Chapter 1: Bonus points for reading the title upside down

Twilight Sparkle was a simple alicorn, if simple can be relative to the other five alicorns. She wanted to read a few books and cuddle underneath her blanket as a mild, but still substantial, snowstorm blew through Ponyville. She would have liked to have Starlight and Spike with her, but those two had already gone to Canterlot to see some of Spike’s old friends and checking up on Moondancer for Twilight.

Truth be told, while she was supportive of two of the most important ponies (er, ponies and dragon) in her life, Twilight was getting a bit suspicious to Starlight and Spike hanging out with each other more often. Didn’t help that Rarity was the one that first voiced these suspicions. But then again, it was Rarity; she probably was being a little dramatic about the two friends.

If one could call a declaration of silent war for stealing “her” dragon only a little dramatic.

So, with the other occupants of the castle gone, this left only Twilight in her room, cuddled by her blanket and reading a book in her bed. The book was a romance fiction novel, but it wasn’t a raunchy one like some of the others that she kept in a secure and locked place. The novel’s cover page and the summary promised a romance story that was more based on the journey and how each of the lovers lives played around them, instead of shutting off the world and only focusing on the two ponies like most other novels. A bit of an interesting take on the genre, but the more Twilight read, the more realistic and alive the characters felt in the story. She mentally noted to send a letter to the author asking for a few tips for some of her own writings later on.

Before she could start another chapter, which was coming onto a cliffhanger in the last chapter when a family friend of one of the lovers dropped a bombshell about their past, her cell phone rumbled and beeped for one second.

Cell phones were an interesting invention for Equestria. A portable camera, the ability to talk and instant text message any being across Equestria (and even beyond, if you payed the fees), and the ability to blow a hole in a wall using the phone’s battery. Twilight found out that last function when she wanted to see how much magic she could use to manually charge her phone, instead of just putting the charger in it.

Needless to say, one of Applejack’s barns is now made of new wood, and has a new coat of paint over it.

The specific tri-tone chord told Twilight that this was Rainbow Dash texting her. Her friends didn’t believe that using different chords for each of her friends’ messages would instantly let Twilight know who texted her, but now she knew each notification ringtone by heart.

She quickly opened up her phone and looked at the text message.

For a few, and utterly brief moments in time, Twilight Sparkle’s body froze. Technically, this counted as her dying, but that wasn’t what was on her mind. Rather, what was on her mind was the contents of the message.

While Twilight may have been in the middle of her friends in terms of sociability mainly because of some habits of her former life of being a shut-in, she knew a few things about the new culture of cell phones and the things that ponies did with text messages nowadays. Honestly, she wasn’t so surprised that Rainbow Dash was being this… forward, and she hadn’t realized that Rainbow actually saw her that way.

But…

That didn’t stop Twilight from heavily blushing and recoiling in shock, almost dropping her magic and her phone in the process. She never saw Rainbow that way either, so the thought of them sending… those to each other made her almost retch out of sheer awkwardness.

The phone shut off itself after a few seconds of inactivity, where Twilight only stared at the message, not even daring to move a muscle. When it had shut off, she released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Taking a couple deep breaths to get her lungs moving again, she turned the phone on and began to think about what to send back to Rainbow.

“I mean, I can’t just say ‘what?’ or she might just ask again… or was this not supposed to be for me? Maybe it’s for another pony?” Twilight mused aloud. “I mean, if it is for another pony, then maybe I can just say ‘wrong pony’. Wait, but that would imply that I know she’s dating somepony, and if she hasn’t told anypony yet, then maybe she’ll freak out that I found out! Or what if this is a prank? Should I say ‘nice prank’? Augh, but maybe she’s sincere, in her way, and if I don’t take her seriously it might make her sad! But what about-”

A loud series of knocks on the nearby window interrupted Twilight’s musings, and the alicorn stood up and quickly went to it, seeing if it could perhaps be Rainbow trying to explain.

Rainbow was indeed outside, and Twilight opened the window for a brief second to let the cyan Pegasus in before closing it against the blizzard. The future wonderbolt shivered for a brief second before fanning her wings and grabbing a nearby blanket to dry herself off.

Twilight let out a small groan. That was her favorite blanket.

“Twilight!” Rainbow yelled at the alicorn. “Look, that text I sent you… uh, don’t read it, okay? Just ignore it, and give me the phone so I can, uh, delete it!”

“Rainbow… I… I already read it…” Twilight all but muttered quietly. Usually most ponies wouldn’t have heard a voice that awkward and shy, but years of being with Fluttershy helped to fine tune Rainbow’s hearing.

“Oh, so uh… you did…” Rainbow shook the back of her neck. “Look Twilight, that wasn’t for you, okay? I don’t, uh, swing that way, but that doesn’t mean you do, I mean, I don’t mean that you do, I mean, I’m not assuming you do or anything-”

“Rainbow?” Twilight spoke up. “It’s fine. I’m not… don’t worry about it, okay? No hard feelings, right?”

“Right! No hard, uh, feelings. I just, like, sent it to the wrong pony…” Rainbow’s eyes went wide at the accidental slip that it was meant for somepony else.

“Aw, Rainbow!” Twilight cooed, easily putting the first conversation away to focus on the new one. “How come you haven’t told us you’re dating somepony? Or someone, I’m not going to judge. Back in Canterlot, I saw plenty of in-”

“It’s because I’m not really sure about it working, okay?” Rainbow snapped, slightly scaring Twilight and making her flinch back. “Think of it this way: I’m awesome, alright, but this guy is a couple leagues above me. You ever felt like you were reaching for something that was so far away and yet actually still had a chance?”

Twilight raised her eyebrows. “Plenty of times, Rainbow. Some of the villains we’ve defeated would have easily beat us if we didn’t stand strong against them.”

“Ugh, just,” Rainbow ran her hooves over her face, “Just don’t tell anypony, okay? About the text and the fact I’m… you know…”

“My lips are sealed. Although, I’d say you stay away from Applejack, just to make sure she doesn’t try to pry in. Or realize you’re hiding something, you know she has a knack for those things.”

“Heh, heh, yeah… I’ll uh… I’ll just go, I guess…” Rainbow took a look outside the window to see the blizzard now blasting stronger than before. She had flown through bad weather before, but she never liked to anyway.

“You can stay here, if you want. Take one of the guest rooms and wait the storm out for a while.” Twilight went to her room’s exit and pointed out down the hall where Rainbow needed to go. “Just yell if you need me. There’s some snacks in the kitchen fridge, you know where that is.”

“Alright, thanks Twilight! See ya later!” Rainbow waved goodbye before hovering away from the alicorn. Twilight, after making sure Rainbow did in fact go down the hallway and not wander off to sections of the castle that she could possibly get lost in, went back to her blankets, sighing as she took the now wet blanket away and grabbed a new one in its place.

Before she could get comfortable, she picked up her phone and turned it on again, going through her messages to find the texts from Rainbow. Trying not to look at the offending message again and moving her hooves only by memory to delete the text, she relaxed to see it gone from her text messages.

Before she turned off her phone, however, she saw a notification pop up at the top of the screen. “NEW CANTERLOT KNIGHTS WIN AGAINST TROTTINGHAM MINERS.”

“Yes! We’re going to the cup!” Twilight quietly cheered.

Rainbow, having a little stash of goodies she ‘borrowed’ from the fridge, sat down on the guest bed in her temporary room. She planned on watching something from Hooflix on her phone (unlimited data courtesy of the wonderbolts, aw yeah!) until the storm blew over. The device was charged before she left quickly for Twilight’s, so she still had plenty of battery power left.

Before she would do any of that, she wanted to check in on her favorite stallion, just as she was trying to do before she accidentally texted Twilight. Turning on her phone, she went through the messages tab (making particular note to watch the names of each conversation) and clicked on the number and name that she had been texting for a while now, if the ‘314 texts’ were any indication.

“Hey, Sexy Armor~ Send some nudes for the night? :p”
