Chapter 30: Christmas Gifts (for Titanium Dragon)

Christmas Gifts (for Titanium Dragon)

As Rarity placed the last few presents on the precariously tall pile of neatly wrapped gifts, she gave a quiet sigh of relief and wiped away the slight sheen of sweat that had formed on her brow. She’d just spent the day making, wrapping, and stacking gifts. And even though she hadn’t exerted that much physical strength, she had overtaxed her magic which left her feeling drained. But when she looked at the massive pile of gifts stacked in the foyer of her boutique, a warmth filled her heart that gave her a different kind of energy.

She’d missed out on several hours of work taking her time preparing these gifts, and even though this would cost her countless hours and several sleepless nights to make up, she had absolutely no regrets. How could she? These gifts were for the Canterlot Orphanage. These gifts would go to ponies who had no families, ponies who had never received a gift for Hearth’s Warming Eve in their lives.

With a warm smile forming on her muzzle that matched the warmth in her heart, Rarity walked happily into the kitchen and made herself a cup of hot cocoa to drink while she waited for Twilight and Applejack to knock on her door. That  knock came just as Rarity finished her hot cocoa and she quickly navigated her way through the massive mess of presents to let her friends in. When she opened the door both Twilight and Applejack’s mouths dropped open as they saw all the presents crowding the main floor of the boutique.

Rarity giggled at their expressions before stepping aside to let her guests in. “Do come in darlings, it’s absolutely freezing out there.” Both mares accepted her invitation, and they continued staring in speechless awe at the piles of brightly-wrapped presents.

Twilight’s horn glowed and she picked up one of the presents to read the tag attached to it. “For Princess Celestia’s Canterlot Orphanage.” Twilight lowered the present and looked up at Rarity. “Are you saying the massive order you needed our help to deliver to Canterlot is in fact all these gifts that you made for the orphanage?”

Rarity’s cheeks flushed and she nodded. “I’m sorry I wasn’t entirely truthful with both of you, but I don’t want anypony to know what I’m doing.” Her comment received shocked looks from her two friends.

“But Rarity, what you’re doing is amazing!” Twilight exclaimed. “Giving the orphanage gifts so the ponies without families won’t miss out... Why wouldn’t you want anypony to know?”

Rarity’s smile grew wider. “Because darling, I’m not interested in gaining extra favor from anypony. The warm feeling that I get in my heart from knowing I’ve made somepony who is less fortunate than I happy on Hearth’s Warming Eve is all the reward I need. So please don’t tell anypony what I’m doing.”

Twilight threw her forelegs and wings around Rarity’s body and pulled her into a tight hug, she held the unicorn in her embrace for several moments and when she pulled back Twilight’s eyes were brimming with tears of happiness. “I-I don’t even know what to say.”

“There is absolutely no need to say anything, darling. I’m not doing this for praise or recognition, I simply wish to bring joy to the fillies and colts who have no family to spend Hearth’s Warming day with.”

Applejack cleared her throat to get Twilight and Rarity’s attention. “Ah hate ta be a grinch on your plans, Rarity, but there is no way we can get all these presents to Canterlot tomorrow morning before the foals wakeup. Even with the cart I bought, and Twilight’s magic, gettin’ the presents to the train station through all this snow, and packed onto the train will take several hours and by then the train will have left.”

Rarity’s ears folded back against her head and she sat down on her haunches, her face a mask of despair as she felt the warmth draining from her heart at the thought of all those orphans going another Hearth’s Warming Eve without presents.

“NO!” Twilight said, stomping a hoof. “I refuse to let all Rarity’s hard work go to waste. We’re getting these presents to Canterlot one way or another!”

“And just how do ya plan on doin’ that?” Applejack asked.

A smile formed on Twilight’s muzzle. “I’m going to teleport us to my personal chambers in Canterlot castle. From there we can distribute the gifts to the orphanage.”

Rarity gave her friend a doubtful look. “I know your magic is powerful, darling. But teleporting us, not to mention all these presents, to Canterlot does seem a bit much, even for you. No offense.”

“Well I’d be lying if I said I was completely confident in my ability to do this, but ever since I became an alicorn I’ve been studying up on long-range teleportation spells. I just need total concentration if I’m to do this successfully.”

Rarity and Applejack’s mouths snapped shut and they stared expectantly at Twilight, who drew in a deep breath and closed her eyes. Her horn began glowing brightly with its aura of violet magic, and in a flash of light that left everypony’s vision blurred, the group disappeared from the boutique.

Celestia—who’d so far been enjoying a large cup of hot cocoa with her sister Luna in front of a warm fire—was suddenly brought out of her state of relaxation as a flash of bright light blinded her. Both she and Luna were buried beneath a mountain of beautifully wrapped presents, all of which were marked for the Canterlot Orphanage.
