Chapter 21: The Three Puppeteers (Part 3)

"It still doesn't make any sense!" Twilight Sparkle stood at the portal with her friends and frantically scratched her temples, messing up her hair as she did so. "Those three boys won over the whole school in seconds, and I'm not seeing any Yo-kai energy around them or the students!"

"Indeed. I would've thought that there would've been Yo-kai all over the place, inspiriting the poor, helpless, and unprepared students of Canterlot High left, right, and centre." Whisper watched all of the students gush whenever the Puppet Brothers walked past. "Yet there were no Yo-kai that I could see in the vicinity, nor any inspiring flames around them or the students." He flew back over to Twilight. "Something is VERY wrong here in the human world. You might want to set your watch to EX mode right now just to be safe, Twilight."

"Whatever comes our way, we can probably flatten with our awesome new powers." Rainbow Dash leaned against the side of the portal and rubbed her own pendant. "Though, I don't know why you'd accuse the Puppet Brothers of this, Twilight. They're actually really nice guys."

"She's probably just jealous that we got to them first and that she didn't." Rarity flipped up a hand mirror and applied some blush to her face. "Happens to all of us, darling. Best to get over it and move on."

"Still, don't you find it a little bit odd that they just waltzed into Canterlot High and won everyone over immediately?" Sunset Shimmer turned to the girls and raised a brow. "I've been in this world long enough to know that even boys that look like that can't impress everyone. I originally had a hunch that it was another situation similar to that of the Dazzlings, but with these Yo-kai introduced to the mix, I'm starting to second-guess myself."

"Yo-kai?" Pinkie Pie blew a raspberry and tossed her hair back. "Sunset. Yo-kai are little creatures from that handheld game and TV cartoon. They don't actually exist."

"Yes they do, Pinkie Pie." Twilight flipped up the lens and showed her Jibanyan and Whisper together, who were both fighting over the spotlight, until they saw Pinkie looking at them. They both waved and blushed a little bit as they returned to Twilight's side. "They were introduced to Equestria recently, and I think that they're here in this world now too."

"Again, if I might add." Whisper raised his finger. "You know, after all of the chaos that they caused the last three times, I wouldn't be surprised if this world just accepted the existence of Yo-kai at this point. It would make things a lot easier to explain."

"But still, I'm just glad that Pony Twilight's got herself some new power too." Applejack showed off her jewel to Twilight. "Makes me feel less guilty about trying to tell her about these doodads."

"Huh?" Twilight leaned in and examined Applejack's geode, before going around to see the others. "I didn't notice those the last time I was here. Anything new happen while I was away?"

"Well, we went on a bus to a forest that shares the same name as the one you freed Whisper from the Crank-a-kai, met someone named Gloriosa, saw that she was using magic to save the camp but trap us all at the same time, defeated her with the very crystals that she was using, and then got to keep those little crystals as extra-powerful magical power boosters!" Pinkie Pie took a deep breath and gave Twilight a wide smile after her tirade. "Does that explain it?"

"So, these gems..." Twilight took an even closer look, noticing the Cutie Marks on each of them. "Are they like this world's version of the Elements of Harmony?"

"I guess so." Sunset brushed hers gently with the back of her hand.

"And while you got those little necklaces, you got that Yo-kai Watch." Fluttershy looked at Twilight's watch from all angles, noticing how she had fashioned the numbers on the inside of the dome so that it looked like a real watch. "I honestly can't tell which is better. A new form of magic to save our worlds, or a watch that allows you to talk with cute little creatures such as Jibanyan..." She took her own look through the lens and watched Jibanyan scratching his own back.

"Aww, stop it. You're making me blush." Jibanyan looked up at Fluttershy's wide smile. "No, seriously. You're gonna make me feel bad, nyan."

"Twilight? Can I speak with you for just a second?" Whisper gently tapped on Twilight's shoulders. "It's quite important."

"What is it, Whisper?" Twilight turned towards him.

"I'm detecting an incredibly powerful surge of energy from this portal." Whisper rubbed his hand gently on the sides of the giant stone block with glass on each side. "And not just from the portal itself, but rather somewhere else on it." He flew around it until he saw the crack on the top of the portal. "Ooh! Up here, Twilight! I'm definitely seeing something out of the ordinary."

Twilight jumped as high as she could to see what was going on, but she couldn't get a good view of the situation, regardless of how high she was jumping. She tried to grab onto the statue and pull herself up, but lost her grip, fell off, and landed on her butt.

"Do you need some help?" Fluttershy reached out towards Twilight.

"Please, girls." Twilight nodded and leapt again, but this time, she was being pushed up on top of the statue with the help of her friends. They all effortlessly carried her up to the top of the statue, where she was able to stand up. "Thank you."

Twilight immediately noticed the crack, and the rainbow-coloured lights emanating from it. She put her hand to her chin and slowly walked up to it, getting down on her knees as she looked into the crack.

"H-hey! Let me get a closer look too!" Whisper barged in and grinded his corporeal body against Twilight's head, looking into the crack along with her.

"What is this?" Twilight asked, seeing a kaleidoscope of lights of all different colours inside of the crack. They were all dancing around with each other, along with an excess of foreboding purple colour. "It looks like Equestrian magic, but there's something else there. Something... weird."

"Weird? Let me take a peek." Whisper gently pushed Twilight away and pushed himself deeper into the crack, to the point where his body was starting to slip through it entirely. His tail wiggled a bit before he popped out again, the area around his eye covered in rainbow-coloured paint. "Well, I did see something in there, but I'm not sure what."

"Whisper?" Twilight was barely able to contain herself as she puffed out her cheeks, suppressing her laughter as she looked at Whisper's eye. "You've got a little something on your face."

"Do I?" Whisper rubbed his eye with his hand, revealing the rainbow paint. "Huh. Guess I do. But more to the point, there's something in there intermixing with the Equestrian magic."

"Is there? Let me see." Sunset Shimmer climbed up the statue, with the rest of the Rainbooms following closely behind her. They all gathered around Sunset as she took her own little glance into the crack. "It is. That's Equestrian magic, alright, but there's something weird about it."

"Weird how?" Rainbow Dash asked, taking a look for herself. "Whoa! There's some sort of weird purple fire in there!"

"Fire and magic? Well that don't seem right in the slightest." Applejack crossed her arms as she looked at the crack for herself. "Something's wrong here, and considering the last few times magic got involved with this here world, that's saying somethin'."

"Let me examine this." Human Twilight re-adjusted her glasses and took a deeper look at the magic within the crack, as well as the other energy around it. The fires wobbled when Twilight got a look at it, and when she pressed her eye completely over the crack, the flames rose up at an incredible pace. "Get back!" She shouted, lurching her head back upright as a tiny pillar of purple flame rose up from the crack and died down shortly afterward.

"Now that's something you don't see every day." Whisper looked at the column of flame as it sunk back into the portal and continued to mix with the magic. "However, upon getting a clearer look at the fires, I can safely come to a conclusion on what's going on."

"What is it, Whisper?" Princess Twilight looked back at the crack one more time before looking at him. "What's going on?"

"It's quite simple, Twilight. The Equestrian magic is interlacing with that of Yo-kai energy." Whisper crossed his hands and hovered over the fires. "Not only has it opened the door for Yo-kai to run rampant in the human world once again, but it's also put this world in great risk."

"The king..." Twilight hung his head and looked back at the rest of the Rainbooms. "Do you think he could be coming here?"

"Huh? A king?" Everyone else simply looked at Twilight bug-eyed.

"Back in Equestria, there was this giant cat Yo-kai called Felycan." Twilight sighed and hung her head.

"As in a feline lycanthrope? That's really clever!" Pinkie chirped.

"Pinkie! Twilight doesn't feel very happy sharing this story with us." Rarity gently tapped Pinkie's chest and crawled over to Twilight. "Go on, dear. Explain the rest of this story."

"Felycan managed to turn everyone in Ponyville—even me and your pony counterparts—into cats. No minds, no traces of our old lives, just giant cat-ponies who only wanted to fondle yarn, chase laser pointers, scratch scratching posts, use litter boxes, the works." Twilight gently laid her hands out on the statue as she remembered the events in great detail. "When Jibanyan came to the rescue and saved us all, Felycan mentioned a name in her dying breath. Something about a king coming to destroy Equestria, and make me suffer."

"You don't think this Felycan mentioned an Equestrian king, do you?" Sunset asked.

"Impossible. Yo-kai don't rely on humans or ponies to do their bidding." Twilight looked up at Sunset. "Everything that Yo-kai do is entirely on them, and if this giant cat Yo-kai was taking orders from an even more powerful Yo-kai, it makes me wonder just how much at risk both of our worlds are."

"So what about this king? We'll just zap him with our magic like we do with every other bad guy who crosses us!" Rainbow Dash punched the air around her.

"Yo-kai are so far unaffected by any form of Equestrian magic, including that of the Magic of Friendship. There is no stopping them unless you have a Yo-kai Watch and some powerful Yo-kai friends." Twilight opened up her medallium and glanced at all of the friends she had made so far. "And right now, I only have twenty-seven Yo-kai Medals. That's not going to be enough to stand up to the king—especially when they're mostly E rank Yo-kai..."

"So what do we do now?" Human Twilight asked her pony self. "Just wait around for this king to come and conquer us?"

"No. Of course not!" Twilight shook her head. "We're going to fight back and save our worlds, of course, but right now, we're in dire straits, and these Puppet Brothers that just showed up aren't helping the situation at all."

"Do you think that they could be related to the king?" Fluttershy raised an eyebrow of her own.

"The Puppet Brothers? Ha! Impossible!" Rainbow Dash chuckled, laying her arm over Fluttershy's shoulders. "They're all great guys. If they were related to some evil king of darkness, then we would've known by now."

"Though, when you mentioned my name to them, they did seem a little less hospitable than they did at lunch today..." Human Twilight scratched her chin as she looked back at the Puppet Brothers, who were just now walking out of the school with an entourage of screaming fanboys and fangirls beside them. "Still, for someone of their caliber to be related to this king? I just don't see it yet."

"She does have a point, but I am detecting something incredibly powerful around them." Whisper pointed over to the brothers, seeing them enjoy their audience. "And it's much more visible than before, Twilight. You might want to take a look."

Twilight crawled quickly past her friends, taking a look at the Puppet Brothers with her eyes first. When it showed nothing, she took a look at them with the Yo-kai Watch's lens.

The Puppet Brothers all looked at each other with smiles on their faces, gave each other nods, and threw their arms skyward before crashing them back down around their bodies. As soon as they did, little inspiriting flames appeared around the Canterlot High students following them, and the pupils of their eyes were replaced with hypnotic swirls.

"Inspiriting flames?!" Twilight, gasped as she saw the Puppet Brothers inspiriting the students of Canterlot High.

"But there weren't any when we first took a glance!" Whisper looked at the crowd walking off with Sock, Mind, and String, completely unaware that they had been possessed by the three of them. "There weren'y any other Yo-kai around them making them popular, and there weren't any around the students either at lunch!

"Which can only mean..." Jibanyan scratched his chin.

"THE PUPPET BROTHERS ARE THE YO-KAI!" Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan all called out in perfect sync as they simply watched the Puppet Brothers leave their sight with their captive audience close behind them.
