Prologue-That Fateful Night
The night lay still. Nothing made a sound. Even the wind was silent. Ponyville lay in a tranquil slumber, the Castle of Friendship lifeless and still. Then…
Hoofsteps. Light hoofsteps broke the silence
Seven cloaked ponies approached the castle doors. Opening it silently, they entered. Passing the Map without a second glance, the seven ponies did not even speak to each other. But one's voice spoke, even if he was the only one to hear it.
Gallant Heart scowled. He knew what he had decided to do, and he was ready.
"This will change Equestria for the better." he told himself quietly. "It has to."
"Quiet!" Prince Blueblood whispered reproachfully. The moonlight gleamed off their orichalum daggers as they walked through the hallways, past a statue. The statue equine in shape, around Celestia's size. It bore a great shield and a large sword. It was clad in plate-mail armor unlike anything seem in Equestria, and its head was that of a pony, only obscured by a helmet. It stood dead and silent as the ponies passed it. Gallant Heart glanced at it before quickly rushing forward. Then, the statue's eyes glowed a brilliant blue as the stone turned into the remains of a ghostly warrior. The statue moved and stepped down from its podium. It slowly drew its blade from its scabbard and lowered its head. Changing into a blue ethereal frost lined with crystals, the mist followed the cloaked ponies stealthily until they reached their destination.
The bedroom of Twilight Sparkle, sleeping peacefully within. The ponies opened the door and walked in, their daggers poised to kill. Gallant Heart stepped forward, and raised his dagger above her heart. Then, the mist formed behind him, and as he turned to the sound of crackling frost, the warrior appeared, its sword held vertically with its shield in a similar position. It took a step towards Gallant, who was frozen in fear and shock.
"Begone, foul trespassers. BEGONE!" the warrior spoke before grabbing Gallant and throwing him through the wall of the bedroom with colossal crash and shattering the wall of crystal. Twilight's eyes opened in a flash, along with Spike's. Before they could scream, Twilight ducked downwards to avoid an assassin, who was being swung like a lariat by the warrior. The warrior then slammed the killer into the floor. The assassins lunged as one at the warrior, their daggers poised to kill. But the warrior scoffed and thrust his arms outward, and they were thrown backward by a pulse of magic. Blueblood tried to scamper away, but the warrior grabbed him by the cloak and grasped his throat, beginning to strangle him. As Blueblood began to suffocate and gag, the warrior growled and threw him to the floor with enough force to crack the crystalline floor. Then, he noticed Gallant Heart trying to limp away weakly. The warrior said nothing as he stomped on his back left leg, crushing the bone to powder. Then, as Gallant screamed in pain, the warrior began to throw punch after punch into the assassin's face, breaking the pony's nose. Then, Twilight screamed again, and the warrior ceased his blows, leaving Gallant Heart in a blood pulp. The warrior walked towards Twilight, who was charging her magic to fend him off. Then…
He brushed a stray hair out of her eyes.
Twilight stood in shock as the warrior then kneeled to her.
"You are safe." the warrior said, almost with an air of relief. "I am relieved. Shall I resume my vigil, Element of Magic?"
"Yes...I mean no..I mean, what's going on here?" Twilight said, stammering. The warrior rose and took off his helmet, revealing the head of a pony, with pale lilac eyes and a dark blue coat. His mane was a deep black.
"I am the Sentinel of Harmony." the warrior said. "It has been my duty to protect this castle and the tree of harmony. I have stood this vigil for one thousand years."
"What?" Twilight said, shocked.
"Allow me to start from the beginning." the warrior said. "I have no name or memories. Only a purpose in this life. For when I was alive, I was chosen by the Tree of Harmony to protect it from those who would abuse its power. For a thousand years I stood my vigil, until I was sealed in the Lockbox till when I was needed again. Upon the defeat of the demon Tirek, I was released into the world of the living. My previous purpose fulfilled, I was given a new vigil. Protect the Castle and its Element of Magic from those who sought to do the element harm. Until this night, I have had no need to reveal myself to you and to your companion, thus you had no knowledge of my existence. When the trespassers attempted to assault you upon these grounds, my vigil was disturbed. To those who disturb the vigil of the Sentinel, they are promised and given due punishment."
"You...protected me from them?" Twilight said. "Why?"
The Sentinel picked up one of the Orichalum daggers, and handed it to her. Twilight gasped at the sight of the only metal fatal to Alicorns. She turned it over in her hooves, her face livid in shock.
"They were attempting to slay you while you rested." the Sentinel said. "My vigil forced me to intervene to protect you from any harm."
Twilight sighed and placed the dagger in her nightstand drawer.
"Thank you, Sentinel." she said with a sigh of relief. "Spike?"
"Yeah? Is it safe out there?" came Spike's voice from under the bed.
"It's safe. It was just the Castle's Sentinel protecting me." Twilight said, pulling him out. Twilight told Spike who the Sentinel was, and he sighed in relief.
"I guess I should thank you too." he said.
"It is most welcome." the Sentinel said. " It would be wise to alert the Princesses of Sun and Moon of this. I shall patrol and make sure there are no more hidden threats."
"Thank you." Twilight said. Scribbling a letter of distress to Celestia, and after enclosing the orichalum dagger, Spike sent it with a breath of fire. Not one second later, a reply came.
I'm coming, Twilight. Stay in your room until I arrive.
Twilight rushed out of bed, and helped by Spike, tied up the assassins. After locking the daggers in the kitchen, they brought them to the main hall and lined them up. At that moment, two platoons of Solar Guards rushed in, followed by Celestia, who immediately embraced Twilight with a hug of deep relief.
"Sweep the castle!" Celestia cried.
"That is not necessary, Princess of the Sun."
The Guards turned to see the Sentinel walk forward
"There are no hidden threats in this castle. Have the guards set up a perimeter around this castle. I can account for my actions tonight." Sentinel said.
"Celestia, he's telling the truth." Twilight said, upon seeing Celestia's expression of doubt. "He saved my life and Spike's from those assassins. I promise you, he is no threat."
Celestia sighed and did as the Sentinel recommended. As the Guards hauled the killers outside, Celestia sat down at the table, along with Twilight and Spike.
"You going to sit down?" Spike asked Sentinel, seeing he was still standing.
"Only when I am asked to by the Element of Magic will I rest." he replied.
"You can rest now, Sentinel." Twilight said. The Sentinel bowed and sat down.
"Twilight, what happened here?" Celestia asked. Twilight told her of the attempted assassination, and how the Sentinel easily dispatched them. At the end, Celestia sighed.
"Sentinel, I thank you most greatly."
"Most welcome." Sentinel replied.
"Sentinel…" Celestia said. "Why? All of them are critically wounded, with one on the verge of death! Why did you assault them so...brutally?"
"My vigil demands any who disturb my watch must be dealt harshest punishment up to the verge of death." Sentinel said. "It is my duty, and my burden."
Celestia sighed and set down her teacup.
"Sentinel...your actions were heroic. You saved my student from death. My only concern is that we will not be able to see how far this...web of treason goes." she said.
"As a web catches a fly…" the Sentinel said. "So shall we catch those who have planned and committed this treachery."
"Indeed." Celestia said. "Sentinel, can you watch over my student until her safety is guaranteed?"
"It is never a matter of "can", Princess of the Sun." Sentinel said. "It is a matter of "will." And I will protect her."
Twilight sighed and smiled.
"Thank you, Sentinel."
"Princess!" A guard poked his head in. "One of them is awake!"
"Bring him in." Celestia said. An assassin was dragged in and forced to his knees. Celestia stood before him, unbridled fury in her eyes.
"Why?" she asked simply.
"Because it needed to happen." the assassin replied. "Her schemes and "reforms" threatened Equestria. We simply could not let that happen. We were doing it for Equestria's sake."
"You did it for your own sake!" Celestia roared.
"What we attempted tonight would've led Equestria to GLORY!" he spat, struggling to free himself. Sentinel drew his sword and advanced on him. This sight froze the assassin with fear.
"Sentinel, stop!" Twilight yelled. The Sentinel nodded, stepped back, and sheathed his sword. The assassin was dragged out, and Celestia sighed.
"Guards, gather the Elements and bring them here. We're heading to Canterlot as soon as possible. Sentinel, you're coming as well." Celestia said.
"As you wish." Sentinel replied.
Chapter 1-The Day is Dawning
As soon as the Solar Guard appeared in front of Applejack, she knew something was wrong. At the words "assassination attempt", Applejack sprinted off towards the castle, and was soon joined by Rainbow, Pinkie, Fluttershy, and Rarity, and four other Solar Guards. Blasting through the castle door, they fell into a pile at the sight of Twilight, alive and well.
"Hey, girls." Twilight said, before being crushed by a hug from each of her friends.
"You're okay! We totally need to have a PARTY!" Pinkie yelled. "Oh, wait. We still got those meanies to deal with!"
"Don't worry about the assassins." Twilight said. "My new guardian took care of them."
"What?" Applejack asked.
"Lemme start from the beginning." Twilight said. She recounted the events of the previous hour, and by the end, even Rainbow was slightly scared at the deeds of the Sentinel.
"He took them all out?" Rainbow said, shocked.
"Yes. Quite easily." Twilight said, "Listen, we're all heading to Canterlot. The Sentinel should be back anytime now…"
"I have returned, Element of Magic."
Each pony turned to see the Sentinel walk in. At the sight of him, Pinkie began to stammer.
"S...S...SO COOL!" she yelled. The Sentinel gave her an inquisitive look.
"I am fine in terms of body temperature, Element of Laughter. Is this some kind of humor?"
"Nah!" she said. "Just saying you're AWESOME!"
The Sentinel bowed in response.
"Princess, the train is awaiting us." The Sentinel said.
"Alright, let's go." Twilight said. As the Sentinel and the Solar Guards headed to the Train Station, Rainbow looked in slight fright at the Sentinel.
"If Twilight trusts you…" she said quietly. "Then I do too."
============
As the Elements, escorted by the Solar Guards and the Sentinel, arrived at the Train Station, Twilight noticed the train had a guard posted to each window.
"For your protection." The Sentinel said to Twilight, when he noticed her inquisitive look. Twilight led the Elements into a separate car, and soon, the train was moving. The Sentinel sat down and removed his helmet, revealing his face to the other Elements.
"Wow." was all the Elements could say. The Sentinel nodded and closed his eyes, beginning to meditate.
"Twi, I think we should get some actual sleep." Applejack said. "I think we're safe, at least for now."
"Sentinel?" Twilight said.
"I shall watch you." the Sentinel replied. As he, Twilight, and Spike walked into a sleeping car, Applejack looked over at Rainbow.
"Think they'll be alright?"
Rainbow sighed.
"From what I've seen...yes."
==========================
As the train arrived at Canterlot, Twilight woke up to the Sentinel already awake.
"Princess, we have arrived." he said.
"Thank you, Sentinel." She replied. As she woke a grumpy Spike, the Sentinel walked out to see several Solar Guard awaiting them. Sentinel stood in front of the door, blocking their path until Twilight walked past him, followed by Spike.
"Princess, this way." The Guard leader said. The Sentinel took the point position, and as the elements joined them, the guards and Sentinel led the way through the streets. Occasionally, a passing citizen would glance and stare, or whisper at the sight of the Sentinel. Twilight looked at him, though he seemed to be calm and at peace.
"Princess Twilight, Princess Celestia is expecting you." A guard said upon arriving at the Castle. Twilight thanked them, and as they departed, The Sentinel nodded and escorted Twilight, Spike, and the Elements to a secured Dining room. As the seven of them sat down, Celestia and Luna looked at her with relief.
"Was your trip safe?" Celestia asked.
"Yes." Twilight replied. "No disturbances. Sentinel kept watch the whole night."
"Good. The guards have not managed to get any of the assassins to speak of the conspiracy. All still refuse to talk. Amadeus Blueblood has also gone missing, and we suspect she is part of the conspiracy."
"It is just logic." Sentinel said. "Adequate search forces must be rallied in order to find her."
"We shall do so." Luna said. "Though, finding how far this conspiracy stretches is our first priority."
"If I may…" Sentinel said. "Our first priority should be to protect the Element of Magic. She is still in danger. Until the threat on her life has been lifted, it would not be wise to let our guard down."
"A fair point." Luna said.
"So it is." Sentinel said. "However, as Canterlot is rife with the schemes of nobles, and Ponyville is no longer safe, we must find a safe haven for the Element of Magic."
"You are not wrong." Luna said. "The Crystal Empire, perhaps? Shining Armor and Cadance would be glad to see you."
"Sure." Twilight said. "You hungry, Sentinel?"
"I require no sustenance." Sentinel replied. "As a spirit of Harmony, I need no refreshment, but the thought is appreciated."
"Alright." Twilight said.
The Sentinel nodded in response. A Solar Guard walked in, bearing a letter addressed to Celestia. Celestia took it, and the guard walked out. Celestia sighed upon finishing.
"We have a new foe to contend with. Amadeus has an alicorn child."
"What?" Luna and Twilight said at the same time, full of shock.
"Yes. Majesty is an alicorn. And Amadeus has set himself on the path to rebuilding Unicornia. They already have an army of mercenaries at their back."
"Then we must leave right away." Sentinel said.
"Agreed." Twilight said. Then, the ground shook and the castle rumbled. Sentinel got up, drew his sword, and advanced to the window.
"We are too late. We must leave NOW." he said, opening the curtain. In the streets below, pandemonium was nigh. Mercenaries bearing the flag of a unicorn's horn and a star advanced, battling the Solar and Lunar guard as they went. Twilight gasped at the sight of the chaos in the streets.
Sentinel said nothing as he, Twilight, Celestia, and Luna rushed out, and were soon joined by a platoon of mixed Solar and Lunar Guards.
"Get a shield around the palace!" Sentinel said. "If this castle falls, the land falls with it!"
As the Guards sealed the doors with powerful magic, which Celestia and Luna reinforced with their own magic, the Sentinel escorted Twilight to the postern gate.
===============
Outside, the mercenaries attempted to blast through the castle gate, with no success. As the Solar Guard and Lunar Guards retreated beyond the gates, Amadeus Blueblood watched from afar, with an alicorn teen by her side.
"Lord Blueblood, the sisters have reinforced the gate and placed a shield around the palace. We're not getting in anytime soon." a mercenary reported.
"No matter. We control the city. That's enough to rally other nations to our cause." Amadeus said.
"What of the other assassins? Were they not captured?" Majesty asked.
"They're done for." Amadeus said. "Let us consolidate our grip on the commoners."
===============
At the postern gate, Twilight was ushered into a subterranean tunnel, lined with stone support beams and torches.
"What is this?" Twilight asked Celestia.
"A tunnel built during the early days of Canterlot, when we were still at war." Celestia replied. "It was mainly used as an escape route for sieges. Now, this tunnel will take us to a safe location where we can travel to the Empire."
As they walked, the Sentinel never left Twilight's side, his hand on his sword. After thirty minutes, they arrived at an exit to the surface. Twilight's eyes took in a small lodge built into a mountainside forest.
"How far away did we go?" Twilight asked upon seeing Canterlot in the far distance.
"Quite a distance, Twilight." Celestia said. "That tunnel was more than an escape route. It was also enchanted to take whoever walked along it to wherever they wished. It appears to our enemies to have collapsed, since it could only be used once."
"Wow." Twilight said. "What's with the house?"
"It's one of our old hunting lodges left over from unification." Luna said. "We vacationed here a few times."
As they walked inside, the guards set up positions, while Twilight took a look around. Celestia set to writing a letter to Cadance, and Luna started sending messages to various cities, asking for help. The Sentinel followed Twilight, and eventually they ended up at a small garden. Twilight sat down on a bench, and the Sentinel did so as well.
"Are you alright, Element of Magic?" he asked.
"It just seems so...terrifying." she said. "Amadeus once compared me to Queen Chrysalis. I didn't know I was so hated that they would try to kill me while I slept!"
"It is disturbing. However, there is still light in the dark." Sentinel said. "I know who can help us."
"Who?" Twilight asked.
"The Tree of Harmony." Sentinel said. "When it was formed during the days of unification, a great army was set upon the path to its destruction by a powerful General. When the General attempted to claim the Tree's power, the Tree sensed his malice, but also his bravery, his genius in the art of war. He was not cursed to die, as others have, but he and his army were sent to a realm unseen, where they would wait until called."
"Why is this important?" Twilight asked.
"Because this army is not of the living." Sentinel said. "The General and his forces were cursed to an existence of living sleep, bound to the tree's service. When the tree calls, they are forced to answer. This army, if released from the Tree's power, would prove to be a powerful ally in our fight against our foes."
"Sentinel, what was the name of this General?" Twilight.
Sentinel looked her in the eye.
"His name is Scipio. And he possesses the army we need to defeat our foes."
"Where can we find him?" Twilight asked.
"The Tree of Harmony sealed Scipio in a cavern to the north from whence he came, in a monument to all his sins."
"Then...that would place him near the Empire." Twilight said.
"Indeed. However, Scipio was known to be a proud general. Convincing him will be a difficult task."
"How do you know this?" Twilight asked.
"Because…" Sentinel said.
"I fought for him, many years ago."
Chapter 2-Questions without Answers
As Twilight watched the Sentinel meditate, she sighed with exhaustion. Celestia and Luna had wholeheartedly agreed to the Sentinel's plan, and since it was near the Crystal Empire, their next destination, it was made easier. However, news from Canterlot had arrived, and it was not good. Amadeus had "paid" the mercenaries by allowing them to loot the homes of the nobility that still supported Celestia and Twilight. The Solar and Lunar Guards still loyal to the sisters had pulled out, and Canterlot had fallen.
"Damn it." Twilight said, looking at the Canterlot skyline. She sighed again and looked over at Sentinel, who was finishing his meditation.
"Element of Magic, is something on your mind?" he asked.
Twilight sat down next to him.
"A few things. One, Sentinel, can you just call me Twilight? "Element of Magic" seems a bit formal for my taste."
"As you wish."
"Two, if Scipio agrees to fight with us, what will we repay him with?"
"I cannot say."
"Alright...three...you said you didn't have a name. If you remember Scipio, can you remember your name?"
The Sentinel focused intently, and he sighed.
"I cannot remember."
"Well, you tried. And I guess that's what counts. I'll just call you Sentinel for now." Twilight said, suppressing a yawn.
"It is apparent you need rest." Sentinel said, not looking away.
"You're right." Twilight said. "See you in the morning."
As Twilight walked off, the Sentinel stood up, and underneath his helmet, he sighed.
"She is more than capable of being a princess." he thought. "Why anyone would want her demise, I do not know."
==================
Back in Canterlot, Majesty Blueblood watched as the guards attempted to batter down the gates to Canterlot Castle, with no success. She sighed, tossed her hair, and walked back into the Blueblood Estate, passing by several maids, mercenaries, and nobles. She eventually walked into her chambers, and collapsed on the bed. Her white coat and silvery blue hair glistened in the moonlight, and she sighed.
"Why?" she asked herself. "Why did all this have to happen? I know what father expects of me, but....did she truly have to die for what she believed in? I certainly believe a war is not necessary!"
She tossed and turned, and eventually, she fell asleep.
================
Her eyes opened to see herself in a cave, deep underground. There, before her, was the Tree of Harmony. Then, there was a bright light, and when it dimmed, she was in the walls of Canterlot Castle, but there was no color, only white.
"Where am I?" she asked.
"You are in my embrace, Majesty Blueblood."
She turned to see six gems appear and form a hexagon.
"You're the Tree of Harmony, correct?" she asked.
"Yes." The Tree replied. "I am here to warn you."
"Warn me?" she asked.
"Yes. When the Princess Twilight was to be killed, my Sentinel intervened and stopped them. For if he had failed, Equestria would be plunged into chaos and disharmony, as the true rulers and their usurpers fought for power. By the end, you, and few others would be left to rule over a wasteland, a war-scarred, desolate Equestria. All because they did not believe her."
"You're saying that... If she died, everything my father says we're trying to protect would die?" she asked.
"Yes. You yourself would not perish, but your father and countless innocents would die because of Amadeus's lust for power. But you...Majesty, you are different. You heard his teachings, but you did not take them to heart. You still possess a pure spirit, one that could end this conflict, if only you see how."
"I...guess I do have a lot of questions that Father refuses to answer…" she said.
"Indeed. Those questions are well-founded. You, Majesty, are a tool in your father's eyes, in his quest for power. But there is still hope for peace. You know what to do."
==========
Majesty's eyes flared open, revealing the night sky and the moon rising through her bedchamber window. She took in the image and sighed.
"What must I do?" she asked. "What can I do?"
Then, she looked at the moon with new determination.
"I think it's time to get some answers, whether Father approves...or not." she said with furrowed brow.
==========
Meanwhile, on the train to the Crystal Empire, the Sentinel's eyes opened from his meditation. He sighed, hoisted his sword, and walked into Twilight's room to check on her. To his relief, she was undisturbed. He closed the door to her cabin and sat down to resume meditating.
Chapter 3-To the Empire
As the train carrying the Princesses, the Guards, and the Sentinel headed north towards the empire, Twilight looked outside her window at the moonlit night. A tear streaked down her face, and she brushed it away.
"Twilight, are you alright?"
She turned to see Sentinel walk up.
"I'm alright." she said. The Sentinel nodded and sat next to her.
"Sentinel...what can you tell me about Scipio?" she asked.
"Scipio was known as "The Northern Dragon." Sentinel said. "He inspired much bravery in his troops. He did not rely on brute force, but on trickery and tactics. He was tutored by Sun Flame, the great dragon Tactician and general himself. He was all but invincible in battle."
"Then how was he defeated?" Twilight asked.
"Remember, he attempted to claim the Tree of Harmony as his final prize of war. The Tree then cursed him to his ghostly existence. It took the Tree's power to force his bended knee." Sentinel said. "His army was cursed along with him. I was one of them. The Tree chose me to become its Sentinel, for I was his lieutenant. Those memories of that time are gone, but my battle prowess remains."
"I see." Twilight said, yawning.
"You should get some sleep." Sentinel said.
Twilight nodded and set her head down on the pillow, and soon, she was asleep.
============
As the train arrived in the Empire, Twilight was swept up by a hug from both Cadance and Shining Armor, both of whom were relieved to see her alive. After the Sentinel was introduced, they headed towards the palace. Shining looked over at the Sentinel, who was garnering many looks of shock and awe.
"Are you okay, Your highness?" the Sentinel asked.
"Yes, I'm fine." Shining replied. "I can't help but feel grateful to you for saving my sister."
"It is well-received." The Sentinel replied. "Let us hope we can win this war."
"Let's." Shining said. As they walked into the Crystal Palace, Twilight sighed.
============
Majesty Blueblood stormed out of her father's room, angry and sullen. Her questions to her father had been met with hostility and anger, and she had been told to never speak of them again. Majesty swore loudly, and stormed into her room.
"Skies above us, I…" she growled, slamming her hoof into her desk. Then, an idea clicked in her mind.
"Time to get some answers." she said, charging her horn for a teleportation. She vanished in a flash of violet light.
==============
Much later, As Twilight packed supplies and provisions into her saddlebags, Sentinel walked up, bearing a large bundle roll.
"Safe travels, Twilight." Celestia said. "And be careful."
"I will." Twilight said. As they exited the Empire's limits and vanished from sight into the mountains, Cadance, Shining, Celestia, and Luna watched.
"Think Twily will be alright?" Shining asked.
"If there is even a fool's hope…" Celestia said. "It is still hope."
As they departed, the winds started to blow.
===============
Twilight and Sentinel walked along a stone path, worn from centuries of disrepair. Sentinel walked in stride, the cold winds not bothering him in the slightest.
"Twilight, we must keep moving." Sentinel said at Twilight, who was lagging behind.
"We've been walking along this path for hours now." Twilight said, exhausted.
"The Monument is not much farther." Sentinel said. "After this pass, we will arrive. I cannot take your exhaustion from you, but I can share my strength with you."
Sentinel picked Twilight up and carried her along the path, sheltering her from the wind. Then, at the end of the path, was a cave. Sentinel set her down and summoned ethereal blue flames to warm them.
"Sentinel...Will Scipio even listen to us?" Twilight asked after she had eaten.
"It is uncertain." Sentinel said. "Scipio was brash, bold. Often he sent men into clear traps because he knew they would triumph over whatever came to fight them. Overtime, he began to regard himself as invincible. He will not be an easy being to persuade."
"Then we'll have to wait...and hope." Twilight said, yawning and starting to fall asleep.
"We shall proceed into the Monument at tomorrow's first light." Sentinel said. "Get some rest, Twilight."
"Sure."
As Twilight unfurled her sleeping bag and collapsed into slumber, Sentinel closed his eyes, knowing what would come.
"You have returned…" said a voice in his head, deep and dark.
"I seek your aid, Scipio." Sentinel said/
"So you say. You did fight for me...Sirius."
"That name was cast aside long ago." Sentinel said. "I am Sentinel now."
Scipio laughed.
"If you insist...Sentinel. However...If you truly seek my aid, you must face me like you did then. I will not hold back."
"As you wish, but know this...Scipio, the Northern Dragon…" Sentinel said. "I won't either."
Scipio laughed again.
"Your confidence is astounding. I will enjoy our battle."
"As will I." Sentinel said. "Brother."
==============
As Twilight awoke, Sentinel made sure she had eaten before they began their trek deep into the cave. Eventually, they arrived in a large cavern, and at the far end, was a withered oak tree, scorched by flame.
"You have come, Sentinel."
Twilight then saw the forms of thousands of steel-clad warriors, their war-paint crimson red, staring at them from all directions. Then, a unicorn, clad in armor emblazoned with red streaks and ebony, with a plumed helmet, walk forward. His skin was once grey, but now an acidic green glow came from him, as did all his warriors. His face was gaunt, and he laughed.
"An alicorn?" he said. "Who might you be?"
"Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship." Twilight said. "You are Scipio, the Northern Dragon."
"Indeed." Scipio said. "But...did the Solar Princess give you your title? Friendship...bah. Celestia always did have a way with peace, but not with war. It was a result of my conquests that she abstained from battle for her life. That is why Equestria has never fought in a war since my time."
"I can see that happening." Twilight said. "I request your aid, Scipio."
Scipio laughed.
"State your request."
"The Diarchy of Equestria has been usurped by a tyrant, who sent assassins to kill me in my sleep. Now, Equestria is ruled by an iron hoof, one of tyranny and evil." Twilight said.
Scipio grinned.
"I see. I will...consider it...but…"
Scipio strode forward, drawing his sword.
"I still need....motivation...Sentinel, if you will?"
Sentinel drew his sword, and raised his shield.
"You always were a defensive fighter...Brother." Scipio spat, drawing a longspear and a gladius. Twilight gasped at Scipio's words.
"I was." Sentinel said. "I swore to protect her. If that includes fighting you, so be it."
"INDEED!" Scipio said, rushing forward. As the two brothers clashed, Twilight offered a prayer of victory for her guardian.
Chapter 4-Brother's Rosario
As the Sentinel's broadsword and Scipio's gladius slammed with an echoing sound of steel, Twilight watched in livid shock as the Sentinel and Scipio traded blow after blow, Sentinel's shield allowing greater defense, but Scipio was quicker, due to being unburdened by not wearing armor.
"You have sharpened your skills!" Scipio cried.
"I did serve you, brother. Do not forget." Sentinel replied, bracing his shield against Scipio. HE then bashed his brother with his shield. Scipio elegantly backflipped, and landed square on the ground.
"I never forget." Scipio cried, rushing forward again. The two brothers weaved a dance of steel and echoes, neither side scoring a hit on the other. Then, Scipio suddenly buckled. Sentinel knocked his weapons away and then….
Scipio was on his knees, Sentinel's greatsword to his throat.
"Do it, then. Kill me." Scipio taunted.
"Never, brother." Sentinel replied. "Do you accept my ward's request?"
"With honor." Scipio said, standing up. He gave a ghoulish cackle.
"Princess of Friendship, I accept your request. My army is with you. First....we need….motivation. Promise me something."
"State it." Twilight replied.
"When we have fulfilled our quest, release us from this ghostly life." Scipio said.
"Granted." Twilight replied.
Scipio gave a bare-toothed smiled.
"WARRIORS!" he cried. For the first time, his soldiers gave a hellish war cry.
"Tonight, we ride to protect Equestria, from tyrants and assassins! Death awaits our success! We will not fall! We will not fail! TONIGHT, WE BATHE IN HELLFIRE!"
The warriors gave the loudest cry that ever hit Twilight's ears. Scipio smiled and glanced at Twilight.
"When you are ready, simply give the call. We will ride on your command."
A ghostly wisp of energy flowed into Twilight's grasp, and she nodded.
"Thank you, Scipio. Sentinel, let's head back to the Empire."
"As you wish."
"I will be coming, too."
Scipio strode forward.
"I need to catch up with the times. My forces shall be ready."
"If you insist." Twilight replied. As the three of them headed back to the cavern entrance, meanwhile, Majesty Blueblood packed a bag with basic necessities. Her father had managed to acquire Saddle Arabian exiles as additional forces, and had paid them with gold looted from the Canterlot Royal Treasury. He had left to negotiate the contract with them, and Majesty had seized her chance.
"Let's hope this works." she said. Charging her horn, she teleported away in a flash.
==========================
"Flare-spell off the gate!"
Shining and Cadance woke in a flash at the cry.
"What's going on?" Cadance asked.
"I'll go see." Shining said. Grabbing his armor, he walked out of the spire and towards the gate, he was shocked to see several guards with raised lances. Then, he raised his eyebrows. Majesty Blueblood stood defiant, a bundle roll on her back.
"What did you come for, traitor?" Shining spat.
"I came for answers." Majesty replied. "I wish for asylum here."
"Why should I grant this?" Shining replied.
"A few reasons. One, father's newest soldiers, Saddle Arabian exiles, are being paid with Gold from the Canterlot Treasury. Two, I've read his documents. He intends to become a king. And three…"
She took out a scroll sealed with the Blueblood crest and handed it to Shining.
"That." she said.
Shining opened it and his eyebrows hit the roof. The scroll contained perfectly drawn defense layouts for the whole of Canterlot which were established by the Unicornian forces.
"Is this real?" Shining asked.
"It's not the original copy." Majesty replied. "I had to draw that myself. Luckily Father's lessons helped me with my drawing skills."
"Seems he taught you one good thing, then."
Both ponies turned to see Twilight, the Sentinel, and what could only be described as a ghost walk up.
"Twilight Sparkle." Majesty said.
"Majesty." Twilight replied. "I see you've met Shining."
"I have." she said. "Let's move this to proper quarters, shall we? I can barely stand."
"You'll be under heavy guard." Shining said,
"Doesn't matter." Majesty replied. The guards escorted the five of them to the castle as the sun rose.
=============
A mercenary knocked on Majesty's door.
No answer.
He knocked again.
No answer.
He opened the door, and to the mercenary's surprise, there was a note on the desk. He opened it, and rushed out.
=============
Amadeus Blueblood fumed in anger as he incinerated the note, the words fresh in his mind. He scowled and threw the ashes to the floor in sheer fury.
If you won't give me the answers I seek, I'll get them myself...Whether you like it or not.
Goodbye, father.
Majesty.
