Chapter 1: Summer's End

Summer's End

Author's Note:

This is like a prologue chapter, just named differently, the characters are sitting around, choosing their electives and such, no more deets.

P.S.: the next chapter happens a week after this one, and Nightshade has braces.

Rainbow Dash, Rouge, Twilight Sparkle, and I sit in my room, me in my desk chair, Twilight and Rouge on the couch next to my dark oak desk, and RD on my waterbed. I have to choose up to four electives and at least one extracurricular activity. So far, I have THOUGHT about band with Rouge. I know that my science will be chemistry with Rainbow (yes!) and the rest of our group, our eighth grade science teach requested we be not only in chemistry, but on the advanced team- Falcons, as it’s called- with tenth grade classes.

“Hey, Dash,” I say out of random, hoping she had picked some classes or an extracurricular activity. “You got anything down for electives? Or a club? Anything?”

“Nope,” Dash responded, with a slight lisp from the braces in her mouth. “Not a thing. I would do band, but that’d ruin my rep, and I need that.” She has a slight lisp because of the braces in her mouth.

“Well, I’m thinkin’ about doing band, mostly because in middle school, I jammed out on the clarinet,” I say, writing band down in two boxes- it’s a full year class. “I’m gonna go with anime club with the after school thing. I don’t know about any of you guys, but I like anime. It’s pretty cool.”

“Coolio,” Rouge said as he scribbled something onto his papers, presumable what I have. “So looks like me and Nightshade might do band together, and we’ll definitely be in anime club together. So, anybody wanna do agroscience with me? Anybody?”

“Sure,” Twilight said. “I guess that’s me. I’ve got everything down. I’m doing band, agroscience, and robotics. Anime club is my extracurricular activity.”

“Damn,” I say after hearing Twilight’s list. “Twilight in band AND anime club? Get to the bunker, it’s the apocalypse! Get the guns!”

RD giggled as a faked flipping out. I never knew Twilight was into anime and band. She never seemed like the kind of person for it. She seemed more like the kind of person to pick a class where you’re performing for hundreds- if not thousands- of people live and where one fluke and you’ll be embarrassed forever.

“I have my stuff down,” I say, looking everything over and making sure I have what I want. “I’m doing band, agro, and survival classes.” I looked at Dashie’s paper, she had band and agro, but she had Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) as her third elective. “Dashie, you’re doing band? Surprised. Never thought you would do a performing arts class. Ever.”

“You and Twilighth are doing it, so why noth me? Is that a sin?” Dashie asked, embarrassed that she was doing band. “And don’t call me Dashie, only Pinkie can do that. And, Nighthade, you were always saying how awesome band in middle school was, so why not it in high school. YOLO.”

“Eh,” Rouge says. “Band wasn’t all Nightshade cracked it up to be. It could be a pile of crap sometimes. Like the long bus rides for the field trips. Unless you sat near me and Nightshade, we always made jokes and dicked around.”

“Whatefer,” Dash said as she set her papers on my desk and stood up to go to the bathroom. “I’ll be back in a thec.”

I reach into the mini fridge next to my desk and pull open the door, revealing a bunch of sodas and energy drinks. Mostly the later. I pull out Mountain dew Kickstart and pop it open.

“NS,” Rouge says as I drink the highly caffeinated, unhealthy, delicious drink. “Toss me one.”

I pull another Kickstart of the same flavor as mine- berry (i'm to lazy to read the can and go off it's aesthetics)- and throw it into the waiting hands of Rogue. The unicorn popped the top of the soda and drank a good third of it (I’ve known Rouge for nine years, and drinking two of these a day, I can guess how much Rouge drinks) before stopping to breathe.

Dash walks into the room, grabs an energy drink and drinks some. She grabs her elective papers and I can tell instantly that we need to get to the school and turn these in pronto. High school registration is today, and that means we also have to turn in our elective sheets.

5 HOURS LATER

I sit down on my bed and pull out my phone. I look at the two texts I got in the past hour. I had just been doing some personal hygiene for the past hour (obviously if I didn’t check my texts) and I couldn’t get to my phone.

The first text reads: Hey, Shade, it’s me, RD, need to know if you’re gonna go to the new buffet opening Thursday. The rest of the gang is going and I wanna know if you’re down, too.

The second text reads: Hey, Nightshade, its Rouge, and the fishing trip we were gonna go on is gonna need to be rescheduled, I’m getting a tonsillectomy that day, I just found out a few minutes ago that I had tonsillitis.

To Dash’s comment, I say “Yeah, gonna go reserve a table now.” For Rouge’s text, I put the first weekend of the school year as the date, and he says he’s down for it.

I look up at my celling and sigh. Summer was over and I and my friends are going into high school. The last four years of school, then college, that’s a whole other story that I’m not going into. I wish I was still in middle school, where we were young.

I walk to my little brother’s room. It’s only six o’clock and he’s up listening to music and playing Minecraft.

“Hey, short-stack,” I say, a I lean on his doorframe. “You excited for sixth grade? Or are you still a fifth grader?”

“No,” my brother- he’s named Poison Berries- said as he spammed his mouse. “No to both those questions. I know all my classes will suck and science fair will suck and everything will suck.”

“I liked middle school,” I say with a smile on my face. “My friends and I always goofed off. We never payed attention and still passed with flying colors.”

“Yeah” Poison said as he stood up. “Guess you’re right. It might not be all bad.”

“That’s the spirit!” I say. “Yeah, middle school had some good times. Goood tiiiimes. Well, hasta la vista. Viva la vida.”

With that, I walked away and into my kitchen to get something to eat.
