Chapter 7: Ch. 6 - Closing the Distance

Previous Chapter

Moondancer drove down the old dirt road leading to her house. Her arm hung out of her window as she drove, the cool afternoon air rushing through her hair. The familiar drive calmed her nerves as she went, the bumps in the road comforting as her mind wandered. Arriving at her destination, she headed into her home. Silence greeted her as she shut the door behind herself, the large empty house as lonely as ever.

"Oh..." She spotted Sour's worn clothes sitting in a small pile next to the front door.

Moondancer grabbed her tank top before taking a seat on her couch. She held it to her face and inhaled her friend's lingering scent, then leaned back and closed her eyes. She squeezed the garment and pressed it against her chest as her heart pounded. With a huff, she tossed the shirt back onto the floor, then leaned forward and dug through her backpack. From within she lifted her notebook and opened up where she had left off in the library.

"Sour," she muttered as she ran her finger over her scribbled-out name. "I let you go once before, I can do it again."

She grabbed her pen and began to write.

Human emotion is a strange thing. Far too difficult for me to comprehend. Why would I be willing to risk a newly rekindled friendship so quickly? Why must I complicate things when they seem to be going smoothly for once? Why did these feelings come rushing back after such a short amount of time? All questions no answers...

Maybe this will all be okay, provided I can continue living as I had been for the past couple of years. Between my studies and work, Sour can be my friend again. That's something I should be grateful for. Even if it isn't entirely ideal, it's something I want, and focusing on the negative aspects of this situation will only be detrimental to my happiness. I need to make myself understand that, and truly believe it.

Lemon Zest sighed deeply as she sat on her amp and tuned her guitar, Cloud Chaser nagging behind her. She sat her instrument between her legs and lifted her phone to see that Vinyl had finally returned her text message. She suddenly had an overwhelming urge to grin, then put her phone away.

"Alright! One more time from the top!"

Moondancer chewed on the back of her pen as she thought for a moment, then pressed it back to paper.

Two years was far too long to be separated from my best friend, but if anything I know now how important she was is and has always been to me. Sour Sweet deserves to be happy, and whether or not I get to be a part of the intense love she has to give, I can be happy that she has someone to share it with. If worse comes to worse, I'll be here for her. In the meantime, I'm just glad to have not only my best friend back, but to have made some wonderful new friends, friends that I can't wait to get to know better. Lemon and Vinyl are amazing girls that I never would have offered a second glance before. I'm so glad they came through for me and saw something in me that I didn't. Truly, I owe everything to them. It's likely that I'd never have been able to feel this way again if not for them, to feel the way I feel towards... her.

In the end, I can't deny that I love Sour Sweet in more ways than one. At least she'll appreciate it now, unlike when we were young. She's smarter, more mature, and most importantly, so am I.

Moondancer closed her notebook and crossed her legs.

"I'm... okay with this. This is good."

Author's Notes:

Wow this took way longer to write than I thought it would. It also ended up being way longer! Sheesh...

Well, thanks for making it to the end. Hope ya liked it =D
If you didn't like it... damn. I'll try harder next time.
