Chapter 2: Ways not to go crazy while traveling alone

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

As I waked from my dreamless sleep I became aware of the mats of fur and dried blood. So a wadded part way into the stream and used one of the smooth, wet stones at the bottom to wash. There was no pony around to see so I didn't worry about the indecent exposure.
after exiting the river I shook off the water droplets sit clinging on my fur. Then smoothed out the rustled patches. My limp wing still hurt like Tartarus but I choose to ignore the pain. Instead I tried to think of ways to keep me from going mad with boredom.
the bottom of the ravine wasn't what you'd call spectacular. Just dull grey lifeless rock as far as the eye can see. When I looked above me the sliver of sky I could see was equally gray and lifeless. The only entertainment here would be what I could do myself.
I started to experiment with my voice. Bending it from bass to flashetto to bass again. Then a tune catchy but annoying popped into my head. First I hummed it then when I thought of words to it I began to sing it.

“99 buckets of oats on the wall 99 buckets oats take one down pass it aroung 98 buckets of oats on the wall. 98 buckets of oats on the wall 98 buckets of oats. take one down let it turn brown 97 buckets of oats on the wall.”

I when got through about 76 buckets of oats when something stopped me. The sky must have been angry with me, because a bolt of lightning ripped across the sky and chaired the ground in front of me. The raw power of this bolt sparked my interest. A static change, so subtle i didn’t notice it, ran across my horn and increased in power until it broke lose.

Did that come from me? I though. Then wondering at this new power a focused on firing a bolt. When I felt sufficiently charged up I let a bolt loose. I smiled and hopped over to the char mark I made.

If I can do that what else can I do? I then turned to the river and focus on one of the smooth stones. A fiery white glow enveloped it and it began to rise. “Haha!” suddenly I noticed my horn was also enveloped in this aura. “Whoa!” I immediately dropped the stone and reached up with my hoof to feel it. It felt a little warm but not burning hot.

I gave a wide grin. then I noticed the orange glow again. It’s so far off. I looked to my limp wing. I wish I could fly. Then I would be able to arrive there and have some pony to talk to A gave an audible sigh. then desperately tried to flap up but careened into the cayon wall. I tried that several times before admitting defeat. It was still going to be a long road ahead. So I begain to sign again

"99 buckets of oats on the wall 99 buckets of oats! Take one sown pass it around 98 buckets of oats on the wall 98 buckets of oats on the wall 98 buckets of oats take one down pass it around 97 buckets of oats on the wall 97 buckets of oats on the wall 97 buckets of oats take one down pass it around 96 buckets of oats on the wall!”
