest of us. So I ask forgiveness for that."
"It’s all right." Ocellus wasn't sure if this was some game, or if he meant it.
"And I would like to ask your advice in a matter, as I have little doubt you haven't figured out my task, if your drunk blue friend was any clue in the matter." Caecus looked back to the window.
"I... why?" Ocellus would need to talk with Gallus later.
Caecus sighed. "So I don't have to worry about you believing that it’s under Equestria. The Idol of Boreas: do you know who made it and when it was forged?"
"No, only that King Grover found it somewhere north of Griffinstone."
"It was forged before the foundations of Equestria were laid, by my forebears." Caecus paused and looked at Ocellus again. "It is of great importance that I retrieve the Idol. That’s all I can say right now."
Ocellus bit her lip, knowing she should tell Twilight but something in her knew that Caecus was offering her some of his trust. "Why not tell Twilight and ask for her help?"
"Simple, it too important to risk. I'm risking much by even trusting you."
Ocellus knew that she may regret this later, but if she helped then maybe it would lead to the lasting alliance. "Can I have the night to think it over?"
"Aye, it only fair to give you time to think." Caecus stood and took his leave.
Chapter Five
All morning Twilight had been thinking of how to handle what happened the previous day, and Ocellus hadn't been able to get a word in edgewise.
Twilight paced to and fro. "More guards, and a few Solar Inspectors. That should help me get to the bottom of this assassination attempt." She stopped for a moment to look at Ocellus. "It may be for the best to send you to Ponyville until this is worked out."
“Would that be a good idea,” Ocellus started to say, only for Twilight to start pacing again and talking to herself. A knock came at the door, which Twilight paid little mind to, so Ocellus got to her hooves and went to open it. To her surprise, it was Caecus and Sir Phoenix, but then she recalled last night. Caecus more than likely wanted an answer.
Caecus glanced past Ocellus to Twilight. "Would this be a poor time to inquire if you would like to attend the theater with me?"
Wait, for what? Before Ocellus could answer, Twilight took note of Caecus for the first time upon hearing his question. "Absolutely not. Ocellus is safer in the palace." She moved toward Caecus, who bit his lip rather than say anything. "Do you disagree?"
"Aye. Not to call into question the honor of the griffin guards, but without knowing who or why somepony would want to see Ocellus, well... removed, she is far safer with Sir Phoenix and myself at the moment," Caecus said.
Twilight tapped a hoof and studied Sir Phoenix and Caecus as she thought. She sighed as she looked to Ocellus. "Do you want to go to the theater?"
Well I'm of little help here, and Caecus wants to know if I'll help him. Besides, a play might take my mind off of things. "Yes, that sounds nice."
"Very well," Twilight replied.
"My thanks, Princess Twilight. My father has offered his aid in dealing with this matter." Caecus gave Twilight a slight bow before he turned to Ocellus. "Very good. Is evening or midday better for you?"
“Midday would nice,” Ocellus replied.
Twilight at first seemed unsure, but then smiled. "That would be most appreciated," she replied before Caecus and Phoenix departed.
Ocellus felt strange sitting in a lodge with Caecus and Sir Phoenix waiting for the curtain to rise and out stepped a griffin dressed in as old herald. “Hear ye all, tonight you shall which life of King Glover the Great!” He announced and took a bow before the play started. Ocellus had been to a few plays in Canterlot and Ponyville but only been in a box when she was with Twilight. Some of the griffins that had taken note of Caecus, Phoenix, and her had started to whisper.
If they are anything like the ponies in Canterlot by the end of the day they will be gossiping of schemes, scandal, and trying to figure the meaning of her being at a play with Caecus. Ocellus could already imagine some of it.
As Ocellus waited for the show to begin, she became aware of a faint, pleasant aroma she couldn’t describe. She glanced around to see if she could spot the source of the smell, but without knowing if it was food, flowers, or perfume she was unable to find the source.
Phoenix seemed to study the other boxes in the theater, some of which were still empty. The ones that were filled all belonged to griffins of rank or wealth.
"Aqua tells me that this play is excellent," Caecus said, leaning back in his seat.
While Ocellus wanted to believe that Caecus was being genuine in the offer of friendship, she could help but recall his request for her aid in finding the idol. "That’s nice to know," she replied instead.
"Aye, though she does like musicals more than anything." Caecus leaned over and said something to Phoenix, who nodded in response.
Ocellus started to study the griffins in the other boxes. Some paid them no mind, while others seemed less than thrilled by their presence. "Why did you ask me to join you?" she asked.
Caecus glanced at her. "I thought it would take your mind off things. Do I need any other motive?"
“No, but I didn’t take you for the theater type.” Ocellus replied.
Caecus looked to the stage and seemed to smile. “Theater is a window into other worlds, some of myth and mystery, others of heroes and time long gone. Ballads of valour, honour, and chivalry, of villains and noble warriors, tales of romance and lost, what not to like.” He recalled fondly.
“Wait, you like romantic plays?” Ocellus asked, finding it hard to imagine Caecus sitting through a romantic play.
Caecus glanced at Ocellus. “Aye, is that strange to you?”
“No, you just don’t seem the romantic type.”
Caecus seemed in thought for a moment, then gave a devious grin. “Oh, fair maiden with eyes of northern beauty, you wound me.”
Ocellus flashed red for a moment, she knew that Caecus was messing with her and proving a point. However, there was something wrong with how he said it that made her unsure if it was all jest or not. “I… hm… Point taken.”
Caecus chuckled, before glancing to the other boxes. “So any thoughts on the request I made?”
Ocellus shook head. "Oh, I am still unsure if I should."
"Ah, no need to rush. Take your time to think it over. For now, just relax and enjoy the show." Caecus offered a smile before the curtain rose.
Ocellus tried to relax and enjoy the show, but any time she would glance at Caecus or Phoenix they were either studying the other boxes or speaking to one another. Ocellus started to look at the other boxes more closely, wondering what they were looking at. No, that one just watching the show. So is that one, she thought, looking down the line. That one seems more envious, as does that one. She was about to give up when she spotted three who were fixed on the box she was in.
The first of the three was seated in one of the finer boxes and was a griffin of high title. The next was also of high standing, but clearly not on the same level as the first. The third seemed to be a low-ranking noble. There was one thing they all shared and that seemed to be a disdain for either her or Caecus, perhaps both.
A thought struck Ocellus as the second act of the play ended, was Caecus trying to uncover who paid to have her killed. The more she thought on the more she started to notice the griffins going to and fro from the boxes, the way between acts some of the griffins she had taken note of went to the other boxes. Most of this could have been well-meaning, but others seemed unlikely.
Caecus got to his hooves. "Forgive me, but I need to stretch my legs. I'll be back before the third act starts." With that, he left the box.
Ocellus looked to Phoenix. She wasn't sure if he would talk to her or not, but she tried anyway. "So are you watching the play, or just keeping an eye for threats?"
"Mainly threats. I never was much into plays." Phoenix didn't take his eyes off the griffins all around them.
Ocellus wasn't sure what else to ask, so she went back to studying the other boxes. To her surprise, Caecus entered one of the boxes with a banner belonging to a high-ranking noble. They seemed to be talking; not a friendly kind of conversation, as neither greeted the other warmly. "That is Count Firewing Prince Caecus is speaking with, if you’re wondering," Phoenix said.
What are they talking about? Caecus didn't speak long to Firewing and soon made his way back to their box. Caecus took his seat and watch the third act without a word.
Ocellus wasn't sure if she should ask or not, so she tried to watch the third act. Caecus seemed more at ease and watched the third act, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. At the end of act three Caecus lead over to Ocellus, "I didn't think I found a play on the history of Griffinstone entertaining, but I happy to say I'm pleasantly surprised. How about you?"
"So far I like the story, and the actors are really talented." Ocellus chuckled as she recalled the time she and her friends had tried to put on a play.
Caecus raised a brow, "May I inquire what is funny?"
"Nothing, just recalling the time me and my friends put on a play."
"I take it didn't go as planned," Caecus asked.
"No, by the end our costumes were a mess, and it was a full crowd." Ocellus stopped recalling who she was talking too.
Caecus laughed, "So did you wear a costume?"
Ocellus nodded, "Yes."
Caecus had a look of curiosity. "Couldn't you have just used your magic to change into a copy of the costume?"
"Yes, but I..." Ocellus paused. "I just wanted to play the part not to become it. I know it must seem silly to you, but some changelings lose themselves to the power to become others."
Caecus lead back in his chair and seemed lost in thought for some time. "It not silly to me, in fact..." Caecus spoke before the fourth act started.
Caecus didn't speak for the rest of the play, once it was over they started back to the palace.
"Did you enjoy the play?" Caecus asked.
"Yes..." Ocellus wanted to ask why Caecus went over to speak with Count Firewing but wasn't sure if she should.
"Strange. Even Titan would say more than yes about a play." Caecus glanced at her. "I take it you took note of whom I spoke with?"
Ocellus nodded, unsure of what to say.
"Count Firewing is, let us say, one who would rather keep the Equestrian Throne out of griffin matters, and thus is willing to aid in uncovering who would want you removed," Caecus told her as they passed a few shops.
"Are you sure he means to help?" Ocellus asked.
"Aye, and he has many reasons to see you remain breathing.
What did Caecus promise him, gold? Ocellus couldn't help but wonder.
Ocellus thought over the events of the day and the request that Caecus had made. She had written down her thoughts on each and thus far was still unsure of anything.
Helping Caecus could either lead to friendship or ruin, and what’s to stop the Aquinains from using the Idol to move the griffins against them? Ocellus had wondered more than once during the day. She could still tell Twilight the whole thing, yet something stopped her. Twilight already had her hooves full trying to find who paid the assassins and the royal tour.
She could always rely on Gallus to help her, but Ocellus didn't want to put his life at risk; having him ask more questions could lead to him being found with a cutthroat. Which left her with a ponies she didn't fully trust.
Ocellus fished making a list of reasons to help and not to help in finding the Idol again. She went over the list for nearly three hours she came to a decision: she would help, but if Caecus proved to have sinister reasons for wanting the Idol she would turn the matter over to Twilight.
Ocellus was on her way to tell Caecus she was going to help find the idol. However, Caecus had left the palace earlier in the day and had yet to return.
Ocellus had taken this time to learn more about Count Firewind from the Griffin servants and guards of the palace. Nearly all that knew the name held the count in high regard; the few who didn't thought the count had his eyes on the Throne of Griffinstone. Yet, without speaking with the count herself, Ocellus couldn't decide which of the two opinions was true.
She had learned of other nobles through her questions about Count Firewing.
The gallant Baron Night Talon, the hated Baron Golden Nest, General Swiftwing, and Duke Farsight, whose family had tried to claim the throne many times; each could be the one who wants me dead, Ocellus thought as she waited in the garden.
The sound of talking at the other end of the garden drew Ocellus from her thoughts. From her place, she could see Twilight and King Highever speaking, presumably about the tour or the attempt on her life. Strangely, King Highever was tending to a wild rose bush as he talked with Twilight.
Twilight didn't seem to pay any mind to it, seemingly engrossed in the conversation the two where having. Ocellus knew she could go over, but decided against it knowing Twilight would have sent for her if she wanted her to be a part of the conversation.
Ocellus bit her lip and tried to meditate as she couldn't use her hive mind to speak with her mother and father. She had thought the amplifying crystal would have made it a simple matter, but all she got from trying was a headache.
Once we reach the Crystal Empire, I'll be able to use the Hive Mind again. She knew that would be another week or so with the attempt on her life, otherwise they would leave tomorrow.
After trying to meditate, she left the garden in favor of the library. As Ocellus strolled down the halls, she heard the melody of the high harp, played sweetly and softly. The music grew louder as she neared the dining hall. Ocellus glanced into the room and found Aqua was the one playing the harp.
Ocellus was entranced by the music, but stayed at the doorway and listened as Aqua played away at the harp. Ocellus couldn't say how long she stood there before she entered the hall and took a seat. All she knew was her mind felt at peace as the harp’s sweet melody filled the room. After some time Aqua glanced at Ocellus and smiled.
"It's called the Eldling's Kiss," Aqua said as she continued to play.
Ocellus had read of the Eldling from her studies of Aquinas, but there was little on them. All she knew was they were a mythical race and were said to have been graceful, kind, and mighty before they faded away.
"It's very lovely," Ocellus replied.
"Aye, it’s one of the oldest tunes in Aquinas. Supposedly it was written by an Eldling to win the love of a mare." Aqua didn't miss a note as she spoke.
Ocellus wanted to ask more but remained silent as Aqua played, not wanting to miss any part of the melody. It could have been minutes or hours that Ocellus listened before the music ended. Even after the song was finished, the melody's peaceful spell remained in Ocellus's mind. For the first time in days, she was truly in harmony with the world around her.
"Did you enjoy the theater yesterday?" Aqua asked as she started to play another tune.
"Yes, it was one of the better plays I've seen," Ocellus replied.
"So you visit the theater often?" Aqua smiled as the sweet music filled the hall once again.
Ocellused nodded in reply.
"If only we were in Aquinas. There are so many plays that make our history come alive." Aqua was lost in thought for a moment.
Ocellus gave a sad smile. "It sounds wonderful, but I think I wouldn't be welcome in Aquinas."
Aqua chuckled a bit. "I wouldn't say that it would be strange, but if a Highever should welcome you most would be put at ease. Aye, there are ponies I could name that would see it as an affront, but those ponies work in the shadows." Aqua smiled. "And from what I know of the royal family, I would say that Prince Caecus would be the first to welcome you."
Ocellus looked at her hooves, unsure of how to reply. She wanted to believe that it was true, but she held her doubts. For all I know Caecus is only using me to gain the idol and to lower Twilight's guard. "That sounds nice, maybe someday I’ll see it."
“I’m sure you will, and I believe you would find my homeland both strange and familiar.” Aqua smiled.
“Doubtless I would, but it was the same why with Equestria. Forgive me but I should see if Princess Twilight has need of me.” Ocellus got to her hooves and started for the door.
"I understand." Aqua started to play the 'Elding's Kiss' again as Ocellus reached the door.
