Chapter 11: Spring's Story

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Thread had recently told my friends and me about his experience with Rage Quit last night. Naturally, like everypony else, I was awaiting his arrival into my house. The house was quiet, and although it's usually like this at my mom's cottage, this quiet was eerie, as if everything, not just me, was waiting for the visitor to arrive.

I walked into the living room where my mother was sitting on the couch cuddling with her bunny Angel and reading a book on coping with weird pregnancy symptoms. She knew about the stallion coming over tonight, and it didn't help that she believed Rage Quit to be my coltfriend.

"Mom, you don't need to be reading that" I smirked "You're too far into your pregnancy to be having any major symptoms."

"Oh, I know" she smiled back "But it's always nice to read over things just to be sure."

"Suit yourself..." I rolled my eyes.

"So, you're coltfriend is coming over, is he?" asked my mom "How thrilling! You're father and I met in the night. Oh, I'll never forget that special night when we looked into each others eyes and knew it to be true love..."

"Mom, for the ten-trillionth time, he's not my coltfriend!" I argued with my mother "Bubblegum told me he was at least in his late thirties. Why would I like somepony that was thirty?"

"Well, I'm in my early fourties, so maybe he'll consider dating me?" my mom said as slyly as possible (her being Fluttershy and all).

"Mm-hmm..." I deadpanned my tone of voice "Anyway, he might be here tonight, so don't be embarrassing, okay?"

"Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye!" Fluttershy swore under the Pinkie Promise.

"Good. Now, will you-"

Before I could finish, we heard somepony knocking at our door. Walking over to said door, I opened it, revealing a light blue Pegasus with a black robe over his body. This must've been, or at least I hope it was, Rage Quit.

"Um, hey there!" I greeted "I guess you're Rage Quit? Nice to meet you! My name's Spring Blossom and-"

"Miss Bubblegum has told me a lot about you" Rage Quit interrupted "She says you're a 'tomboy', whatever that means. No matter, I have come here tonight to mingle with you."

"Oh, well, um... please come in!" I said, unsure of what to think of him.

"Thank you."

"This is a very nice cottage, Miss Fluttershy" commented Rage Quit to my mother "There is an assortment of both fauna and flora, both of which are blended perfectly to the style of the building."

"Oh, why thank you..." my mother blushed, causing me to roll my eyes "I do try my best to keep everything looking nice."

We had all settled down for a nice cup of tea once Rage Quit had entered our home. The second my mother laid eyes on our guest when he arrived, I think her heart went halfway to heaven. I bet she was thinking that 'Ragey' over here was the perfect candidate for taking care of the new baby. After a little while of talking, Rage Quit took a look at my mom's bulging abdomen.

"I see you're with a child" Rage Quit pointed out "How long until it is born?"

"Just a little while left to go!" said Fluttershy cheerfully "Although, I suppose if you want the exact time, I'm supposed to be due in just a few days. Even though I've gone through this before, it's so exciting and scary at the same time."

"Well, I suppose congratulations are in order" said our Pegasus visitor "By the way, where is the child's father? Is he out at this current time?"

"My dad has, unfortunately, passed on" I said with a small sigh "He died from a rare disease known as the Blue Poison."

Rage Quit's eyes widened at the mention of the disease that took my father. He looked at me like a dog who had just done something terribly wrong. I didn't know why, but I was about to find out.

"Did you just say... Blue Poison?" asked Rage Quit.

"Um, yeah?" I uneasily answered "Did somepony close to you die of the same disease?"

"No..." Rage Quit answered simply "But I know the stallion responsible for it all. Unfortunately, personally."

"Well, you mind telling us his name?" I asked "I'm sure we'd all like to know the pony that was responsible for the death of my own dad!"

"Yes, I would like to know actually" stated Fluttershy "Um, if that's okay with you."

"I cannot say who it is" said Rage Quit "As much as I would love to help your cause, I am still technically your enemy. My allegiance is with the high mistress."

"Jerk..." I said under my breath.

"Pardon?"

"Oh, nothing..."

"Well, this night seems to have ended quite awkwardly" stated our guest after he got up from the couch he was sitting on "I suppose I must return to-"

"Actually, is it okay if you stay a while?" suddenly asked my mom as she blushed like crazy "You know, if you're not too busy that is..."

"Well, I could manage my time to stay a bit longer..." thought Rage Quit out loud "Alright. I suppose I can stay with you for the time being... and perhaps have more of that tea you make. It is truly exceptional."

"Oh, why thank you!" my mother continued to blush, making me facehoof. Rage Quit and I were getting off to a 'great' start, and he would've been gone by now if my mom hadn't called him back. While I was sighing now, I would never know until later that my mother just single-hoofedly did the greatest thing she could ever do for me.

"So sit down, stay a while" my mom insisted as patted his seat on the couch "Why don't you tell us a bit about yourself?"

"Well, you already know my name" began Rage Quit "I am thirty-nine years old, although, I can't be too sure."

"Why?" I asked him.

"Over the years, my memory has somewhat degraded" he answered "My age was merely told to me as so I wouldn't forget it."

"Right, right..." I nodded "Please, continue."

"When I was younger," Rage Quit started up again "I used to love playing video games, hence my cutie mark..." he lifted up his robe to reveal a game controller cutie mark "Although, those days are now behind me..."

"Did you ever have a special somepony?" asked my mother.

"Yes..." he said simply "Yes I did..."

"Oh, well, is she living somewhere else?"

Without breaking his posture in any way, he said "You could say that, yes..."

"Oh, I'm so sorry..." my mom comforted Rage Quit "I didn't know..."

"Thank you" Rage Quit said.

"I'm sure with some hard work and thought, you might be able to leave the past behind" my mom "It's for the best, and I'm sure whoever she was would understand completely."

"It's not that simple, Miss Fluttershy..." said Rage Quit "She is the reason I joined the high mistress in the first place. My entire life has been devoted to her."

"Whatever do you mean?" she asked him.

"She was..." Rage Quit paused for a second to think about what he was going to say "She was my other side. The side that could show me happiness and kindness. She was the one who got me into video games, and the one who would help me when I had a bad day."

"Well that's understandable," I said "and I see why you would love her, but why would you-"

"She was also with our foal when she died..."

The room went dead silent. Nopony cried or sobbed. Nopony even moved, as if this moment was frozen in time, forever to be remembered and forever to be feared. Finally, after a tense fifteen minutes, Rage Quit broke the silence.

"*ahem*... Well, I suppose this would be a good time to leave."

"I... I..." was all I could say as the Pegasus made his way to the door.

"Yeah, I think I'm gonna stop you right there, Quity Witty..." said a female voice that seemingly came from nowhere.

"Clarity, why did you follow me?" Rage Quit said with a sigh "Why are you even here?"

"I don't know... I thought it would be fun..."

"This was supposed to be private and you violated the-" Rage spoke before being interrupted by the invisible mare.

"Oh, hush up now!" the intruder, apparently named Clarity laughed as she came visible to us , revealing herself to be a white Unicorn with a short pink mane and wearing a robe similar to Rage Quit's "I can't believe you didn't see me enter! I have worse spying skills than Skyfall and yet you still didn't notice me? Speaking of which, I know about that little 'incident' last night."

"You know of this?" Clarity had gotten the light blue Pegasus's attention "Have you informed the high mistress?"

"No" Clarity smiled "But I HAVE decide to use this knowledge to blackmail you into staying with us."

"Now listen here, Miss Clarity" my mother spoke up in her scolding tone (which really wasn't too different from her normal voice) "I don't like how you think blackmailing is a good thing! So, y'know... please stop..."

"Aww... How cute..." the intruding mare spoke sarcastically "Seriously honey, if you want to intimidate me, you're gonna have to do a lot better than pleases and thank yous, okay?"

That was it. My mother had just about enough of Clarity. Knowing exactly what she was about to do next, I grabbed Rage Quit and pulled him away from my mom's line of sight so he couldn't see her eyes. Then, she did it; her infamous stare that froze ponies and animals in their tracks. Clarity gasped at this sudden change in my mom's intimidation factor.

"What are you doing! Stop that! OH NO!!" Clarity yelled in terror before, much to my surprise, she began laughing "AHAHAHAHA!! Wow! Is that the best you can do?! I mean, seriously?!"

"W-What?" my mom trembled in fear from Clarity's immunity to her stare "How can you-"

"It just doesn't intimidate me honey" the mare smiled before she took a long yawn "Ah... You've all tired me out. I think I'll wrap this up before I go back home and tuck myself in for my beauty sleep."

Just as she finished her sentence, she aimed her horn right at my mother and began charging up a spell. I wasn't an expert on magic like Midnight or Twilight was, but I wasn't stupid enough not to know that the spell meant harm for both my mother and my unborn sibling. Without even thinking, I punched her right in the face with my front right hoof. She tumbled to the side and moaned in pain, but she quickly got back up to face us.

"So that's how you wanna play, eh?" she asked dark and intimidating grin "Well then... let's see if you like this!!" she yelled as her eyes and horn lit up in a blinding white light. All of a sudden, the room went dark and I couldn't see Rage Quit OR my mom. Finally, the area slowly began to light up again, but it appeared I was in a different dimension. It had slow flowing rivers with thick blue liquid replacing water, the skies were a dark shade of blue and most of the ground was as well. I looked around me to find that only my light blue Pegasus guest had come with me here.

"Where are we?" I asked Rage Quit "Is this, like, another world or something?"

"That's correct" stated Rage Quit "This is the X-verse. Not even I know much about this place, and only true veterans of the high mistress's team are allowed to enter and exit this place on command."

"Meaning whoever you work for trusts crazy cuckoo mare more than you?" I asked with extreme confusion.

"Oh, you're absolutely adorable when you look so confused!" laughed Clarity, who appeared a few feet in front of us "It almost makes me not really want to kill you... But then again, you DID punch my beautiful face, and for that, that's completely inexcusable!"

"Out of all my colleagues, I disliked you the most, Clarity" said Rage Quit "This won't be too difficult, since I know all of your strengths and weaknesses."

"So that automatically means I don't know yours? HA!" mocked Clarity "You have more weaknesses than me! Especially the emotional ones. Let's see now... there's the whole thing about your pregnant dead wife, being locked away for god knows how long, having your emotion ripped from your soul... The list really does go on and on."

"Can we stop talking and get to me kicking your flank from here to next Tuesday?" I shouted, not wanting to listen to Clarity's cruel words anymore "I mean, come on!"

"The child is right, I suppose..." said our opponent with a sigh "We should settle this. Two on one? Seems hardly fair... don't you think you should go easy on a lady?"

"Pffft!" I began to laugh "You? A lady? Now THAT'S a laugh!"

"I'll make you eat those words, foal" smiled Clarity.

"You wanna go? Huh?!" I shouted.

"Girl vs. Girl?" wondered Clarity "Seems fine by me. Though, you're too soft and weak to even consider the fact that you'll lose to me instantly."

"Bring it on, you lousy excuse of a mare!" I yelled with a huge smirk on my face as I got up close to her an headbutted her, whereas she did the same, leaving us in that position for a while.

"I'm going to tear you apart, you foul tomboy fo-" was all the white Unicorn could say before Rage Quit bucked her right into the blue river of goop. Apparently, as we were shouting and insulting each other, he had sneaked around us and shoved Clarity into her untimely demise.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo *gurgle*!" she shouted right before she was enveloped in the blue goop.

"Well, that certainly took care of her... even if it was a little anti-climatic..." I remarked as I gave off a cocky smile and a light chuckle at Rage Quit. However, what I saw him doing shocked me. He had his head hung and was remembering Clarity in respect. Before I could ask him why, he said...

"No matter the enemy or the motivation, a body has a soul and it deserves to be granted luck on it's journey to the afterlife."

"You do this a lot?" I asked.

"I began doing it when my wife died" he answered "I feel it's a way to respect her if I respect my enemies."

"That's very noble of you" I smiled kindly as I patted him on the back "Now, how're we gonna get out of here?"

Before we knew it, and much to our surprise, we were both back in my mother's cottage. This surprised my mother and made her jump. For a second, I thought her water would break from such a scare.

"Oh my goodness! You're back!" said my mom "I knew that you'd make it out okay! Are you hurt? Do you need medical attention?!"

"Mom, cool your jets!" I assured as I let out a sigh "We're both fine. That mare isn't going to hurt us anytime soon."

"Oh thank goodness. I was really worried for both your lives..."

"I can assure you Miss Fluttershy that your daughter was in good hooves" said Rage Quit "Now, I must truly return now. You've taught me well, but I must still unfortunately work for the high mistress. She has something I need."

"I understand" I nodded "Please, come back soon!"

"I promise..." he said before he exited out of our home.

"Y'know, I think I kinda like him..." I said with a smirk of appreciation.

"Yeah... me too..." my mother dreamily said, causing me too roll my eyes "And I especially like the way he moves his flank back and forth..."

"Yeah, you need a husband, mom..." I facehoofed.

"That family seemed so caring..." I said as I watched the night fade away on top of a house "Perhaps I can find peace there? No, don't be ridiculous Rage Quit! You have a mission to fulfill."

I stared off into the light of the moon.

"But maybe..."

"Talking to yourself are we?" asked a voice I knew all too well "That's a strange way to spend a night... Maybe I'll try it sometime! *giggle*"

"Hello Miss Bubblegum," I greeted the young, pink maned Earth Pony "How are you today? Have you brought your special treat?"

"You know it baby!" Bubblegum winked before she reached around and pulled out two ice cream sticks. She gave one of them to me.

"Ah... never gets old..." said my companion as she licked her ice cream "So, I'm guessing you met with Springy's family, eh?"

"Yes. They seemed to be nice mares..." I said.

"You know, Fluttershy has been looking for a new husband lately..." Bubblegum said with a smile on her face "You might be the perfect candidate for her liking, right?"

"W-what are you talking about?!" I blushed for the first time in a long while "I simply do not have enough time to settle down and begin a family... I'm sure she doesn't think THAT highly of me anyway."

"Well, good for you because you've got a head-start on the family thing!" Bubblegum tried to convince me "Besides, once we foil the-mare-who's-trying-to-kill-Midnight's plan, you'll have to settle down eventually, right?"

"Or I could begin a new journey" I suggested "A journey helping me find who I really am in life. A journey to help me understand this world's existence better."

"But aren't you on that journey already?" asked my partner before taking a lick from her ice cream "I mean, think about it... You're going from house-to-house learning about friendship as the week goes on by. Surely that means something, right?"

"..."

"Ragey?" said Bubblegum after a while.

"Yes, Miss Bubblegum?" I answered.

"Can you tell me the story about how you got your cutie mark again?"

"...why not?" I smiled before I cleared my throat "It was a summer afternoon. My mother and I had gone out for some shopping..."
