Through The Rift
Chapter 8: Tokyo Drift
Previous Chapter Next Chapter"I'm just trying to help you assholes!" I yell behind me as I take a sharp turn around a corner at speeds that would kill me if I crashed. A bullet flies past me, almost clipping my leg. A dull pain shoots through my shoulder as I think back to how I got shot a week ago. Good thing I was able to get that patched up, also that there was an English speaking doctor in Beijing.
"Matt! Go through there!" Rainbow points to an alley ahead of us at the end of the street. I rev the engine and speed up even more as we near the opening. The sports bike we had stolen was a hell of a speed demon. Too bad the guys we took it from weren't all that thrilled that we took their bike. I mean, I was gonna give it back! I just needed to get to the rift as quickly as possible! With another rift opening up in Paris yesterday, I was not about to take any chances. Time is a precious resource now, and it is not something we can just waste.
A van swerves out of nowhere from around the corner, blocking off the entrance to the alley. My eyes shoot open, and I quickly turn the handlebars to make the bike take an extremely sharp turn around the corner, almost crashing into the side of a giant building. The night sky shines down on us, but the street lights and headlights from other cars really help me to see where I'm going.
"Shit, that was close!" I yell back to Rainbow as we speed down the highway, going well over a hundred miles per hour. I just need to reach the main part of the city, and I should be able to close the rift and get the fuck out of Dodge. Good thing the government can practically whip up passports for me whenever I need to travel to a new country. Now what I don't understand is why I can't get a fucking military escort! United Nations can go suck a fat one if they think this is just some game.
"Matt! Bucking shoot them already!" Rainbow yells as she taps the side of my jeans. I had picked up a small, five-shot revolver from one of the guys who tried to stop us while stealing the bike. Why did I steal the bike instead of getting a taxi? Because... well... I'm broke to make a long story short, and with three rifts open, they were starting to cause some chaos back in the States. The rift over Jacksonville has actually grown slightly according to Alex, and there seem to be strange updrafts of wind constantly throughout the day, everyday. That can only mean one thing. So yeah, I stole a bike from some Japanese gang. I'm not proud of it, and I may be starting to regret it, but give me some slack!
"I'm not gonna shoot them Rainbow!"
"It's them or us! Eventually one of those bullets is going to hit either us or the tire. You don't have to kill them, just shoot their tires out or something!"
"Rainbow..." I mumble loudly, keeping my eyes on the road ahead of me. The two black vans behind us are surprisingly fast and are able to almost match my speed, though they do lag behind a bit.
"Matt!"
"Fine!" I pull out the revolver and pull back the hammer. I aim behind me, sparing a glance back before looking back at the road ahead of me. I keep repeating this process or aiming, driving, aiming, driving, for about twenty seconds before the sights of the gun are pointed at the front tire of one of the vans.
"Cover your ears!" I yell at Rainbow. Her ears droop against her head, and she shuts her eyes as hard as she can. I pull the trigger, and the gun explodes as my arm shoots up into the air from the recoil. Missed. I fire another shot, this time hitting my intended target. The bullet shreads the rubber on the front left tire of the van closest to us. The car spins around wildly before coming to a skidding stop. It doesn't proceed to follow us, as the van has crashed into the median of the road. I look behind me to see three men jump out of the car, yelling at us furiously. Good, I didn't kill them. That's one good thing to happen today.
"There's still one more!" Rainbow yells. This van is bigger, and there seems to be only two people in this one, and one has his own gun pointed right at us. I recognize the driver as the one who I stole this gun from. He had attacked us while I tried to hot wire the motorcycle. I had kicked him down, even though I was in the wrong. Then he had pulled the gun out on me, but I had kicked it out of his hands before he could even pull the trigger. Guess he had some friends nearby.
The man on the passenger's side leans out the window, aiming a pistol at us. I can't tell if he has it aimed at Rainbow, me, or the bike's tires. Even if he only hits the wheels, at this speed, we'd probably die just from falling off.
I hold the gun behind me, aiming the barrel in the general direction of the van. I fire off two shots, missing both times. One bullet left, gotta make it count. The man shoots at us a couple of times, missing us and the tires, but hitting the metal part of the bike a couple of times. One bullet hits the gas tank, and I shut my eyes closed, expecting it to blow up. Instead, nothing seemed to happen. I look down to see that the bullet hadn't exactly pierced a hole in the tank, but had instead ripped the side of it open, just barely missing the explosive liquid inside of it.
"Fuck off already!" I yell as I point back and fire my last bullet. It misses the front tires, but somehow takes out the back right one. They swerve the same way the first van did, and crash into the median once again. I'm about to cheer when I see the end of this long highway coming up ahead of us. I look down to see gas quickly pouring out of the bike. I turn the handlebars completely to the left, causing the bike to begin sliding sideways. The rubber on the wheels makes an obnoxious screeching sound against the pavement, and I can smell burning rubber. We quickly slow down from a hundred miles per hours to nothing in a matter of seconds, somehow managing not to fly off. We hop off the bike, and quickly run over to the side of the road to avoid getting run over by other cars.
We fall on our back in the grass just off the side of the highway near the exit that leads into the central part of Tokyo. We pant heavily as the adrenaline rushes through our veins.
"Well... that was fun." I say with a little chuckle, just happy to be alive, and also the fact that I hadn't killed anyone. "I can't believe you, Mrs. Anit-Violence, would tell me to shoot a gun at someone."
"I'm... not against... violence..." Rainbow says through heavy breaths. "I'm against killing. That wasn't killing."
"Whatever keeps you safe, I'll do it." I say with a smile as I quickly kiss her lips. She returns it, grunting happily as she presses up into me. I pull back a minute later, and look up at the night sky. The rift above us and to the left a bit, shines down on us, casting an eerie bluish-green light. I have to be directly under the rift for this to work, so we still have about a mile run back into the city before I can do anything about it. Unlike Shanghai, people aren't hiding from the rift. In fact, people seem to be going about their daily routines as if nothing had happened.
"Lets get going, we have a good mile or two before we reach the rift." I say as I stand up. I hold out a hand, and grab Rainbow hoof to help her stand. She gives me a confident smile before nodding. We sprint into the beautiful city that is Tokyo, Japan.
"We're... almost... there." I pant as we enter the city. Despite being in pretty good shape, running two miles down the side of a highway isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. Rainbow doesn't even seem close to being tired. Damn her pony endurance. I swear, it's like she has cheat codes for life that I can't use. Totally not fair.
We reach a large intersection where four roads meet. I run down the sidewalk on the north side, heading for the middle of the intersection where we will be directly under the rift. Citizens yell at us in Japanese, and even some English as I almost push them aside trying to get through the large crowd of people still out on the streets.
Rainbow and I run out into the intersection, and every car around us stops and starts honking. People even get out of their cars and start yelling at us to move. I slide to a stop and pull the cube out of my pocket, aiming it up at the sky. The cube lights up, and my body is covered in a blue aura of magic. I begin levitating up off the ground, and reach the point of about ten feet in the air. Lighting shoots out of the cube as I imagine the rift closing in my head. Wow, this magic stuff is actually pretty easy. Not sure why Twilight spent her whole life studying it if I can just pick it up in two week's time.
The lighting bolt once again separates into two different streams, each heading for the two ends of the rift. Once everyone sees this, they stop honking, yelling, and moving in general. I look around me to see everyone either gaping in disbelief, or recording this whole thing on their cell phones. By the end of all this, I'm going to be world famous because of people like this.
I look down to Rainbow below me, and give her a confident smile and a thumbs up. The rift closes above me, and I begin falling towards the street. This time, I know to expect it. My knees buckle under me as my legs hit the ground. I roll forward one or twice before coming to a stop on one knee. Now if something were to explode behind me, I would look so badass right now.
A warm mass presses up against my back, and I almost turn back and kiss who I expect to be Rainbow. Boy was I surprised to find a little Japanese girl hugging me around my back. Everyone around us starts cheering and rushing towards me. Soon an entire mob has formed around me with people cheering and hugging me. Good to see some people are still grateful for what I do. A mother soon comes and grabs the little girl off my back, and apologizes for letting her do that. I tell her it was no problem, thankful that she could speak English. Rainbow emerges from the crowd, and this time I get the kiss I was hoping for.
"So we're going home finally?" Rainbow says with a yawn as we sit in the busy airport. I look down at the two tickets in my hands. Two tickets to Los Angeles where we will catch a connecting flight back to Florida. I sigh and lean back with a smile.
"Yep, just gotta close that rift there, and we should be in the clear for a while. Maybe we'll take a little break while we're there to check in with Star. We can't stay too long though, still gotta close that rift in Paris."
"Ah man... Where's Paris Matt?" Rainbow asks as she looks up at me with a curious gaze.
"France. It's across the Atlantic Ocean, so the flight shouldn't be AS long as the one to Beijing." I say as I ruffle her mane. "Remember where I said Europe was?" Rainbow nods as she recalls the one time I tried to explain Earth's geography to her. All she really learned were the oceans and continents, but that seemed good enough for her. "Well, it's near the southern part of the continent, actually kind of close to Africa."
"Oh, I think I know where that is." Rainbow says as I watch her eyes. I can see the gears grinding in her head as she tries to recreate the map in her head. I scoot closer to her and wrap an arm around her shoulders. She nudges her head into my side and lets out a relieved sigh. "I can't wait to see Star again." She says quietly. A smile forms on my face as I think of the little filly. I feels like years since I've seen her. I hope she's okay with Emily.
We still have about two hours before our flight boards, so it doesn't surprise me when I feel Rainbow snoring next to me. I smile as I lightly brush my fingers through the feathers on her wings on her back. She lets out a little moan in her sleep, and a smile grows on her face as well. I feel my eyes becoming heavier as I lean my head on top of her's.
With her silky mane as a pillow, it doesn't take long for me to drift away into a dreamless, peaceful sleep.
