Chapter 24: Chapter 19

“Well, Your Highness, perhaps you could visit me in my dreams?” you ask as blood rushes to your face. “I-I’ve heard you can do that, and-“

“Consider it done,” Princess Luna tells you, cutting you off. “I can spare a little time to do just that; not many foals have nightmares during the daytime, anyway.” She turns around and closes the door behind her without another word. It felt a little abrupt, but…was it meant to be?

You were a little nervous and curious, but nonetheless you fall asleep almost as quickly as your head hits the pillow after you get back to the barracks. Just as your fuzzy thoughts about the day begin to coalesce into a dream, Princess Luna suddenly arrives, which seems to clear your mind. You feel almost as sharp as when you were awake, but with a strange sensation that you were floating.

“Hello there,” she says with a warm smile. “Here, as promised.”

You look her up and down for a moment. “How can I be sure you’re really Princess Luna, and not just my dream version of her?”

Her eyes widen at the thought. “Ah, an excellent question! And one that I am asked far too infrequently!” She waves a hoof and immediately you are transported to a scene depicting what appears to be an edgy teenage Princess Celestia with black highlights yelling that she’s serious about wanting to conquer and enslave other territories.

“It isn’t ‘just a phase’, Starswirl!” she cries through some thick, metal doors.

Princess Luna turns to you. “So embarrassing! This actually happened, by the way. I wasn’t the first one to come up with the idea of turning evil. Just the first to implement it.” By the way her right ear droops as she speaks, you can tell that she’s depressed herself with her own words.

Time to move the conversation along. “So you can change dreams. My own psyche would be able to do that too, right?”

Princess Luna rolls her eyes and uses her magic to clear away the cringy theater show. “Look, I came out to your dream because that’s the reward you wanted. You don’t have to trust me…” She leans in and narrows her eyes at you, “but it’s not wise to reject a Princess’ gift, especially when you are to see her tomorrow during your shift. So, art thou feeling lucky, knave?”

You force your demeanor to change instantaneously after an extremely brief cost-benefit analysis. “Your Highness,” you beam nervously, “so glad you could make it! Thank you for coming!”

She tilts her head and smiles, closing her eyes as she does so. You notice she doesn’t pull back from her previously intimidating position. “You are most welcome. What do you have planned for me?”

Your eyes widen and you crane your neck around the blank dreamscape. “Uh…planned?”

“It’s your dream. You can make whatever world you wish. I, of course, can as well, although I assume since you asked me here…”

“N-no worries!” you tell her a little too loudly as your brain scrambles for purchase. “I-I have something great in mind!"
