Last Words of a Great Dragon

Chapter 1: Better Places

Better Places

An old groan could be heard in a old cave. A grand purple dragon with long green wings struggled with weak claws to write a last line. Most who would look at the parchment would think it was a will for a dying being. Indeed this was, for the Great Dragon, Spike, these were his last moments. Deep in his belly, he felt his fire dim, everyday he knew it was getting closer to burning out.

He sighed before using his last magic fire to send a letter to a dear friend of his. In his dying shape, he could not fly, he could not eat, and he could hardly see more than ten feet away from his eyes. Spike was not sad at all for his time had came. He lived a long life, filled with love from his friends, and love from his dear wife who had to leave him to help rule New-New-New Equestria. Spike smiled at the fond memories he shared, his mind too old to forget his life when he was but a young hatchling.

Twilight Sparkle sat in a massive crystal castle with her dear friends, discussing laws, and telling tales about their days. Along with her was a small filly who was her daughter. In fact, they all had daughters and sons. Fluttershy, Rarity, and Apple Jack all had sons while Twilight, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie all had daughters.

Suddenly while in the middle of Rainbow Dash's speech, a mystical green flame from all their horns shot out. They all gasped in surprise as it landed directly over the image of where the old library was. It had regrown into a new redwood tree that stood proudly over Ponyville. However, they all soon realized who the letter had came from.

"It's time girls..." Twilight said as she read the note.

Dear my wonderful friends,

I feel it now, my flame is dying. I hear how weak my breaths are, and from my old cave, I cannot move. My bones are weak as my flame, and it is nearing time for me to leave this world peacefully. I have grown to love you all. Even you Rarity the Mistress of Dragons. From you all, I have gained not only powerful friends, but also kind, honest, loyal, funny, generous, and talented. In my time living, I had learned so much from you, I have became so wise.

So as my final wish, I would like to see my sister. She has seen my birth, and only she should see my death. There when she sees me, I will give out my will to her so she can see it through.

Good bye everypony...I will miss you.

Your best friend,

Spike the Hero of the Crystal Empire, Champion of the Dragons, and Honorary Element of Harmony of Bravery

Everypony was silent, unsure how to take the news. Princess Pinkie was not even feeling as though she could smile. While she was glad Spike had sent them a letter after two hundred years, she was saddened at how it was going to be his last. Her hair had lost its magical touch along with the rest of her friends.

"This blows..." Rainbow Dash said, thinking aloud like usual.

"I-...I must agree with Dash here..." Rarity said, her mascara being run off by slow tears. "I...I want to see him...but-"

"Yeah...but she deserves it." Apple Jack said, looking Twilight who was silently crying. "How old is he?"

"Today....he turned 10,023...He's lived twice as long as most dragons..." Rarity said, expert in dragon studies. After she married Spike, she studied dragons for several years. She used magic to hide herself. With her incredible designs, she made a fabric that could hide her entire shape by bending light waves around her or even through her.

"Wow...that's...a-a long time..." Fluttershy said, trying her hardest to not cry, yet a few tears still went down her beautiful yellow face.

"He was the one with us....wh-when we turned into the element princesses..." Rainbow Dash said. "I...I wanted to be a Wonderbolt, he helped me keep track of my training, and helped me get back in shape after I had Storm..." Rainbow Dash relived those happy memories with her favorite dragon friend.

Apple Jack giggled with Pinkie Pie. "R-remember when he kept stall'n Twi so we could decorate the castle for her?" Twilight couldn't help but smile. "H-he tried so hard!"

"And those party cannons? Those went off for weeks!" Dash added, laughing a little.

"How about that time he got hooked on greed? And it was Rarity who brought him back to his senses?" Pinkie asked.

"Man...he was huge then, but not as big as he is now, or when we last saw him..." Dash said with a smile. "I remember when he was just a little guy...he dressed as a dragon....oh the irony..." That caused a few rounds of laughs from the rest of the girls.

"How about that time when we had the second War against the Griffins? We rode into battle on him, firing lasers from our horns..." AJ smiled. "That day we all laughed when it was all over."

"We also mourned for the Griffins who tried to get their families back, but could not." Twilight said. "But...it was fun to ride on his back...wasn't it?"

"Yeah..." The others replied.

IT was quiet for a few long minutes before Rarity spoke up. "Twilight darling...you should go see him before it's too late..."

Twilight sobbed softly, rivers of tears smacking the floor. "I don't want him to go....H-he's my little baby brother!!"

"Then go see him Twilight, it's best for both of you." Fluttershy said softly, resting a hoof on her friend's shoulder to help comfort her.

Twilight's horn began to glow brightly. "Anything you want me to say girls?"

Only three words came from all of them at the same time. "We love you."

With a bright flash, Twilight recalled to the cave from where she placed the mark many, many years ago. The wind was null, the air was thin, very few plants survived this high up, but Spike had chosen this place to be his resting place. She steeled herself up, taking a few deep calming breaths.

She walked in slowly, careful of her hoofsteps over sharp diamonds and amethysts. Gold from the very beginning of the cave was piled high to the roof of the cave. Books, and various other powerful and magical tomes littered the ground. Knowing Spike, Twilight guessed had had them in those places for reasons.

"I smelled you as soon as you walked in." An old tired voice called out. "Welcome to my home Twilight."

Twilight bowed before her younger, yet much taller brother. He was almost as large as the Castle of Friendship. "It's great to see you...even if this is for the last time."

"Yes...it is...come closer, I can't see anymore, but I'd like to know you are by my side when my flame dies."

Twilight slowly walked closer to Spike. She looked at how dull his purple scales looked. His eyes were hazed out, blind he very much was. How he wrote the letter was beyond what Twilight could understand.

"It took you longer than I expected...for you to come." He took a long deep breath. "But I am glad that you came."

Twilight nuzzled her brother. "The girls and I needed a few minutes..."

"Twilight....do not mourn for me. I have lived for a very long time. The magic of friendship helped keep my fire burning bright as long as it has. I have outlived many of my own friends and mates...it is time for me to go."

"I don't want you too....please...." Twilight started to cry, but Spike moved his tale to wipe away her tears with the very tip of it. "Spikey..."

"Twilight....there are many things in this world that I have seen. As wise as I am, I see that there is no getting around death. Even you will die someday, perhaps when the universe becomes too cold, or bounces back to a primeval state of hyper-condensed matter. Death....death is part of nature. Many can avoid death, but not for very long. I have done that, and now, death is standing close."

"I'll still cry..."

Spike nodded his head weakly. "I know, I cannot stop you, only ask that you don't cry. Please Twilight...celebrate my death. Tell Pinkie to throw the biggest party, invite all of Equuis if she has to."

"Where did my little brother go...?" Twilight smiled at Spike. "What happened to him? Who's the wise dragon I see before me?"

Spike couldn't help but chuckle weakly. "He grew up, found a mate, and lived a long, well deserved life. Now...he gets to rest in peace..." Spike lowered his head and closed his eyes. "I have a couple more minutes Twi..."

"No...." Her voice shook with sadness. "Spike...no..."

"But yes...Twi....death is near...my flame is dying..."

"C-before you go....c-can you roar....as loud as you can? I-I can use magic to make it echo across....all of Equestria...."

"Is that what will it take for you to allow me to go?"

"Oh yes please!" Twilight cried with a shout. "Please!"

Twilight's horn lit up, Spike took a deep inhale, and then he Roared!!!

Suddenly his head fell back down and his eyes were nearly closed. Twilight ran over to his head and hugged him tightly. "We love you..."

At last the time had came. Spike released the last breath, the last breath of the powerful dragon he was. Twilight broke out into a sob, crying her eyes out on her dead brother.

"SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
