Through The Rift
Chapter 24: Unlikely Ally
Previous Chapter Next Chapter"Who's Trent?" I ask, now standing with Rainbow wrapped up in my arms.
"Some guy we found out down the path a ways. Shot in the gut but some guy, Alex and I watched it all go down." John explains. Mr. Brown comes from the same room that Fluttershy just came from, carrying a first-aid kit and a needle and thread. I guess he stitched the guy up or something.
"Shot!? By who?"
"I think you know him as Jack, or at least, that's what Alex here told me."
"J-Jack!?" Rainbow says, her head turning around to face everyone, and her ears perking straight up.
"Yup, saw it with my own two eyes. Pulled out a gun and shot this Trent guy right in the stomach." Alex says as he walks towards the room, waving for us to follow him. I carry Rainbow with me towards the room, not really knowing what I was going to see. Boy, did my blood start to boil when I say that emblem on the guy's jacket laying on the bed next to him.
"You son of a bitch!" I drop Rainbow by reflex, charging at the guy. The only thing that keeps me from beating his face in is John and Alex holding me back by my arms. "I ought to kill you!"
"Hey, you didn't say he was with that bucking gang!" Rainbow yells as she trots over to the guy's bed. This Trent guy just stares at us with a very confused expression.
"That's exactly why we didn't!" John says as he points a finger at me. "Because this would have happened."
"Hey, I'm sorry that I got mad that this fucker kidnapped my sister and daughter!" I yell in defense as John and Alex finally let me go.
"Daughter? Wait, you said they took your sister and RAINBOW'S daughter. Does that mean that... Oh my God..." John trails off. Welp, there goes my big mouth revealing secrets again. Great, just fucking great.
"Yeah, so what?" I say, slightly annoyed at his response.
"Dude, you screwed a horse?" He says as he places his hands on his head.
"HEY!" Rainbow yells angrily. "What does THAT mean?"
"I'm just saying! Its kinda weird!" John protests.
"Why? Because I'm not some pretty little human girl!? I'm not some animal you know!" Oh boy, this is really starting to go downhill now. I should probably break this up.
"Ladies, ladies, you're both pretty. Now, can we stop fighting and actually explain to me what the fuck is going on? Who's this Trent guy?" I ask as I get in between the two.
"You know I'm awake right?" Trent says, pushing himself up into a sitting position on the bed, which only causes him to grunt in what I'm assuming is pain.
"Tell me everything you know." I say as I approach him, my hand on the knife still in my pocket.
"Okay okay, about what!?"
"About my family!" I nearly whisper.
"They're holding them at the old warehouse about two miles from here, give or take. I don't know why though, they never really told me!" He says, holding his hands up in defense.
"Why the hay are you being so... cooperative?" Applejack asks from across the room. "Aren't ya supposed to be like... our enemy?"
"Well yeah, I guess that what my ROLE is, but I gave up on that idea a while ago. Is it okay if I tell my story?" Trent asks.
"Get on with it." I say as I lean against the end of the bed. Trent lets out a sigh and begins to explain his backstory.
"Alright, well, it all started when I was seventeen. My parents died in a car crash during my junior year, and it really broke me. I ended up losing my home because I wasn't able to keep up with bills and the such. I went broke and dropped out of school. I was homeless for two months before I met this guy, he said he could use someone like me in his organization. So, I accepted his invitation, and the next thing I knew, I was robbing and doing petty crimes with these guys. They called themselves the Daggers. About four or five months later, this guy, Jack, joined the gang. Dude was really tough, and gained the respect of everyone in the gang through brute force and cruelty. The day came when he talked all of us into kidnapping these two kids. He said someone in their family had killed some of our other members, and that he had hurt Jack directly. I think he wanted to hold them for ransom for something, but I think he's only using them to lure the guy, who I assume is you, out to the warehouse. I drew the line at hurting other people, and believed that we should let the two go. I guess Jack didn't like that idea, and he assumed the best option was to shoot me before I let the two go free while nobody was looking. So, that's all I really know. I swear, I never wanted to hurt your family!"
"...Would you be willing to help us?" I ask as I walk away from the bed, staring out of the window at the morning sky outside.
"Matt! Are you crazy? This guy is with the Daggers, we can't trust him!" Rainbow protests.
"...Can we trust you?" I ask the guy, not even turning around while ignoring Rainbow's remarks.
"Yeah, I quit that fucking gang. No way in hell would I ever agree with the shit that they're doing." Trent says from behind me.
"Alex?" I ask, seeking his approval.
"Well, Jack did shoot him, that's gotta mean something right?"
"Yeah, I think he's on our side." John adds on. "Jack wouldn't shoot him without a reason right?"
"You're all insane!" Rainbow continues to protests. She hovers over next to me, and I turn slightly to look her in the eyes. "Matt, c'mon, he took our daughter and your sister! You can't b-" I grab Rainbow out of the air, hugging her against my chest tightly.
"Rainbow, I'm tired of running from everything that looks dangerous. Sometimes you have to take risks, and this guy could really help us. Look, if he does for some reason turn on us, don't think I won't hesitate to blow his head off." I whisper into her ear.
"J-Just promise me nothing will happen. I'm tired of everyone getting sick or hurt or worse." She whispers softly back to me.
"I promise Rainbow, everything will be fine." I say as I place her on the ground and wave for her to follow me. I walk out of the room, walking past everyone in silence. I make my way out back, and start searching around for the one thing I want to find.
"Why are we out here?" She asks me as we start to walk a small ways into the woods.
"You ever killed someone Rainbow?"
"What kind of question is that? And no, I haven't"
"Would you be willing to do it for Star or Emily, maybe even me."
"To protect you? Of course I would. I wouldn't enjoy it, but I wouldn't hesitate. Why are you asking me this?"
"Because..." I say as I approach the target range that John set up earlier. "I'm gonna teach you how to use a gun."
"A gun? Matt, you realize I can't pull the trigger right? I have hooves." She says as she gives me a deadpan stare.
"Not necessarily." I respond as I get down on a knee. I grab on of her hooves, and bring it up between our faces. "See how the edge juts out a little here? If you angle it right, you could probably pull the trigger with it. I've seen how you can bend your hoof ankle thingy, and I think you could probably manipulate it to wrap around the grip. Of course, you'd have to be standing on your back hooves or flying, but we can always work that out. Also, you probably won't be able to hold a rifle, but we'll see about that later."
"So you expect me to be able to fire a pistol? Seriously Matt, are you on something right now? Even I know what I am or am not capable of."
"Well apparently you don't, because I believe in you, and if you believe in yourself, you can do anything." I say as I pat her shoulder. I pull out the pistol, and pop out the magazine. I empty completely, then take the bullet out of the chamber. I place the ammo in my pocket, and hold out the gun in Rainbow's direction.
"You sure about this Matt?" Rainbow asks with a questioning look. I respond at first with a confident smirk, then verbally.
"Hell yeah, besides, it'll look totally badass."
