To say that today would be a good day would be an understatement. I was the guest of honor at Scootie's school this month and I finally had enough time in my schedule to go to her school house and spend the day with her. I call her my little Scootie because Dash calls her Squirt.
"Dad? Are we almost ready?" Scootaloo asked with her backpack on. "Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom are waiting for us."
"I'M IN THE WORKSHOP!" I yelled to her up above. "DON'T FORGET YOUR BREAKFAST!"
"Twilight already got me fed." Scootaloo said as she came down into the workshop and stared at her scooter. "What are you doing with my scooter!?!!?" She asked hysterically.
"I'm improving it." I said casually.
"That generally doesn't bode well all the time. Remember when you 'improved' the washing machine?"
I rolled my eyes. "It's not my fault that it turned into a sentient time machine and went to go fight in a galactic war."
"We had to hand wash our clothes for a week before the insurance company found a claim for us." Scootaloo said.
"I could have bought another one but we're saving up for your and your siblings college fund." I told her. "Besides what I did to your scooter is a lot less worse."
"So what did you do?" She asked.
"I made it a bit more aerodynamic, a bit heavier, and made it out of metal to be more durable."
"Why would you make it heavier?" She asked.
"You use your wings to push yourself along right?"
"Yeah?"
"It can help strengthen your wing muscles, more effort means more exercise, and more exercise means that your wings will get stronger and stronger until you can lift yourself off the ground." I smirked.
"R-Really?" She asked.
"I see the way you look at mom in the sky having a blast with her tricks." I said. "I know you want to be up there with her. But baby steps first, can go a long way much later. Now come on, we wouldn't want to be late."
**********
I had Applebloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo in tow with me on the way to the school house.
"Mickey, you do know that you're going to be the teacher today right?" Applebloom asked.
"Yeah." I said.
"So do you have a lesson plan?" Sweetie Belle asked.
"I'm more of an interactive teacher."
"So what does that mean?" Scootaloo asked.
"It means more discussing and less assignments." I said.
"So no writing things down?" Applebloom asked.
"Look girls, it may seem impossible but I was in school just as you were not so long ago. I LOATHED assignments, so I'll go easy on you kids."
"Thank Faust." Scootaloo said.
"Who?" I asked.
"She's the pony who created the universe." Applebloom said. "Didn't they teach you that in school?"
"No. That what church was for, not really a fan of it. Though I did meet god once."
"Who's god?" Sweetie asked.
"The guy who created my universe and all of the multiverse." I said. "I met him on a train, that or he was a crazy ass hobo. Either way I don't know." The kids ran into the class as Cheerilee met me outside the building.
"Do you know what you're going to talk about?" The school teacher asked me.
"I was going to take some questions and give some answers, delve into some of the culture of different humans and so on."
"Okay good. If you need any help just ask." She smiled and led me in. "Good morning class!"
"Good morning Ms. Cheerilee." The students replied as if they had practiced that.
"Today we have a special guest with us today. He is Equestria's only human and he will be your guest teacher for today!" She smiled and the kids looked on. "So if you will. Mr. Young you have the floor."
I stood up. "Thank you." I grabbed a piece of chalk and wrote on the board. "My name is Michael Frank Young. You may call me Mr. Young for today, and today I will be teaching you all the things I know about humans." I wrote my name and the word Humans on the board and underlined it twice. "Are there any questions that you would like to ask?" I said and a little girl raised her hand. "Yes miss?"
"Twisth." She said and I looked to Cheerilee.
"Her name is Peppermint Twist, she has braces so it's hard for her to speak." She whispered to me.
"Yes, Miss Twist?" I said.
"What are humansth like?"
"That's a very good question. Let me ask you something. Do you have a cutie mark?"
"Yesh."
"Does anypony else have the same mark as you?"
She scratched her head for a bit then shook her head. "No."
"You see Miss Twist. There is a phrase that humans like to use, no two people are alike."
"What does that mean?" Another student asked.
"What it means is that no matter how you look at a person and how you look at another person, even if they seem so similar, they will never be the same." The kids awed at that. Then one kid raised her hand. "Yes?"
"Do humans get cutie marks?" She asked.
"Nope." I said and everyone looked at me.
"It isn't polite to lie to children Mr. Young." Cheerilee said.
"I'm not lying." I said plainly.
"Then how do you know what you want to be or want to do?" Cheerilee asked.
"You gotta find that out for yourself, see the thing with humans is that there is no set of instructions that we're given when we start out in life. We don't get cutie marks which means that one person could go their entire life without knowing what they were meant to do." I said. "But occasionally there is a thing that people come to realize that they know how to do it and that they love to do it. Which brings up another phrase from humans. Do what you love, don't love what you do. Can anyone explain to me what that means?"
"It means that even though the thing you love to do may seem weird or crazy that you shouldn't let anypony shoot you down because you like to do it." Scootaloo said.
The rest of the day was filled with more questions and more answers and then there was recess. I stood outside watching the kids play then two little girls came up to me. "Excuse me Mr. Young?" I looked down to see a pink filly and a gray filly.
"Yes?"
"If humans don't get cutie marks then have you figured out what you love to do?" The pink filly named Diamond Tiara asked.
"That's a good question, and to be honest with you. I don't know, I love my life as is right now. I don't care what anypony thinks is wrong with me. I like me, and that's all that matters. Does that answer your question?"
"Yeah I think so. You're Scootaloo's dad right?"
"Yes."
"I want to apologize to her and her friends."
"Why's that?"
"Because I've been a bully to them and what you just said made me realize that I shouldn't let what anypony thinks of me be what defines me as a pony."
"Trouble at home?" I asked.
"Yeah." She sighed.
"Talk to your teacher, she's there to help."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome sweetheart." I patted her head and she went to go apologize after that the rest of the day went smoothly and we got out soon after.
Cheerilee looked at me. "You're so good with the kids."
"Ah well, I'm a child at heart."
"You should be a teacher full time."
"There's a lot of things I could be and there's a lot of things I would be, but I wouldn't be me if I were anything else."
"You're welcome to come back at anytime if you want to teach again, just let me know ahead of time."
"No problem. I'll see you around." I took Scootie with me and headed home.
