Chapter 1: The Flash

The Flash

The radio on the work bench was playing loud rock music. You watched as box after box came gliding down the rolling track from an almost empty trailer. Working for Wal-Mart as an unloader, this is normal for you. Watch the boxes and take off the ones for the departments you've been put in charge of. Of course, doing this on a daily basis made it extremely boring.

"Another boring day of work." You think to yourself as you watch boxes coming down the line. "Same thing, different day. I seriously need to change something to make my life a little happier. But what?"

Today, you and the rest of your crew were in a hurry. The forecast for tonight was calling for a severe thunderstorm and the truck driver wanted to be on his way before it hit. You manage to get it done in just 2 hours. After getting the rolling track put away for the next day, you go out on your first break. Stepping outside, if you didn't know any better, you wouldn't think there was a storm coming. You look towards the west as the sun starts to set. The sky is clear. The air is warm as you sit on a bike rack enjoying a cold soda.

"Either the weatherman was wrong, or this storm is going to come out of nowhere." you think to yourself as you watch the sun dip behind the surrounding buildings.

Hours later as your shift ends, you notice the wind picking up. Dark clouds fill the already darkened sky. As you get into your truck, the rain starts.

"Oh great. This is the last thing I need." You say out loud as you start the engine.

Your home is 45 miles away from where you work. Living in a small town, the job market is small. So small in fact, you've had to go out of town just to get some sort of income. Under normal conditions, you could get home in just under an hour. But as you pulled out onto the highway, the road was barely visible. You're forced to go slow as you drive down the deserted highway. To get your mind relaxed, you turn on your radio and tune it to the local country station.

Halfway home, you enter what seems to be the worst part of the storm. The wind pushes against your truck as you try to keep it going straight. Bright flashes of lightning light up the sky for brief moments. You can hear the thunder booming across the countryside. As you're going around a curve, a bright flash of yellow strikes your truck. You try shielding your eyes, but the light blinds you. A loud bang hurts your ears. Just as you take your left hand off the wheel to cover your ear, your truck crashes into an object and comes to a dead stop. Your head bounces off the padded steering wheel just as the air bag deploys.

Resting your now aching head on the air bag as it deflates, you grab your right arm. You can feel it bleeding. Not badly bleeding, but enough to where you can feel the blood coming out. You feel pieces of broken glass sticking out. Still blinded by the flash, slightly deaf from the loud bang, and disoriented by your head hitting the steering wheel, you fumble around for the door handle with your good arm. After a few seconds, you find it. The door opens and then falls off.

Collapsing onto the ground, you notice something odd. You aren't being soaked by rain. Instead of laying on hard pavement, you're laying on soft grass. The sounds of thunder are replaced by the chirping of birds. But just before passing out, you hear an unfamiliar voice.

"Woah!" said the voice. "That was awesome!!"

Reaching your good arm out towards the sound of the voice, you try asking for help, but you slip into unconsciousness before you could even speak.

You wake up in a room with walls that appear to look like they're made of crystal. Your memory a bit foggy at first slowly comes back to you. You look down at your arm expecting to see it all wrapped to stop the bleeding.

"What the hell?" you say.

Your eyes widen in surprise as your arm looks like nothing happened to it. Your head feels completely fine as well. Sitting up, you notice  an oddly shaped window. You walk over to it expecting to be looking at the outside of a hospital. What you see makes you step back in a state of disbelief. Everywhere you looked, you saw ponies. Ponies working shop stands, food carts, even some with horns and wings.

You rub your eyes and look again. Nothing changed. You try slapping yourself thinking you're dreaming. Nope. Fully awake and now your face hurts.

"I must be on some strong pain killers to be hallucinating this badly." you think to yourself. "Crystal walls, crystal floors, ponies everywhere. This can't be real."

Just then, the door to your room opens. You look over towards it. Standing in the doorway, a white unicorn with a dark purple mane and matching tail looks in. You notice three blue diamonds on her flank as she walks into the room.

"Oh thank goodness you've finally woken up dear." she said walking toward you.

"I'm sorry." you say as you rub your eyes. "What medicine am I on? Because you look like a talking pony."

She gives you a confused look. " Medicine? You aren't on any medicine silly. I take it you've never seen a talking unicorn before?"

"No I haven't." you say quietly. "Where am I? And why do I look and feel fine after being in a car accident?"

She looks over at you. "Oh, where are my manners? My name is Rarity. And you are in the land of Equestria. More specifically, the town of Ponyville. I'll let Twilight answer your other question. She told me to bring you to her as soon as you wake up. Please come with me." she says.

Walking down the hallway, you notice how everything seems to be made of crystal. "Rarity, why does everything here look like its made of  crystal?" you ask.

"Everything here is made of crystals darling." Rarity explains. "The walls, the floors, this whole castle is made of crystals. Isn't it gorgeous?"

"I'll agree with you on that." you say as you and Rarity approach a large set of doors. "How long have I been out?"

"Almost a week." Rarity replies.

"Well, there goes my job." you think to yourself.

Entering a large room with six large thrones and a little throne next to one of them, you see 6 other ponies standing there. All of them looking at you with amazement in their eyes. Two of them step forward as Rarity joins the others. One of them was small, purple, and had a purple mane and tail with pink and brighter purple stripes. The other was significantly taller, white, and had a multi-colored mane and tail that looked like they were moving on their own. They were the only ones to have both horns and wings.

"Welcome to Equestria." said the tall one. "I am Princess Celestia."

"And my name is Twilight Sparkle." said the small purple pony.

"Nice to meet you." you say while giving a respectful bow.

Looking back up, your eyes wonder all around trying to take in what is happening.

"How did I get here?" you ask. "Last thing I remember is this bright yellow flash before crashing."

Celestia laughs a bit. "I brought you here with my magic." She said while her horn lit up in the same color you saw before going blind. "I also healed you. You were really injured. I wasn't expecting you to go where you did."

"What do you mean you weren't expecting me to go where I did?" you ask.

"I thought my magic would have made you go into an open field. But because your carriage was turning, you wound up crashing into this castle." said Celestia.

"So thats what I crashed into." you think to yourself. "Did I do any damage to this place?" you ask with a worried tone in your voice.

"Nope." said Twilight. "Maybe a scratch or two, but nothing serious. Your carriage on the other hoof..."

"I'm sure it can be fixed." you say. "I know a guy back home who works on cars for a living."

You give a look of confusion though remembering what Celestia said. "But why? Why me out of everyone in my world?"

Twilight smiled before talking. "We've been watching you for quite some time." she said as her horn made a screen appear. On the screen, you could see yourself looking sad and depressed while working.

"We noticed how unhappy you looked and figured you needed our assistance. So we decided to bring you here to help make you happier."

You look down at your boots, trying to grasp the situation. "Well, you're right for thinking I was unhappy. A boring job, hardly any friends, and no girlfriend." you say.

A pink pony started jumping up and down. "You mean a very special somepony?" she asks.

"Pretty sure thats what he meant Pinkie Pie." Twilight said. Your cheeks turn red from embarrassment.

"I just have two more questions." You say. "First, where is my truck? And second, is there a way back to where I came from?"

"You mean that metal carriage you crashed into Twilight's castle?" A rainbow maned pony with wings blurted out loud. Twilight's horn glowed and before you knew it, you were all standing outside of a barn. Everywhere you looked, you saw nothing but apple trees.

"It took a long time to get it here." said a normal looking tan pony wearing a cowboy hat. "Big Mac was so tired by the time he brought it up here. I told him to just let Twilight levitate it, but he just had to be a show off for Ms. Cheerilee."

You laugh. "Well that truck is three and a half tons of American steel. I'm not surprised he got worn out."

Celestia looked over to Applejack. "Thank you again for allowing us to borrow your barn Applejack." she said.

"No problem at all your highness." Applejack replied as she opened up the barn doors.

Looking into the barn, you notice something you thought you'd never see. Your truck looked like it was brand new.

"How is it like this?" you ask. "It doesn't look like it hit anything at all."

Twilight smiled. "After Rainbow Dash managed to provide a sketch of what it looked before hitting my castle, I managed to put it back to what it looked like before."

Rainbow Dash grinned. "That crash was so awesome! One second its quiet, next thing I know, KABOOM! Then this thing comes out of nowhere and just BAM! Right into the wall."

"May I see if it still runs?" you ask.

"Of course." said Twilight.

Getting into the cab, you pull the key out of your pocket. You turn the ignition on, but nothing happens. Rainbow Dash looked puzzled.

"Shouldn't it be making a noise? I heard it making a loud noise before it crashed." she said as she moved closer.

"Gas tank is empty. Must have leaked out after the crash." you say getting out.

"Gas?" a light yellow pegasus said softly. "What is gas?" she said looking towards Twilight.

"I honestly don't know Fluttershy." Twilight says.

"It's a liquid you pour into here." you say as you point at the gas tank door. "It's what makes the truck run."

"I don't think we have that here." Twilight said. "But I'm sure we can find something to make it go. I don't think Big Mac wants to pull it again."

"Well, thank you anyways Twilight for putting it back together." you say as you extend your arm out in an attempt at a hand or hoof shake.

"No problem at all." Twilight said as she shook your hand.

"Now getting back to your second question." Celestia said. "I'm afraid there isn't any going back to your world. The spell that brought you here isn't reversible."

"We did have a magic portal that led to your world. Thats why we knew that you're a human." said Twilight. "But because of a recent attack by changelings, that portal is no longer usable."

"Seven years bad luck for all of them!" said Pinkie Pie.

"So you're saying that I'll be living in this world from now on?" you ask.

"Yes." Celestia said as she put her hoof on your shoulder. "I'm sure this is all a lot to take in at once. But I'm sure you'll come to like living here." she said softly.

"Well, I have been looking for some change in my life." you say looking at her. You don't know exactly why, but the moment her hoof touched your shoulder, you seemed to be more calm. "What better change than a completely new world?"

"We have a small cottage in town you can live in." Twilight explains. "I can also make a small shelter for this. I think Applejack might want her barn back." she said pointing to your truck.

"Thank you Twilight." you say. "I'll be honest. This might be the best thing to happen to me. A fresh start. A new beginning." You smile as Pinkie Pie starts bouncing up and down.

"Well then. I think its time we throw you a 'Welcome to Ponyville' party!" she yells.

Celestia's horn glows as you're all transported back to Twilight's castle. Party decorations are everywhere. The room is filled with colorful dancing ponies. In the distance, you see a unicorn with striped blue hair and goggles making mixed beats on a DJ table. You walk over to the drink table and get some fruit punch. You take a drink while looking out at the sunset.

"This is just what I needed after all. I'm sure I'll enjoy being here much more than back on Earth." you think as you chug down the rest of the punch.
