Chapter 9: Stand-Off

As Twilight focused all of her magic ability, a thought entered her mind.
In a world where I feel so small, I can't stop thinking big.
The phrase spread across her mind like a raging wild fire.
Think big... she thought.
Slowly, the bright white light began to manifest itself again. Growing larger and larger by the second as Twilight's muscles screamed at her to stop working. She payed no mind and continued her train of thought.
Home, Spike, my library, think big...
The first shot punched it's way through the crowd with incredible force, planting itself firmly in the wall behind three infected after it cleanly made itself right through their flesh.

Earl worked his way partly down the stairs as another infected sprinted up. Another shot quickly sent it reeling backwards, most parts of it's head still not intact.

The human was unmoved and simply continued walking down his stairs. Those were his stairs, this was his house, that was his friend, this was his gun, and it was time to do some damage.
As he reached the bottom of the stairs, he looked around the living room, where only three infected were wondering about. He then noticed the sliding glass door had been completely shattered, despite the boards he had previously nailed to the frame to keep it shut. But the pounding still continued at the door, waiting to break any second. Earl took the moment to reload the two shells he had used earlier. If Left 4 Dead, Halo, and Call of Duty had taught this teenager anything, it was that an empty clip is not your friend. After placing the fresh carriers of death into his barrel, he wasted no time in dispatching the stragglers wandering in his living room. Walking up to the first one, he tossed his shotgun to his right hand, and with his left, unsheathed his bat. With all of the force he could possibly muster, he slammed the tattered wood down on the flesh-freak's head, causing it to indent profusely while spreading blood across the floor. Needless to say, it fell dead as Earl watched, unmoved again. It's two zombie brethren quickly noticed and approached him, to his advantage, they weren't runners. With a single arm, he raised the shot gun and sent one of them flying backwards as blood painted the wall behind them.

The shots startled Twilight immensely, but she did not break focus. As the lyrics and thoughts continued to race in her mind, the size of the light grew. It had began to manifest itself into a wide circle, wide enough for her to jump through. After it had reached the maximum size, a small ball of energy erupted from Twilight's horn and traveled slowly to the light. A massive wave of energy immediately knocked Twilight to the ground and the bright colors from her home were shining through the now open portal.
"I, did it?" She asked, shocked at her own achievement.
She returned to her hooves and literally jumped for joy.
"I DID IT! YES!" She shouted happily.
Earl would've heard her shouts of pure joy, if he didn't hear the front door colliding with the floor first. Wasting no time, he ran over to the archway and saw a massive amount of infected making their way into his home. After reloading two shots into his gun, Earl swiftly raised his weapon to the crowd and began sending a barrage of shots into the wall of dead meat. He was able to kill a large amount of them, but twelve miles of zombies isn't going to be gone after 8 shotgun shells. The human nearly went white as the gun clicked.
"EMPTY?!" He shouted angrily.
Seeing the advancing crowd, the human briskly made his way upstairs, reloading his shotgun the whole way and dropping most of his shells on the ground.
"You've got to be kidding me!" He shouted as he watched the bag of ammunition tumble down the stairs.
Knowing it was a lost cause, the human continued running upstairs, a sprinting infected close behind. As he reached the top, he turned and was a few feet away from the sprinter.
I've always wanted to do this... Earl thought to himself.
He reached his right hand over the barrel of his weapon and flipped it over, so that the stock was sticking up i the air. Without hesitation, he slammed the stock of the weapon down on the head of the sprinter, causing it to fall to the floor and twitch. Flipping it back over, he landed a shot it it's skull to be sure of death.

As the rest of the crowd continued up the stairs, Earl continued throwing shells their direction, killing a large amount of them. As the kill count rose, the gun began to click again.
"Oh, you are a reaaaaaal bitch." He said angrily.
Making his way back to the room Twilight was in, he was able to reload 4 shots into the weapon,
but then he tripped.
Twilight quickly turned her attention to the hallway as Earl crawled into the room, wincing in pain.
"What happened?!" She asked worriedly.
Earl propped his back against his bed and readied his gun.

"I.... twisted my.....ankle..." He said, breathing heavily.
Earl looked towards portal and then back at Twilight.
"What are you still doing here?!" He shouted.
The infected suddenly appeared around the corner to the long hallway.
Twilight glanced towards the attackers and then back to the human.
"I'm not leaving you here." She said.
Earl was extremely taken back by this. He glanced to the portal again.
"Are you CRAZY?!" He said, raising his shotgun to the advancing infected.
A few shots rang out before Twilight could answer.
Click.
"Well that's just lovely!" Earl screamed as he threw the shotgun down the hallway.
"I'm not crazy, OK?" Twilight said.
She glanced towards the crowd again.
"Just trust me..." She said sternly as she turned back to the human.
Trust...
She had trusted him so many times.
And now it was time to return the favor.
Earl nodded after a few moments as the infected inched closer to his room. He quickly stood up, wincing slightly at the pain in his ankle. Before approaching the portal he examined his room. Was he really about to leave this world? Enter a completely new dimension? What if he didn't make it through the portal?
As the thoughts entered his mind, he knew one thing was for sure;
It was a hell of a lot better than getting eaten alive.
"Are you ready?" Twilight asked.
Earl nodded nervously.
The two friends approached the portal slowly as nerves crept up on the human.
Twilight quickly jumped through and a small flash of light seemed to whisk her away. Earl looked around once more.
Goodbye...
cruel world...
I'm leaving you today. He thought.
With that, he jumped into the portal as well, and with a quick flash of light, the last uninfected human on the planet was gone.
But the portal remained open.
