Chapter 350: The Fateful PM

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Hello BonBon,

It is time we finally had this talk. I won’t mince words, I never approved of you, and still think that Lyra could have made a better choice in… partner. We both know how exceptional Lyra is and I know that in our separate ways both of us wanted what is best of her, even if that notion is vastly different for each of us.

I’m writing to tell you that she gave birth yesterday: a pair of healthy unicorn twins. There were complications, but thanks to the doctors and Princess Cadence (who personally came to oversee) both they and Lyra are doing well. It would have been nice for you to have been here to support her in that moment of need, but I understand why you weren’t. (Fleur has been a lifelong friend, so I know a thing or two. I guess I also have you to thank for the special treatment Lyra received, as well as I did a few months back.)

Looking at her I can only imagine the pain my daughter subjected herself to be able to have foals. I had all but given up when she told me of her preferences (and that she’d be moving out to live with you), but apparently she hadn’t. I still am not sure I understand or agree with her choice, but I accept it. After what she put herself through, she had proven she is fully capable of making her own choices regardless of what I think, and at the very least I could support her as any mother should.

I cannot promise things will change between us right away, or at all, but I am willing to be a try. And like Fleur likes to say “We could at least be civil”.

LyraHands

Thank you. I’ve always been terrified I wouldn’t be there with her when she gives birth… I’m glad you were. My greatest fear was that Lyra would give birth alone. I’m so glad that didn’t happen. And thank you for taking care of her since she moved to Canterlot. Did she hurt a lot?

Bob

Yes. Every night she’d cry herself to sleep while I sat beside her. Princess Cadence told me it was a side effect of the spell she had to endure. Something about the mana-drain affecting her brain chemistry. It didn’t make it any better knowing. Hopefully, now that the foals are born she’ll get back to normal.

She spoke a lot about you when she cried. A few times she eve mistook me for you. I didn’t correct her. It seems it was your idea for her to go to Canterlot. I am certain you’ve had a good reason to ask her even if it was a bit selfish on your part.

LyraHands

It was. But at least this way she and the foals are safe.

Can you describe the foals, please?

Bob

They are the most magnificent things I’ve seen. Their coats were glowing when they came out. Princess Cadence explained that was because of the spell and they should fade away with time, and still they were breathtaking.

Lyra refused to let us name them. She insisted that you must be back so that you could name them together. The filly glowed in a brilliant cyan, almost like Lyra’s own coat, yet a shade bluer. I can tell she’ll be strong as Lyra was. The colt has the features of a delicate flower, glowing a warm yellow. He was quiet, unlike his sister. He just opened his eyes for a moment, yawned and curled up again.

You should be proud of them. They are the best grandfoals I could have imagined.

LyraHands

I am. And I’m proud of Lyra. Thank you. I wish I could have been there for her. It’s the single best moment that I know will never be again, but I’m relieved she’s safe. In the end that’s all that matters… they are well.

Bob

Hopefully in time you’ll have a chance, when you yourself become a grandmare.

LyraHands

I know. That’s too far in the future for me to contemplate. I prefer to live in the here and now. Whatever the future hold swill come, regardless.

Bob

That’s something Fleur would say. Tell me, are we safe yet? I’ve been following the news and things seem to have calmed down, but can I be sure?

LyraHands

I don’t know. So many things are unclear. And that is why I ask you to keep Lyra there a bit longer. Knowing her she’d want to go back to Ponyville the moment she feels well. She mustn’t, not yet. When things are safe I’ll come and get her, but until then I don’t want to take any chances.

Bob

I will. Maybe it’s for the best. The doctors told me it might be days until Lyra is well enough to walk, possibly more. I think I can keep her here longer. Especially with the little ones being so fragile.

Do you have a mana catcher for the foal’s room back there? Lyra did a mess of things she was growing up. All “natural mages” do. My mother in law told me that Lyra’s father also had exceptionally violent magic outbursts.

LyraHands

I modified some spell disruptors, we should be fine. Princess Cadence already went through this with me. The entire room is made to withstand wild magic, and reinforced incase the foals start smashing things against the walls.

Bob

Which will happen, let me assure you. Lyra was determined to “make a new entrance” to the kitchen at one point. She failed, but not by much.

LyraHands

I imagine :)

Sorry, but I must go now. I’m still at work and… there are things I need to check on. Thank you for the message. It means a lot.

Bob

I am glad we go to talk as well. I won’t keep you any longer. The next time you receive a message it will be Lyra writing.

LyraHands

Thank you. Please tell Lyra I love her and I’m always thinking about her.

Bob

I will.
