Chapter 20: Ishimura: The Marker

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Chrysalis and Isaac remained quiet as they rode the Tram to the Flight Deck, where they would finally find the Marker that was responsible for all of this madness and take it back down to Aegis VII, something that neither of them had been expecting when they decided to repair the shuttle. Chrysalis knew that it made sense for them to take the damned Marker back to the planet below them, as it should be able to seal that Hive Mind that Kyne showed them, though at the same time she sensed that someone was about to betray them. Kyne was definitely insane, as he had been talking to his dead wife when she and Isaac found him and made several mentions about her while talking to them, while at the same time Kendra had proved that she wasn't trustworthy when she purposely got Hammond killed earlier. Sooner or later she was going to get at Kendra for killing Hammond, she just needed to be patient and get through the madness that was coming up, since she knew that the Marker had to be guarded by a good number of Necromorphs.

The duo kept their thoughts to themselves, as they both knew that they had to be prepared for the guardians of the Marker, before the Tram came to a stop after it's short ride to the Flight Deck, where the duo sighed as they reengaged their helmets, picked up their weapons, and walked out onto the station area that they had passed through earlier.

"Mr. Clarke, Miss Chrysalis, I'm approaching the shuttle hangar." Kyne told them, to which the duo watched the video link appear in front of them, where they noticed that the doctor seemed happy that they were willing to help him fix the mistakes that the crew of the Ishimura did, "You must... You must find your way to the Cargo Bay! The Marker... it's being stored in there. There's a cargo loading lift there you can use to deliver the Marker up to the hangar. Please... you must help me with this! It's the only way..."

"Don't worry Kyne, we're here to help you out." Chrysalis said, fully meaning that she and Isaac were willing to help him right the wrongs and end this nightmare, as they had no idea what Kendra was doing at the moment.

Kyne nodded and the connection was terminated, to which the duo quickly approached the store and sold off the ammunition and items they didn't need, before using some of their credits to purchase some Power Nodes that they used on the Bench behind them to improve their weapons. With that done, as it was rather easy for them at this point in time, they approached the door on the left of the store, which would take them to the Tram Station Hall, though when the door opened they found an exploder on the other side. Chrysalis, acting fast, raised her arm and used a small burst of energy to knock the exploder backwards, allowing Isaac to aim at the goo sack that it was carrying and caused the Necromorph to explode. From there they walked through the hallway that was in front of them, pausing for a moment as they passed by the bathrooms they had passed by earlier in their venture, before they turned to the right after the bathrooms and approached the door that would allow them to enter the Cargo Bay.

Fortunately it appeared that they wouldn't have to ride a cargo lift or an elevator to reach the Cargo Bay, though when they entered the area that the Marker was in they discovered that there were a lot of cargo boxes in front of them, but it appeared that the shaking of the ship had jumbled them up in some manner. They walked onto the cargo lift that was in front of them and rode it down to the level beneath them, though as they did so Chrysalis spotted a pregnant Necromorph that immediately carved itself open, releasing a pair of lurkers into the area as it died. As Isaac opened fire on the lurkers, showing that he had seen them as well, Chrysalis stood beside him and fired at the exploder that was on the walkway they would likely have to walk on. As the two of them made their way towards the walkway, however, the Necromorphs started emerging from their hiding places and marched towards where the duo was standing, though this time Chrysalis turned around until her back was facing Isaac's. She was going to make sure that their foes didn't surprise them from behind while Isaac focused on the Necromorphs that were in front of them, though the duo discovered slashers, exploders, twitchers, lurkers, leapers, and pretty much every variety guarding this area.

The initial group of enemies fell a few moments later, where they noticed a good amount of enemies were dead around them, to which the duo quickly moved around the exterior of the Cargo Bay and collected the ammunition that was stored around the area... before they made their way towards the control panel they had been fighting near and activated the terminal. The duo watched as a crane, one designed to grab things, descended from the ceiling of the room and descended into the cargo that rested in front of them, where they waited for a few seconds before the crane started reversing it's direction as it found the Marker. That was shortly followed by the crane bringing up the container that the Marker was contained in, where Chrysalis' eyes widened as she and Isaac looked upon the red colored double-helix shaped relic that had caused all the madness that had occurred on Aegis VII and the Ishimura. It was an imposing artifact, as even Chrysalis could feel it's power, but at the same time she knew what she and Isaac had to do with it, to which they watched as it landed on the movable platform in front of them.

Delivering cargo shipment 782. a computerized voice said, while at the same time the crane that had pulled the Marker up let go of the container and retreated back to where it had originally come from, Kinesis Module required for further cargo transport.

Luckily they had the Kinesis Module, to which Isaac held his hand towards the Marker and started moving the container along the path that was in front of them, though while he did that Chrysalis was on point and kept her eyes open for any and all Necromorphs that wanted them dead. She was right to have done so, since a new group of slashers, exploders, and a pregnant Necromorph started to move towards their location, though Chrysalis smiled as she opened fire and started dismembering the foes that were close to her and Isaac, while also removing the pregnant foe with a the detonation from the exploder's goo sacks. Isaac, after seeing how she worked thanks to their trek through the Ishimura, clearly trusted her like he trusted all of his friends, something that she was glad to have, and she made sure that none of the Necromorphs came anywhere near her friend... especially after what happened to Hammond earlier, when they were getting the singularity core from the Valor.

As they moved onto the walkway a tentacle emerged from the depths, confirming that there was likely a third monstrous creature aboard the Ishimura, though before it could do anything Chrysalis latched onto it with her magic and locked it in place, before tearing it's weakness apart and blew it to pieces... though a few seconds later a second one emerged from the cargo boxes and tried the same thing, only to end in the same result as Chrysalis smiled.

Delivering cargo shipment 782 to the Hanger Bay. the computerized voice said, to which Chrysalis looked over at Isaac and found that he had successful delivered the Marker to the other side of the area it had been stored in, where another crane latched onto the container and hauled it into the air.

"The cargo lift has arrived!" Kyne told them, though while he sounded happy that they were making progress, as both Isaac and Chrysalis were happy to be near the end of this nightmare, he also sounded anxious, which was understandable since they were going to have to take it down to Aegis VII, "The Marker is in the hangar bay. Now you can load it into the shuttle. Hurry!"

Isaac and Chrysalis quickly gathered all the ammunition that had dropped from the Necromorphs that Chrysalis had killed, which was quite a lot now that she thought about it, before they returned to the cargo lift and headed up to the level above them... where they returned to the hallway and headed back towards the store, as the elevator they needed to take was right next to it.

"I restored power to the elevator." Kendra informed them, which meant that they didn't have to go through some secondary mission to restore it themselves, though that made things much easier for them, despite the fact that Chrysalis still didn't trust her, "Take it up to the Hangar Bay and get that Marker on the shuttle. I'm heading up to the flight deck now. Oh god... I'm just going to run for it... wish me luck."

As the connection was terminated, and the duo climbed onto the elevator, Chrysalis wished that a Necromorph would jump Kendra before she made it to the shuttle, just so Hammond could be avenged in some manner, but she kept that to herself as she and Isaac rode the elevator to their destination. Once the elevator came to a stop the duo walked through the open door and continued towards the Flight Lounge, where the lights came back on as they reentered the room where they first experienced what a Necromorph could do. Chrysalis was a little sad as they entered the area, as Chen and Johnston didn't deserve to go out in such a fashion, before she shook her head and followed Isaac to the door that he had hacked through to enter this area when they first arrived on the Ishimura. Of course the quarantine was activated before they could even reach the door, so both she and Isaac turned around and opened fire on the slashers that burst through the air vents, as they were expecting an attack the moment the area was sealed.

Fortunately it was only the seven slashers that came at them, six of the weaker ones and one empowered one to be exact, but the duo was able to stand their ground and defeat the slashers in no time, releasing the area from the quarantine and allowing them to walk through the door at last. From there they returned to the area where the Kellion had crashed into, which there was still some fragments of off to their left, before the main door opened and they could see a shuttle coming in to land.

"Excellent! I'm going to dock the shuttle. Got to be careful now...careful..." Kyne told them, to which the duo simply watched the shuttle, because if it was damaged in any sort of way then they might as well say goodbye to each other since the only working shuttle on the ship would have been totaled, though they smiled as the shuttle entered the area without a problem and the door started to close, "I'm bringing the shuttle down now. The automated loading controls aren't responding. The two of you will have to shut down gravity in the hangar bay and then manually bring the Marker directly beneath the shuttle."

Isaac nodded and beckoned for Chrysalis to follow, to which the two of them backtracked towards the door they had just walked through, though to the left of it rested a second door that Chrysalis remembered seeing back when she and the others first arrived, and it was unlocked now. When they walked through that door Isaac brought them to another door, though on the other side of that one they had to walk up a ramp and passed through a third door that allowed them to approach the gravity controls. The moment the two of them were ready, and the shuttle was completely still where Kyne had parked it, Isaac pressed the command prompt and the gravity in the Hanger Bay ceased to exist, to which he and Chrysalis leapt through the air and traveled over to where the Marker was waiting for them. As they traveled through the air, however, several lurkers started pouring into the air, so the moment Isaac landed he turned towards their foes and started firing at them, which Chrysalis did as well with the pack that was trying to flank them.

The only good thing about lurkers was that they died in a few hits and usually dropped the ammunition they needed to keep their weapons going, though soon enough both Isaac and Chrysalis were done with their individual targets and walked over to where the Marker, which was laying on it's side since the container was like that, was resting and started to move it along the path that was in front of them. Chrysalis immediately discovered that they needed to change the tracks so they could get the Marker to the shuttle, to which she activated the terminal they were coming to and watched as the opening faced the direction Isaac was coming from. Isaac reached where Chrysalis was standing and moved the Marker off to the side, where another shuttle would have been, allowing Chrysalis to restore the track to how it had been moments ago before they moved the Marker even closer to Kyne's position. Chrysalis changed the tracks in front of them and let Isaac do the rest, where she watched as he moved the Marker into position underneath the middle of the shuttle, though once it was in place he backed away and stared at his handiwork.

"Okay, it's in position." Kyne said, causing the duo to smile, as it appeared that this would all be over soon, though at the same time Chrysalis couldn't shake the feeling that she had from earlier, "Eh, still having trouble with these damn loading controls. Isaac, Chrysalis, could you please restore gravity to the room? I should be able to load the Marker then."

Isaac and Chrysalis flew through the air and landed above the walkway they needed to land on, where they readjusted themselves before they jumped back down to the walkway, to which Isaac tapped the command option and gravity was restored once more... where he and Chrysalis watched as the Marker was brought aboard the shuttle at last.

"It's on board!" Kyne said, his voice much happier than it had been since they first started talking with the man, though Chrysalis focused on his video log as she waited for whatever her feeling was to happen, "Please, come and join me. Together we can stop this Hive Mind! We can end this nightmare! At last!"

Isaac and Chrysalis nodded before the connection was terminated, to which they headed though the door that was behind them, walked down the ramp, and passed through the other door before turning to the right, where they found a very happy Kyne standing on the walkway in front of them... though to Chrysalis' dread she couldn't see Kendra anywhere, though she kept her weapon at the ready in case something happened.

"Over here! Hurry, there's no time to waste, we must do it..." Kyne said, waving at them for a moment, but as that happened Chrysalis and Isaac noticed that he became distracted all of a sudden as he turned towards the shuttle, "Wait... Ameila... where are you going... wait..."

That was swiftly followed by a shot ringing out and a large hole was opened in Kyne's chest, to which he looked down at the wound in shock for a few seconds before collapsing on the ground, though since it wasn't a Necromorph that had gotten him Chrysalis had the feeling that she knew exactly who was to blame... especially since the walkway's ramp had receded and shuttle's door had closed, to which the duo watched as it started to move out of the Hanger Bay.

"Sorry, Isaac, Chrysalis, but I couldn't let him go though with it." a voice said, to which the duo watched as Kendra appeared thanks to a video link, though at the same time Chrysalis stared at the lady with a look of pure hatred in her eyes, one that might even put the great Somrba to shame, "I suppose I should thank him for finding the Marker. We even managed without help from the USM Valor... Thank you for helping me find it, by the way. My department's been looking for this place for a long time. See, what Kyne didn't know was, it was the government's mess to begin with. This whole planet is one big experiment. The Marker? This 'divine relic'? Made by man. They reverse-engineered it a couple of hundred years ago from the REAL Marker, a true alien artifact recovered on Earth. They dug it up, studied it, and made it their own. Then they brought it to Aegis VII, and activated it. And you've seen the result. The stuff of nightmares. They sealed the system, and no one would have been the wiser."

Kendra paused for a moment to chuckle about something, though whether it was so she could gloat about her great victory or spill even more beans to them Chrysalis didn't care, because she wanted Kendra dead for everything that she had done since they landed on this forsaken ship.

"But then CEC blunders in and starts tearing the planet apart." Kendra said, revealing that her chuckles were because of what the company that Isaac, Hammond, and the others worked for had done to Aegis VII, "The experiment was still alive. Kyne was right about the Hive Mind. The Marker would contain it...but that doesn't matter now, does it? I have the Marker, and this entire system can go to hell. For what it's worth, you did a great job, Isaac. And Chrysalis, you were right about me the moment Hammond died... it's a shame that you landed on the Kellion and not in my department's office a few weeks ago, because we could have used someone with your resourcefulness. Maybe I'll see one of you around in the future... or maybe not."

"Kendra, I swear, as Celestia as my witness, that if I get off this ship I am going to hunt you down and make you pay for everything that you've done to us," Chrysalis growled, causing the lady to pause before the connection was terminated, though she smiled when she saw the slightly frightened look on Kendra's face, "You are an absolute bitch, one of the worst that I have ever come across, and I am going to enjoy making you suffer when I get my hands on you."

"...I believe you..." Kendra said, though that was followed by her cutting off the video log and her communication with the duo, causing Chrysalis to growl in annoyance as the Hanger Bay door closed in front of them.

"Isaac! It's Nicole!" a new voice said, to which another video link appeared before them, this time belonging to Nicole, though some of Chrysalis' anger melted when she saw Wildfire standing behind Nicole, "I need you to help me, help us! Now! We're... We're in the Flight Control Room! Please, Isaac hurry! Please... I love you..."

Isaac and Chrysalis made their way back towards the control panel that they used to mess with the gravity, where they found a second door that would take them to the area that Nicole and Wildfire were in, to which they walked up another ramp and came to a door. Behind the door rested a guardian and it's pods, to which the duo opened fire on their foes before they could be hurt in the process, though that didn't stop them from keeping their guards. Once the guardian was dead they approached the door that it had been guarding and entered the Control Room, where they found both Nicole and Wildfire minding their own business... though when they walked into the room the duo turned towards them with a smile on each of their faces. As Isaac and Chrysalis approached the duo, and looked at the control panels in front of them, Chrysalis stopped beside her dear Wildfire and disengaged her helmet as she smiled down at the pegasus, who smiled back up at her for a moment.

Despite the pain and anger that this adventure had caused her, mostly because of Kendra, Chrysalis was at least happy to have a few more moments with Wildfire, especially since it appeared that Nicole needed their assistance with something, which was why Isaac was approaching her at the moment.

"Isaac! Is that really you?" Nicole inquired, though she waited for a few seconds for Isaac to nod before she started talking about, but the movement and way she talked had Chrysalis wonder if she was actually dead as well, as she knew that this had to be Isaac from when they met earlier, "I never thought we would be together again. God, I'm... I'm so sorry for what I did... I never wanted to hurt you... but you need to get it back now Isaac."

"That's the plan," Isaac replied, though at the same time he could already imagine what Chrysalis was going to do to Kendra when they got their hands on her, and a part of him really didn't want to know what Kendra's fate was going to be, not after what happened to that brute earlier, "Tell me what do do and we'll get the Marker back from Kendra."

"You can pilot the shuttle remotely from here." Nicole said, beckoning to the terminal that she was standing near, though since she hadn't touched it at all that gave some evidence to what Chrysalis was thinking about, "Make us whole, Isaac... Make us whole."

Isaac approached the terminal, the Emergency Shuttle Recall terminal, and stared at the command prompt that had been put on the screen, to which he silently raised his hand and confirmed the order, to which he noticed that the Ishimura started sending out the command prompt to the shuttle... and he could already imagine the look on Kendra's face when she realized what was happening.

"Isaac, what the hell are you and Chrysalis doing?" Kendra shouted over the audio link, informing the duo that they weren't even worth looking at anymore, though at the same time the duo waited to see what her next move was, "The two of you are making a big mistake. This is not over!"

That was followed by the computerized voice declaring that an escape pod had been launched from the shuttle, revealing that Kendra was fleeing for now, though at the same time Isaac smiled as the Hanger Bay door opened once more and the shuttle returned to where it had been before Kendra tried to fly off with it and the Marker.

"It doesn't matter," Wildfire said, though she smiled as Chrysalis rubbed the area behind her ears, despite the fact that Chrysalis knew the truth behind why she was able to see her again, "she can't escape her fate."

"None of us can..." Nicole stated, but her choice of words caused Chrysalis to know that there was something off about her, since she seemed to be talking about something different than what Isaac was thinking about, before they turned towards the shuttle, "Here it comes. I'll reprogram the shuttle so we can fly down to the colony. We're so close Isaac... now go! You and Chrysalis should get on the shuttle... I'll meet you there."

Chrysalis entered the command prompt and reengaged her helmet for the moment, where she and Isaac started walking back along the path that would take them back to the shuttle, though at the same time Wildfire walked behind them as if she was actually alive and not an echo of Chrysalis' memories. Chrysalis didn't mind as much as she should have, despite the fact that this meant that she was definitely going insane, but she enjoyed the extra time with Wildfire, since she figured they had been robbed back when she was alive. She knew that this was merely an echo, but the way it walked, talked, and acted, along with the seemingly real touch she felt every time they made contact, made her think that the echo was the real Wildfire... and she was perfectly okay with that decision.

Eventually they made it back to the walkway that would allow them to access the shuttle, though as they stepped out onto the walkway two more leapers appeared in front of them, clearly trying to stop them from leaving the Ishimura with the Marker. What surprised Isaac was that Wildfire, despite being an echo of the real deal, opened her wings and took flight, where she used that flaming lance of hers to dismember the Necromorphs that were in front of them, and they were definitely the real deal when he checked the limb that came to a rest in front of him. Isaac knew that if he and Chrysalis were going insane, which it appeared might be happening to his companion, that they would be hallucinating and none of this was real, but the Necromorphs were real and were being cut apart as if Wildfire was real. For a moment he considered that maybe Chrysalis' love for Wildfire had created some sort of echo that switched between reality and illusion, but before he could say anything Chrysalis and Wildfire climbed up the ramp and entered the shuttle, to which he sighed and followed after them.

Not a few moments later he took one of the seats in the cockpit, where Nicole followed after them and took the other one as Chrysalis and Wildfire sat in the seating area beside the door they used to get aboard the shuttle... to which Isaac input the commands and the shuttle started to leave the Ishimura. It was time for him and Chrysalis to finish their mission and stop the nightmare, and that meant traveling down to Aegis VII and putting the Marker back where it belonged.
