A more likely guess would be that they were sent to some point in the past or future, which would explain why new representatives for the Elements were never found.

As a result, peace was purged from the surface of Equestria. Murders rampant, weapons of mass destruction were used when other options were available. Technology only advanced, and the morality of ponies grew weaker. Until it finally came to a major rebellion force rising up.
