Volar's Life
Chapter 1: Prologue: Loss
After Mommy's visit with Princess Celestia, she said she'd take us out for a picnic! I can't wait! Daddy's taking me out for ice cream today, and maybe we could even visit Sweet Apple Acres!
The Day After
I woke up groggily and yawned, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes with my hooves and sliding off the bed onto the brown wooden floor. With a light trot, I go out to the living room, seeing Mommy pack up a basket with sandwiches. She turned towards me and smiled with soft eyes, waving a hoof.
"Good morning sleepy head, how did you sleep?" she asked
"I slept good mommy..aren't we going for the picnic today?" I looked up at her with a soft smile and sat on my flank.
"Yup! Daddy will be out in just a minute, and then we'll go. How about you eat some breakfast first, okay?"
"Oh fine..." I sighed dramatically and trotted over to the kitchen. Standing on my hind hooves, I pulled out a hay and granola bar, closing the cupboard and nibbling on it.
Daddy trotted out of the bathroom a few minutes later, smiling happily.
"How's my beautiful wife and amazing son?" He asked
"I'm great dear. I finished packing up, and we're all ready to go." Mommy smiled sweetly as she spoke. She turned her head towards me.
"Come on sweetie, you don't wanna be late"
Mommy grinned at me and I hopped onto her back, daddy wrapping a wing around us. I was so excited, squirming happily as our door creaked shut. Mommy and daddy walked towards the forest, a picnic basket in daddy's mouth. After a few minutes of trotting, my vision becomes clouded with trees and leaves, shadows passing over us as we went deeper into the forest.
"M-Mommy, are we in the E-Everfree forest..?" My voice quivered
"Yes sweetheart, but don't worry. Daddy and mommy will keep you safe. And besides, we've been out here before! We even have our own little fort from when we were foals. If you're good, we can visit it!" She had a reassuring tone in her voice...it made me feel..safe
"O-Okay mommy..I wub chu!"
She giggled and sighed happily, still trotting along through the forest. Leaves crunched beneath mommy and daddy's hooves as we went deeper into the forest. The shadows grow thicker as a light fog rolled in. Daddy set down the picnic basket next to a large tree, and turned to mommy.
"I don't think we should go any further honey.. He looked to me and smiled softly, ruffling my mane. Don't worry Vol, we'll visit our old fort another time. But we're still gonna have our picnic" said Daddy
"Yay!"
Mommy and daddy smiled as they set me down, opening the picnic basket and setting out a blanket and sandwiches for us. Mommy yawned softly and looked over at daddy.
"You brought the tents, right babe?" Mommy asked
"Of course sweetheart, don't worry. You eat. Hey Vol? He looked down at me with a smile. Wanna help pitch the tent?" Daddy said
"YES DADDY!!!"
My smile widened as I jumped up, practically stumbling over my own hooves as I dragged the tent over to a small clearing, tiny shafts of light shining down onto the forest floor. A small growl was heard from around me, and daddy chuckled.
"You getting hungry Vol?" Daddy asked curiously
"U-Um...daddy..t-that wasn't me.." My voice was shaky
His eyes widened slowly as he wrapped a hoof around me and pulled me back to mommy. More growls were heard as twigs snapped and leaves crunched, all around us. Small, blue eyes peered at us from the bushes, the fog rolling in like thick soup.
"D-Don't worry Vol...daddy's gonna keep you and mommy safe.." Daddy was clearly scared..
"D-Don't let the monsters eat me!"
Tears started dripping down my cheek as the bushes revealed wolves...made of wood..daddy talked about them..he called them Timberwolves. He said their jaws were like daggers, and they'd stop at nothing to get an easy meal..
"BABE, WATCH OUT!" Mom screamed with wide eyes
One of the timberwolves lunged out, snapping at daddy's hoof. Its jaw clamped on and held tight.
SNAP
Daddy kicked the timberwolf in the face with his hind hoof, the wood of his face cracking open. It whimpers and runs away, a small blue light shining through the cracks of its skull. He scrambled up and picked me up onto his back, holding mommy's hoof as he started galloping. Snarls and growls surrounded us, the snapping of twigs and leaves growing close.
"Babe, we have to get back to the ho-" Daddy was cut off from talking as a timberwolf lunged at him, his jaw clamping onto his neck.
He screamed in pain and terror as he let go of Mommy's hoof, blood pooling on the leaves below him. He fell to the ground and mommy scooped me up, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I-Is Daddy okay?!" I asked, filled with worry
"Y-Yes sweetie, we just have to run.." Mommy said with a quivering voice
Snaps of bone and marrow echoed behind us as she ran. Mommy stopped to catch her breath and pulled me onto her back. She looked around with a look of pure terror.
"I...we need to get out...we never should have come here.." She panted softly, her breathing heavy
Those were the last words I heard from mommy as she was knocked to the side, screaming in horror as a timberwolf latched onto her. She looked up at me as the timberwolf chewed on her chest, blood spilling out onto the ground...
"R-Run..hide...just...live....I..I love you sweetie..mommy and daddy love you very very much.."
She forced a smile onto her face as sadness filled her eyes as they went dull, her skin growing from a soft pink to an almost white color as the blood drained from her.
More timberwolves joined in the feast, her breathing going from effort filled pants of pain, to nothing. Shaking in fear, I ran. My hooves snapped twigs and leaves as I ran away, as fast as my little hooves could carry me. Water sloshed around me as my hoof slipped, falling into the mud of the streams and the swamp. I shivered and laid in the mud, my mane sticking in clumps from the mud. The shock suddenly hit me, as tears started streaming down my cheeks.
"M-Mommy...and D-Daddy..t-they're gone..I-I'm lost..I'm going to d-die out here..alone.."
A low growling creeps up behind me and invades my thoughts, my fear spiking. I turn around just in time to fall onto my back as a timberwolf jumps at me.
BOOM
The rain soaked my coat of brown, ruffled fur. The trees offered no protection from the cold of the wind and rain.
"J-Just a dream..."
My eyes fill with water of my own, adding to the dampness of my coat and mane as I cry heavy tears, holding my head in my hooves.
"I miss you mommy..daddy..I miss you..but....I won't let you down...I..I'll live..for you mommy.."
Tears flow down my cheek as the grief of the memories and the pain of the nightmare washes over me. The death..mommy..daddy...they were gone..forever..
I curl up under the tree as best I could, covered in mud and water. As the cold seeps into my from the ground, my eyes close, exhaustion filling my body.
"G-Goodnight mommy...goodnight daddy....I love you.."
My consciousness fades slowly as I fall into the realm of sleep.
