Xavier Young is young man who lives a double life. For on the one hand, he is a man who lives to write fictional stories. Then on the other, he is a protector of spirits. He watches over spirits from a parallel world to Earth known as Fabalis. Fabalis is populated by animal spirits, which come up to Earth to relax. Xavier and his family line are the only ones who are able to see them, for they are gifted with a mark that appears on their hands. But this gift also comes with the responsibility, to help the Fables when the time comes.
Xavier lives alone with his Fable Cat friend, Flame, who has been with him since he was ten. His mother, his only known family, disappeared when he was eighteen years old. But before she disappeared, she had trained Xavier in combat and how to use his Fable powers, for which comes from the permanent mark on his hand, which began when he was thirteen. He still continues to train even after her disappearance. His only memory of her is her dog tags when she served in the United States Marines. Which he keeps around his neck, with his own dog tags his mother made for him when he was just ten.
But after two years of not seeing or hearing from his mother, he receives a package from her. Inside his a brown coat, a belt with twelve slots, a key, and a plane ticket to England. Inside also was a note from his mother, telling him about a magical portal in England. She also told him to come quickly. Now with this information, Xavier and Flame head out to England to find this portal. For Xavier it is a chance to find his mother.
He soon finds this portal in an ancient forest in England. Xavier soon learns that his ancestors created the portal centuries ago. Xavier, using his powers, activates the portal and he and Flame jump in. When they get out, Xavier finds himself in an old temple. Inside is a crimson blade locked with chains. With the key, he unlocks the blade and pulls it from the stone. With the blade in hand, they leave. But Flame and Xavier soon discover they are no longer on Earth. But in a strange world full of anthro creatures and fairy tales.
Now, Xavier must learn is true destiny. For his destiny might hold the fate of the entire race of Fables and the races of this new world. But will he be strong enough to fight the darkness that wishes to take over this world and Fabalis. Will he be able to find his mother and get the truth from her. Or will Xavier fall and be consumed by the darkness he has sworn to fight. Only she knows the truth...
