Where had it all gone wrong?

That thought repeated itself endlessly in her head as she flew over the land of Equestria. She needed to get to Canterlot. In Canterlot was her only chance to fix this, to make things right again.

She stopped for a moment to get her bearings, hovering in midair. Normally, flying to such a grand city wouldn’t have been a problem, but normal did not fit this situation at all. Night had come to the land, as it was supposed to, but it had refused to leave. Something had happened to her sister Luna, and now she had blocked her control of the heavens, calling herself ‘Nightmare Moon.’ She had to fix this, and the only things that could do so were locked up in Canterlot.

She tried to peer through the darkness for a sign of the capitol city, but this night seemed so unnatural. It wasn’t just normal darkness that shrouded the land; the shadows almost seemed to intermingle with the land they covered, leaving everything blank and black. She considered using magic to help light her way, but stopped herself; she would need every drop of magic for what was going to come.

Thankfully, the clouds in the sky parted slightly, revealing a tiny sliver of the moon. The brief instant of moonlight shining through the sky was able to give her a glance of Canterlot, glimmering on the mountainside. Taking a deep breath, she rushed off into the sky as fast as she could towards the city.

Landing in the city did not bring her any comfort, the normal din of the city, all the ponies happily traversing the streets or trying to sell their goods, were gone. Everypony had retreated to their homes, making sure to lock the doors and windows behind them. Going through the streets she noticed a few windows inch open, terrified eyes glancing out into the streets. Seeing her, they filled with glimmers of hope, as if her presence would be enough to stop this endless night. She wished it were that simple.

Where had it all gone wrong?

Breaking into a run, she rushed down the streets. Even with the scant moonlight barely reaching the roads, she knew the city like the feathers on her wings. Soon, she found herself in front of the castle doors, and luckily, she wasn’t alone. The captain of the royal guard stood vigilant in front of the entrance, his silver armor glistening and his wings held firmly against his sides. He was wary and, she could tell, fearful.

“Princess!” He greeted, seeing her coming out of the gloom. “It is good to see you. Is it really true that-”
“I’m sorry, but we don’t have time to waste,” Celestia interrupted. “Please, tell me that the elements are still secure in the tower.”

“Of course Princess, I will take you to them immediately,” he quickly turned around, pushing the massive double doors open and charging inside. Celestia followed closely behind him. The interior of the castle did nothing to lighten her mood. The normally beautiful banners and decorations that lined the walls hung limply against the cold stone, making everything look drab and unloved.

The two of them entered a long windowed hallway after climbing a long winding staircase. Celestia walked forwards, her steps silent on the luxurious carpet covering the ground. Out of the corners of her eyes she saw the main attraction of the hallway, the two great stained glass pictures. One on her left showed her and her sister standing up to a strange dragon-like creature, Discord, and trapping him in a prison of stone. The other showed the two of them looking over all of Equestria, then below, the cycle of night and day, a cycle that was supposed to last forever. Even in the dark, these pictures were beautiful, but all they did was fill her with guilt. It seemed everything she noticed was trying to break her resolve.

Shaking her head to clear her thought she headed towards the end of the hall where a magnificent door awaited her. The door was patterned beautifully with a sun painted at the center, and magic radiated from the many spells put in place to make sure the door stayed locked. Ignoring the artwork, she quickly placed her horn into the recess designed into the center of the sun. With a tiny pulse of her signature magic, light spread across the door and with a brilliant flash is slid open, revealing a beautiful chest, encrusted with gems, resting on a stone pedestal. Grabbing it with her magic, she pulled the chest over and slowly opened it. Looking inside, she let out a breath she didn’t even realize she’d been holding.

The Elements were nestled safely inside, and even in the dark, the six brilliant gems seemed to glow. She didn’t know why she had been worried, there was no reason the Elements wouldn’t have been there, but in times like this, anything was possible. Softly, she touched each element with her horn and they responded by lifting out of the chest. Another pulse of magic and they settled around her neck where, with a flash of light, a gold chain appeared, connecting them together in a perfect necklace.

“So those are the Elements?” The guard captain asked, startling Celestia, she had forgotten about him.

“Yes, and with them I should be able to end to this eternal night,” she answered quickly, starting back down the stairs.

“How?” the Captain said after a moment’s hesitation.

“With the Elements I can stop the anger that’s controlling Nightmare…my sister Luna,” She explained.

“But…will it work? I know you and your sister shared the power of the Elements to trap Discord. Won’t she have some resistance to their power?” The Captain’s question was on that she had already considered.

“I don’t know. Something like this have never happened before, not even our greatest wizards are completely certain of how the elements work,” it was the only answer she had to offer, and she hated it.

“And…if it doesn’t work?” the Captain was nervous, it was obvious he didn’t wish to offend his princess, but his job required him to learn every aspect of every possible situation.

“It will work…it has to work,” the last part she whispered to herself, because if it didn’t she would have to…no, it wouldn’t come to that. Seeing that they had returned to the castle’s entrance, she turned and gave the captain a smile. “You just need to have faith.”

“I do Princess…good luck. All of Equestria is counting on you.” Standing up straight he raised a hoof in salute to her.

“I know. Stay here, keep the people calm, and wait for sunrise.” With the Captain’s nod she turned and took off into the sky. Up in the sky, she looked over the great shadow that had been Equestria. With no sun there would be no warmth for the world, it would fall into a dark endless winter. The crops and water would freeze, leaving nothing. She had to stop this soon, or else the damage might be irreparable.

Luckily, she knew where her sister was waiting.

After her sister’s…change, Luna had issued a challenge in the form of a massive roar throughout the skies.

“Dear sister, I expect that the new situation of our land doesn’t agree with you. I do know how much you hate to share leadership. If you wish to face me, come meet me at the only place we shared equally!” She had known what her sister was talking about almost immediately. The one place the both of them would go the escape the stress of palace life, or maybe just to spend some time together, their own personal castle hidden within the Everfree Forest.

Unfortunately, the trees of the woods grew too wild and close for her to fly directly to the castle. She would have to land outside of the forest and head there on hoof.

Settling down before the woods, she hesitated for a moment. The shadows from the trees seemed to reaching out towards her, almost like they were trying to warn her, to push her away. But she couldn’t stop now, she couldn’t let her people down…she couldn’t let her sister down.

She stepped into the darkness.

She was lost after only a few steps, the trees seeming to close in around her, their branches leaning down and snatching at her mane and tail. Normally, she and her sister had a hidden path they could both follow to their castle, something they had both created soon after the castle was constructed, but now she just couldn’t seem to find it. Whenever she thought she was headed in the correct direction she found herself colliding with a tree, or once, nearly stepping right off the edge of a cliff. She continued to stumble as carefully as she could, merely hoping that she was headed in the right direction while the Elements around her neck seemed to grow heavier and heavier.

Where had it all gone wrong?

“Yes indeed, where had it gone wrong? Where was it that you failed?” She started, her sister’s voice echoed through the gloom, followed by a sinister laugh.

“How foolish are you, to think that your failings could be traced back to a single moment,” the voice turned sinister. “I can’t believe I used to be proud to have you as a sister.”

“Luna? Please stop this, I only want to help you!” she cried into the trees.

“Help? When have you ever tried to help me? All you ever did was tell me to ‘stand up for myself.’” With those words the forest seemed to lighten and revealed a large open clearing. Seated in the middle of the soft grass was a dark blue alicorn with a beautiful glittering man that looked like starlight, and a crescent moon cutie mark on her flank. The alicorn sighed and stared down at the ground, she was obviously upset.

“Luna?” she offered, moving closer to the other alicorn. The alicorn looked up, but not at her. She stood in wonder as she watched a copy of herself walk up to the alicorn.

“What’s wrong Luna?” the copy asked, “the guards said you’ve been upset all day.”

“It’s not fair Celestia, when you bring out the sun, every pony celebrates and plays, looking so happy. But the moment the moon rises, they go to bed, they don’t even sit around to appreciate the night sky!” Luna sighed, shaking her head.

“Oh Luna, what a silly thing to worry about. The ponies love the night, it is there any only chance to get some rest after the fay, besides, there is far more to being a ruler that how much your people enjoy which part of the day you control,” the clone consoled. Seeing this, she remember when this was. This was an old memory. She remember saying those words, trying to help her sister, but now she could tell how cold they sounded, how…inconsiderate. She could even see how those words hurt her sister, how she acted like her sister’s worries didn’t matter, but her clone was not yet finished.

“You need to toughen up little sister, you want to grow up to be strong like me, right?” with those words the clone turned and vanished, leaving little Luna alone again. She tried to go to her, hoping foolishly that she might be able to console her, but Luna and the grove vanished back into the dark.

“I’m sorry…I was only trying to help,” she whispered into the gloom.

“Oh don’t worry Celestia, I took your words to heart that day. I did become stronger, stronger than you could ever be!” Luna’s dark voice came back, mocking her.

“Luna, please, I was wrong! Our people love you, just stop this madness,” she pleaded, to no avail.

“Love? They never loved me! They simply tolerated me, just as they tolerated my night. The only one they ever loved was you!” Luna sounded so angry, but at the end there was a hint of…something. Behind the anger, she swore she hurt her sister, not Nightmare Moon, just her little sister, so hurt and lonely.

“Luna, I swear I’ll bring you back. I’m going to save you from your anger!” she would make up for her own mistakes in the past.

“Oh yes, you’re going to use the Elements of Harmony, I could sense them as soon as you entered this forest. I wonder…do you have enough resolve to use them on your own sister?” Luna asked.

“I am going to bring you back, even you cannot resist their power!” she boldly proclaimed, gaining confidence.

“But what if I can? The elements are a part of me as well, what if I can stop them?” Another laugh, “Oh, but I know you have a plan for that, a terrible plan.”

“What are you talking about?” she asked.

“Do not act as if the thought has not crossed your mind. There is another way to stop my night. If my life was brought to an end, the spell blocking you from the sun would end with it,” she could not say anything, simply standing in stunned silence.

“If I had to…I would, for the good of Equestria.” She finally stated.

“Really? You could bring yourself to end the life of your little sister? You could bring yourself to kill…me?” With the last word an alicorn appeared in front of her, her sister, little Luna.

“You might be strong enough, you were always better at magic, after all. But if you did, how great of a failure would you be? You could not stop my fall, and will you fail now in saving me?” With each word Luna stepped forward, pushing her backwards while her eyes seemed to stare directly into her soul. “So what are you going to do, dear sister?”

“I…I don’t...” she tried. Luna laughed before fading away, another illusion.

“I have nothing to fear from you. Come, let us finish this,” the shadows faded, and she could finally see the path through the trees. She was close, so very close. But, for a moment, she just couldn’t bring herself to move forward. She was afraid, not of her sister, of what she might have to do. She could not kill her won sister, even if it meant the fall of Equestria. All she could do was trust in the Elements, which seemed to weigh so heavy on her neck. Honestly, she realized, there was no other choice.

She stepped forward.

Soon, she stood in front of a castle, their castle. But, it looked so different from the happy get-away in her memories. Her sister had…changed it somehow. It now resembled a writhing mass of shadows, the only solid are that remained was the main gate and the walkway. She expected her sister’s voice to taunt her at any moment, but that area remained silent, which seemed worse somehow, as if she was below mocking. Slowly, she entered the shadowy creation, making sure to stay along the path. Following it lead a massive meeting hall where dark pillars supported the ceiling and great windows lined the walls. In the back was a small fountain, the trickling of water being the only sound in the castle, and in front of it, her.

She had not seen her sister’s new form yet, the form she called ‘Nightmare Moon,’ and she found herself staring in shock.
Her little sister was taller, stronger, with a great flowing dark blue mane. Luna had changed herself to look more like…her, a dark version of her. Her heart ached as she realized it.

“Oh Luna,” she whispered.

“I am not Luna!” her sister roared, “I have grown beyond your weak little sister. I have grown into a stronger ruler than you will ever be! I no longer care for the people’s love; their fear will sustain me just fine.” She proclaimed, her eyes wide and full of hate.

“Luna, I am so sorry. I promise, I will fix this,” her sister narrowed her eyes, but she didn’t give her a chance to respond. She couldn’t let her resolve weaken any further. She closed her eyes and began focusing her magic in the elements around her neck. She felt them warm with power, but, something seemed wrong. They took so much energy, she wasn’t sure she had enough power.

Please

She thought, pleading towards the elements.

Please work, I can’t fail here, not now. I can’t fail my people, my sister, myself. I don’t have the strength to stop my sister if this fails, please don’t let me fail…

She was so afraid.

With every second, every thought, the elements grew heavier and heavier, dragging her head to the ground, and they continued to draw on her energy, showing no signs of stopping. She opened her eyes, her vision clouding, but she could still see her sister.

Her sister simply stared, maybe mesmerized by the Elements, or maybe she was caught up in the spell too, her energy being drawn away to fuel their power. The elements felt like lead around her neck, and her head fell lower, her chin nearly scraping the ground. She was almost gone, she was going to fail.

Please…

Then everything stopped, the Elements were ready. They began to glow, bright and bright, driving away the shadows on the walls. Her sister shook her head, looking worried.

“Impossible,” she muttered, before surrounding herself with a shield of dark magic. The elements pulsed, and a beam of multicolored light shot outward, shatter the windows, blasting a hole through the ceiling, and smashing through the dark shield unhindered, engulfing her sister. As the blast continued the weight of the elements refused to lift. She felt her legs weakening, but right before she fell to the ground, the blast stopped, and the weight lessened slightly, allowing her to lift her head back up.

Slowly, the glare from the blast faded. She closed her eyes, hoping that when she opened them, her sister would be waiting for her. She would grab her, hold her and tell her how sorry she was. She had been an awful sister, but things would change now, she would make everything right. She opened her eyes…

Her hopes died.

Nightmare Moon stood before her, completely unscathed, a sneer on her face. She gave up and let the weight of the elements pull her to the ground. With a dejected snap, the necklace fell from her neck, disintegrating, and the gems collapsed to the ground. Slowly, they lost their luster, growing dimmer and dimmer until all that were left were six gray stones.

Where had it all gone wrong?

“You failed sister, and now I, and the night, shall reign supreme!” Nightmare Moon threw her head back, howling with laughter.

At that moment, she noticed, Nightmare Moon was open. She still had a sliver of magic left, if focused correctly, it could be an attack, a last ditch effort.

But no, she had already made her decision. She would let the world end before forcing herself to kill her own sister. She closed her eyes, defeated.

A blast of dark magic slammed into her, throwing her backwards into a stone wall. Pain lanced through her head, and she simply waited for it all to end. Oh what a ruler she turned out to be. Failing so utterly at stopping her sister who she drove to such anger and madness, she lay beaten and broken on the ground. No wonder the Elements had failed, she was not worthy to wield them on her own. At least it would be over soon.

Where had it all gone wrong?

The blow did not come.

“Celestia, you need to get up,” a whisper, so small she thought she’d imagined it. “Sister, you need to get up!” It was louder and more urgent now. Confused, she forced her eyes open.

Nightmare Moon towered before her, an imposing figure, but there was something else there too. Trying she focus, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Nightmare Moon seemed to be…flickering. One moment, so tall and powerful, the next…she became smaller, calmer, and so much more beautiful.

“Luna? How are you…did I…” She shook her head, afraid to hope this could be true. Nightmare Moon’s form settled, and Celestia finally saw her sister Luna, who stared back, a sad smile on her face. Celestia didn’t give her a chance to respond, she jumped forward, engulfing her sister in a great hug.

“Oh Luna! You’re back, I saved you, I didn’t fail! Everything’s going to be okay now, we can go back home, everything will be better now!” She exclaimed, holding her sister tight, afraid if she let go, she might lose her again.

“Sister…I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. Things aren’t going to get better,” Luna managed to say, pulling out of her sister’s grip.

“What are you talking about? You’re back, the Elements worked!” She argued.

“It’s not as simple as that. What Nightmare Moon said…what I said was true. I am a part of the elements, I was able to resist their effect. That part of me was just driven away, but I can feel it still, waiting, getting stronger.” Luna explained calmly, too calm, Celestia thought.

“I don’t understand,” was all she could say.

“Celestia…I was angry at you, so angry. Not once have you ever treated me as a ruler, an equal. I was always just your little sister. I resented you. I wanted, just once, to be acknowledged as the princess who ruled alongside you,” Luna paused, seeing the hurt on her sister’s face. “But I never wanted anything like this. Listen, something…strong, something terrible found me. It fed my anger, my hatred, building on them more and more, turning me into Nightmare Moon…”

“What thing? Where did it come from? Can we stop it?” Celestia asked, desperate.

“I don’t know sister, and we don’t have time to find out. I can feel it returning…you won’t be safe when I change back.”

“Then, what do we do?” A question where she knew the answer would be terrible.

“Seal me, put me away where I can’t hurt anypony. Seal me where I have been connected to since we took this land from Discord.” Luna looked through the hole in the ceiling at the night sky. “The moon, I won’t be able to resist it.” She looked back toward Celestia.

“Together, with the Elements, we can do it.” Luna tried to put a brave smile on her face.

“But that sort of seal…how would you return?” Another question with a terrible answer.

“I won’t, I will forever be the Mare in the Moon, watching over you, watching over our people.” Luna suddenly shuddered, shadows drawing towards her before she stamped a hoof on the ground, driving them away. “It must be done, I’m one of the rulers of this land after all, and sometimes a ruler must give everything for their people.” Not wasting any more time, Luna walked over and placed her horn against Celestia’s.

“No more hesitation, we have to do this,” Luna commanded.

“Right,” Celestia replied. At this moment, she finally saw Luna as what she should have all along, a true princess of Equestria.

Almost immediately, the stones around them rose, regaining their luster as the Elements. Their power grew and grew, and with them, Celestia felt herself growing stronger. Her and her sister began to rise into the air, the Elements circling around them, faster and faster as Celestia found a part of themselves represented in each Element.

Honesty when she finally admitted to herself all the wrongs she had committed towards her sister, and when her sister had admitted her own feelings toward her.

Kindness when she refused to harm her sister in the end, when her sister fought to free herself from her hatred to help her.
Loyalty toward their home, now giving all they had to try and save every pony from an endless night.

Generosity when Luna gave herself up completely to be forever locked away from those she cared for.

Laughter was harder to find, but as the Elements grew brighter the shadows were driven away, revealing more of the castle, and she remembered. It was their castle, where they had spent so much time laughing as they shirked their duties. Away from it all, they felt so free. Looking at her sister, she saw that she remembered too. They had Laughter.

Finally, there was Magic, the spark shared by the two of them. The spark shared as rulers, sisters, and friends.

Everything was there, everything was ready.

Faster and faster, the Elements were nothing but a blur around them. She felt the power wrap around her sister and begin pulling her away.

“It looks like…it’s time for me to go sister,” Luna admitted, pulling away. “Be sure to take care of Equestria…and please be safe…be strong, for the both of us.” She pleaded.

“I will, I promise. Also, I swear I will find a way to get you back, I will save you from Nightmare Moon!” Celestia declared. Luna just chuckled.

“You couldn’t let me have the last word, could you?” Luna gave one last smile. “Goodbye sister…I’ll always love you.” Luna’s body began to fade as she rose higher and higher towards the sky. Finally, she was gone.

Celestia felt herself lower to the ground, heard as the Elements fell around, fading back into stone. She watched in wonder as the sixth Element, Magic, simply vanished. With her sister gone, there was no longer the spark to contain it.

And now, with her sister gone, it was finally time. She shut her eyes, feeling the familiar draw of the sun, and with it, something new. She felt the moon, and suddenly, she knew how to move it as well. One last parting gift from her sister it seemed.

With a thought, the moon shifted, vanishing into the horizon and the sun rose, its light illuminating the land, finally freeing it from the dark.

The day had returned, her people were happy, knowing that their ruler had saved them. Everything, for them, was right again.

For her though, at this moment, standing in the ruined room of the castle she and her sister had shared, she had never felt so alone.

----------------------------------------------

“So, you haven’t found anything?” she asked her head wizard. She had returned to her castle in Canterlot and, after making sure all of her affairs were in order, threw every available resource she had into researching seals, the Elements of Harmony, and how their effects might be reversed. Unfortunately, after a month, she had learned nothing.
“I am sorry Princess,” the wizard replied, bowing low. “But I’m not sure there is anything to find. No one quite understands how the magic of the Elements works, and while there are many different sealing spells, the one you’re asking about, involving the moon, is unlike I’ve heard before…” He paused, obviously not wanting to upset Celestia.

“I…understand,” She admitted. “But please, keep looking, there has to be something in our library.”

“Of course,” The wizard turned to leave, but something else caught their attention. It was another unicorn, dressed in a blue wizard’s robe, carrying a scroll with his magic. He seemed so rush that he nearly tripped over himself on the way to the throne.

“Teacher, I found something!” He said, addressing the head wizard.

“What did you find, apprentice?” The wizard asked.

“Well you sent me to the Star Swirl the Bearded wing to research all the scrolls he had on seals, so I did,” he paused. “I didn’t find anything.”

“And then?” The head wizard growled.

“Oh! Then I figured since I was there I would look at the all the scrolls under ‘S.’ Took me forever, there were scrolls on searching spells, snake spells, staff spells-”

“Get to the point apprentice,” His teacher interrupted.

“Stars!” The young unicorn blurted out, handing the scroll over, “Star Swirl the Bearded wrote how they might affect a sealing spell.” Intrigued, the head wizard unrolled the scroll and began reading.

“Stars…how they spin and twist through the night sky, ever changing as the years go by. At first, I thought this phenomenon merely a quirk of nature, but only recently have I realized it could be so much more. Their positions could be used to strengthen your own magic, or weaken another’s. Unfortunately, such a position would be so rare, you might never get a chance to use it. However, as a master of the arts, I have researched this and have listed my findings,” the head wizard looked up at Celestia. “What follows is a list of stars and the positions needed for certain magic.”

“And…does it talk about seals?” Celestia asked, daring to hope.

“Yes, it does say how a certain arrangement will weaken seals…but such a set up won’t occur for…” he paused again, “a thousand years…”

“Oh…” was all she could say, “Thank you, both of you for your help…you are dismissed. But please, continue your research, just in case.”

“I…yes my Princess, come along apprentice,” with another bow the head wizard left the trone room, his apprentice following quickly behind him.

Alone now, she headed out to the balcony behind the throne. It was night now, and she had a beautiful view of the moon. Looking out towards it, she found herself wondering who exactly was watching her. Her sister, or Nightmare Moon? In the end, she decided it didn’t matter. Her sister would hear her, no matter what.

“Good evening little sister, I finally have some good news. I found a way to free you, like I promised…but it's going to take a while...a thousand years actually. Well…it’s better than being sealed forever right?” she took a deep breath, steadying herself. “It’s been so hard without you here, so much harder than I ever thought it would be. Every time I bring the moon up, I’m reminded of how I failed you, of all the things I did wrong. But…I won’t let it get to me, because I know how mad you’d be if I did.”

“I’ll stay strong Luna, and when you’re freed, the elements of harmony will have found new bearers. They’ll save you, and everything will be better, you’ll see,” she promised. “Well…that’s all. Goodnight Luna, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

And she did. Every night for a thousand years she talked to her younger sister, and she never forgot her promise. It was always there, in the back of her mind.

She remembered it as the thousand years grew closer and closer to ending, as the stars slowly shifted into their proper alignment.

She remembered it even as she took a young purple unicorn, so strong with her magic, on as a student.

She remembered as she realized how ideal her protégé would be as an element bearer.

She remembered as she sent a letter telling her student to go make some friends, a letter that seemed so innocent, but carried so many of her hopes with it.

Please, let this one thing go right.
