Chapter 1, Part 1

Twilight Sparkle walked into her castle in Ponyville. She had just gotten back from visiting Rarity’s Boutique. Rarity’s younger sister, Sweetie Belle had began taking classes in magic, with Twilight serving as her teacher. The young filly was displaying extraordinary abilities that impressed Twilight.

“Perhaps her cutie mark should have been in being a good student,” mused the Alicorn Princess to herself.

Spike approached her as she made her way down the corridor to her room.

“How’s my favorite dragon doing today?” inquired Twilight playfully.

“I received a letter from Princess Celestia that has your name written all over it,” replied Spike, handing an unopened scroll to Twilight, who proceeded to unroll it using her horn’s magic.

“My faithful student Twilight,

I urgently request that you come to my castle in Canterlot. I have made a startling discovery that necessitates your immediate presence.

Love,

Princess Celestia

“That’s odd,” thought Twilight. It’s unlike the Princess to leave her with so little information. However, she sensed that time was of the essence. Informing Spike of the contents of the letter, she promised that she would return as swiftly as possible to him.

Bounding out of the door, she proceeded to take off, using her powerful wings to lift her hundreds of feet off of the ground within a matter of seconds. Turning herself to the northeast, she flew away from Ponyville and raced towards Canterlot, which was just visible on the horizon.

Little did she know that she would be racing towards a historical event that would forever change both her world and another.

Gates of Princess Celestia’s Castle

Twilight landed on the pavement outside of Celestia’s Castle, her heart racing as she gasped for breath. She hadn’t flown this fast in ages.

The bewildered guards snapped to attention, proceeding to open the gates for the Princess of Friendship. Silently she made her way down the hallowed corridors of the Royal Canterlot Castle and made her way to Celestia’s throne room.

Celestia was sitting on her throne, a worried look serving as the only distraction to the normally otherwise regal display. Seated on her left and right were Luna, the Princess of the Night, and Cadence, her sister in law and the ruler of the Crystal Empire. Both also shared the same concerned look.

“I came as soon as I got your letter,” said Twilight. “What’s the matter?”

“Hello, Twilight,” said Celestia, her motherly tone helping to slightly soothe Twilight’s nerves. “I have disastrous news to deliver to you, as well as some information that may provide hopeful.”

Confused, Twilight remained silent, deciding to let the mighty albino Alicorn to continue.

“Two days ago, while Luna was observing the night sky, she made a most shocking discovery. Near the planet Janov, the outermost planet in our solar system, she sensed an asteroid that was on a perfect trajectory to strike our planet.”

An audible gasp came from Twilight’s mouth. The thought of all of her friends, no, all life on her planet getting obliterated in an asteroid impact filled her with fear. She struggled to keep her composure. She could feel her legs turning to jello. She decided to sit down than to take the risk of losing her balance.

“Isn’t there something we can do?! Luna don’t you have control of the stars and the planets?! Can’t you simply deflect it away?!” she yelled, asking her mentors to save Equestria, as if they needed imploring.

Luna broke her silence. “Normally that would be the case, Twilight. However, for some reason that I cannot explain, it would appear that the asteroid isn’t responsive to my magic. There appears to be some sort of curse imposed upon it. It’s almost as if there is some life out there that is committed to ensuring our destruction.”

Twilight nearly lost it at this piece of information. All of her friends and family, erased in an instant. She felt a wave of anger surge inside of her, this frustration stemming from the sense of powerlessness that overcame her.

“However Twilight, do not lose all hope.”

Twilight looked up to Celestia as the ruler made her way off of her throne to embrace her.

“My Twilight, over the past two days I have desperately searched through the Royal Archives. Fortunately, I was able to find some of Starswirl the Bearded’s spells relating to cosmic events. What I found may serve as our planet’s deliverance.”

Pausing to light up her horn’s magic, Celestia then proceeded to cast an image in front of Twilight. It appeared as if there were thousands of tiny dots and bubbles in front of her. However, as she looked closer, she could see what appeared to be the spirals of several universes inside of each of the bubbles.

“Twilight, have you ever heard of the Multiverse Theory?” inquired Celestia.

“Yes I have. I’m no expert in astronomy, but if I’m not mistaken, it’s the belief that outside of our universe there are several other universes existing, potentially numbering in the millions.”

“I see you have studied well Twilight,” said Celestia, warmly reminding Twilight of the now seemingly distant days when she was but a young filly and a student of Celestia.

“Out of the plethora of Universes in existence, there is one Universe that is nearly identical to our own in both shape and structure. Fortunately, for us there is also a habitable planet, similar to ours located in the same exact location of this ‘clone’ universe.”

“What are you saying?” asked Twilight.

“Starswirl the Bearded predicted that an apocalyptic event from beyond our world would someday strike Equestria. Of course I never believed such doomsday prophecies, but it would appear that I have been proven wrong by recent events. In addition to the prophecy, Starswirl the Bearded, created an untested spell, that theoretically possesses the capacity to teleport us from one dimension to another. It is that spell which we must use if we are to save Equestria from certain doom.”

“There’s no catch? This’ll be easy!” said Twilight, relieved that the seemingly existential crisis had been butterflied away.

“Far from it Twilight,” scolded Celestia. “This will be the most difficult magic any of us will ever have performed in our lives.”

Instantly, Twilight's ecstasy evaporated.

Celestia continued, “Even if everything goes as planned, we cannot know with absolute certainty whether or not this unproven spell will work or even if we will be able to land on this planet.”

Twilight interrupted, “if it’s so dangerous why do we do it? Certainly there could be another way.”

Celestia responded, “I’m afraid not Twilight. There is not other existing magical spells that would enable us to accomplish a similar task. We don’t possess the capacity to destroy the asteroid either with magic or via more mundane means. Do nothing will undoubtedly result in the total extermination of life on our planet. We have no other option than to test our luck,” responded the Sun Princess as she returned to her throne.

Floating a book that looked as if it had existed for at least several hundred years from the table next to Luna, Celestia said to Twilight, “here is the book that contains Starswirl the Bearded’s spell. Over the next couple of days, I expect you to learn the spell contained therein. We have to move swiftly if we are to ensure that we can escape the doom hurtling towards us from the heavens.”

Twilight silently accepted the book and proceed to make her way out of the room. She felt as if the fate of the world hung on her shoulders. In this case it quite literally did.
