My Little Pony: The After Years
Chapter 6: The Book Below the Basement
Previous Chapter Next ChapterMy mother lead me down to the lower levels of the castle, even further beyond the basement and storage levels. I had never been here before in my entire life. They were nothing like the lab just below the main floor; they were dark and creepy, as if nopony had ever been here in a thousand years. How did I not know of this place until right now?
"Here we are..." my mother said suddenly. I looked at where we stopped; two large purple doors connected to each other with an engraving of the ancient Elements of Harmony on it. Down the centre where the two doors met was a streak of red paint.
"How long have you been keeping this secret from me?" I asked my mother, for I had stayed extremely quiet throughout the trip here.
"Long before you were born, I'm afraid..." my mom said sounding ashamed of herself "However, I know now that I have no right to keep this from you. I don't know the entire reason for this, but I can at least tell you what I know."
Slowly, she walked over to a little hole in the lower part of the door. She stuck her horn in it lit up her horn, signalling to me she was using an unlocking spell. The large doors then began to open, albeit somewhat slowly.
"Come on then" said my mom as she began walking inside the place the doors previously closed off from us "No time like the present, I suppose."
With a hint of reluctance, I followed her through the door, not knowing what lay beyond it.

"UGH!" I laid my head against a large, moss and flower-covered rock in my garden "Why does mom have to be pregnant? Why did dad have to die? Why can't at least Discord help me with these flowers? Wait... forget I said that..."
Every day, I was in charge of taking care of the garden right outside my house. Anyone who knows me well enough would know that my thing was flowers and gardening, and I loved doing it with all my heart! I just wish someone would help me. My mom used to, but then she got pregnant. Just a few more days, Springy!
"Well, I suppose this place won't get watered and fertilized by itself!" I joked to myself "Ha, ha... yeah, no one's here..." I quickly realized and sighed "Ugh, might as well get started."
Then, an idea sprung in my head. Perhaps one of my friends can help!
"Yeah, that sounds like a great idea!" I beamed.

"Sorry Springy, but I'm helping my mom out with a party for the cutest lil' filly ever!" said Bubblegum "Her name is Carrot Pie, and she's Carrot Top's little girl. Oh, you'd love her! She does exactly what you like to do. Gardening! Only, she eats her plants instead of just making them look pretty. I guess you could put bells or whistles on the carrot leaves, but I think that's it. Oh, she also likes sitting down and talking to her mom as well! Isn't that weird that you two are so alike? Maybe you're long-lost sisters and now you just need to reunite with her!"
"So... that's a no?" I asked again for good measure.
"Nope!" my bouncy friend cheerfully replied "Sorry Springy, but if I don't do this, I won't pass my mom's party test! Here's a secret..." she leaned in closer to my ear and whispered "It's really, really important..."
"It's okay, I understand" I said, a little disappointed that she couldn't come and help me "Well, I still have other friends, right?

"No can do, pardner. Mah ma was bein' stubborn again with Uncle Macintosh, got into ah fight an' hurt 'erself. So now, ah gots ta do the buckin' mahself! Sorry 'bout 'at..." explained Little Mac "But maybe y'all could help me? Ah mean, thems trees are mighty tough fer ah little ol' colt like me. An' yer so much bigger an' stronger than ah am."
"Are you... hitting on me?" I asked the much younger colt in a disgusted, yet slightly impressed voice.
"Um... no?" Little Mac with a face that showed me he was caught red-handed. He then quickly rushed inside his house and never came back out. I stood there for a good two minutes before I decided it was time to ask someone else.

"Our mother expects us to finish this dress before next week! We truly can't attend your gardening session..." said Thread in a rather disappointing tone "A shame too. That sounded like a whale of a time, it did!"
"Besides, I don't wanna get my hooves all dirty!" complained Ribbon in a slightly less disappointing tone "I mean, who would ever LIKE the mud? I could see some ponies working in it, but not LOVING it."
"I take minor offense to that..." I deadpanned.
"Oh, um, sorry darling..." Ribbon apologized "Why don't you ask Blitz about it? I know he likes books, but he DOES hang around Midnight often. I'm sure he has some sort of drive for gardening."

"Mom wants me to babysit Whirlwind while she goes for Midnight's training. Shame to, since I wanted to read my new Daring Do book..." said a very disappointed Blitz Wing "Well, at least I get to spend time with Whirlwind" he looked at the tiny foal "Isn't that right, you little cutie?"
"So in short, nopony has the time to help me..." I said in a sad voice.
"Hey, don't think of it like that!" Blitz tried to cheer me up by patting me on the back "Think of it like this: Everypony wants to help you, but they can't find the time to do so. Okay?"
"Yeah, you're right!" I said, a little better now "But still, I wish I had someone to help me out when it came to gardening. Actually, I just realized that once my mom get's that kid out, I'll have to wait even LONGER for easy help for my garden since now she has that foal to take care of..."
"Thaba ba thaa!" said Whirlwind, as if she was trying to explain something to me.
"Really Whirlwind?" I asked the young filly "Are you sure?"
Whirlwind simply nodded her head in confirmation.
"What did she say?" asked a confused Blitz.
"She said to try and talk to Midnight" I explained to my friend "I don't know why though... isn't Midnight at your mom's usual training grounds? Or, at least supposed to be?"
"Well, you know Nighty and his ability to slip past my mother!" Blitz Wing laughed "Perhaps he's still at home chillaxin' with his 3DS in hoof playing Tails of the Abyss. You never know..."
"Alright, thanks Blitz!" I shouted to my friend as I took off "And you too Whirlwind!"
Whirlwind just rolled her eyes as I flew out of Blitz's cloudy home and went straight for Midnight's castle.

I looked around the huge room that was previously unbeknownst to me. It was a light blue, crystal, circular room with nothing but a pedestal with a single book in the centre. How did I not know of this place's existence? What other secrets did my mother hide from me? Probably many, but I just couldn't be bothered with them as of now. Right now, I was just amazed at what lay under this castle.
"If you're curious to know, this part of the castle was here when it was created all those years ago" explained my mom "Your father and I could never understand what it was for..."
"You mean dad knows about me too?" I asked with a little frustration.
"No" my mom said simply "Only I know of why you're different from the others."
"Different?" my voice rose slightly "What do you mean differe-"
"Your mane, Midnight. I talking about why it glows like that" my mother interrupted me before I got too angry "After you were born, the first chance I got to study why you were born like that I took. I searched through every single book in our library, but I couldn't find anything. Just as I decided it was time to give up, I stumbled upon this place."
"Then... what IS this place?" I asked with a bit of nervousness in my voice.
"This place..." my mother said before swallowing again "...is where you will find your destiny, as corny as that sounds" she pointed her hoof at the book in the centre of the room. It wasn't a huge book, but it wasn't exactly small either. (A.N. Think of an ACER computer monitor)
I walked over to where the book lay. As I got closer to the dark blue book with a single red streak down the centre, I felt a weird presence wash over me, though I thought nothing of it. As I stood right next to it, I saw that the title of the book was called...
"The Red Streak..." I said aloud. I opened it up slowly, thinking I would release some kind of magical power that most mysterious objects in Equestria do. But no, nothing happened. It was just a book, plain and simple. But this seemingly ordinary book was about to tell me something extraordinary!
"Midnight?" I head the familiar voice of a tomboyish mare. I turned my head quickly to see none other than Spring Blossom standing in the open door frame.
"I forgot to close the door, didn't I?" asked my mother as she gave a huge sigh "Well, I suppose the secret's out. Come on in, Spring!"
"Oh, thanks Twi!" said Springy, which my mother in return gave another sigh. Oh how she loathed being called that by Spring Blossom. She didn't mind when people called her "Princess", but when somepony called her by the nickname uncle Shining Armor gave her when they were kids and it wasn't uncle Shining Armor, she wouldn't be the happiest mare in the world.
"B, what are you doing here?" I asked my female friend "How did you even find this place?"
"Mr. Bookworm said you two were down here for some reason..." explained Spring, using my dad's last name to further annoy my mom "Plus, I wanted to know if you had any time to help me in the garden."
"No can do B" I said "I apparently have to learn about my existence. If you want, you can join me. It's not like your flowers wilt from a day without water."
"I guess you're right..." Spring accepted defeat "Alright, take a seat and scootch over!"
I grabbed the book in front of me and took a seat on the floor, my back lying on the pedestal which the book previously rested upon. Spring took a seat right next to me as I began reading a page bookmarked by a red cloth.
"The Red Streak is a rare occurrence that happens every 2000 years" I read from the tome "It symbolizes great power in a pony, weather they'd be a Unicorn, Pegasus, Earth Pony, or the extremely rare Alicorn. It makes power, blah, blah, blah... Ah! A highlighted section!"
My mother facehoofed.
"To the reader of this book and perhaps the next Red Streak: If you happen to exist in the year 1024, C.E., please know that a great responsibility has been thrust into your hooves. The legends say that two of the Red Streaks will clash for the fate of the world. The victor shall receive a difficult confrontation, but can be overcome. If done so, the true evil shall reveal itself to the victor, and the final battle shall commence."
"Whoa..." said a flabbergasted Spring Blossom "Is that really what you have to do? Go out and save the world?"
"I guess." I said, rereading what had just been assigned to me, still shocked that all this responsibility
"Midnight, there's something else I need to tell you..." said my mother suddenly.
"Hmm?" I looked at where she was standing.
"You... uh... well, you see... jeez, this is harder to say then my previous secret..." my mom said nervously "You weren't... originally... going to be an Alicorn..."
"Come again?" My eyes widened as big as saucers from the news.
"You weren't going to be born with wings AND a horn" my mother stated in a simpler fashion "You were originally going to be... a Unicorn."
"What do you mean?" I asked "Did you, like, mess with my genes before I popped out?"
"No, no!" my mom quickly corrected my assumption "I... think it had something to do with the mare in your story..."
"So you do know..." I said, feeling a little cheated.
"Sixteen years ago," began my mother, ignoring my comment "I was attacked by a mare quite similar to the one you told me about. She couldn't be the same one though, since she blew herself up with a self-destruct spell."
"But the mare I encountered survived a fatality spell dad shot through her" I explained "Are you sure she wasn't the same one?"
The gears in my mom's head were turning. I could tell with the face she made every time she was thinking of something.
"There is a possibility that she is the same mare..." stated my mom "But I can only think of one pony, or in this case, thing that could do this. We'll ask him later though. Now, don't you have something you should be attending?"
My eyes widened with realization. "Nuts! Rainbow Dash is gonna kill me!"
I took off and flew out of the room and up the staircase as fast as I could.
"That guy is more forgetful than Little Mac..." Spring chuckled a bit.

"RAINBOW DASH!" I shouted as I approached the rainbow mane mare that was impatiently waiting for my arrival. She stood at our usual training ground; a hill near her home just in case Whirlwind or Blitz needed anything.
"Where in the name of Celestia were you kid?!" shouted RD as soon as she laid her eyes on me "Now, drop and give me thirty!"
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" I chanted every time I completed a push-up.

After a long, long hour of training, I made my way back to the castle where I was told by my father that my mom had gone off to Fluttershy's cottage. Racing there, I found my mother standing outside the rather timid mare's home patiently awaiting my arrival. As I got closer to her, her head turned to greet me.
"Are you ready, Midnight?" she asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be!" I said with a bit of confidence. If you couldn't figure it out already, we were going to meet up with Discord and have a 'chat' with him about current events. We had to be ready though. He IS a Draconequus after all.
My mother knocked on Fluttershy's door. We waited for a few seconds only have the door open by the Lord of Chaos himself.
"Why hello there, my dearest Twilight! What brings you here this fine afternoon?" asked Discord as he brought out some complementary cookies he poofed out from nowhere.
"Why don't we have a seat and talk about it..." my mother said. Discord looked a bit confused, but he let us into his friend's house nonetheless.

The lights went dark. The only light was a single beam shining on Discord's face. He didn't mind the blinding light in his face for some weird reason. I don't know, maybe because he was a spirit?
"Tell us what you know!" shouted my mother as if she was an interrogating policemare.
"Okay! Okay! I'll tell you!" Discord shriveled up as he confessed "I was the one who took Fluttershy's cream cheese! The rabbit forced me to do! I swear!"
"Wait, what?" my mom asked the spirit of disharmony in a slightly confused tone "No, no... I mean about the other thing."
"Um... I accidentally broke her clock?" Discord questioned
"No, not that" my mom deadpanned.
"Um... I was the one who took Angel's carrots?" he was guessing by this point.
"Well, everypony knows that..." my mother rolled her eyes "No, I'm talking about the thing!"
"The thing?"
"Yeah! The thing with the stuff in the thing from the thing!"
"What she means is, Discord," I cut into their 'lovely' conversation "were you the one who tried to kill me earlier?"
"Kill you? Now, why would I ever do such a thing?" the Lord of Chaos asked as he smiled and poofed up a glass of some chocolate milk to keep him busy.
"Discord, this is serious!" yelled my mother "Somepony's out there trying to kill my son and all the clues lead back to you! Care to explain?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about..." Discord's sly smile intensified "I was here having cucumber sandwiches with Fluttershy all day..."
"This has been going on for a few days now." I intervened.
"We surely you have more clues than just 'Discord did it', right?" asked Discord as he drank the glass part of his drink.
"Well, the mare that attacked me said something about 'I was disrupting the order' or something." I remembered. Discord did a spit-take all over me and my mother the second he heard me say these words. Thankfully, the glass liquidized.
"Did you say... order?" asked Discord with a look of shock on his face.
"So you DO know something!" exclaimed out my mom with a triumphant look on her face. However, when she looked at Discord, all she saw was pure fear in the draconequus's eyes.
"Discord, this is so unlike you" I pointed out "What do you have on your mind?"
"I... I don't feel very comfortable talking about... Her!" said Discord who was now shivering slightly "If you want straight answers though, you could always talk to that orange one."
"Who, Applejack?" asked my mother curiously.
"No, no, the other one" Discord corrected her.
"Um... Little Mac?" she was guessing by this point.
"Princess Twilight, one would think you wouldn't forget the worst day of Ponyville's life..."
My mother's eyes widened in realization. She looked down slightly in depression. I noticed this immediately and tried to talk with her, but she just turned her head away from me.
"If we have to talk with her, then I suppose we have no choice..." she said quietly, but loud enough that both Discord and I could hear "Midnight, I'm sorry I had to drag you into this, but you trust me, right?"
I nodded slowly, not really wanting to hear more of what my mother was saying.
"Well now, we have to meet somepony that is like that, only incurable" she explained somberly "We have to meet with with a mare named Scootaloo..."
Next Chapter: Scootaloo Estimated time remaining: 2 Hours, 58 MinutesAuthor's Notes:
Don't go yet! We may have learned the truth of his red streak of hair, but what's this about Scootaloo? Yep, we still have a whole story to complete! Well, wait another five years to get it! Because I'm really slow with posting new content! Yeah! (lol)
Oh, and I didn't misspell Tails of the Abyss. It's meant to be like MLPverse Tales of the Abyss, which I recently got for Burthmas. It's awesome by the way, and I highly recommend it!
C.E. stands for Celestian Era.
Be sure to comment on this story so I can eventually make it better!
