The Once And Now
Chapter 1
The moonlight glared off the crystal white snow, illuminating everything in sight with a mesmerizing glow. One thing illuminated by this light was a unicorn colt. His fur, as white as the surrounding ice crystals. His eyes, a piercing blue which seemed to mesmerize the viewer. And his cutie mark, a sun peeking over the horizon. Though his fur was thick the air still seemed to nip at him, which in turn made him let out a small shiver. “Berrrhhh, I think Celestia was wrong about the Lunar guards coming this way-” His sentence was cut short by a bright flash of light which caused the white unicorn to be temporarily blinded, but that didn't stop him from levitating his spear high into the air. “Halt! Who goes there!?” He asked as his vision began to return.
When his vision returned he began to notice the warmth that had taken over his body, and the feel of wet grass at the sole of his hooves. When the steam finally cleared the white unicorn saw a purple winged pegasus colt in the sitting position of somepony who had just been knocked off their flanks. The Unicorn quickly levitated his spear to the pegasus’ throat. “Who are you?” He asked the purple colt in a deep and threatening tone.
The pegasus was ignoring the question and asked his own. “What year is it? Where am I?” He didn't get the answers he was looking for but instead a small puncture in his neck where the spear was pressed slightly harder against his body.
The unicorn spoke up again. “I said who are you?” this time he said it with a much deeper tone. The pegasus sat still with a dumbfounded look on his face. The unicorn was preparing to ask again until the pegasus answered his previous question.
“I-I’m Star Blazer. I’m looking for Shine Bright, I’m from the future.” Now it was the unicorns turn to looking dumfounded. He levitated the spear away from Star Blazers neck but he never dropped his guard in the process.
“I’m Shine Bright…”

A young pegasus was running around an indoor track, his fur a dark purple, his eyes a rare type of blue, his mane and tail had blue and white stripes, and his cutie mark was a yellow star encased in a yellow circle. He continued to run until speakers sounded. ‘Good job citizen. Power is strength and strength is required for citizenship. Your country salutes you for your efforts Star Blazer’
Leaving the track a young unicorn mare passed him. Her fur was a mint green And the speakers sounded again. ‘Good job citizen. Power is strength and strength is required for citizenship. Your country salutes you for your efforts Lyra Heartstrings.’ Star Blazer took no time in leaving the workout facility. He was in a rush, he wanted to meet up with his mare friend before he had to leave for work.
When he finally left the facility he was greeted with the day’s full moon. He loved the full moon, it allowed for his work to be so much easier. Due to the fact that night lasted twenty-four hours the only light was usually the light that the magically enchanted gems offered. He continued to gallop down the street until he can upon a small bench with a lone blue unicorn mare on it. “Hey Quick Quill I’m sorry that I am late. The tests took longer than anticipated.” Quick Quill turned her head to greet the oncommer.
“O it’s fine Star it's not like the river is gonna go anywhere.” She then levitated Star Blazer a cup full of what he could only assume was coffee. Quick Quill or QQ as Star calls her has been his marefriend for around two years now and since the day they met they continually meet up at the small secluded bench that overlooked the ever winding river. Star took the cup in one of his hooves and proceeded to sit by QQ. “So how were the tests?”
“O you know, nothing this muscular piece of premium cut colt couldn't handle.” His comment elected a small chuckle from the adjacent mare.
“Well obviously not well enough, you took too long. I have to be heading to work in about five minutes.” Quick Quill complained to her lover. This caused Star to let out a groan in anger.
“Five minutes!? That’s hardly anytime!” He threw his hooves into the air for exaggeration.
“Yah I know, but i’ll see you after work so be happy about that.” She got up from her place on the bench to go nuzzle her lover.
“Yah, yah. You enjoy your work, i’ll see you tonight.” He said to the now parting unicorn. once she was out of sight he let out a long unrested sigh. “Why i’d best be gettin’ to work as well.” He then took flight to go to the outskirts of the city.
Star Blazer worked at the Sun Maker factory. His job was to transport the magically enchanted crystal to the nearby farms so they could grow their crops. To be a Sun Maker was a rather prestigious position, it paid well, it was well respected, and without it everypony would starve. Though the job was rather strenuous, no matter what department you were in. The unicorns expended huge amounts of energy to power the stones, and the transporters (pegasi, and Earth ponies) had to transport the cargo long distances.
“Let’s see here, what sector is mine?” Star walked over to the large chart and found his number. “Let’s see 17031, ok im at district 20538?” He pondered the number while also putting a hoof to his chin. “O horse apple, isn't that the dump town in the valley!?”
He was muttering to himself as he went and retrieved his cart, that was filled to the brim with glowing crystals. He strapped himself on and took flight. He left the city of Staliongrad and made his way to the valley town 20538. One thing that made this sector the worse is that it was the furthest away, nearly a two hour flight with half a ton. The town actually should belong to the factory in Canterlot, but somehow Canterlot was able to pawn it off onto the Staliongrad division.
After a long and excruciating flight, Star landed in the center of the backwater town. “Ponyville, you pain in my flank, who would want to live here anyway? I mean there's nothing here?” He began to gallop to the nearest farm ‘Sweet Apple Acres’ while still muttering ill things about the town. But to his luck he noticed a large red Earth pony pulling an empty cart. Maybe my job will be easier than anticipated. He thought to himself as he yelled for the pony.
Star galloped up to the massive colt. “Hi, I have a delivery of Sun Crystals for the Apple family. Are you a member capable of speaking on their behalf to take this Crystals?”
“Eeyup,” was the only reply the stallion gave. Sweet this place will take like half of the barrels and I won't have to carry them all the way to the barn house.
“Great! Can I get you to sign here?” After a quick signature and half the barrels unloaded Star made his way to the next three farms.

The day went by slow, but sure enough he made it through the work day, even though Star often thought he wouldn't be able to. He left to go to the river side bench he had been at earlier. Once he arrived he was immediately greeted with warm coffee and an even warmer smile from his marefriend. “So, how was work?”
“I got stuck with Ponyville, but all in all not bad. You?” He said in between sips of his coffee. QQ then let out a dramatic sigh.
“O! You couldn't even begin to fathom the stress I was under!” Star Blazer raised an eyebrow in response. This caught QQ’s eye as she began to giggle. “You know, nopony wants to rent books anymore so it was slow, like always.”
“Well, we should get going, curfew is in an hour.” Star then lead the way down the street. The path they took to get back to his apartment was usually quiet but today was one of the rare occasions. Maybe a block or two from his appartement Star and QQ were stopped by a bat guard. Peering around the bat guard the two could see an elderly couple being dragged out of their house and forced into an armored carriage though the colt was able to shout in a weak and trembling voice “REMEMBER US!” right before he was shoved into the carriage along with his wife. Quick Quill the galloped around the guard to be stopped by Star Blazer.
Unfazed by Star holding her back she shouted at the captian of the small armed group of bat guards. “Hey what’s going on here!? Why were they arrested!?” The female captian was preparing a speech when she was cut off by the speakers hanging from the lamp posts. ‘Working is strength, and strength is required for citizenship.’ With the guard nodded her head and left with her soldiers.
Star pulled QQ back towards him. “ARE YOU CRAZY!? Do you want to go back to Good Citizenship school?” Star was caught off guard when QQ flung around to stare him in the eyes.
“You know it’s not right Star! You know it’s not right.” But after a short pep talk Star Blazer was able to calm her down and they were back on their way to Star’s apartment. Once outside the door, the speakers sounded again. ‘Know your neighbor like you would know yourself. Knowledge is strength and strength is required for citizenship.’ As soon as they walked in Quick Quill pushed Star onto the bed and began kissing his neck…
The two laid on the queen size mattress, sweaty and tired. Neither talked and the room was quiet except for the heavy painting of the two lovers. Quick Quill was the first to break the silence. “If the past was changed, would we still meet and fall in love? Would everything be different, if the world was happy?”
“What do you mean? We are happy, happy and strong right.” Star said in a very monotoned voice.
“You know what I mean Star.”
“Nothing would make me happier than to change this world, nothing.” Star’s voice dripped with sternness.
“How can you say that? How do you know the world would be better?”
Star then got up and began to make his way to the bathroom. He stopped at the door, peering into the poorly lit latrine. “Because the world was happy when it was different.”
Once out of sight Quick Quill’s mind started to race a mile a second. “How does he know the world was happy. He hasn't read a real history book, nopony has.” She began to scan the room, looking for something that didn't belong. She then reached her hoof under the bed and grabbed ahold of something. Looking at it she could tell that it was a very, very old book. Opening it she quickly discovered that she couldn't read whatever language it was written in. She heard the toilet flush, she then quickly stuffed the book into her saddlebags. When Star opened the door Quick Quill ran up to him. “Come with me now!”
“But what about curfew!?” Before he could say another word QQ pushed him out the door of the apartment.
“Follow me!” And he did. They have been walking for sometime now, always sticking close to the shadows to avoid being spotted. The night was quiet other than the occasional speaker announcement. ‘A clean city is a clean mind. Your city is a part of you, your city is made from you. And yes, you are responsible,’ The speaker put a lot of emphasis on the last three words, as if he knew that Star was breaking the law. They continued until they reached a dead end alley way.
Quick Quill’s horned flash and then she turned to Star. “Run!” And so he did the end of the alley way seemed to open up and the brick wall became an elevator. Once inside the doors closed. “Whew, that was close. It only comes to surface Twice a day on rotating schedules.” Star stood quiet, unsure of what to say. The elevator ride seemed to have taken forever but it came to a rather abrupt stop. Once the doors opened again Star saw a guard wearing bright golden armor. He raised his spear at Star Blazer but lowered it when QQ said “It’s cool, he’s with me.” She then turned to Star and waved her head as a singnal to follow.
“This is the only place in Staliongrad where the heat and magical signatures can be hidden from above.... It took almost two decades to build piece by piece.” She whispered to Star Blazer.
“Build wha-” He was cut off as a colt approached them.
“Quick Quill! What is HE doing here!?” She gestured at Star for emphasis
“He’s safe, and there’s a reason I swear. Call a meeting now.”
"Impossible!! We have a test scheduled in twenty minutes. I asked you what is HE doing here?"
"Hey, man i’m right here what's the problem?" Asked Star approaching the colt until Quick Quill held up a hoof to stop him.
"Just call a meeting Octavian. I'll explain later." QQ said levitating the book she stole from Star Blazer’s and handing (hooving?) it to Octavian.
Octavian's magic engulfed the book. He brought it closer to his face to study it. "Is that...? MEETING!!!"
