Chapter 1: Starting Anew

I can't believe it has been six months since Star was born. I actually got to see her take her first steps at just two months old! Rainbow was right, ponies really do mature faster than humans. She has still yet to say her first words, but that is to be expected. I mean, c'mon, she isn't even a year old.
With high-school over, I'm finally a free adult, able to do whatever I want! While that might sound fun, it really isn't. I've found myself getting bored when I'm not around Rainbow or Star. To make things worse, Alex and Skyler are going to college next year, and that means I won't be able to see them as much as I used to. Luckily, they are going to a college in the city, so it isn't like they are completely leaving my life, just taking a step back I guess.
I'm currently laying down on my bed, waiting for Rainbow to get out of the shower. I hold Star above my head, watching her flap her tiny wings and giggling. A smile creeps across my face, and I start laughing as well. She loves when I hold her up in the air. I guess it's just instinct for her to want to fly. Rainbow told me she should be able to before she turns one. Or at least, that's how she was. While she can't talk yet, she can obviously think for herself to some extent. She knew Rainbow was her mother by instinct, and she quickly learned that I was daddy. I pull her down to my chest, and she hops around on my chest, her hooves pushing down on my ribs. Thankfully, pegasi are really light, so it doesn't hurt at all. She turns to look at me with her big emerald green eyes. My heart just melts when she sticks her tongue out at me, the same thing Rainbow has always done. I wonder when she picked that up?
"You two having fun?" Rainbow says as she walks out of the bathroom. Her mane is practically hanging down in her face, and her coat is a darker blue, having been turned that color by the water. Reminds me of Star since her coat is a darker shade of cyan than Rainbow's.
"You bet. I love playing with her." I say with a smile as I lift her back into the air. She starts giggling again, her wings spreading out to the sides, trying to keep her airborne. Little does she know that my hand is what is keeping her up. My smile grows bigger as her mouth opens.
"F-Fly!" She stutters out. My mouth shoots open, and I look over at Rainbow who has moved the hair out of her face. She looks back with a wide open grin. We both start laughing and I pull star down into a hug.
"Just like your mother!" I say with a laugh. She really must be Rainbow's daughter. Rainbow flaps her wings, and flies on over to the bed. She pushes her muzzle against Star's head, and Star lets out a coo. Too. Much. Cute. If I die right now, tell the police I had a heart attack from emotional overload.
"She reminds me of you y'know." Rainbow says as she looks up at me.
"Me? She's practically you Rainbow. She doesn't even look remotely like me. All I did was provide the... ahem, y'know." I say awkwardly as I shrug. I run a hand through Star's rainbow mane, and she quickly falls asleep. I smile and pick her up, moving her over to her crib on the other side of the room. I tuck her under a small blanket, and Rainbow and I leave the room to let her sleep.
"She reminds me of you because of how sweet you are." Rainbow says as she blushes. She really hates being all mushy and sappy, but she lets it slip out sometimes.
"Me? Sweet? You gotta be kidding Rainbow. I've killed five people, maybe even more if those two car crashes killed anyone. I also shot Jack in the leg, shot a manticore in the eye, and God knows what I've done in my past that I regret."
"You're forgetting the other side of you Matt. That's your protective side, but you also have a gentle, kind side. That's the side you just showed back there with Star Gaze."
"Heh, I guess you're right Rainbow. Anyway, what do you want for breakfast?"
"Do you know how to make pancakes?"
"Rainbow, I've made pancakes for you several time before, why would you even ask that." I say as I ruffle her hair. She laughs at her forgetfulness, and I get out the ingredients to make breakfast. It takes a few minutes, but I'm able to make a few pancakes. I fill a bottle with milk, and put it in the microwave to warm it up. Star got her milk from Rainbow in ways I won't go into detail about. Now she drinks from a bottle, which I feel more comfortable watching. While it warms up, I go back upstairs to get Star. I walk into the bedroom to find her leaning up against the side of the crib, her forelegs on the edge for support. Her head pokes out, and she giggles when I walk in.
"Alright you, lets go get some breakfast." I say with a grin as I pick her up under her forelegs, basically her armpits. She giggles and kicks her back legs. I hold her against my chest with one arm as I make my way back downstairs. I see Rainbow at the table waiting for her breakfast. It's still weird to see her without that big lump on her stomach. I guess it'll take some time to get used to that again. At least now I get to hold that lump in my arms.
"Here's the princess." I say as I put Star down on top of the table. She wanders around aimlessly as Rainbow watches her, making sure that she doesn't fall off. I take the milk bottle out of the microwave and place it down on the table.
"Want me to feed her?" Rainbow asks with a smile on her face. Still weird to look at her and think, "Hey she's a mother!" She still looks like the same old Rainbow I knew so long ago.
"Yeah, I gotta get the mail."
I walk outside, and the warm morning air hits me. I take in a deep breath, and my senses finally wake up. I wave to one of my neighbors as he mows his lawn. He waves back with a friendly smile as I walk out to the mailbox. I expect to find a bunch of bills and advertisements, which I do, but am surprised by one letter.
"Rainbow." I say as I walk back into the kitchen.
"Yeah?" Rainbow looks up from Star who is leaning against her with the bottle in her mouth.
"We... have a situation..."
"Washington D.C.?" Alex says with a confused look. I met up with Alex and Skyler for lunch, along with Rainbow so I could discuss something with all of them. I left Star at my parent's house so somebody could watch her while we got down to business.
"Yeah, it said something about a national crisis or something. Didn't go into detail really. They sent me some plane tickets though. They want me at the White House in three days."
"Are you sure they aren't just trying to get Rainbow, or even Star again?" Skyler says as she takes a sip of her drink.
"Positive. The government already assured me that Rainbow was safe. Besides, she's an official citizen of the United States. They can't touch her now, not legally anyway."
"What about Star, is she safe Matt?" Rainbow looks up at me with a worried look.
"We're both citizens of the United States, that means, by law, Star is also a citizen. She doesn't have to take a test like you did. She's safe just like you are." Rainbow lets out a sigh of relief as I explain how our country works.
"So, you're gonna go?" Alex says with one eyebrow raised.
"I guess I have to. You don't tell the government no."
"And who are you going with?"
"They sent me only one ticket, but I could just buy more for a different flight." I say casually. "I don't suppose you would all like to go?"
"Going to the capital? Hell yeah I wanna go!" Alex has always been a real history nerd, he just doesn't like to show it a lot. No wonder he wants to go so badly.
"Alright, I'll buy four tickets for a flight to Washington tomorrow. We'll head out on Friday."
"Good thing they sent you this during the summer, or else they wouldn't be able to go." Rainbow points out. She's right, they probably would both be too busy with college to really go with us. I could use the backup and support anyway. Never know if they might try to pull something with Rainbow.
"I guess we can leave Star with my parents and Emily for a day or two." I say as I fish out the cash to pay for lunch.
"Sounds like a plan." Skyler says as we all stand up. Once we get to the parking lot, we split up and go our separate ways. I bought a new truck recently so we could take Star to the store or other places. We just couldn't do that on a motorcycle. We hop into the truck and make our way to my parent's house to pick up Star.
"Are you sure about this?" Rainbow says questionably.
"Yeah, they said something about a crisis. I don't think they're lying either. I say we check it out, see just what is going on."
If there truly is something bad happening, and they need ME for it, then it cannot be something good. It has to be related to magic or something.
I just hope I can live up to their expectations. If I can't, who knows what will happen.
We arrive at my parent's house about five minutes later. We park in the driveway, and make our way to the front door. I take out my own key to unlock it, and make my way inside.
"Hello Matt." My mom says with a smile as she cleans some dishes. "Looking for Star?"
"Yeah, where is she?"
"Upstairs with Emily. She really loves that foal."
"Thanks mom. Say, I'll be out of town for... business, for a couple of days starting Friday. Can you watch Star for me while I'm gone?"
"Of course! I'm sure Emily would be very excited to watch her!"
"Thanks mom!" I say as I lead Rainbow up the stairs. We enter Emily's room to find her brushing Star's hair like she's some kind of doll.
"Aren't you a little old to do that?" I say as I walk in. My voice startles Emily, and she jumps a little. Star runs over to Rainbow and basically wraps herself around Rainbow's leg.
"I thought her hair was too messy." Emily says with a smile.
"Have you seen Rainbow's hair? It looks like somebody put a leaf blower right up against it." Emily and I laugh at my joke. Rainbow just gives me a deadpan stares. She ruffles up Star's mane to make it match her own.
"Aw man! I worked on that for like, ten minutes!" Emily says, a smile still on her face.
"Emily, I got a surprise for you." I say as I kneel down next to her. For a twelve year old, she's still pretty short. "Wanna watch Star for a couple of days while we go out of town?"
"Yes! I'll be the best big sister!" She says excitedly.
"Alright, I'll bring her over on Friday. I'll see you then!" I save as the three of us exit the room. We make our way back out to the truck, and I buckle Rainbow in. There isn't a car seat big enough for Star, so Rainbow just holds her tightly against her chest. Not the safest way to do it, but really our only option.
"Alright... lets go pack." I sigh, not from frustration, but just from anticipation. Whatever the fucking government needs ME for, can't be good.
I'll do what I can to make sure my family is safe.
