Chapter 1:Preparation

Viper's POV

The sounds of countless wings buzzing was soothing to me as I overlooked the progress we were making. We had started to build a hive after the 'Canterlot Incident' and were almost finished.Because of Chrysalis' inability to care for the hive I took over and things have been going according to plan ever since.I, Viper, became queen almost a year ago and instead of charging in after a battle we lost, I gave my brood time to heal and of course we needed a place to call home so, we made one.We even had a nymph chamber so we could finally have more changelings. The under-queens produced enough to bring our numbers back up, and I just love going down there to see all my precious little babies.Yes I know, I didn't lay their eggs, but in a changeling hive, the queen is considered the mother to all changelings and I bet Chrysalis didn't even give a flying feather about the nymphs.I snorted at her name, and walked into my chamber.Inside I had few belongings, a bed, a table, and a mirror.I had a few trinckets, but not many. Most of my time I spent making sure my brood had atleast decent living conditions, that included making sure their were nests for the nymphs which was one of my favorite chores. Many of the changelings seemed to have warmed up a lot to me and I have received many compliments from individual changelings. They had extreme loyalty towards me, and to return the favor, I make sure they are all healthy and had this hive started. It was a sanctuary to the brood, and myself as well.

I walked over to the mirror to examine myself.I looked different from the others not just because I'm, queen but also because I'm part pony.I had a light gray, almost white pelt that faded to a darker gray at my tips, and instead of leathery skin I had fur so soft it would make a kitten jealous.I had almost no holes in my legs except for in the back where a large chunk was missing, making it look like my legs were shot with a spit of acid.My wings were not like those of an insects, but that of a pegasus pony.My mane and tale started at a light amber to a deep orange at the tips, and it was slightly  wavey at the ends.My eyes were an array of golden colors one would see in a sunset. And my horn was knothed near the beginning but then curved slightly near the tip and it was as sharp as a blade. And then there  was the trait that got me my name, my noticeably snake-like fangs.I opened my mouth and a drop of golden venom hit the floor. My venom can be both potent and helpful, when golden it is extremely toxic, but when it turns green, it can cure nearly any ailment. However, venom was hard to make, so I only used it in dire situations.Even though I didn't look like it, I was very nice, unlike that cursed Chrysalis. After taking one last look in the mirror I made my way to the table where a chess board sat with little carvings atop it.I sat down and using my magic moved four of the pieces into the center.Three alicorns and one unicorn.Of the alicorns, one was pink, one was a deep blue, and the other was white, whereas the unicorn was purple.I then surrounded them with the pieces that looked like changelings and put one looking like me at the front.I lifted my 'little me' and moved it to make it look like it was walking, it made its way over to the ponies and stood their in the group. And that was what my plan mostly was, to solve this rather peacefully, I don't like it when my changelings get hurt and I certainly don't want to be the cause of their pain.Soon, I thought, soon we will have all the love we need to build our kingdom.

I stood before thousands upon thousands of changelings as I spoke before them,"And until my return I expect my adversary to keep things in check.I assure you that I will return,"I added the last part as I sensed worry pass through the minds of my children.I looked to my 'adversary', who was really a senior changeling well respected by many of the hive and like a parental figure to me.I had known him most of my life, in fact, when I nymph I would sneak out of the chamber to go listen to his stories of the outside world, in which he enjoyed telling. He smiled warmly at me,"Rest assured Vi-Your Majesty."I returned the smile and as the crowd began to disperse back into the hive I made my way to my chamber. On my bed sat a plain satchel which will carry a few things on my into Equestria.I used my magic to open it and levitated various things into it.My chessboard, now folded up, a small bag of chess pieces,my enchanted inkwell, a peacock quill, and a map of Equestria.I slung the satchel over my shoulder and flew to the entrance of the hive, which was in a mountain, and took a last look behind me at the hive, at my beloved brood. It will be a while before I come back.I sent the thought throughout the brood and a small wave of apprehension came back to me.Be safe, our Queen... the brood replied.
