Can You Run Forever?
Chapter 13: Chapter 12: Freedom Of Death
Previous ChapterThere it was, the impossible. Sunset was facing the only one she never ever expected. The pony version of Flash Sentry was choking the very life out of her. What was he doing here? Why was he doing this? Sunset had been told through Twilight’s old messages on how he was such a loyal and courageous soldier. Was he blindly serving what was once Twilight, or had the Queen turned him forcibly to her side? What happened to him?
He looked so different. His fur was darkened and twisted, covered in redden scars and darkened flesh. His mane was longer, trashed and partially shredded. His eyes were as black as the darkest night. Almost like they were soulless. His armor, a black with darker gold lines along the edges. The blue tinge in his tunic that had been the most prominent about him was now a maroon red in color. His wings were nearly twice as big as a normal pegasus, yet they were tattered and torn, seemingly impossible for flight despite landing perfectly from the sky. And of course, the greatest change was the seemingly cybernetic right arm.
Finally, his name was no different. He called himself the Void. As in nothingness, complete emptiness, just like his eyes.
Sunset struggled and struggled until her red geode and the right half yellow gem glowed brightly as her arm touched his flesh. She was showed what lied within his mind and his past. She saw pain, sorrow, and torture. All of it. How he was there in the vision she had of Ponyville, how he saw her, how he struggled against the evils that had destroyed Ponyville, how he suffered under the vicious torture of the Queen. All of it.
Suddenly she was dropped to the ground as Sonata chopped off the Void’s cybernetic arm with a sharp metal pipe. Aria jumped over and kicked at his head so hard that as he crashed near his arm, the sound of bones cracking could be heard.
Adagio ran over and caught Sunset as she fell. “Sunset snap out of it.”
Upon getting a good slap from Adagio, Sunset waved her head back and forth as the gem began to stop glowing. “What happened?”
“Some pegasus tried to kill you.”
“What?!”
“Well, at least he’s dead now.” Adagio helped Sunset up as Sunset tried to catch her breath.
“No, you don’t understand. I saw all the torture he went through. All the pain he suffered.” Sunset grabbed tightly to Adagio as they walked over to the dead body. Sunset was frantic upon her movement as she spoke, “She killed him over and over. And every time she resurrected him.”
Suddenly strange looking maroon red magic shot outward from his body in all direction. They all looked around as the magic cleared. He seemingly disappeared in a flash of light that seemed separate from the other strange magic. “Where did he go--” Sonata was stopped as blood poured from her mouth. They looked in horror as the Void's cybernetic arm; now reattached was now ripping through the back of her stomach out through the front.
“Sonata!!” They all screamed as she was lifted into the air. She struggled more and more as the metal arm partially shredded her insides. Aria kicked his head again, snapping the neck. Yet not once did he fall, instead, he raised his other arm up to Sonata’s neck and with one swift pull, he ripped out her spine, killing her. He then tossed the body and spine aside like they were trash.
“No! I'll kill you!!” Aria shouted as she pulled out her braced knuckle dusters and unleashed a fury of punches.
The Void just grabbed his head and snapped it back in place. He turned and continued to take Aria’s hits like they weren’t even there. She continued to hit even harder and harder. Finally, the Void grabbed her arm and pulled at it while placing his cybernetic arm on her shoulder. She tried to struggle as she punched at him with her free hand. He pulled harder and harder, then the sound of flesh ripping filled the air followed by Aria screaming in agony as her arm had been completely ripped right off. the Void followed this with a punch in her gut so hard that she fell to the ground and began puking profusely. However, he was not done as he stomped on her back while she was down. He stomped her into the ground over and over until her spinal cord finally shattered from the pressure.
Sunset and Adagio looked in shock upon all of this as their friends fell so easily. This was terrifying. This couldn’t be happening. The Void looked toward them and charge in at high speed. They both knew what he was going to do at this speed and he was heading right toward Sunset. Without even thinking, Adagio jumped in the way and took the attack through the chest.
Adagio and Sunset looked in shock at each other. Sunset tried to grab her but Adagio pulled her lips in for a kiss. Then before Sunset could even process it Adagio said her last words, “Sunset I still love you.” Adagio jumped into the road with the Void as an eighteen wheeler passed by and hit them head on.
All went silent upon them leaving. Sunset was in complete shock. When did Adagio develop feelings for her? Why would she tell her now? Sunset fell to the ground as the silence was finally broke by her tears.
Suddenly an explosion sent shock waves in all direction as the eighteen wheeler crashed into a gas station. This shook Sunset from the ground as she rose up and looked in the direction of the crash. She covered her mouth as people ran out of the flames screaming before the fires consumed them. Yet some actually survived as they ran toward Sunset’s direction. Instantly they were all cut down as a magical laser tore through hundreds of yards as it circled around. Sunset had only seconds to duck before the beam nearly took her head off. Bodies fell, buildings fell, everything that circled a few hundred yards around the gas station fell.
“That was too much magic.” Sunset looked in shocked. The Void stepped out of the flames seemingly unharmed. He ran toward Sunset and she tried to run from there. She had to get some help but from where?
“Get down!!” Sunset's eyes widened in confusion at that voice. She saw the Red Biker charging right at her on her motorcycle with a machine gun in her hand. Sunset jumped down as the girl pulled the trigger and unleashed a fury of bullets into the Void just before he could grab Sunset. The Red Biker drove up and stopped in front of Sunset. “Get on, if you want to live.”
Not arguing with her she climbed on to the motorcycle. The Red Biker took a small moment and looked to the bodies of Sonata and Aria, then looked toward the flames that had consumed Adagio and closed her eyes and looked away. Once Sunset was on the two drove off.
Sunset held on as best as she could. She tried to question why this random biker saved her. She had no idea that this same biker had been following her for so many months, or who she really was “Why are you helping me?”
The Red Biker looked at her strangely. “You haven’t figured it out have you?” She drove faster and faster. Soon the Void caught up with them. The Red Biker swerved to dodge the lasers he was shooting from his hand.
“How is he doing that? That much magic would take a massive toll on the body of a normal pegasus.” Sunset was so confused. “No living creature could take that much pain.”
“Well, he isn’t exactly alive. Though I suspect the Queen resurrects him the same way the FIne Gentleman did once with me.”
Sunset looked with even greater confusion at the biker. “Who are you? Tell me now?”
“Well, I guess there is no more point in hiding it. It’s good to finally meet you properly in person, or do you prefer pony?” On that, the Red Biker lifted her visor for but a moment to revealing her face. Sunset looked in shock as it was herself, or should be said it was the human Sunset. “I have been following you ever since the Fine Gentleman resurrected me nearly a year ago.”
“Nearly a year ago. So you're Adagio's ally.”
The human Sunset looked at her strangely, “So that was what my ex told you.”
Sunset’s eyes widened at those words. “Adagio was dating you. I’m sorry.” She tried to hide the sorrow on her face. “So that was what she was trying to tell me.”
“What do you mean?” the human Sunset trembled as she drove.
“She still loved you in the end.”
This angered the human Sunset. She lifted the front wheel slightly and drove off even faster. “Damn it.”
Suddenly Sunset got an idea. “Hold on he is using magic….. Drive to the college now!”
Not sure what Sunset had planned her human counterpart didn’t argue and drove straight to the school as fast as they could. Soon they arrived at the college just as the alarms went off from the magic the Void was sending off.
As they enter the ground of the school, the shield went up and block the Void out. They did it, or so they thought. Just as they got to the door a cracking sound could be heard. They turned toward the sound only to look in shock as the Void was ripping a hole in the shield.
The human Sunset looked toward her pony counterpart as she took off her helmet. “Go, I will hold him off.” She pulled out more ammo for her machine gun. “Sunset go!”
Not arguing with her she ran inside the building. However as she ran she began noticing something was very strange, She ran through the place over and over again. She couldn’t figure it out, but something in her gut was telling complete illusion. All the teachers and attendants had completely forgettable faces. Just what was going on here?
Suddenly human Sunset’s scream filled the air. Pony Sunset ran toward the direction of her counterpart’s scream when without warning the Void tore through the building and charged right at her with full rage.
He grabbed her by the throat and punched her through a glass wall. He pinned her to the ground. He let go of her throat and grabbed a large shard of glass. Sunset saw the shard heading right to her chest and barely had enough time to stop it mere inches from her heart as she used her own hands to braced the shard as it stabbed through one of her hands. The shard of glass was hovering just over the right half gem necklace as the blood from her hand poured on to it.
The Void pushed the shard closer to Sunset’s heart with each passing second. As it went closer Sunset’s mind raced. Was this the end for her? Why did she have to die here? Why couldn't she just die in that bar?
Suddenly she saw her reflection in the glass shard. What was she thinking? Why would she want death after how many had died for her to get here? Had she really fallen that far? She used to care for all, but ever since these visions had started she had become selfish. Worrying only about herself. That was why she kept losing. That was why she didn’t notice the evils of this college sooner. That was why all of this was happening. Because of her. She needed to stop running. She needed to truly grow once more. And this time do better.
On that final thought both halfs of the gem began to glow, but this time it wasn’t for a vision. It was for something much greater. The doorway between both worlds opened inside Sunset and wings sprouted outward. She launched the Void through several walls in an instant.
She saw the great power she used and looked in confusion. That is until she saw her reflection in the glass shards around her. Her horn was back and she now had wings, alicorn wings!
“This is incredible. When did I ascend?” It was at that moment Sunset realized in all of her visions she had survived things that would normally kill ordinary ponies. But of course, she was no ordinary pony, for she had ascended long ago.
Sunset jumped out the way as the Void shot another laser outward, carving a major hole in the college building.
“Not done yet are we Flash?” Sunset looked right at him. “Fine let’s end this.” On that, she charged right at him. She was ready now to fight for the win. She was ready to fight for all that had fallen. She was ready to fight to the very end.

Down below the college, the Fine Gentleman sat in his chair as the building shook above him. “That’s it. Just bring her a little closer.”

As all of that was going on, Flash arrived at the bar......
