One Stormy Night
Chapter 1: One Stormy Night
by Nugget

There was a storm raging outside the window of a little filly’s home.
While the raindrops were tapping against the glass with a charismatic rhythm that matched the chaos of the weather’s natural symphony, the thunder roared with an alarming flash of sound and light, managing to wake up a young unicorn from her slumber. Scared awake by the intensity of the downpour, she immediately clung to her Woona doll and quivered in a fetal position at the back of her bed. She tried to stay as far away from her window as she possibly could.
“The night will last forever!” shouted her little plushie as the filly continued to cling onto it.
However, no matter how many times she continued to brace herself and scream for every blast of thunder that echoed throughout her room, the conditions outside were not letting up and she was quickly needing the comfort of something else that wasn’t artificial. She needed her parents, and quick. To her, the time of night wasn’t a factor since her nerves were terrifying her.
Hopping off the bed and putting her little Woona on her back, she tip-toed past her toys that were sprawled out on the floor before racing to her bedroom door and opening it with her teal aurora. Making her way down the hallway, another wave of thunder made her jump while she hurried her pace towards the quarters of where her parents laid. She managed to stop just short of their white door.
Slowly opening it up, the lighting managed to give the filly just enough of an illumination to see her parents fast asleep on their bed, as if the storm wasn’t bothering their slumber. Creeping over to where her daddy laid, the small white unicorn shivered in fear as she approached her snoring father. She was careful to raise her shaking hoof.
She slowly nudged his shoulder, “Daddy… Daddy, I’m scared!”
“Wah…. uhhh, I… a… eh… ummm…” were the only things he could mutter out as he slowly opened his eyes, just barely enough to see his little daughter looking at him with trembling eyes and having a mouth that was curled up and almost pouting.
“Daddy, Daddy,” the little filly repeated. “I’m scared! Can I please sleep with you?”
Upon realizing that the demands were coming from his little unicorn, he rolled his eyes and pulled the covers back over his shoulder. “Oh, darling please… Go back to your bed, you will be fine… Besides, the storm isn’t that scary.”
“Yes it is!” cried the filly. “It’s very scary and I want you to protect me from it!”
The stallion turned back to his daughter. “Really… It’s that scary?”
“Yes it is! The rain and the thunder and lighting woke me and my little princess up and now I’m scared!” she said with a slight stutter in her voice, almost on the verge of crying.
“And you think that curling up with me will make things all better?” he asked, still half-asleep.
“Yes it will!” She recalled, “You have said that you will always protect me from anything scary and that you will always be there for me! You promised, you promised, you promised!”
The father sighed. It seemed to him that his own words have come back to make him regret saying them, as if he should have not said anything to begin with. However, if there was any duty that a father must fulfill, it had to be being there for their children regardless of how ridiculous the circumstances may be. Even if their child was just demanding to sleep with them.
“I promised, right?” he asked.
“Yes you did!” she responded with eyes that were almost as wide as her face.
“I promised to be there for you whenever you need me?” He leaned down and gazed at his little daughter, certain that every word he spoke was being directed to her. “And that I will always protect you from anything that is scary and might harm you, correct?”
“Yes, Daddy!” she cheered.
“So, if I let you onto the bed, will you promise me that you will fall asleep quickly?” he said with lowered eyebrows.
“I promise, Daddy!” she said with absolute certainty.
“Then get on up here you rascal!” he demanded with a slight chuckle in his voice.
Using her two front hoofs to hop up and onto the bed, the little unicorn found a spot between her parents and laid down, curling herself into a small white fluffy ball with her Woona doll tucked into her belly. It didn’t take anymore than a couple of seconds for her not be as afraid of the storm anymore as she fell asleep under the embrace of her father. He almost laughed at how fast she was able to go back sleep before kissing his little filly on the forehead.
The mother of the unicorn then turned to face her daughter being hugged endlessly by the earth pony of which she married. She herself almost bared a laugh seeing her husband looking up at the ceiling. The look on his face just said, “The things I put up with her.”
“Another sleepless night?” the unicorn mare whispered.
He nodded his head.
The mare giggled before leaning into her husband and kissing him on the muzzle. “You look so cute when you are frustrated,” she said after their embrace.
He whispered back, “This all comes as part of the territory, raising this little bundle of trouble and joy.”
“You still love her?” she grinned.
“Of course, even if she is the most difficult pony in Equestria… besides you,” he slyly remarked.
The wife huffed, “Well remember that next you decide to want any dinner… Since the most difficult pony in Equestria might not like whatever you want.”
He quietly complained with a high pitch whine in his voice, “But I don’t like broccoli!” He curled his lips.
“Gah!” she cried out. “You are sooo childish.”
“Oh, ha, ha!” he replied while tucking his daughter in a bit tighter before rolling his eyes away from his wife.
Silence had fallen between the three as the mare and stallion both laid next to each other with their daughter being the only obstacle that separated them. Accompanied by the sound of the little unicorn’s snoring and the storm that was beginning to die down, the couple looked at their filly and just felt like smiling. Before they knew it, something else just caused them to chuckle and giggle with each other, almost as if their years as younglings never left their older bodies.
“I love you,” he said to her.
“I love you too,” she replied.
