Chapter 3: A bone-rattling backstory....

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

"So, have you ever heard of 'souls'?" Sans randomly asked as Sunset walked up to her house. She looked down at the skeleton guy, wondering what he meant.

"Well... Sort of? It's a myth that every human has one. It sort of makes up our being." She said, walking up to her door. Sans slowly nodded, as if he understood what he was saying as he followed her.

"What makes you ask that?" Sunset asked, as she slid the key into the keyhole of her door. Sans chuckled.

"It's nothing. Just...." He began as Sunset opened the door to her home. She looked back at him with a smile.

"Yes?" She politely asked. He softly chuckled, and looked into her eyes.

"What if I told you I can show you your own soul?" He asked. She looked at him awkwardly as his eyes disappeared.

"Heh heh heh... Forget about it. Sorry, I just thought you might be interested." He said. She shook her head, and giggled.

"It's okay. Maybe you can show me some other time, alright? Maybe tomorrow? I'll be off then." She said, leaving him to nod. She looked back forward, and proceeded to walk into the building, Sans following. He looked around in the dark house, it looking like the layout of his old house. There was a kitchen, a small living room with a large TV... And once she turned on the lights, it revealed a staircase. She looked to him, and reached into her pocket.

"Why don't you get settled in? I'll heat something up and maybe we can watch something on the TV." She said, handing him a key. She pointed to the staircase.

"Your room is gonna be on the farthest side of the staircase." She said, him nodding in response.

"Thanks. Is there any way I can repay you?" He asked. She shook her head and chuckled.

"It was just.... The right thing to do, ya know?" She said, letting him nod. She took off her jacket, and he started to walk towards the staircase. As he got there, he was deep in thought. He looked around, seeing Christmas decorations on the wall, and even a small tree next to the large tv. He took the first step, putting his hand on the railing. It felt smooth.... So familiar. Oak wood. He sighed, as he wanted to frown but he couldn't.

"Something wrong?" Sunset asked from the other side of the room. He shook his head.

"No, this just reminds me of the past...." He said. He rubbed on the railing, thinking of Papyrus.

"What parts of the past?" She asked. His eyes disappeared from his sockets. She immediately knew she had hit some cartilage.

"S-sorry. If you don't want to share, it's fine." She said. He shook his head. His pupils returned to his eyes as he chuckled.

"Again, sorry for my sulking. It's just... This reminds me so much of home." He said. She nodded.

"I miss home too sometimes. If I had an opportunity to start over, I would make sure that I didn't make any mistakes." She said. He looked up.

"Can't you just reset?" He asked. She looked to him, confused.

"Where I come from, humans have the ability to SAVE and LOAD. You can't?" He asked with a confused look in his eye. She shrugged, and looked him directly in the dark abyss that she could hardly call 'eyes'.

"Sorry, but I honestly have no idea what you're talking about." She said, looking to the kitchen.

"I should get things ready. Go make yourself comfortable. I'll call you down when things are ready." She said. He nodded, and continued to walk up the stairs. As he walked, he realized something.

"This is the wrong timeline..." He thought to himself. By now, if he hadn't met Sunset, she would've hung herself. He reached the top of the staircase, and quietly opened the door to her room. It was dark inside. He closed his eyes, and thought of the layout.

"Sans." He heard a voice." He turned around, seeing Sunset tower over him.

"Please don't look in here. There are some... Embarrassing things in here." She said. He slowly turned around, and looked down. He chuckled.

"Heh heh heh...." Came his monotone laugh.

"Sunset, I have a question for you. I already know about the rope in your closet." He said. She looked to him, blushing.

"I-It was a backup plan in case things didn't go well tonight." She said. Sans looked up, his eyes gone.

"Who have been the ones hurting you?" He asked. She looked into the empty holes. So cold... Yet warm.

"W-well.... I could never bring myself to do it. Even though once I... Almost." She said. He nodded.

"I see. I know what happened." He said. She looked to him confused. How could he know what happened?

"Well... If you do, why don't you tell me the story from the start?" She asked with suspicion in her voice. He chuckled and looked down.

"I know almost all of your timelines, ever since my eyes met yours." He said. His pupils reappeared in the sockets.

"Why don't we go sit down? It's gonna be a long story." He said, as he closed the door to Sunset's room.

"Why....?" She asked herself, sobbing loudly as she slammed her door without even bothering to lock it. She had just lost to Twilight in the battle for the crown, and almost turned the entire school into teenage zombies. She had all the power she wanted at her fingertips, yet it slid from them like droplets of water. She threw her backpack down in rage, and tears trickled out of her eyes.

"Why does everything happen like this?! I wanted power!! But you took that away!! Damn you Twilight!!" She shouted at the top of her lungs towards the ceiling.

"Don't you have just the slightest bit of remorse? Don't you feel sorry for any of your actions?" A small voice in the back of her head asked. She sighed.

"I just... Don't know. I wanted power. But... She took that opportunity away! I had it right in my hands, and she just... Snatched it!!" She yelled, taking off her boots and throwing them to the ground.. There was silence in the darkened house. She looked around as if she should see everything around her.

"They probably wouldn't even miss me if I was gone... I'm probably just a chore to them from 'Princess Twilight'." She said, breathing heavily. She gently took her socks off, revealing sweaty flesh. She wanted to rip everything apart so badly... She didn't want anything else.

"Maybe there is a way to make it up to them..." The voice said to her. She suddenly frowned.

"Remove myself from the equation...." Silence. The voice had left, leaving her saddened. She looked down, and gulped. She had never considered suicide before... But... Nobody would want her around anymore. She looked to a nearby door. It was the closet. She opened the closet, and looked around. Pretty soon she found a rope. She knew exactly what she needed to do. Without a word, she grabbed the rope, and headed to the nearby staircase. She held the rope tight in hand, determined of what to do. She walked up the stairs and down the hallway to near the middle of the two doors. She immediately started to tie the rope onto the railing. She was gonna do this, and she was gonna have no regrets. After she got the rope tied around the railing, she grabbed the other end of the rope and started to tie it around her neck. She never knew how this was supposed to work.... She would either hang to her death or fall. As she lifted herself onto the railing, tears trickled out of her eyes. She stood on the thin railing, yet managed to keep her balance.

"Are you happy?! Knowing that someone is going to die tonight?!" She shouted in the void known as her house. She could hear nothing. Until, she felt a soft hand on the ankle of her foot.

"I'm not happy..." A gentle voice said. She immediately knew who this was.

"Please, Sunset. Give friendship one chance. We are erasing your mistake so you can start over." The voice of Fluttershy said. Sunset couldn't help but cry.

"If I just got rid of myself, none of you guys would care... I'm just a chore...." She said, wanting to just topple over and end it all.

"I know you do, but it wouldn't be right. This is the dawn of a new... Friendship. We just want to show you the way Sunset. That's all." Fluttershy said, as she reached to the nearby wall. There she flipped a switch, which turned on the staircase lights. Soon, the girl with fiery hair put her hands to her face and started to sob into it. She stepped down from the railing, and hugged the pink haired girl.

"Please... Give me a second chance... I'm so sorry..." She said, digging her wet face into Fluttershy's shoulder. The girl couldn't help but cry too.

"I forgive you.... You're my friend..." She said.

"Now, let's get that rope off of you." She said, smiling.

"And that's how it happened. She forgave you, and They became your friends." He said. The fiery haired-girl's face was in awe of how he knew this. Even though she came from a different dimension with magical talking ponies that could do spells and weird shit, she had never seen anything like this before.

"And may I include that she came into your house before you, worried that you might do something rash to yourself." He said. She started to tear up, but was interrupted at a knock at the door.

"Sunset? Are ya there?" A familiar cowgirl asked from the other side. She immediately got up, and walked to the door. She opened it, and she saw her six former friends, along with the crusaders.

"Darling, I'm afraid we misjudged you." The purple haired fashionista said, wiping her eyes with her pale hand. Sunset look to the other girls, who were looked down in shame. The crusaders walked up to the door, tears in their eyes.

"S-Sunset. We're sorry we put you through so much pain." Sweetie Belle said. She looked down at them.

"What are you guys doing here this late at night? Don't you have some 'friendship sleepover' without me to attend to?" She asked with sass as she looked at the older teenage women. Applejack sighed.

"Please just hear us out. We know you aren't Anon-a-miss." She said. Sunset scoffed and rolled her eyes.

"Do you really think I'm in the mood for this right now? If I didn't run into someone on the street, you probably would've found me, dead hanging in my closet." She said. Applejack looked up in fear, as did Fluttershy.

"Sugarcube... I didn't know that we drove you that far. I'm so s-" She began, before she was cut off.

"Don't you 'Sugarcube' me! I'm not welcome around you guys, remember? So...." She gritted her teeth, as she let her anger go.

"You guys aren't welcome around HERE!!! Go away!" She said, slamming the door. Applejack stared in awe of what just happened. She was just rejected by Sunset. She thought that Sunset would want to start over, but that was definitely not the case.

"You really go to her, huh?" A male voice asked near the side of her house. The girls all turned around to see a short, hooded, humanoid creature spinning a bone on its finger underneath an open window. It looked up, revealing a blue, glowing eye.

"Boy, do I have a bone to pick with you."
