Chapter 10: Chapter X: Pies and Cutie Marks

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Consumed with the thought of eating an apple pie, Sapphire was mindlessly charging towards the front door of the farmhouse until she heard Rarity shouting. "Wait Sapphire!" she yelled, causing Sapphire to snap out of her trance as her hooves skid to a halt. Realizing that she lost control, she simply blushed as the other two mares caught up to her. "You really must learn more self-control dear, it's not proper for a lady to always be running off every time a meal is mentioned," Rarity admonished.

"Now hold on there sugarcube, ya can't blame the mare for wantin' a bite of Granny's apple pie. I reckon that it's good for a mare of her build to want to eat some food," Applejack countered.

"I think not darling, many mares would be jealous of Sapphire's lithe frame. That and her meals are already double the amount a lady would normally eat."

"Then ya have to feed the poor lass more often then. Looks like she needs some more food so she can get some more muscle on her bones there."

"I on the other hoof think that I have heard enough ponies commenting on my figure today," Sapphire cut in, annoyed at having her thin frame being brought up again as she rolled her eyes at the two. The two suddenly blushed in embarrassment, realizing that it wasn't polite to have an argument about any mare's figure, especially when said mare is right in front of them.

"I'm rightly sorry for what I was sayin' about ya Miss Rain, I didn't mean to offend ya. How about we just get ya that apple pie I promised ya?"

"I think I'll take you up on that offer Miss Applejack, it's better than waiting for another pony to come around and point out how skinny I am," Sapphire answered, to which the other two ponies nervously laughed as Applejack opened the door to let her guests inside the farm house.

After stepping inside, Sapphire took the sight of the decor of the farmhouse, commenting, "You sure have a pleasant home Miss Applejack."

"Why shucks, that's mighty kind of ya to say, but I would like it if ya just call me Applejack."

"Well, it's only fair since I did ask you to just call me Sapphire," Sapphire replied with a small smile that Applejack returned as she led the two to the kitchen. In there on a counter near an open window, lay a half-dozen baked pies. Taking a sniff of the scent given off by the pies, Sapphire almost hypnotically walked towards the counter, only to be stopped by Rarity's hoof.

"Sapphire dear, you really must learn more self-control to not go after any thought of food, it's becoming more and more of a hassle to control you every time you spot something new to eat," Rarity said, frowning at Sapphire's actions before she continued, "Furthermore dear, I highly doubt that Applejack intends for you to have all the pies, am I correct dear?"

"Rarity has a point there, nor have I ever seen a pony devour half a dozen pies in one sitting unless it was a pie eattin' contest. Except for Pinkie Pie, but she's Pinkie after all."

Giving the two a nervous smile, Sapphire replied, "Sorry about that... I just get carried away so... well, just so darn easily. I can't even tell you why I just acted this way with food all the time."

"It's alright dear, it's probably something that is related to your past. We'll find out more when some of your memories return to you," Rarity responded.

"Well, I reckon that if we don't get some pie in your belly soon, ya'll be losing your self control again Sapphire," Applejack said with a chuckle as she took a few dishes from a cupboard, placing them on the table before grabbing a pie's tin with her teeth and placing it on the table as well.

"Let me help dear," Rarity said as Applejack was taking out some utensils, to which Rarity grabbed with her magic and placed them neatly on the table. She then used a knife to cut the pie into three evenly matched pieces and then placed each slice on the exact middle of the plate. Taking a seat at the table, Sapphire simply stared at the slice of apple pie before her. She started to open her mouth to devour it in one bite, but unfortunately for her, Rarity levitated a fork in front of her. Rarity cleared her throat while she gave Sapphire a look that spoke 'you better not eat like a pig'. Taking the fork in her own magic, Sapphire released a sigh as she cut a piece of her slice with the fork, but she paused when she saw Applejack eating her pie with just her mouth. Shooting Rarity a look, who just simply shrugged and resumed her own dining etiquette. Sapphire continued to eat like Rarity, albeit she ate much faster than Rarity did.

"So how do ya like your pie Sapphire?" Applejack asked after finishing her pie moments before Sapphire had finished, all the while Rarity was only halfway through with her pie.

"It was delicious, you have to give this Granny Smith my thanks for making such a tasty pie," Sapphire answered.

"Now see dear, if you were to devour that slice like you... normally would do, you would never get the wonderful experience of the pie's taste, why, you almost practically... gobbled it up in one bite. If you do that, it would have never touched your tongue otherwise," Rarity admonished, much to Sapphire's frustration.

"Now see here sugarcube, ya gotta give Sapphire some slack, she is missing her memories and I reckon it's a tab bit unfair of ya to always be on her case with the way she eats," Applejack countered.

"Now see here darling, if I don't keep an eye on Sapphire's dining etiquette, then she'll remain in that dreadful habit of hers instead of dining like a proper lady should."

Folding her forelegs onto the table, Sapphire released a moan as she sank her head into her forelegs, all the while the two continued to bicker. It went on for a while until she felt something poking her flank, causing her to snap her head straight up in alarm as she looked to her side. There, she saw a yellow coated filly with a red mane with a cute pink bow in it. "What's goin' on with my sister and Miss Rarity?" the young filly asked.

Looking to the two, who were still bickering, Sapphire looked back to the filly as she dryly answered, "They're just arguing over how I eat."

"Well, that's just silly of them. Oh, I'm Apple Bloom, what's your name?"

"Sapphire Rain, but please just call me Sapphire, not Miss Rain. Hearing ponies call me Miss Rain is getting old fast for me."

Nodding, Apple Bloom then saw Sapphire's cutie mark, to which she asked, "Hey, what special talent does your cutie mark supposed to mean? I never seen a cutie mark like that on a unicorn before."

Raising an eyebrow, Sapphire answered, "Well, I can't be certain, but I think it's supposed to be about my ability to manipulate water easily."

"What do ya mean that you're not certain? Don't ya remember how ya got your cutie mark?" Shaking her head in response, Sapphire watched as Apple Bloom suddenly gasped at her before continuing to say, "How can ya not remember how you got your cutie markā€½"

Apple Bloom's sudden outburst got the attention of the two bickering ponies, who turned to look at the other two as Applejack scolded, "Apple Bloom! That ain't polite of ya to yell at a guest like that!"

"It's alright Applejack, she didn't know I have amnesia. Cut her some slack, I'm not offended at all," Sapphire replied, waving a hoof off to show that she wasn't bothered by that outburst.

"What's amnesia?" Apple Bloom asked, tilting her head at the word she had never heard before.

Chuckling to herself, Sapphire answered, "Amnesia means a pony has lost all their memories from an accident that occurred to them, or something like that I guess." She continued to chuckle as she thought to herself, never thought I would be answering a 'what' question.

"Ya lost all your memories? Even about how ya got your cutie mark?! Why, it ain't right for a pony to not remember that!" Apple Bloom exclaimed, her expression showing pure horror.

Tilting her head, Sapphire curiously asked, "What's wrong with me losing my memory? I mean, it's really a bother for me to lose it all, but you look like I was, well, like a house fell on me or something."

Letting out a laugh, Applejack replied, "Oh, don't mind how she's reacting Sapphire, Apple Bloom just been serious about gettin' her own cutie mark. Hearing somepony forgettin' how they got their own cutie mark would be horrible to her ears."

Nodding her acknowledgement, Sapphire turned back to Apple Bloom as she said, "No need to worry about that Apple Bloom. I might have lost my memories, but I'll remember them eventually, so it's nothing to worry about."

"I sure hope you're right, cause I for one don't want to be losin' my memory of gettin' my cutie mark. When I get one that is."

"Don't worry about that dear, amnesia isn't something anypony gets so easily. As long as you stay away from any dreadful things that could do you serious harm, you should be just fine," Rarity interjected to help calm down the filly. Nodding in agreement, Sapphire's eyes started to drift towards the rest of the pies on the counter, which caused her mouth to water a bit. Seeing Sapphire licking the edges of her lips and noticing where her gaze were looking at, Rarity continued, "Thank you for your hospitality Applejack, but Sapphire and I must now make our leave before... an incident of any kind occurs."

Seeing Sapphire's expression, Applejack chuckled to herself as she replied, "Alright then sugarcube, it was nice to be seein' ya today. Make sure to visit us again Sapphire, it was mighty nice meetin' ya."

Breaking out of her stupor, Sapphire nodded as all the ponies gave their goodbyes before Sapphire and Rarity made their leave. As they trotted down the path back to town, Rarity said, "Now Sapphire dear, while you are a full grown mare, I would like you to promise me that you'll keep yourself under control when you go to visit Applejack or her family by yourself."

Getting miffed at what Rarity said, Sapphire turned her head towards Rarity as she replied, "I know that I need some improvement in my self-control, but I'm not that bad."

"Oh really dear? Can you honestly say that you won't react badly when all the apple trees are baring fruit?" Rarity countered as she stopped to point a hoof at all the apple trees on the farm.

Taking in view of the sheer number of trees around her, Sapphire grimaced as she admitted, "Alright, alright, you got me there Rarity. I promise that before I go to visit Applejack, I will do all I can to stay in control."

"That's all I wanted to hear dear," Rarity said with a satisfied smile as they continued on their way back to town.
