Chapter 4: A old life

"Right this way Mrs. Dazzle."

Adagio was livid, her entire body trembled with every step deeper into the maternity ward of Canterlot Hospital. Twenty minutes, TWENTY minutes, the humans had kept her away from her wife. The excuse of "prepping her" was bullshit and Adagio knew it. She could almost hear the whispers from the passing nursing staff.

"-Oh look, that lesbian couple finally popped eh?-"

"-Ya, how disgusting!-"

"-Did you see the horde of there clearly gay friends in the lobby. Society is doomed.-"

Well maintained nails dug into her soft palms. The former lead singer barely contained a almost feral growl in the back of her throat.

"Here we are Mrs. Dazzle, just slip this on and also these gloves. I would suggest a face mask as their is the chance of fluid contamination within the birthing room."

Ruby eyes snapped too her guiding nurse, the growl came out now as she lifted a fist.

"Like my Wife's blood?"

"Excuse me?"

"I won't let any of you human trash harm her, not today, not EVER!"

"Ahem, Mrs. Dazzle I realize this is a very, strained and worrisome time for you. But rest assured our staff will do it's all to ensure the safety of both your Wife and child. Now please, you must hurry. I shall await you out side and show you to your Wife's room."

Adagio felt the rage burn out of her, replaced by urgency. Yanking the scrubs on ignoring the offered mask and snatching gloves after she washed her hands, the Siren was out the door before it had even closed behind the stern nurse.

"My...well then, do come along."

"WHERE THE FUCK IS ADAGIO!!!!!"

The agony filled scream echoed through out that level of the hospital. Seven sets of eyes snapped to the sealed doors chairs shifted as boots and shoes hit the floor. The timely arrival of aides had now taken up post to prevent the worried ladies from barging deeper into the ward, the duo of men crossed they're arms and tried they're best not to break into cold sweats as the death filled eyes of Aria and Rainbow shot holes through them.

For the first time since she had entered the hospital, Adagio felt her lips curve into that oh so her smirk. She no longer needed her guide and with the clip of her spiked heels she was past her and throwing open the double doors with all the presence of a queen entering her throne room. At least if it was a thrown room, it wouldn't smell like this. The stink of blood, sweat, fecal matter and general stress filled her overly sensitive nose. Her gaze found the swollen form of her mate, mounted up in some horrible device her legs splayed with a nurse tending to her brow with a damp cloth. Funny, television can never really portray live birth and do it justice.

"Da..dagi!"

In a flash she was to her lovers side, knelt and taken the out stretched hand into both of her own.

"Mlove, oh dearest they kept me from you, but no longer. Are you alright?"

"No! I have a damn watermelon shoving its way out of me! You idiot I am NOT all right."

Familiar pain of crushing fingers soon washed over the teeth gritting Siren. She knew her mate didn't mean her words, pain did horrible things to the body and mind. Adagio knew all to well the depths a body can reach in agony. As she began the practiced chant of "breath, good." her mind washed away to nearly a decade ago.

"Adagio?"

Winter winds snapped around the fur and leather cloaked Sunset Shimmer. She stood in the February chill starring deep into the alley in southern Canterlot City. From the darkness rose a figure, and even as it made into the street light, Sunset felt her heart lurch. It had been a passing cars head light glint off the Siren leaders signature mane of hair that had stopped the Unicorn turned human. But, as the once crowd enthralling female stepped into the light, her hair over grown, dragging on the floor, mated, dirty, reeking. Was the least of the horror.

Adagio stood in what could only be described in "stereotypical" homeless wear. One foot was wrapped in tape and stray cloth, the other in a worn out, several sizes to big sneaker. Her body was wrapped in assorted dumpster found garments, if it wasn't the child sized pink rain coat, a rope tied pair of hole riddled mens slacks. It was the dish towel turned scarf hiding most of her face.

Ruby eyes starred out in wonder, only to shift to pure hatred.

"Y..you.."

"Adagio, it is you. By Celestia, what...what happened to you?"

One clearly starved finger was pointed at the Rainboom leader.

"You did..."

Sunset took a step back, having faced the alley and her former foe, she took a moment to take in the Sirens depleted form.

Six months since the battle, it had only been six months. But before her stood a skin coated skeleton. Starved, with sunken eyes and cheeks, her limbs no larger then a childs half her size. The taunt of the rope that held her pants up, showed just how narrow her waist had become, if pressed Sunset was sure she could cup her hands on either side and lock fingers in the back. But the truest of tragedies, was what had become of her hips.

When the Sirens had they're powers, the power of song, all eyes went to them. But Sunset Shimmer was pretty sure even without those powers, Adagio could have the world wrapped around her little finger. "Mommy hips" didn't come close to the door frame scrapping orbs of voluptuous women hood. Now, now all she could see was a pair of hip bones jutting out in malnourished horror.

"Adagio, by..by..Celestia. What happened?"

The Siren snarled at the shocked Rainboom. She stepped closer her weak breath puffing in the later winter chill.

"You should have just killed us! Tell me Unicorn, in all your spoiled time at the palace did you not once pick up a book on magical creatures!? Sirens need to feed, we need magic to maintain ourselves. This world had none, so we worked around that and drew on our old ways. But you, YOU took that!"

"You look half dead, its been only a few months how..."

"Silence you bitch! Without the power of our gems we couldn't absorb energy, of any kind. Without the power of song our spells broke, we lost everything. Our home, our savings, everything! We have been living on the damn street, and without the ability to suffice our..hunger...well, you can see what your handy work has done."

From behind the screeching women, appeared two other forms. Both much taller, but just as diminished. Neither stepped into the light, but silhouette's showed enough of who they where. Shifting her gaze from Adagio to Sonata and Aria's shadowy forms, she gulped and took a bit of a defensive stance.

"You could have come to us, to me! I understand the place you where in, I would have helped...ugh!"

The sound of the slap rang out into the freezing wind. Adagio pulled back her over grown finger nail clad hand and hissed as Sunset recoverd.

"You left us to starve to death! Help? HELP?! The only thing you have ever done is ruin my plans, hurt my Sisters and left us to die!!"

With fingers to her burning cheek, the high school senior growled.

"Damn you Adagio, don't you see. If I had known, I would have..."

"What? Spare us, let us rule your world?"

"Of course not."

"Then what?!"

Stepping forward she felt the shifting of the two forms behind they're leader, with hands lowered and showing no threat, Sunset put her arms around the smaller female and ignored the horrible scent pouring off the street washed Siren. She held her hug, and ignored the kicks and struggles from the now screaming immortal.

"I would have shown you another way. They're is magic in this world Adagio Dazzle. The magic of friendship."
---
"DAGI!!!!"

Snapping from her revere, the wife of Sunset Shimmer returned to gripping her lovers hand. She whisperd soothing words and tried not to cry in her own bone crushing pain. Adagio ran her free hand over the girth of her mates belly, it trembled and jerked under her touch.

"Soon mlove, soon our little one will be here. You must be strong, you are Sunset Dazzle! You are MY wife, my mate, my true love. I am here, we are here, you can do this!"

Agony filled blue eyes snapped open, sweat and saliva splayed from her lips. She looked to her wife and let off a frail smile and nod, but only could for a moment before returning to her howls of pain.

It was about this time that Adagio spied a grey haired man, leering between her wife's legs. A feral growl purred from her throat before she realized that it was the doctor. Standing, her once gentle petting of heavily fattened middle of Sunset, soon turned protective.

"You going to make this happen or what Doctor?"

The aged man leaned back, he spoke through his mask and goggles with relaxed calm.

"Mrs. Dazzle, your wife is fully dilated and in the process of giving birth, perhaps you might tend to her and allow me to help bring this life into the world."

"Listen here you pretenses prick..."

"Adagio, please."

Turning to the soft whimper of her exhausted mate, the Siren snorted, cast one last hate filled gaze before she lowered her self back to her seat and returned to the attention of her larger love.

"When you are ready Mrs. Dazzle...push."

Author's Notes:

So I was pondering how to give away the "how did these two get together" story, I figured scent was a good idea.

Many might not know just what a delivery room smells like...ya...Tv really doesn't prepare you. Trust me when I say, I made no exaggeration here. I thought it clever to tie in the stink of a birthing female with what one who had lived on the streets for the better part of a year would smell like.

eh, I like the results.
