This is a riff on Ninjadeadbeard's All These Midnight Days (74,102 words at time of publishing, [Comedy][Drama][Slice of Life]) The first line of this offshoot comes directly from the source.

CAUTION: This comment fic deals with spoilery concepts. It won't ruin the story, but reading that first is still more strongly recommended than usual.

ALL THESE MIDNIGHT SPOILERS: Due to Shenanigans™, Midnight Sparkle is a separate physical entity from human Twilight, the two of them having undergone an imperfect magical fission, the consequences of which are still being explored. Part of said Shenanigans™ involved pumping so much magic into Sunset Shimmer as to possibly force her ascension. When Sunset's next trip to Equestria confirms that she's grown wings, she doesn't take it well.

"No! No! I am not going to be a Princess! I’ve already decided, that is not a thing that is happening!" Sunset stomped a hoof for emphasis. "You don't do the stuff I did and get rewarded for it."

Luna cleared her throat.

"Coup d'etats don't count when you're already on the throne!" Sunset insisted.

"Coups d'etat," muttered Twilight. Nopony appeared to notice or care.

Luna tilted her head. "They do not? According to whom?"

"Me," Sunset proclaimed, "as of now!"

"Goodness." Luna grinned. "And by what right do you claim such authority in the ways of royalty, Sunset?"

Sunset went quiet for a few moments. Nopony else in the library could completely hold back a smile. In Pinkie's case, she clearly wasn't even trying. Celestia was even worse. Finally, the newest alicorn just let her ears and wings droop and muttered, "Shut up."
