Twilight's Struggle: Equestria In the Cold War

by Christopher Massoud Bush

Chapter 83: Chapter 27

Previous Chapter

June 6, 1949
Lyra and Bon Bon’s House, Ponyville

Bon Bon looked into the mirror, analyzing the pony facade that she had been forced to don for years now. Shifting forms, Bon Bon changed back into her natural Changeling form. When she meant natural Changeling form, she meant the dark black exoskeleton that she had been born with, not the candy colored shell that “reformed” Changelings assumed when they started giving love and stopped taking it from others. It’s not that she didn’t like the more friendly appearance that reformed Changelings had, it's just that she preferred the colour black.
It had been nearly a decade since her reformation. She had come to appreciate the importance of giving love from her then friend, now girlfriend Lyra Heartstrings. When they had first met, she had been searching for a pony to feed on. However, as she worked to gain her targets trust, she came to feel guilt at the prospect of harming Lyra. And as she fell in love with Lyra, she discovered that she could feel more satisfied by loving someone than by sucking the love out from them.
She has felt more fulfilled living with Lyra than at any part of her life. She was receiving love and giving it like a normal loving couple would. However, while she trusted Lyra with her life, she had never revealed her Changing identity and the fact that their first encounters had been driven by malicious intent. Bon Bon simply couldn’t run the risk of losing her soulmate.
Since adopting a pony alias, Bon Bon had lived a regular life as an owner of a candy store. Or so ponies thought. Shortly after defecting from the Changeling Kingdom, Bon Bon had enlisted her services for the Equestrian government, who were more than eager to have a shapeshifting ally in their ranks. Bon Bon had used her talents to infiltrate countless crime syndicates, gangs, and militant cells, earning the praise and generous about of bits (which were of course deposited in anonymous bank accounts.)

In recent weeks, she had been instructed to practice assuming and holding human disguises, presumably in order to infiltrate human governments. Much to the disappointment of her bosses, she found it difficult to hold a disguise for more than two hours. Normally a Changeling could hold another creature's form for weeks on end. However, assuming the form of a creature that was much larger than Changelings was a severe drain on her Changeling magic, requiring periodic breaks in order to recharge their magic.

“Hey Bon Bon, I’m back home!” shouted a familiar voice from downstairs.

Quickly, Bon Bon donned her pony disguise. “I’m coming Lyra!” yelled Bon Bon as she rushed downstairs.

“How was the candy shop today?” asked Lyra as she sat down on the couch in her “human” way.

“Pretty busy. Ever since the summer tourist season began its been really hectic. But at least these human tourists bring in a lot of money.”

“Tell me about it,” replied Lyra. “My job as a human tour guide has been hellish for the past few weeks as I take humans around our town and show them all of the landmarks. However, it seems that all they care about is having their picture taken in front of Twilight’s Castle.”

“Typical tourists,” said Bon Bon. Recently it felt that Ponyville’s small town feel was gradually disappearing as tourists from the human realms flooded Equestria and its neighbors.

Lyra leaned over and sprawled out across the couch, sensuously yawning in the process.

“I could go for a back massage right now Bon Bon,” said the mint green unicorn.

“Sure thing,” said Bon Bon as she began to tenderly rub her lovers back.

Sure life may have been hectic. But no matter what happened, Bon Bon knew she would always have Lyr by her side. And that’s all that would matter.
