How did rainbow dash become awesome? She learned from the best.
More then a few of our philosophical bronies have asked themselves "How did Rainbow Dash get so awesome?" The answer? She learned from the best.

“Hey Fluttershy. Thanks for inviting me over for some tea. I guess..” Rainbow Dash said, examining her porcelain teacup with a tentative glare. “But I don’t like tea all that much.”
The duo sat out behind Fluttershy's cottage, taking the moment to enjoy the calm weather. Well, Fluttershy was anyway, Rainbow was twitching nervously in her seat. Unable to focus as the urge to fly started to overwhelm her.
“It’s okay Rainbow," Fluttershy said with a nod. "I just noticed that you seemed to have something on your mind earlier today after your talk with Lyra. I just wanted to ask you if you wanted to talk about what you had on your mind, not that you have to of course, if you don’t want to that’s fine.” Fluttershy responded, her voice growing softer and softer as she spoke.
“Nah it’s okay. It’s just... You know how she keeps talking about those weird two-legged creatures? ‘Humans’ I think she calls them.” Dash said as she looked to the sky. Her nervous twitches fading away as she fell back into her memories. “I think I knew one when I was a filly. At least, I think he was. He certainly was more cool then Lyra says though.”
“Oh really? What was that like, knowing somebody from a different race?” The cream-colored pegasus asked, her voice low.
“Well....” Rainbow answered, as she started a narrative of a trip down memory lane.
A small multichromatic filly wandered through the forest, far below her normal home on the clouds. She was scared of the surrounding forest and to make it worse her wing was sprained, leaving her to wander helplessly under the canopy of the Everfree. Suddenly she heard a crash from a nearby bush and turned around to see a timber wolf bearing down on her. The creature slowly approached but was blocked suddenly as a different creature took a stance between it and the small pegasus.
The timber wolf growled at the being and slowly began to circle around it’s new target. “Hey hey hey hey hey! WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM YOU WALKING TREE TRUNK!?” The being suddenly cried as it began to unsheathe it’s incredibly long sword. The beast responded with a series of barks, obviously asking for a fight. “The reputation of team Gurren echoes far and wide. When they talk about it’s badass leader, the man of indomitable spirit and masculinity, They’re talking about me! The mighty Kamina!”
The beast suddenly took to the air in a lunge, only to encounter the large sword cutting deep into it’s bark flesh in a flash. The beast flew backwards from the force behind the swing and landed on the rough ground as it’s new wound began to seep the odd-syrup blood of the creature onto the forest floor. It immediately stood from the ground and took off running deep into the forest, whining as it retreated with its tail between its legs.
For a while neither of the two talked, letting the silence of it fade into reality. Rainbow Dash was having none of that though. “So.. Awesome.." The filly said, her eyes glittering from the sheer amounts of badass as the man re sheathed his sword. "That was amazing! You’re amazing Kamina!”
“Tell me something I didn’t already know kid! The great Kamina is always there to save any who need him!.” The man said as he turned to face the small filly, an impossibly wide grin on his face.
“Do you think.. do you think I could learn to be as awesome as you?” The filly asked, hope rising in her voice.
“I don’t see why not. All beings, no matter the race, aspire to be as great as I, the epitome of manliness!”
“So.. you’ll teach me?” Rainbow Dash asked as she looked in awe at the man. He wore a cape-like adornment and a pair of triangular orange closes adorned his face. His sheathed sword resting over his shoulder as he posed. On the back of the cape was what could resemble a flag. it held a skull that wore a pair of similar triangular shades, though in black, and fire tore through the air behind the macabre head.
“Of course I will. The great Kamina would never reject a challenge such as the likes of teaching you the secrets of my amazingness.”
“Wow...” Rainbow dash said, complete amazement covering her features. As the man struck another pose to display the corded muscle of his six pack.
"First Lesson! TALK LOUD AND POWERFULLY!"
“S-so then what happened?” Fluttershy asked, finding herself drawn into the story.
“So he taught me the secrets to being awesome. It took a lot of training but eventually I learned. It was a long training session in that forest every night. But it was totally worth it.” Rainbow Dash said, her eyes shining in reminiscence.
“So what happened? I- I mean, I never see you talking to him.”
“Well, you remember that day when I raced those bullies? The day I got my cutie mark?” Fluttershy nodded. “The day before that I told him about the mythical Sonic Rainboom and do you know what he told me?”
“What?”
“He told me ‘YOUR SONIC RAINBOOM WILL BE THE SONIC RAINBOOM THAT PIERCES THE HEAVENS!’” Fluttershy looked on, enraptured by the story being told by her cyan friend. “Yea, I don’t like to tell ponies but he was the reason I completed that Sonic Rainboom, I was so close to stopping when that cone of pressure started to form around me. I was sure that there was no logical way I could pull it off, but then I heard his voice in my head.”
“What was it saying?”
"Don't believe in yourself, Rainbow Dash. Believe in me. Believe in the Kamina who believes in you!"
“Wow, he was rather rough wasn’t he?”
“Yeah a little, but he was still the coolest living creature I ever saw.”
“So.. what happened to him?”
“Ah yea, I went back to that forest that night to try and find him but I couldn't find him anywhere.”
“Oh my, do you think he might have come across some trouble?”
“Probably.”
“You don't suppose he might have.." Fluttershy gulped. "d-died do you?”
“Nah, he can't die." Rainbow said with a grin as she pulled a pair of blue triangular shades from under the table and placed them on her muzzle. "He just leaves to be awesome elsewhere.”
GIGA BREAKER!
"Rainbow Dash! Rainbow Dash! Wake up!" Came a scream from below the cloud that the blue pegasus was sleeping on. She groggily rolled over and looked over the edge of the fluffy impromptu bed and spotted a young orange pegasus below her.
"Hey kid, what's the matter?" Rainbow Dash said as she stood from the cloud and started to stretch.
"An ursa major is heading towards town! It looks like it's going to destroy it!" The filly cried out. Rainbow's blood ran cold at the mention of it but she put a brave face on. "You sure it's an actual ursa major this time? Because if I have to waste time dealing with just an ursa minor..." The mare let the sentence hang as she dropped to the ground.
"It's definitely an ursa major!" The filly shouted excitedly, though she was only a few feet away from the rainbow-maned pegasus. "It was huge!"
"Have you told anyone else yet?" The mare asked, the filly responded by shaking her head. "I want you to go tell Twilight and the others to meet me at the edge of town where the ursa major is approaching from." The filly nodded and was about to run to do that when she was interrupted by Rainbow. "And make sure you get the town evacuated. I don't want anyone to get hurt if I have to judo toss this bear."
The filly nodded once again excitedly before taking off towards the town, Rainbow swallowed a rising knot in her throat and took to the air once again.
Moments later the town was empty of civilians and Rainbow found herself standing at the outskirts of the town with her friends. More then one of whom looked pissed. "Rainbow!" Shouted Twilight. "We need to get out of here!"
"I'm not going to just let this beast destroy MY town." Rainbow said with a glare at Twilight, "We're going to make sure it never even gets to Ponyville."
Twilight was about to start a reply when a crunching noise from the forest informed the group that the bear had arrived. The beast bent the trees that marked the edge of the forest and revealed the utterly destroyed path of snapped trees that it had left in its path.
"Alright." Rainbow Dash said as she took off into the air and out of sight of her friends. "Let's do this!"
Before she could start her dive however a loud voice filled the immediate area and made her freeze solid. "Hey hey hey hey hey! You've got nerve attacking my favorite town!" Fluttershy looked to where her friend floated, frozen stiff in mid air as her wings continued their instinctual rhythm. Following the noise Fluttershy looked into the depths of the forest and caught a reflection among the trees off to one side. From within the shadow of the intact trees an odd biped emerged. He wore a long cape that looked like a repurposed flag as well as a large triangular pair of orange glasses.
"Is it.. him?" Fluttershy said, quiet enough that none of her friends heard her. All of them were looking at the ursa major that had stopped at the sound of the voice.
"I'm about to tell you something important so you had better clean the wax out of those huge ears of yours and pay attention!" The man shouted as he brought his blade out of its sheathe. "After leaving his hometown he never looks back, not even when he ends up in a strange world! He looks forward! He's manly, he's awesome! He's the mighty Kamina!" At this the man broke into a run and jumped through the air to swing his massive sword across the ursa's hide.
The beast let out a cry of pain at the small wound before turning around with surprising speed and knocking its attacker away and toward the ponies. The man hit the ground next to the ponies and slid for a foot or two before standing up, completely unharmed, and prepared to attack the creature.
"Kamina!" Rainbow cried out as she landed next to him.
"Hmm?" The man said as he pushed his miraculously-still-attached glasses up his nose slightly. "Ah, Rainbow! I saw that you pierced the heavens and few years ago. Congrats!" The man shouted as he brought his sword up alongside him. "I would shake your hand err.. hoof, but I'm busy teaching this fuzzball some manners."
Twilight decided that now was a good time to interrupt the conversation. "I have no idea who you are or why you know Rainbow, but there is no way you can beat an ursa major. They have excellent, innate, regenerative abilities and they have the speed of something half their size."
"Really? I think it may take both of us to take it down then Rainbow Dash. You're going to have to do that technique."
"You don't mean.."
"Oh but I do."
"Oh yes!" Rainbow said excitedly as she retrieved a pair of blue triangular shades from a small pouch under one of her wings and placed them on her muzzle.
"What are you talking about!" Twilight shouted at the two.
"The Rainbow Drill!" Rainbow exclaimed excitedly.
"The what?"
"I go into a tight corkscrew right before I perform my Sonic Rainboom and the energy gathers around me instead of being released into the sky." Rainbow explained as she started stretching her wings.
"But that's impossible, energy just doesn't work that way." Twilight responded with a glare, causing Rainbow to pause for a minute. Unsure.
"Listen to me Rainbow." Kamina said as he grabbed her attention once more. "Kick logic out and do the impossible. That's the Team Gurren way." Rainbow nodded and took off into the sky. "Right, now we just need to make sure the monster doesn't move so that Rainbow will hit it." Kamina said nonchalantly.
"And how do you plan on doing that?" Twilight deadpanned, the rest of her friends stunned silent. Well, except Pinkie, she pulled the party cannon out of her null zone where she kept it.
The man turned once again to face the monster that was about to start moving again, having licked its wounded forepaw clean of blood. "Hey Fuzzball! WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!?" The man said as he started off towards the beast with his blade ready once again. As he approached the beast the man was knocked sideways once again by the ridiculous speed of the swipe.
Kamina smashed into a set of trees a fair distance away and sat there among the slivers of the shattered wood, the monster was about to take another step when it was blinded by a wave of confetti hitting it in the face and it paused to wipe the offending pieces of paper from its eyes before looking back at the pink earth pony who had done it. It was once again about to attack her when a quiet, deadly voice caught its attention from behind. "Don't... ignore me.. you fuzzball." The man said as he stood from the wreckage around him. "Paws off my beloved student's town." He said as he dashed toward the creature.
The ursa swung once again but missed as the man jumped high over the massive paw and cut a line into the monster's wrist. It let out a screech of pain and swung again only to give the man another wrist to cut. The creature stood on its hind paws and was about to bring all its wrath upon the biped below it when a cry caught it's attention. The beast dropped to all four paws and turned around to see a wave of color shooting across the sky. The beast tilted it's head in confusion when the colors then started to curl and move around a single point, creating ridges as it did so.
"Finishing Move: GIGA RAINBOW BREAKER!" Came the feminine shout as the multichromatic drill dug into beast. The monster cried out in pain as it fought with the incessant force of the solidified energy. For a moment nothing happened, then, without warning, the beast vanished in a collection of black smoke and disappeared along with the momentum of the drill. Instinctively Kamina lunged forward to catch the falling Rainbow Dash.
Meanwhile Twilight looked on in awe. "Rainbow just defeated an ursa major..."
