Three years since the end of what Equestrians call 'The Final Equestrian War', chunks of a Ulysses asteroid land on the Changeling Kingdom, leaving their economy in shambles. A desperate solution is devised by Queen Chrysalis to regain resources, and the Changelings invade and completely overrun the Crystal Empire. The Alicorn Sisters then declare war on Chrysalis...

...months later, Lieutenant Colonel Akula leads two United Equestrian bomber squadrons on an attack on a Changeling port. However, Changeling aircraft intercept the group and all bomber, except for Akula, are shot down. Akula is forced to jettison his bomb load to get back home alive, but he failed his mission. Upon reaching home base, he is kicked out of UPEO and sent to the Solar Empire's 444th Tactical Fighter Squadron, callisign 'Spare'. Now commanding a squadron with some of Equestria's greatest villans and reformed villains, he discovers something that turned the war on its end... (anypony else getting a sense of deja-vu right now?)

Here we go again... Akula is back in all his glory, now in a war against his own species! Yup.

This story is inspired by and contains characters, ideas, events and locations from Lonewolf78's Ace Combat: The Changeling War, which I didn't co-author. However, his story is, basically, a ponified version of Ace Combat 6, whereas mine contains references to the following:
