Chapter 55: Act III, Chapter 8: The Battle of The Subterrains

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Alex fast-roped into the Subterrains, which were now bursting with gunfire.

He saw himself back in Area 51, falling with the helicopter then fast-roping inside, only to be met by splinters of lead. Before any of this. Before RWBY, Before Vanoss and his crew, before even before the ponies.

His mind snapped back into reality the second his boots hit the ground. Dual-wielding Adenien Sub-machine Guns that ripped his enemies into fleshy pieces as soon as they met them. Next in line were Blake and Yang, who slammed into the ground relatively unharmed and returned fire. The rest of his battalion went in around the same time they had. The White Fang soldiers scrambled in panic, as though they weren't expecting an attack of that magnitude.

"Fix bayonets and move up!" Locust ordered.

"Iliad Operators, Blow a hole large enough for the Paladins! We don't got all day!" Alex commanded.

'Roger that, Bunker Busters inbound, ETA; 2 minutes.' An operator on the Illiad replied.

"Yang! Nora! I need you two to handle heavy armor! Nothing in or out of these tunnels! Pyrrha, I need you close by, make sure they don't get swarmed!" He ordered.

"Got it, Alex!" Yang smiled at him.

As he continued his onslaught, Nora poked his shoulder.

"You sure you aren't interested?" She asked, turning to the golden-haired huntress.

"Not the best time for these questions." Alex grumbled.

"Watch your back! We don't need you getting shot before capturing one of these assholes!" Kat shouted.

"Snipers! 11 and 1 o'clock! High!" Mako called out.

"Icarus 0-1, have you made it to the satellite yet?!" Alex asked through the radio.

'Affirmative, Admiral. We're currently nearing the target. What's your ETA on the Subterrains?'

"We've already started the assault!!" He yelled back.

'Just as I figured. Hell-jumpers are guarding the damn thing.'

"Do what you can! I'll handle the mess down here!" Alex replied before changing the channel on the radio.

'Admiral. We've identified Omicron and Sigma at the central building.' Ren said.

"Confirm visual!" Alex commanded.

A video feed opened at the top-right corner of his HUD, a flash of black and red spearing through some of the Ryders and a few dead Atlesians with shards of glass in their faces.

"That's them." Blake suddenly, and rather quietly, stated.

"Let's move out!" Alex nodded. The two were followed by the rest of Alex's Fire-team and the Princess.

"What the?! They got Spider Droids down here!" Blast gaped. He was right. A massive Atlesian Spider-Droid, about as tall as a small building with twice the firepower of a tank suddenly shot various missiles from two launchers at it's sides.

"Get down!" Twilight commanded as the others avoided the missile barrage.

"Ponyfeathers! They have White Fang markings!" Rainbow spat.

"I have a plan!" Ember said, whispering her idea to the rest of the team through their protected channels.

'Have Blast Radius aim rockets at the Droid's leg joints and immobilize it. We can take out the machine's weapons after that, and Alex could safely short the Droid's circuits.'

Blast pulled out two Grenade Launchers, firing both at the Spider Droid's front most leg.

"Twilight, if you can, Rip the thing's leg off! It's hanging by a thread!" Alex ordered.

"Right!" She used her magic to surround the thing's lower front leg, as well as it's missile launchers, and pulled all three parts cleanly off the robot, removing the missiles and sending them towards the monstrous machine.

The large explosion cracked the ceiling of the large cave, that crack extended to the bottom wall. Suddenly, something large bashed itself against the crack, and Alex figured it was likely either a very large Deathstalker or a massive amount of Beowolves.

"I don't like the sound of that!" Rainbow shuddered.

"Take care of 'em! I'll deal with the HVTs." Alex ordered.

"I need to take care of Adam!" Blake indignantly scowled.

"Oh, right. Come on!" He ordered, charging off towards Ren's checkpoint with the black-haired Faunus not far behind.

Alex then heard a very loud 'Boom', and suddenly, the whole ceiling of the Subterrains caved in, sending large hunks of rock downwards and pouring sunlight into the otherwise dark caves.

'Admiral, we're sending Fong and the other Paladins, have you apprehended the Inquisitors yet?'

"If I did, we'd all be on our way back." Alex bluntly and sarcastically replied.

'Er... Understood, sir..'

Alex was immediately met by a boot to the chest.

He fell flat on his back, rolling to one side to get back up, only to see Sigma, Omicron, and another, much taller figure.

He couldn't see exact details because it was so dark, but he knew that this person was wearing a black uniform.

"Alex! Are you.." Blake's voice trailed off upon the realization of what had happened.

"Hello again. How long has it been since we last saw each other? 6 months? 7?" Omicron asked mockingly.

"Adam."

"Oh, I see you've brought us a... friend." He said that last word full of scorn and disrespect.

"Up yours!" Alex coughed.

"Now now, Omicron. Allow me to introduce myself. You have heard of the Alpha Inquisitor, haven't you, Walker?" The dark figure standing in the center asked, walking into the light.

There, Alex could see more details on the man. He was wearing black armor, but it was also adorned with brushed steel and a billowing black cape. The helmet covered his entire head, and left no opportunity for identification aside from the small slit that revealed piercing blue eyes, bloodshot and scarred horribly.

"You... You're the one who wants me dead the most, I take it." Alex cleared his throat.

"Don't make any assumptions, kid." Sigma scorned.

"Cute. It seems Sigma and the Catalyst have a little bad blood. She killed a friend of yours? A close friend of yours?" Alpha scoffed.

"You son of a bitch." Alex narrowed his eyes.

Alex lashed out at the Alpha, only for his wrist to get grasped by the cold gauntlet Alpha was wearing. He was pulled upwards, punched hard in the groin, and was thrown about 40 feet back. He skidded on the rough stone below, badly scratching his armor.

"Are you okay?" Blake asked him.

"Aack.. He punched me in the dick.. Why? Why did he punch me in the dick?" Alex's legs shook uncontrollably in agonizing pain.

"Something wrong, Alexander?" Alpha chucked to himself as he pulled out a heavy sword that looked like a cross between a Zanbatō and a Zweihander, both edges of the blade looked wickedly sharp. Even the tips of the cross-guards were sharpened.

"Blake! Get Adam! I'll deal with these two!" Alex yelled.

She nodded before striking Omicron, locking blades with the murderous White Fang swordsman.

"Unwise to say the least," Alpha shook his head pitifully, "Consider this an evaluation of your power. Sigma! Kill him!"

"With pleasure." Sigma summoned both of her blades, erupting in flames before revealing the deadly blades.

"Okay, this shit again." Alex scoffed, unsheathing Blitzklinge.

Alex charged at Sigma, locking blades with his old enemy before kicking her in the side. Using the distraction, he punched Sigma in the throat before attacking with his blade again.

His blade was blocked by Sigma's as she leapt above him, flipping and slashing him in the back.

Relatively unaffected, he allowed the Blitzklinge to shift into it's revolver form, shooting a few rounds at the Inquisitor. She blocked them effortlessly and grasped his left leg, sharply yanking it up, causing Alex to fall flat on his chest.

He swept a leg under the Inquisitor and tripped her, grasping the back of her head before charging and bashing it once on the cave wall.

She elbowed him hard in the groin, causing him to buckle in pain, giving her an opportunity to weaken his armor. She set a glyph right in front of her hand, firing a beam of flame that singed his backside and forced him into the wall, leaving a burning hole in the armor.

He fired once more. This time, the distraction was more effective, dazed as he grasped both of her ankles and pulled her to the ground, before swinging her like a rag doll into the cave wall again.

Enraged, she summoned glass shards, and aimed precisely for his weak spot, each sliver of glass burning in Alex's flesh, he writhed in pain. Infuriated by his agony, he lashed out, punching and kicking at lightning speed. He backed her into a wall, each punch with enough force to shatter a person's skull. She dodged, and his fist made cracked indents into the cave wall.

He shifted the blade back into it's sword form, locking her blades with his own. He set the blade to spin at the Inquisitor, she was losing strength.

She blocked it for about two seconds before breaking off, while she was distracted, Alex grasped her throat, slamming her head onto the cold stone floor.

She staggered up, bleeding profusely, using the last bit of energy to summon one more glass shard. This one burrowed itself into his back before she made it melt inside his body. He writhed as a small cloud of steam billowed from his burnt back. Kicking Sigma in the head in a bout of rage, he knocked her out cold. As she went out, so did the glass.

Alex panted, his wounds still stinging painfully. Alpha chuckled.

"Not bad. Not bad at all." He mocked.

"Save it. If I can take her down with some minor injuries. You'll drop like a f-"

Alex could barely finish his taunt before being thrown into a wall and choked.

"Alex!!" Twilight ran at the scene, horn glowing brightly.

"Finally, the Princess of Friendship arrives to save the child she called a hit on!" He scoffed.

"Alpha!" She scowled.

"As much as I'd love to stay. I have a friend here who is simply dying to meet you! Gamma!" Alpha called out.

Rufio Vincent landed on the ground from a dark recess.

"Finish her. I'm done here." Alpha leaped away, using some jet technology to climb to the top of the hole, he looked down.

"We'll meet again, Alexander!!" He called before escaping.

"Coward.." He coughed, reaching for Sigma.

"She's mine!" Vincent yelled as Alex barely grasped a small chip on Sigma's belt. He tossed her into the recess he came from.

Twilight shot a bolt of violet magic energy at Rufio. Allowing Alex time to stagger back up again.

"We meet at last. Princess Twilight." Rufio laughed.

She lashed out in a flurry of magic attacks. Rufio protected himself with a yellow bubble shield and turned it into a spike, hurling it at her with blinding speed.

"Woah!" She gasped. She fired a few more bolts, even a few rudimentary ice spells to incapacitate him.

"Die!" He yelled.

"Not while my friends are still by my side!" She retorted, firing more complex spells at him.

Rufio was eventually trapped in a cage of Twilight's magic, she fired a bolt of energy designed to knock him out.

He deflected the bolt, instead hitting the recess, and in turn, Sigma.

As Blake and Adam, Twilight and Rufio kept fighting, Alex staggered to his radio.

"Ruby! Weiss! You there?!" He asked, the rods could potentially hit any second now. It could only be a matter of time.

'We're here, Alex.. But Cloudchaser, Flitter, and Russell chose to take out the second satellite.' Weiss sighed in reply, as though she could have done something.

Cloudchaser..? And Flitter? They were dead?!

"Russell?! Come in!! Damn it! No response, Sergeant Majors Leone, Cloudchaser, and Flitter have been Killed in Action." Alex sighed. What about Auklet and Haunting? They had to be okay too, right?

Alex suddenly heard a very loud boom. Looking up in the sky, he saw a large object burning up in Remnant's atmosphere. That satellite, no doubt.

He walked, staring at it before saluting to those who died saving millions of innocent lives.

"Alex! Get Sigma!" Twilight ordered.

She had Rufio being shocked with a magic spell, he twitched uncontrollably and screamed in total pain.

"Alex! Go! Now!" Blake slashed Adam's back as he tried to fight back.

He charged for the woman, before only being able to see red and black. Several inches of armor had been sliced off his chestplate, had Omicron sliced a few millimeters closer, Alex would've been half of what he was already.

"What?! How did I miss?!" Omicron asked, almost baffled.

As Alex ran for Sigma again, he was tripped by the hostile swordsman.

"Why...won't...you...DIE?!!" He slashed his crimson-tinted blade on Alex's chest and back, blood spilling out onto the cave floor.

Alex grasped Adam's neck, sending a powerful electric current through his hand, frying Blake's former master as he struggled to get away.

"He's mine!" Blake yelled at him, kicking Adam/Omicron hard in the face.

Alex leaped upwards onto the recess for Sigma. She was being carried away by a very familiar armored inquisitor.

"Greetings, Catalyst." Beta coldly stared at him, standing up from behind Sigma's wounded, unconscious body.

Alex unsheathed Blitzklinge yet again. This could get ugly.

"Well, well, well.." A man slowly walked in behind him. He was a bit taller than Alex, with black hair and dimmed red eyes. His voice was a bit slurred. Was he seriously drinking at a time like this?

Wait, there was always someone in Evan's group who always buzzed at least once a week.

"Who the f**k..?" Alex backed up, not sure who to point the blade at.

"Calm down, kid. I'm not after you." He replied, arming himself with his own broadsword.

"It's been a long time, Branwen. I was wondering when you'd show." Beta calculatingly greeted.

"Cut the shit, Axil. You know why I'm here." He scowled.

"You know exactly why I'm doing this. I'm trying to save us!" Beta reasoned.

"Is that any excuse for what you did to Summer? To Raven? Or this kid's dad?" He retorted, his voice slurred.

"You know what'll happen if Alexander finds out the location of Kalos Prime. Your nieces will die! Along with the you and rest of these pathetic insurgents." Beta hardened his gaze.

"Are you threatening me, Axil?" The other man asked.

"The real threat is right in front of us! Why do you not see that?!" Beta removed his helmet, allowing it to clatter against the ground.

Beta looked to be in about his early forties, his hair a lighter shade of black than this other man's, but his eyes were stone grey. His face had been badly scarred from previous battles over the years.

"Get the girl, kid. I'll deal with Axil!" The man ordered.

"Like hell I am!" Alex retorted.

"Fools." Beta unleashed a torrent of fire at their direction, the man beside Alex blocked the attacks rather quickly, while Alex merely slid under the branches of flame, slashing Beta's chest from around his navel to the rib cage before kicking him back further into the cave.

"Watch it!" He warned, leaping into the fray and blocking a devastating blow intended for Alex.

Alex took the opportunity and shocked Beta with most of his power. Beta's armor started to glow bright red and even smoke a little underneath his flesh.

Once Alex felt like he had enough electricity flowing through Beta, he stopped. Walking up to him, he kicked him in the side of the head, knocking him out cold.

"Gotta admit. You have some guts, kid. But not enough to deal with what's ahead." The man said as he searched Sigma's belt.

"It's not about having guts. I really don't have another choice." Alex admitted.

"I'll say.." Beta coughed, staggering up.

"Get the woman out of here before she comes to! Now!" He yelled.

Alex ran, grabbing Sigma by the arm before leaping down to the cave floor.

Twilight was getting her flank kicked by Gamma, she was bruised badly and even bleeding. Blake was tiring and it wasn't long before Adam had the advantage.

Adam shot Blake in the leg, who fell over, grasping her bloodied knee in agony.

"We both know there was only one way this could have ended, Blake." Adam raised his sword.

"Blake!!" Yang launched herself towards Omicron in a fit of rage, punching him the chest relentlessly, only for each blow to be blocked by Adam's sword, which he periodically put back in the sheath before Yang began another bout of attacks.

"Die!" Someone yelled from above Alex.

He looked up, only to see a man falling towards him.

Alpha!!

"Back so soon, asshole?" Alex mocked.

Alpha grasped his neck with one hand, choking him to near unconsciousness before throwing him out of the hole.

Alex handed hard on the fields above the Subterrains, coughing up blood.

"It's a shame you're so persistent. It never pays off." Alpha shook his head in mock pity.

"Exactly." Alex retorted, swinging Blitzklinge at Alpha, intending to end this war right here.

Alpha blocked the attack, punching him dead center in the nose, possibly breaking it.

Alex's vision went white as blistering pain shattered through his face as Alpha continued to press on, punching harder than even Applejack could buck, each swing of his weapon more devastating than it's predecessor.

Alex himself kicked Alpha a few times, aiming nowhere in particular, trying all he could to find a weak spot.

Alpha grasped his fist, raising him to the air and charging a punch with electrical energy. Alex could hear the buzz.

"What the?!"

The punch itself sent him skidding fifty feet away from Alpha, who leaped towards him in a single bound, purposefully landing one foot on Alex's chest

"You! Will NEVER! STOP US!!!! WE! CANNOT BE UNDONE!!!" Alpha yelled, kicking Alex harder and harder with each word spoken.

Alex tried to pick himself up, only for Alpha to kick him with enough force to land him on his back.

"What... The hell are you..?" Alex coughed.

"Your worst nightmare, Fa-." Alpha scowled.

"SURPRISE, BITCH!!" Someone shouted.

Alex saw a giant Mech Suit leap out of the giant hole in the ground.

"No one messes with Delirious!" Another mech suit screamed as it fired the Machine Guns on the sides.

Alex saw Alpha dodge the train of machine gun fire, flipping out of their way and smashing the back of Evan's Paladin.

"Vanoss!!" Delirious shot fire another torrent of machine gun fire at Alpha just as Evan's Mech exploded, the owl-masked Canadian flying high into the air, releasing a parachute, and firing a rocket launcher at Alpha.

Alpha dodged the rocket, punching Evan in the throat and kicking him away.

"I got this motherf**ker!!" Delirious screamed, charging at Alpha again. Alpha hacked the legs off the Paladin.

"We'll meet again, Alexander. But know this," Alpha threatened, grasping Alex's neck and holding him at Alpha's eye level.

"You are never safe. I will never stop. I am the one that will keep you up at night. I am the one who will strip you of everything that you have. You have been lucky thus far, but your luck ends here." He kicked him in the chest. Alex coughed as Alpha opened up his own portal, and stopped just in front of it.

"You have been warned." Alpha coldly stated before walking through and closing the portal.

'Alex, we just apprehended Omicron. Sigma awakened and escaped before we could contain her.' Skirmish updated.

"How are Blake and Twilight?" Alex asked. They had to survive. They had to.

'Ms. Belladonna has been critically wounded in the right leg and Twilight's magic levels have depleted to dangerously low levels. Other than that, everyone's okay.' Skirmish replied.

"And Icarus?"

'Ruby and Weiss were the only two that survived the ordeal. Haunting Horseshoe was killed early on in the mission. So was Auklet.'

"Wait. Did you find anyone lately?" Alex asked. Who was that man who attacked Beta?

An Atlas Specialist had orders to help with this attack. She'll be coming back on the Iliad with us. I think she said her name was Winter..' Skirmish replied.

What the hell was she talking about?

"Anyone else?"

'We've captured someone in the Subterrains a while ago, Yang's identified him as her Uncle.' Skirmish said.

"One last thing. Send a medic up here. I got my ass handed to me." Alex ordered.

'Right away, sir!'

After actually watching RWBY Volume 3, I suppose I could write it so that this fits with the original story...
