Author's Notes:

Words with [ and ] present as my Displaced's telepathic voice.

...I cannot remember how long it’s been since I first came to this world against my will, I arrived as nothing but liquid that could not sustain a physical form, I am able able to sense or feel the presence of others, but when it comes to seeing them, I can only look up toward the sky and anyone else that comes within my point of view, I am stuck as this pool of water within a deep forest.

I have learned how to communicate though, I can telepathically speak by sending ripples through my being, like water droplets hitting a puddle, this in return sends signals those sensitive to magic, of course the only ones who can hear my mind are unicorns so far, I have met quite a number of them, however they never offered any idle conversation, they would either scream in terror and call me a monster, or call me some sort of magical prank created by the other tribes.

It is quite a miserable experience and I’m going to lose my mind, if that is even possible for a magical pool of water, what sort of mad god thought it was wise to turn me into this? Did I sin in my forgotten previous life? have I angered the gods for something I’m not aware of? It is very frustrating.

A unicorn named Clover was the first creature that made any actual contact instead of fleeing in fear, at first he was confused when he heard my voice without a body, confusion turned to curiosity when he drew closer to the pool.

“What… Who are you?” he asked, staring straight into my body.

[I am but a being who has no name, no body, nor a face, all I have is a voice that only ponies like you can hear]

“Are you sure? Everypony has a name, is there any reason why you don’t have one?” he asked, he looked around slowly as if I was here in physical form.

[Alas, I do not]

A moment of silence filled the air as the unicorn started thinking about something… “I think I'll call you Echo, your voice sends ripples throughout the water.” he said with a smile.

[Echo.. I like that…]

Clover smiled at the compliment, honestly I was grateful for the nickname as I cannot remember my name nor who I was before I woke up here.

“Clover, come on boy, where’s that water?” A voice called out in the distance.

“Oh, shoot.. please forgive me but I need some of your water” Clover said, quickly swooping up a full bucket of water using a strange telekinesis spell.

[I don’t mind if you do, I cannot feel a thing except for your voice]

“Who are you talking too?” An old unicorn came out of the bushes.

“Oh, just my new friend Echo.” He points down at me, or rather the large pool that I am now.

“..Are you feeling alright, boy?” the long bearded unicorn said, looking down at me.

[He means me]

When I spoke, the stallion leaped a few feet into the air in shock, he pointed his head down and ignited his horn.

“Wait, what are you doing?!” Clover said in a panic, he reached over, grabbed the wizard’s beard and pulled him away.

“This thing is unnatural!” He exclaimed, looking over at me and then Clover.

[Me? Unnatural? No, I am harmless, much like droplets that fall onto a spider’s web]

“...Hmph, what are you suppose to be anyways?” the beard unicorn asked

[Same thing I told your friend, I am no pony, except by the nickname he had kindly given me]

“Quite peculiar.. Never in my two hundred years seen your kind… Could you perhaps clue me in on what you know?” The blue robed unicorn asked, I let out a gentle echoing sigh, letting out ripples that travel along the surface.

[I have no knowledge nor any memories of who or what I am, I guess I just came into existence]

“Hmm.. Clover, did you try to cast a spell?”

“No, Starswirl..”

“You sure? Alright…” Starswirl said before looking around his surroundings. “No memories what’s so ever, Echo?” He placed a hoof and began stroking his beard. “Clover, come with me, we need to study this water and found out if there’s any magical properties to be found.”

“Oh, alright, see ya Echo!” Clover said before leaving with Starswirl, well it was a nice conversation while it lasted, its back to boredom for the time being.

The second day finally arrived after count a thousand leaves that fell, the old unicorn before the previous day came back, but not with Clover. “Echo is your name, right? According to my studies, you seem to be a different source of magic, however I cannot pinpoint what kind due to the low energy signature, have you ever caste magic before?” He asked

[None, I don’t know how to use magic unless you count me sending a telepathic message to your horns]

Starswirl began to stroke his hoof in concentration, he raised his horn and lowered it gently near my being, me and his horn began to glow a bright blue, I felt a surge of energy rush over me once.. twice, thrice.. “Interested… Your magic is nothing I’ve ever seen before, alienated and unknown...” He started mumbling under his breath afterwards and I could see him lost in a mental trance, he kept glancing down at me as if I was some sort of enigma.

He was like this for a few hours, often casting that same spell again and again, I was growing bored of being treated like a school project, I am alive and an intelligent being afterall.

“Starswirl? How long are you gonna be here?” Clover’s voice rung form behind the trees.

“Oh! Just keep practicing your spells, boy, I'll be here for quite a while.” Starswirl said and I just had to let out a groan.

“But I’ve done it twenty times, I’m ready for something new!” Clover exclaimed in an annoyed tune of voice, even snorting out of his nose to make his point.
[Is he your Apprentice of some sort?]
“Yes, he’s been studying under me for quite some time, he’s been a natural thus far… Although admittingly I've been slacking a bit since my discovery...” The old geezer said with blushed cheeks, obviously embarrassed. “Perhaps I should teach you the Rope Charmer spell, a spell that allows the user to manipulate a rope into lassoing and grabbing objects, it’s like the Levitate spell, but useful anything that need to be tied up.”

I can practical see the gleam in the young unicorns eyes, the will to learn and the urge to satisfy their thirst for knowledge. “Come on then, let’s go!”

“Actually, I think it would be better if we practice near Echo, keep him company.” Starswirl suggested, I would smile if I had a mouth or teeth, how I wish I had a body instead of being a pool of water.

As the days went by, Either Starswirl, Clover, or both would come to visit, either to talk to me or practice their spells, I do admit I was starting to grasp the concept and one day, I gave the two quite a shock.

Today’s lesson was teleportation and the young ward was having a lot of trouble casting the spell, I was starting to bored of their lesson, so I decided slowly and very quietly try one of the past spells that Starswirl taught his apprentice, I concentrated on twig branch that was just above Starswirl’s head.

“..Echo? Why are you glowing?” Starswirl asked, looking at me with interest, I ignored his question and continue to pour my energy into it.. Eventually, the branch broke in my newfound telekinetic grip, making it float around Starswirl’s head as if he was a planet and the branch was the sun, Clover chuckled and giggling at my antics..

“W-what.. Who? Echo!? You’re doing this? W-why, this is a break through!” Starswirl levitated a scroll out, an inkwell, and a feather, he started scribbling like mad and there had been a couple of times he had to stop or else the paper would of caught on fire.

“Oh, there he goes again.” Clover said with a chuckle, this was something Starswirl has done when a discover becomes even greater, he has to take notes on everything.

“Echo, try casting other spells!” Starswirl suggested, watching me in anticipation.

[That was my very first spell, I can try others except the teleportation spell, I’d… rather not see my whole form end up someone where]

Starswirl had a look of both disappointment, I know he was looking forward to seeing an entity cast magic and write down the makings of history, but he nodded in understanding a second later. “It’s quite an amazing fit.” He commented on. “As strange as it may sound, I think I have a second student, even if you lack a physical form, no offense

[None Taken, I’ve learned to get used to it, but I still desire the day I can have a body and to do the many things you unicorns can do.]

Starswirl went into a moment of silence as he pondered my words. “I do believe will become my next creation...” he said, stroking his beard.

The end of the day drew near and it was time for them to go, they waved their hoofs goodbye and off they went.
