Shimmering Rainbow
Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Dawn of the First Morning
I woke up, and turned off my Rick Astley blaring alarm clock. Because for some reason, I liked the song commonly used for rickrolling. Oh well. It was time for my first day at Canterlot High. I put on my watch and glasses, and remade my bed. I reached in the closet and put on my typical, a T-shirt, jeans, white socks, and my sneakers.
I walked downstairs, where I met up with my roommate, Sunset Shimmer. Me being a guy, it could be awkward, but we were good friends. I had just moved to Cantorlot after the Slinky Incident in Detrot. Sunset Shimmer was putting on her jacket, and making some poptarts. She liked the fruit flavors, but I only liked the cinnamon or cookie dough ones, cold. I ripped open my cinnamon poptart, announcing my presence in the kitchen. Sunset Shimmer turned around.
“Morning, Ian. How did you sleep?” She asked, smiling.
“Fine. How about you?” I said, looking at my poptart.
“Good. You know, I really appreciate it when you look in my eyes.” said Sunset, rubbing my hair, which would have messed it up, if I really cared about my hair.
“Sorry, Sunset. It’s just hard for me.” I said, apologetically, this time looking into her eyes.
“I’m sorry too. I’ve just never had a friend with …”
“Asperger’s?” I finished.
“Yeah, Asperger’s. I’ve never had a friend like this before. I mean, you’re different in a good way. But you remind me of some of my friends in your own way. If you don’t know someone, you’re quiet like Fluttershy. If you do know someone, you turn all Pinkie Pie on them, like super happy and excited. If you’re playing a video game or something, you turn into Rainbow Dash, all competitive, and in class, you remind me of Twilight Sparkle, all smart and stuff.”
I finished my poptart, before going on my laptop to see if there was new information on the latest installment in the Mega Mare series on Reddit. Sunset, however, was doing whatever it is she did in the morning. Hair and makeup and whatnot. I don’t know, it didn’t interest me.
“C’mon, try and act somewhat normal. I mean, you want to make a good impression on everyone, right?” asked Sunset, finishing adjusting her hair or whatever.
“When you say normal, do you mean normal as in act how I normally act? What do you mean?” I asked in return.
Sunset Shimmer facepalmed and rubbed her temples.
“I mean, act somewhat like a regular person.”
“Like David Tennant on Doctor Whooves?”
“Kind of, I guess. I don’t know, I’m not a Whovian.”
“Can I speak in a British accent?”
“No!”
Sunset groaned as she held the door open.
“Come on, Ian, we don’t want to be late.” Sunset said as she adjusted the backpack on her shoulders.
I adjusted my own backpack, stuffing my supplies into it, before walking out the door, which Sunset locked. Living in an apartment was not something I was used to, but I dealt with it.
Sunset and I walked out to her car, which was a bright red sports car she’d gotten from a previous boyfriend of hers. She, like me, was currently single, and I respected her enough that I would wait until she made any move towards me that I would discuss my slight crush on her.
As I got in the passenger side, Sunset thumbed through her music collection. She grinned as she showed me the case of the CD. Captain Morgan’s Revenge, by Alestorm. Nothing like Scottish pirate metal to get you in the school day spirit. As the titular track began, she drove off. A car with a badass music setup, was carrying a girl with blue hair, who was playing dubstep. Sunset waved to her, and the girl waved back.
“That’s Vinyl Scratch, or as she like to call herself on stage, DJ P0N-3. She’s a friend of mine. She goes to Canterlot High, too, and she’s in a relationship with Octavia, a violinist. For some inexplicable reason, there are a ton of girls and lesbians at our school. Hell, I’m bi, and Rainbow Dash doesn’t mind the occasional, a-hem, experiment.” Sunset explained.
Well, then, I thought. Depending on how cute this Rainbow Dash is, maybe I could have a little fun this year…
My thought was interrupted as the car lurched to a stop, and my seatbelt hit me in the chest.
“Brake check! Also, I really hope you’re not thinking certain bad thoughts.” Sunset joked.
“Maybe I was thinking about how bad I’d like to see a rap battle between Wolverine and Spiderman on Epic Rap Battles of History.” I said, looking dead serious.
“Yeah, and I’m trying to figure out what to name you. Oh yeah, Liar Boy!”
Normally, if this had been at the apartment, this would have ended in a tickle fight. My hands fought the urge to do so. Instead I attempted to play Tetris on my retro Game Colt, but Sunset swiped the cartridge out before I could even turn it on.
“No games. Seriously, sometimes I feel like your mother more than your housemate and friend.” Sunset said, facepalming.
“Would my mother smoke weed with me?” I joked.
“You have a point. But you can’t have the game back.”
“But, Mom!” I said, utilizing the little bit of sarcasm I had actually learned.
Sunset snorted.
“If I were your mother, I would have left you to the wolves.”
“For once, I was actually using sarcasm there.”
“Gee, I couldn’t tell!”
The conversation ended as we pulled into the parking lot of Cantorlot High. A group of six other students were waving at Sunset Shimmer. I got out of the car, which confused them all. Sunset and I walked over.
“Hey, Sunset. Who’s the guy, your new boyfriend?” asked a pink haired girl.
“No, Pinkie. He’s a friend who’s been crashing at my place.” Sunset replied.
“Hello. I’m Ian.” I said, my hands in my pocket.
“Hi, I’m Pinkie Pie!” said the energetic pink girl before me.
“My name is Twilight Sparkle. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” said a purple haired girl with matching purple skin.
“Um… Hello. I’m Fluttershy.” said a pink haired, yellow skinned girl.
“Howdy! I’m Applejack.” said a blonde girl in a cowboy hat.
“I am Rarity. So you’re a friend of Sunset Shimmer then?” said a girl with curly purple hair, and pure white skin.
“And I’m Rainbow Dash, the coolest, most awesome, and most radical sports star in the history of Cantorlot High.” said a light blue girl, with rainbow colored hair.
“Aren’t each of those the same thing, Rainbow Dash?” asked Twilight Sparkle.
“You would think that, Twilight. And that is why you’re an egghead.” Rainbow Dash said.
“Who’s the one who read every single Daring Do book, while I only read the first one or two, before realizing it was intellectually inferior to the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien?”
“Girls, we want to be nice in front of our new friend, don’t we?” Rarity said, putting her arms between the two.
Fluttershy looked at me.
“So what do you like to do, Ian?” She asked, looking at me.
I looked at the ground.
“I like video games, computers, and other stuff.” I replied.
Fluttershy turned to Sunset Shimmer.
“Your friend seems a bit off, Sunset Shimmer.” She said.
“Off? You mean, like, Dazzlings off?” asked Pinkie Pie.
“Not at all, Pinkie. Just a bit different from everybody else.”
“Well, you see, Ian here has Asperger’s Syndrome.” said Sunset Shimmer.
“Maud has Asperger’s. At least, I think she does. But Ian seems a bit more expressive. ” Pinkie Pie chimed in.
“That’s true. Alright, Ian, we have open campus lunch, so we’ll head to Pizza Hut for lunch. Just go to the classes designated on your schedule, okay?” Sunset said.
I nodded slowly, looking at my sneakers.
“Alright, then. We’ll meet up at lunch!” smiled Pinkie Pie.
I swallowed. Well, I thought, let’s begin the first day at Cantorlot High on a good note.
