My Little Firefly: Out In Equestria: Chapter 1 by Kintexu2

"Captain, there appears to be some sort of planet coming up. It doesn't appear on radar or any of the charts." Wash said, turning to the man in the brown coat standing next to him.

"You sure? We've used this path before, there's never been anything out there. Planets don't just appear out of nowhere." The captain said back.

"Pretty sure. It's a small planet, with only a single moon. We're too far away to tell if its hospitable or not"

"Pull in closer. Might be there's a job there we can do"

After some time getting closer to planet, and a few hours scanning it for life, some the crew of Serenity met in the dining area to discuss their next actions. They waited for Wash to come back with his scans.

"I don't see what you think is going to be on that planet. Hell, Mal, judging from the size of it, it's probably just an large asteroid that escaped." Jayne said, spearing an apple off the table with his knife and starting to cut into it.

At that moment, Wash entered from the cockpit, a worried look on his face. "I'm not sure we should land on that place."

"Not enough oxygen to support life?" The captain asked.

"No, plenty of oxygen. Planet's got pretty much everything it needs to support life."

"Then what's the problem?" the captain shot back.

"Whatever that planet is made of, it's putting out a lot of radiation. And I can't pin down what kind. I've never seen it before."

At that point, Kaylee, the ship's engineer, piped up, "Serenity's got radiation shields. She'll hold long enough for us to get down there and look."

"I'm not sure charging into unknown radiation is smart Kaylee." Shepherd Book said.

"The shepherd's right. We don't even know if these old shields will hold against whatever that is, and we haven't exactly had the money to replace them." Mal said.

Suddenly, the door leading down into the infirmary opened up. A young girl in a flowery dress stepped in, her bare feet almost silent on the ship's metal floor. "Magic and ponies. That's all that's there. Magic...and ponies. And pony magic."

"Well, now that we know all that planet has is horses, can we please forget about it and move on to a job?" Jayne exclaimed with more than a little annoyance.

"Not horses. Ponies. In all colors of the rainbow. And the rainbows are the colors of the ponies" River said, beginning to wander about the room.

"Well, now that we've made that distinction, can we get back to just how dangerous this planet might be?" The captain said, trying to steer the conversation back in a meaningful direction.

"Sir, I don't see what the danger would be of getting in close." Zoe said, rising to walk over to Wash. "Even if it's an unknown radiation, Kaylee said the shields would hold"

They all paused as footsteps were heard hurrying up the stairs from the infirmary. The young man who came in was wearing a fairly nice suit to be among a group of outlaws. "River's not doing anything in here is she?" he said, referring to his sister who had begun to wander about the kitchen, opening and closing the cabinets.

"None doctor. She was just telling us what was on this planet up ahead" Kaylee said with a smile on her face.

Book, remembering an previous incident with River and knives, got up and went over to River, who was getting uncomfortably close to the knife drawer again.

Getting a little annoyed at the interruptions, the captain asked Wash again "Can we land on the planet, or will the radiation pierce the hull?"

"What kind of radiation?" The doctor walked over to Wash and the captain. Wash handed him the papers describing the planet. After a few minutes of reading, Simon said "There should be no worries. This is a radiation some of my colleagues were experimenting with back on Osiris. It's called M-radiation. We don't know much about it, but it seems to help heal injured bodies, but its near impossible for humans to generate, so the research was abandoned. We never imagined to find an entire planet exuding it."

"Well, that settles it. I'll fly the ship down to this planet, we'll see River's colorful ponies, and then we'll be out by lunch tomorrow once you realize there's nothing there." Wash said, heading towards the cockpit.

As the ship started moving towards the odd planet, the rest of the crew did their usual landing preparations. Jayne went to his room and grabbed Vera, his favorite gun and was reaching for his grenades when Mal said "No grenades". Kaylee went into the engine room to check something. Zoe went up to chat with Wash. Book and Simon led River back down into the infirmary, leaving Mal alone in the dining area. As he sat there contemplating how a planet could just appear out of nowhere, the ship gave a violent lurch and he heard Wash curse something unintelligible. Kaylee ran in from the engine room shouting it wouldn't run anymore. Mal could feel the ship picking up speed. He ran to the cockpit to find Wash frantically trying to get the ship back online. "Can't you do something?" he shouted at Wash.

"Nothing I try works! All the systems are offline! I can't even steer!" Wash shot back.

They crew watched in horror as the windshield filled with the sight of a continent, then a forest,
and then they all blacked out as the ship crashed into the strange trees of the world that shouldn't have been there.

Kaylee

The first member of the former Firefly Serenity to awake did so on the edge of a forest. Kaylee opened her eyes, and reached up to her aching head. The first thing she noticed was that her hand felt odd as it touched her scalp. She brought her hand down to where she could see it. "Was that a hoof?" she thought to herself. She looked at the rest of her body. She was a horse; no, that wasn't the word. She was a pony, covered head to tail in bright purply-pink fur. She had somehow gotten a brand or tattoo on her flank. It was a red flower in the same color as Serenity's logo, with a silver wrench inside. She tried to stand, but she couldn't find her balance on 2 legs. She tipped over, hitting her head and blacking out again.

When she came to, she was in a bed inside a house. Nearby there was a yellow pony with long pink hair making something that seemed to be soup on a stove. As she stirred in the bed, the pegasus turned around shyly. The pegasus squeaked out a tiny "Hello" as she brought over a bowl of the red broth.

Kaylee managed out a weak "Hi...sweetie..." before succumbing to the darkness of injury induced sleep again.

Wash

Wash woke up from his sleep on something soft. Cotton? No, it was too wet to be cotton. He stretched as he rose, freaking out when he saw not 4 appendages spread, but 6. He had somehow grown wings. He freaked out even more when he realized his soft cottony bed was in fact a cloud. Realizing he was no longer human caused him to backpedal right off the cloud. He knew that he was about 300 feet up, more than enough to kill anything on impact. "I wonder if these wings work" he thought to himself as he tested spreading them out. As soon as he did so, he started more of a glide than a free fall, and after some experimentation, realized he had just as much control over his flight with wings as he did with Serenity. As he soared around, he noticed he had somehow gotten a tattoo of a Red circle with Serenity's side engine in it on the flank of his sky blue coat.

He continued his flight, trying to see if he could find Serenity or any of his fellow crew members. A ship that big couldn't be that hard to spot, would it? As he looked around, he saw what appeared to be a house made of clouds up ahead. "Couldn't hurt to meet the locals, and maybe they could give me a hand with finding the others". He flew over to the cloud house, landing cautiously on the doorstep, unsure how and why he could walk on clouds now. He knocked on the door with his new hoof. After a few minutes, a blue pony with rainbow hair came to the door.

"Hey, you aren't Derpy. Haven't seen you around here before? You new?"

"Uh...yeah. Well, visiting. I'm looking for some friends I was with. We got separated shortly after coming here" Wash said, preferring not to think of the alternative after a ship crash "and I was wondering if you could give me a hand here, me being new and all."

"Finding some lost ponies? Nothing the greatest flier in Equestria can't handle! So, what do these friends of yours look like?"

This question took his a few seconds to figure out. If he was a pony, then he had no idea what the others might be. "Uh...I can't seem to remember; let's just look around and if you spot any odd people, I mean ponies, just point them out."

"Amnesia huh? Oh well, I love a good challenge", Rainbow Dash said as they took off towards the center of Ponyville.

Jayne

Jayne shook his head to try to clear the flashing lights from his vision. He seemed to be inside his bunk in Serenity, but everything seemed a little...odd. His normally eye-level shelves were far above his head, not to mention the fact he no longer could reach his gun stash over his bed. He reached over to pick up his favorite gun, Vera, only to knock it away with his clunky hooves. The ship rocked, like it was balanced precariously. He grabbed a few grenades and slung Vera over his shoulder. He sure as hell was not leaving her behind. He cautiously made his way through the empty ship, stopping only once to look at himself in a mirror. He was now an orange and yellow pony with what seemed to be a tattoo of a red explosion with a bullet in the middle. He did laugh at his hair, it resembled a hat he was once given by his mother in a care package. He eventually made his way to the shattered cargo door. He realized that he was stranded on a cliff overlooking a swamp. Serenity was about to pitch off the side. He quickly looked at the ship, realizing it wouldn't be flying anytime soon. The starboard engine was sheared off and missing, and the cockpit was missing also a large chunk.

Forgetting about the ship he had hoped to steal from Mal at some point, he began to make his way down the cliff. He spotted what appeared to be a village nearby. And villages mean people. People mean loot, and possibly repairs for the ship.

The Tams

Simon awoke to some prodding. As he opened his eyes he considered just how damaged his brain must of been because he saw before him a purple unicorn poking him gently with her hoof.

"I uh...am I dreaming?" He said as he considered the animal in front of him.

"I don't think so. Although it's not every day a couple of earth ponies crash through my roof. Normally that's Dash's job." The unicorn said, a look of worry and, was that amusement on her face?

"Earth...ponies? What are you..." He stopped as he saw himself in a mirror the unicorn had lifted up off a nearby table, her horn and the mirror both glowing a light lavender. He was a white-furred horse with neatly cut dark brown hair. He saw something on his...flank?...yes, that would be the word for it. It was a red plus sign with a gold caduceus wrapped through it. After looking at himself in the mirror, he realized that the unicorn had said two earth ponies. "What do you mean two ponies? Another one came with me?"

"Yes. She called herself River. She's right over there. That reminds me, My name is Twilight Sparkle."

"I'm Simon." he said as he laughed inwardly at the unicorn's odd name, but then again, what about this wasn't odd. Apparently both he and River had been transformed into ponies. At that moment River, or a green-furred pony version of her, appeared in a nearby doorway talking to...was that a walking lizard?

"Oh hey; you're up!" the lizard exclaimed. At that moment River walked up to her brother and eyed him strangely. "Pony magic" was all she said before going off to a bookshelf to browse the multi-hued titles.

"She's kind of odd, if you don't mind me saying. Are you related? Other than your colors you two look a lot alike." Twilight said, subtly nodding her head at the lizard and then River, as if to tell him to keep an eye on her. The lizard nodded back, then edged over to where River was looking. Her hair shifted, and Simon saw she had a horn like Twilight. It glowed faintly as a book glowing the same faint green lifted off the shelf and opened in front of her.

"Yes, she's my sister. Um...look, is she going to be okay over there? I wouldn't want her to mess up your filing system" Simon said, starting to edge over to the bookshelf and his sister.

"Don't worry about her, Spike can keep an eye on her. I'm more interested in how you're siblings when you're an earth pony and she is a unicorn. Also, how come she doesn't have a cutie mark yet? By her age I would have thought she would have figured her calling out by now. Judging from yours I would guess you're a doctor?"

"Well, she always has been...gifted, but what's a...cutie mark did you call it?"

" A cutie mark is what every young pony gets once they figure out their true calling in life? How do you have one and don't even know what it is? You sure you're okay Simon?"

Thinking fast he fed her the only answer he could think of "I guess I must have some amnesia; maybe I hit my head when we crashed into your...tree."

"Well maybe you should rest a little then. River's fine. She seems to be enjoying my copy of Supernaturals. You can use the spare bed up the bedroom."

"Yeah..." Simon thought as he went carefully up the steps to the indicated bed, "Supernatural doesn't begin to describe this."

Book

Book woke up to the smell of apples. He could tell immediately something was different about his body. He looked slowly at his hands, which were no longer hands, and then at the dark brown fur covering his body. His heart skipped a beat when he saw a tattoo of a gold cross inside a red circle on his flank; the abbey frowned on such things, but that was the least of his worries at the moment. He had somehow become a horse, as well as separated from his shipmates. As he scanned his surroundings, he realized he had somehow gotten into an apple orchard. Serenity was nowhere to be found. He silently thanked the lord for surviving the crash before getting up and brushing the dirt out of his new fur. He grabbed a scrap of rope off the ground to secure his wild white hair, then went off towards a barn he saw in the distance. Maybe there would be someone there who could tell him where he was.

Zoe

Zoe woke up to the prodding of something hard. Groaning, she pushed it away, only to hear a voice shout "She's alive!" Zoe opened her eyes to find a small orange pegasus prodding her. "You okay there miss?" It said, giving her another gentle prodding.

"I guess so, but where am I" she said, deciding to play along with was obviously a dream.

"You're under our clubhouse, near Ponyville." A yellow pony said, walking up.

"Pony...ville? What do you mean?" She said as she tried to stand only to realize she no longer was a human. Her body now that of a pony, and her normally dark skin replaced by dusky red fur. She has also somehow acquired a tattoo of the Independent Planet's flag inside a red circle.

"Ponyville. You know, for an adult, you aren't very bright." the pegasus said.

"Well, I'm not from around he.."

"You mean you're new! We could show you around town! Then we could get our Travel Guide Cutie marks!" The two ponies said almost at once. A small white unicorn with purple hair poked her head out of the treehouse above.

"Cutie Mark Crusader Travel Guides! Let's go!" She said as she came down.

"Now wait just a...hold on..." Zoe tried to say, as the three began to push and pull her away into the woods towards what she expected would be Ponyville.

Mal

Mal awoke to the sound of footsteps approaching, only they didn't sound like footsteps. They were off beat, almost like a horse, but softer and with the occasional bounce breaking the beat. He had somehow ended up in a bush. He tried to grab hold of a branch poking him in the face, only to end up driving the stick in harder. He didn't have fingers. Instead his hand ended in a hoof . He brushed the stick away instead of trying to grab it, and then rolled out of the bush. He almost rolled into a bright pink pony that was bouncing along. The pony stared at him for a second, getting face to face with him for a second before releasing a huge gasp and running away. Mal took a look at himself, seeing his body replaced by that of a pony. His skin was now covered in brown fur the color of his Independent coat. On his flank there was a tattoo of Serenity's logo. "Great, now I am the ship. Did I become River too?" He chuckled to himself, remembering the girl's antics that tricked Early for them a few months earlier. He heard several voices off in the distance in the direction the pink pony ran moments ago. "This could either turn out bad, or really bad." he thought to himself as he started walking towards what had to be a town in the distance.

Simon

Simon awoke from his light sleep to the sound of a door opening and hooves on the floor. He got out of his borrowed bed and stepped lightly over to the edge. Below, in the center of the library, was a yellow pony with wings talking to the purple one who called herself Twilight Sparkle. “At least I know it wasn’t a dream” he said to himself silently as he stepped down the stairs.

“...and that’s when I found her. I got some animals to help me get her inside, but she’s not staying conscious for long amounts of time” the pegasus said, as Simon stepped off the stairs into the room. The pegasus got quiet and edged away slightly when she saw him there. “Oh...I didn’t know you had company...” she whispered, almost inaudibly to Twilight, before edging towards the door. “I’ll just come back later”

“Wait, Fluttershy. This pony’s a doctor. Maybe he can help your injured mare.” Twilight said, trying to keep her from leaving. “You can help, right” she added as she turned to Simon.

Simon thought to himself “Another pony mysteriously appearing at the same time as me. This couldn't be a coincidence.” Out loud he said “Take me to this mare. She might be some...pony I know”

Book

As he neared the barn, Book watched carefully for any signs humanity, or maybe here it was ponymanity. Suddenly, he heard a loud voice shout “And this is Sweet Apple Acres! My big sis and bro supply apples to all of Equestria from here!”

“That’s very nice, but I really would prefer to talk to someone in charge” He heard a familiar voice say.

“Zoe! Are you there!” he shouted in the direction he heard the voices.

“Shepherd? Oh, is it good to hear a familiar voice.” Zoe said as she came into view through the orchard, 3 young ponies around her. “These three have been driving me batty. Woah. Shepherd. Nice fur.”

“I could say the same to you. Now what have you learned from these young uh...ponies.” He asked, curious about the energetic fillies.

“We were showing Miss Zoe here around Ponyville!” The orange one piped up.

“Yeah! This is my big sis’s farm!” The small yellow one said.

“Next, we’re going to Carousel Boutique right? This place is boring.” The white and purple one said.

“I’d really like to see whoever is in charge of this town. Do you have a mayor or someone I could talk to?” Zoe said.

“But I was gonna take them up to Dash’s house!” The orange one continued, oblivious to Zoe’s request.

As the three continued to argue, Zoe and Book edged away in the direction of the barn and farmhouses. “Maybe someone there can give us a straight answer” Zoe said quietly to Book.

Mal

Mal found himself in the busiest part of town, if the small town of Ponyville could be considered busy. Unsure of where to begin, the town seemed to lack any sort of bar or tavern, he picked out a building at random. It was large and shaped kind of like those gingerbread houses found back in the central planets around holidays. He saw it was named Sugarcube Corner. He pushed the door open slowly with his new hooves, and the aroma of sugar assaulted his nose. As he stepped in, he saw a familiar pink pony frantically running around hanging streamers, balloons, and other party fair while at the same time baking massive amounts of cakes, cupcakes, and other sweets. She was moving so fast it was like she was in 10 places at once.

She stopped right in front of Mal “Silly, it’s not time for your party yet! But I can see you can’t wait until later. Here, have some cupcakes while I keep setting up!” And like that, he was pushed over to a table stacked with sweets and the pony went back to baking and hanging party favors. “Oh! What’s your name? I’m Pinkie Pie!” Her voice seemed to come from all directions at once.

“Malcolm Reynolds. Most call me Mal” He said, flustered at her suddenness and speed, and unsure how he was expected to pick up any of the food in front of him without fingers.

“Mal? That’s a funny name. I never saw you before, and if I never saw you before that means you're new, 'cause I know every pony, and I mean every pony in Ponyville. And If you’re new that means you need a Welcome party!”

“Now if you know every pony here, I would be correct in saying that you could point out anyone that you’ve never seen before. Right?”

“That’s Right!” She exclaimed, coming to a stop next to Mal. “Ooooh! Did you come with friends? Do they need a welcome party too? I’ll have make more cakes for them”

As she started to go towards the kitchen, Mal raised a hoof to stop her. “I came with friends, but we got separated. I need you to help me find them. Anyone you don’t recognize could be them.”

Pinkie’s hair seemed to drop a little “But...then there won’t be a party if we go out”

Mal realized he had touched a cord that he didn’t want to play with. “Well, once we find them, there can be a bigger party. Right now I just want to focus on finding them.” At this, her hair perked back up to full puffiness.

“Well then, what are we waiting for! Lets go!” She said, as she dragged him towards the door.

Wash

“Flying like this beats Serenity any day!” Wash exclaimed. He had been flying with Rainbow Dash for the better part of a day and had yet to see any of Serenity’s crew.

He had practically forgotten about his search for the crew when Dash flew over and asked “Serenity? Whats that? A flight team?”

“You could call it that. But its composed of more than just pegasi.” Dash’s question snapped him back to the task at hand. He could enjoy machine-less flight later; now he had to find Serenity and its crew.

As the sun was starting to get low, Wash spotted a group of four ponies leaving Ponyville proper and heading towards a cottage in the distance. “Hey Rainbow!” He called over “Do you know those ponies?”

“Yeah! That’s Twilight and Fluttershy, but those other two i don’t know.”

As they flew in closer, Wash hoped that one of them would turn out to be Zoe.

“Look out below!”Dash yelled as he landed quickly in front of the group, startling the yellow one and the white one.

“Dash, do you have to do that every time?” the purple unicorn said.

“Sorry Twi. Say, who’s the new guys?”

“This is Simon,” she said, indicating the shocked white one, “and that green one is River. Who’s he?” she added, indicating Wash trying to catch up to Dash.

“Simon, River!” he exclaimed as he came to a rather awkward landing.

“Wash? Wow, you look...different.” Simon said, looking at the pilot. “I was wondering where anyone else landed after that crash.”

“Looks like little River’s pony predictions came true. Have you heard from anyone else?”

“We’re actually on our way to Fluttershy’s cottage to see a badly injured mare” the purple one said, stepping over to them.

“Wait, a badly injured...Mare? ” the phrase made Wash’s heart jump. It couldn’t be Zoe...could it? “Wuh de tyen ah...Do you know her name?”

The yellow one who must have been Fluttershy stepped forward a little bit “She’s been unconscious most the time since I found her.”

“Is there a problem?” Twilight said.

“It could be Zoe” Simon exclaimed, recognizing Wash’s distress. The entire group broke into a run, Dash leading Wash ahead of the others in the air.

Jayne

Jayne was getting tired from slogging through swamps all day. The village he had spotted was a lot farther off than the had originally planned, and the sun was starting to set without him having made much real progress. He had tried firing Vera, but his hooves were pretty useless at pulling the trigger. He had brought 4 grenades just in case, but grenades were messy, and ran out fast. He halfway considered going back to Serenity, but that idea ended quickly when Serenity slid from its precarious perch into the muck below.

“Ribbit”

“What was that? Show yourself!” He yelled at the noise.

“Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit” the sound echoed and started coming from all directions. It was getting dark from the sun falling behind the cliff Serenity had fallen off of.

“You ching-wah TSAO duh liou mahng! Get out here!” he found a patch of dry ground and broke open one of his grenades with his teeth. He set a few large dry sticks in the explosives and fumbled with Vera until he got a spark to shoot out the chamber. The spark lit the gunpowder which set the sticks alight. He saw the noise was coming from....frogs? He was surrounded by hundreds of frogs, all slowly moving closer to the sudden glow. “Frogs? That’s all this place has? Frogs! Gorram it. I wanted something out here i could use; not some ruttin frogs.” That’s when he noticed his light was getting brighter. He glanced over at his fire, only to see it spreading to a nearby tree. All he could say was “Damn” before running full sprint in the direction of the town.
