15. Due Process

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.”

So it seems like things got crazy while I was unconscious. I am still stiff as hell but not in too much pain thanks to the nerve blocks. Unfortunately, I still can’t feel my feet too well, but that should go away as the blocks fade. I’m going to skip the info that Rose already provided in her previous logs to get onto the more important stuff.

Namely that this planet is home to intelligent non-human life. That wasn’t a typo. So far, we’ve recorded a total of six distinct species. Strangely enough, all but two of them are fairly decent analogues of creatures from old Terran mythology or history. Granted they’ll have some deviation, but you have your ponies, unicorns, pegasi, and oddly enough, griffons. The two unknowns so far are a winged unicorn that appears to be their ruling class, and a type of pegasi with fangs, slit pupils, and bat-like wings. All of these with the exception of Griffons have some weird coloring that is either a strange adaptation or cultural dying of their fur.

Speaking of the ruling class, Rose has dubbed the “pony” species as Equanoids until we can get some kind of translation as to what they call themselves. Each of the ruling class seem to have some kind of strange adaptations. It’s unsure if it is technological or otherwise since they have “magic” but their mane and tails all seem to move in an unseen breeze.

Since we don’t have official names for each of the rulers, they are just being designated E1 through E4 as of right now. E1 is the first one we encountered. E1 would be the indigo Equanoid that has a stylized moon on her rear thighs. I’m guessing that’s what you could call it anyhow. Oddly enough that one’s mane seems to appear as if there were stars in it. Odd, but strongly leaning towards some kind of weirdness. E2 is a touch larger, being mostly alabaster with a mane colored like a sunset and a sun marking on her butt. I’m seeing a theme here. Normally I’d think a ruling couple, but all are female. Matriarchal society maybe?

E3 is the one attempting translation. She is the smallest of the bunch, with a lavender coloring. Thankfully the rest doesn’t seem too odd, with an indigo and pink tail, despite the multiple star markings. Lastly is E4, the weird one. She has a blue heart marking on her rear, with honestly girly coloring. Pink, lavender, yellow, and violet. Thankfully Rose is the one mainly interacting with them so far. Not like I can talk to them or anything.

She has been working fairly hard at some kind of translation for most of today, but it’s been slow going to say the least. Personally, I don’t understand the “how” of how finding a meeting ground of our math systems will help, but there’s a reason why Rose is the AI and I’m not. Thankfully her counterpart on the Equanoid side seems to be a bit of a nerd as well.

Regardless of how the translation goes, Rose thinks I’ll never be able to speak their language. That was kind of obvious already though. At best, she’ll be able to write a program suite for the in suit systems to translate written stuff. Audio is a maybe, but likely one way unless Rose or a frame are nearby. I didn’t know this, but apparently Rose’s “anatomy” lets her make a much wider variety of noises than a regular human because she has full control over all that. Yes, she was giggling after saying that. The frames just have regular old speakers systems so that would work too.

While Rose works on the translation with the Equanoids tomorrow morning, I’ll be working on getting SAC-009 plugged in and downloaded, if it recorded much of anything. Honestly, after wearing that Atlas all day I’m sweaty and chafed. Looks like it needs an hour or so of TLC tonight, so a frame is tasked with that. Tomorrow will be nice since I’ll just be in my flight suit. Naturally my helmet will be nearby though.

Oh, before I forget, that is something important. So far other than some possible allergen risks there doesn’t seem to be anything major with the biome that can kill humans. The atmosphere is a touch toxic though. In short doses it won’t hurt anyone, but the high fluorine levels aren’t good for you either though. So as a whole I’m just going to keep wearing a mask at minimum when I’m outside. Probably a full helmet though. Still fucking stiff from that damn Wyvern...thing.

So it looks like Rose and E3 were up almost all night before the other Equanoids convinced her to go back to their camp. There was a weird energy reading this morning though. It wasn’t around long enough to get a good read on, but I have the computer set to keep an eye out for that reading again. Rose is using most of her processing on the translation, so I have to do a lot manually right now. Still feels weird.

Nothing major so far today. One of the other royals brought out a picture book and Rose matched it with some printouts. I’m pretty sure they’re trying to teach the other the alphabet or something. It’ll be nice to be able to “talk” to them at some point or another though.

What. The. Fuck. Seriously, what the fuck?!

Okay, let me start over. So we got lucky. So insanely incredibly lucky. Almost the same reading popped up last night with some variation. Then the first one popped up at 0700 sharp this morning. Like exactly on 0700 give or take a few seconds. This made both Rose and myself curious as hell because that is oddly specific. Both sets of readings looked like they were coming from the Equanoid main camp.

Rose is still out there talking while she crunches numbers on this in here with me. But here’s what it looks like, and I’ve attached all the data. One of the guards came up to the Royals a touch after 1900, saying something and pointing at the sky. After a brief laugh, E1 and E2 together used their technology, magic, whatever you call it, at the same time.

So yeah, how I said we got lucky? Um. We have zero idea how, but they moved both the sun and the moon. I’m not talking they moved a little. I mean we were still in sunset, then it was suddenly night with the moon above the horizon. Two things were learned. One, apparently this is a geocentric solar system. We never noticed because it never crossed our mind to check. Two was E1 and E2 literally dragged a fucking star and moon around the planet like toys without wrecking everything.

I’m not even sure there’s a number for the amount of power that should take. The lucky part is when you think about the distances involved in this. If we were in orbit of the star when it was moved, we’d have died before even knowing it. The damn thing was literally dragged faster than the speed of goddamn light. That breaks everything about physics. EVERYTHING.

What?

Rose thinks my blood pressure is getting too high and I’ll bust one of the nerve blocks, so she’s giving me some meds and telling me to go lay down for a bit. That’s not going to fucking help, but I’ll humor her.

Okay, I’ve had the better part of a day to come to terms with that realization. The general consensus between Rose and myself is that we’re not going to think about it. We don’t have the sensors or computing power to even try to figure it out in any meaningful way. This was supposed to be a mineral hunting trip, not a “we broke reality” vacation.

*sigh*

Despite the world suddenly not making any sense, Rose thinks she’s managed to piece together some basic form of literary translation software. It’ll need a ton of refining, but it’s a start none the less. We’ll be giving it a try in the morning if all goes well. Beyond that, we’ve discovered a few interesting things about our “hosts.” Nothing special and relevant, but apparently they enjoy coffee and sugar. I really had to try hard not to laugh though. Rose had the frames bring out some coffee as the Royals had provided tea earlier in the day. Between the four Equanoid royals, they managed to eat an entire bowl of sugar cubes in the span of fifteen minutes. I’m sorry, but it is hilarious to see a magic space horse eating raw sugar like it’s the best treat in the world. Too freaking surreal.

I wonder if they thought we were bribing them or something. That would be our luck. Speaking of luck, we’ll need it tomorrow. Hopefully we won’t accidentally say they are all donkeys or the like.
