This is more or less a word for word ponification of H H Monroe's classic short story The Open Window. H H Monroe, who was also known as Saki, was a British author who was considered the master of the short story and went on to influence later authors such as Noël Coward and P G Wodehouse. He died in 1916, so all his works are now out of copyright.
In this story Big Mac has been sent by his doctors to recuperate in a seaside town. Applejack had visited the town several years ago, and knowing his shyness, wrote letters of introduction for him to present to the ponies she knew from the town. He visits a certain Mrs Stableton's house and passes the time talking to her niece while he waits for the mare of the house to meet him.
