Prologue

An age old fight.

“Alright, we need these Stingers out there as soon as possible. Let’s move it, people.” The commander kept barking orders at the pilots and flight mechanics as they prepared their ships for launch. The battle had begun so fast. Just when it seemed like the Imperial fleet was all alone, they struck. The Swarm. As soon as their ships appeared, firing their weapons upon the surprised Imperial fleet, all Hell broke loose.

Up at the command bridge, things were much calmer. Men worked at their stations, furiously typing into their consoles, trying to maintain the shields and weapons accordingly. Even the captain of the commander vessel, Captain Wolfe, was calm while delivering his orders. The men at the consoles occasionally shouted off in the direction of the captain. “Sir, we’re losing power in Sector B7.”

“Alright, get a crew working on that. Get the backup capacitor online. I want those shields fully functional. The Swarm will run out of Locusts eventually.” The captain responded within a moments notice, without any hesitation. The captain knew his ship better than even the engineers who designed it.

The battle, however, was not looking good. The Empire’s battlecruisers were being depleted and the swarm still had 2 hive ships. The pilots of the Locusts had begun to realize that their weapons were disabled and useless while those shields were online. So, instead of wasting their time trying to shoot at the ship while it was immune, they began to use their own ships as weapons. They’re suicidal strike against the Imperial cruisers were doing quite some damage. It was only a matter of time before those Locusts found out how to take out the shields.

The Imperial fleet, however, would not give up. They had two flagships, the Commodore and the Daedalus. The Captains of the ships made an excellent team. Captain Wolfe had his men gather as much information about the situation of the battle. Captain Wolfe analyzed this information and sent it off to Captain Greene of the Concord. Captain Greene took all the information and made the tactical decisions.

“Sir, shall we send Captain Greene .”

Captain Wolfe nodded. “Alright, let me through”

Captain Wolfe stood before a small stand that held a small metallic disk. A low hum could be heard from the disk as a blue holographic image appeared above the disk. The image was that of Captain Greene. His clean cut hair and his proper uniform distinguished him from most soldiers. He stared at Wolfe intently. “Wolfe, as you might have gathered, things aren’t looking so good. The Locusts are starting to do quite some damage. From what I’ve gathered, we’ve only been able to knock out 20% of the Locusts. If this onslaught continues, our ships won’t last much longer. We’ve got to knock out the Hives and those Beetles. It’s our only hope of making it through. What do you propose we do to fix this problem?”

“We use one of our cruisers to ram into the Hive. We can provide some support with our Incisors, but we need to take out some of those Beetles. If we can destroy one of those hives, victory might be obtainable.”

Wolfe shook his head. “There’s no way we could get one of our cruisers in there. The Hive’s defenses would tear it to shreds. We would need a miracle in order to take out that Hive ship.”

Greene suddenly laughed. “Well, I think we got our miracle. Simmons, play the hologram for Captain Wolfe.”

Captain Wolfe watched the hologram. It switched from the hazy image of Captain Greene to the image of one of the Hive Ships. Shield piercing rounds could be seen pounding the shields, causing the shields to fail. The image turned back to Captain Greene. “Now, Wolfe, we’re having our ships direct fire on the nearest Beetle. I’m going to break through the enemy lines.”

Wolfe stood in shock. “The Hives ships will still destroy you. Besides, only one of their shields are down. I can’t have you go in there.”

Greene shook his head. “I’m sorry, captain, but it has to be done. I’m sure you will be fine without me.”

The hologram began to fade. Wolfe smashed the metallic disk. “Damn it, I want you to get me a radio signal to Greene ASAP!”

“Sir, they’ve blocked all transmissions.”

Wolfe sighed. “That crazy bastard.”

Wolfe stood in silence as he heard the news of the destruction of the Beetle. Greene made his move. He broke through the line of Beetles, getting close to the defenseless Hive ship. Their weapons began to pound against the Daedalus’s shields. Captain Greene laughed crazily. “Ramming Speed!”

The Daedalus began to race towards the Hive ship. When the Daedalus was just about to ram into its final destination, Captain Greene cried out, “Your fleet is bad, so you should feel bad!”

The Daedalus crashed into the Hive ship, sending shrapnel flying. The Daedalus severed the Hive ship in half, destroying it. However, the attack also managed to crush the Daedalus in the process.

Suddenly, a voice cried out. “Sir, there are abnormal readings coming from Star 4306. These readings are off the charts. I don’t know what’s going on, but it can’t be good.”

Captain Wolfe shook his head. “We checked Star 4306 before we got here. It’s stable. You’re probably getting interference from the Swarm’s technology. Try to get a holo-scan of the Hive ship. We need to see if we can get a readout of their systems. We might be able to find a weakness in their systems.”

The man sat down and began to type at his console again. Within moments, several other men jumped up. “Sir, the readings aren’t interference. We’ve been able to isolate the Swarm’s energy readings, and they seem stable. The readings Harris picked up were coming from Star 4306. We’re trying to isolate the star’s radiation to determine if it will just be a solar flare.”

Wolfe walked towards the window of the Command Bridge and looked out at the Battle ensuing before him. He watched as a lone Stinger tried valiantly to fight off several Locusts that were attempting to attack the Command Bridge. He watched the Stinger use evasive maneuvers and doge the Locusts attacks. Wolfe watched the stinger until something caught his eye. It was off in the distance. He gasped. “Harris, forget the scan of the Hive ship. I need you to get me readings on Star 4306 now.”

Captain Wolfe walked over to a small glass monitor that faced the window looking out into space. On it appeared a small graph showing the energy readings coming from Star 4306. Wolfe took a step back. The energy readings were off the charts. The last time Wolfe saw readings like that...

“Connors, contact the other ships. Tell him that we need to get the fleet out of here. Harris, we need to divert power into the engines. We need to get out of this Star System as fast as possible.”

A man in a white uniform looked at Captain Wolfe with vivid curiosity. “Sir, why do we have to get out of here. We should stay and fight. If we could defeat this Swarm fleet, then we could rid the galaxy of one of the greatest Swarm fleets we’ve ever encountered!”

Captain Wolfe shook his head rapidly. “I don’t have time for this, Conners. There won’t be a fleet to fight if these readings are right.”

“Sir, what are we running from?”

Captain Wolfe opened his mouth to answer, but said nothing as he saw a flash of light out of the corner of his eye. Within seconds, a bright light erupted into the Command Bridge, enveloping everything in light. People tried to shield their eyes, but the light seemed to seep down into their brains, making all their thoughts as blind as their sight. Captain Wolfe had been right.

They were witnessing a Supernova.

“Guys, let’s hurry up. A total solar eclipse only comes once every 360 years. I don’t want to miss it.” Twilight looked up at the sky, looking towards the sun. The solar eclipse would occur any minute now. Twilight didn’t want to miss a second of it.
