Hot Times At Canterlot High
Chapter 5: Loneliness and Accidents
Previous ChapterHomeroom
Sonata walked into her homeroom as the teacher was reading off students' names. Everyone stopped and looked at her, making her heart beat faster. Even the teacher seemed to be surprised to see her.
When he finally snapped out of it, the teacher turned to her. "Are you... joining us?" he asked.
Sonata looked at the others before nodding nervously. "Yeah, um... Principle Celestia told me to come here..."
The teacher nodded. "Take a seat, then... Name?"
"Um... Sonata Dusk..." she said softly.
"Sorry, what?" asked the teacher, ready to write her name on the roster.
"U-Uh... Sonata Dusk," the ex-siren repeated louder.
The teacher wrote her name down and nodded. "Alright, uh... Have a seat."
Sonata nodded and looked around the room, glancing at the floor occasionally as she did not want to meet the other students' eyes. Once she saw an empty desk at the back, she turned and began walking around the border of the room. As she approached the desk, the students in the desks beside it watched her, making her even more nervous. Once she got to the desk, she was way too nervous to sit down.
"Miss Dusk?" asked the teacher, making her gasp and look up at him. "A seat?"
Sonata nodded quickly before looking back down at the desk, slowly sitting down. She felt it hard to do given that her legs were wobbly from her nervousness as the students on either side of her eyed her with a look of hatred.
The teacher then set the clipboard down. "All right... Ten minutes till classes start," the teacher announced as Sonata laid her head on her desk and covered it with her hands.
Block 1
After Homeroom, Sonata waited till the other kids had left before leaving, pulling out her schedule from her pants pocket.
"O-Okay..." she said to herself, reading the paper. "Math... Okay... I can do this..." she told herself, trying to build self-confidence while still believing it'll be extremely tough.
The ex-siren continued down the hall until she found her class. Luckily, she was the first one in and found a seat at the back. The teacher looked up from a book and closed it, obviously noticing who she was. After hesitating, he got up and walked over to her, the blue girl looking up at him with a look of uncertainty.
"Just transferred in?" he asked her, receiving a nod. "And what's your name? I have to add you to the class list..."
"Uh... Sonata... Dusk..." the girl replied in a meek voice.
The teacher hesitated, obviously thinking about something, before turning and walking back to his desk.
After about another minute or two, the other students began entering, all either stopping or walking slower as they saw Sonata. The ex-siren hung her head and sighed as the kids all took their seats, a particular lime green girl with white hair sitting beside her. Out of the corner of her eye, Sonata could see that this girl didn't have an angry look, but more of a thoughtful one. But, when Sonata turned to look at her the girl turned away and began taking her math book and notebook from her backpack. The ex-siren sighed again and looked down at her desk, holding back a tear.
"So what's English like?" Twilight asked as she sat down.
"We look at themes in books, movies and stuff," Sunset replied and sat down next to her. "We also look at sentence structure, poetry, grammar, all the usual stuff. Our teacher is Miss Prose. She started working at the school a year ago and is pretty easy going from what I've seen."
"Really? I thought teachers were supposed to act professionally during school hours?"
"I do," the aforementioned teacher stated as she walked into the classroom. She had white skin, orange hair tied up in a ponytail, and blue eyes. She also wore glasses, an off-white skivvy, a dark blue trench coat, black pants, and scuffed sneakers. She then took off her jacket and draped it over the back of her seat. "Unlike most, I understand a kid's take on school quite well. This is my first job since graduating from University, so I try to take a calmer approach. Make things interesting. That sort of thing."
Miss Prose walked over to her desk and pulled out a stack of papers and handed them to Twilight.
"Twilight, since you're early could you put one on each desk? We're doing poetry for the next fortnight and today's lesson will cover these handouts."
"I'll help," Sunset added and split the stack between them.
"I wonder if there are similarities to poetry from Eque-- I mean, from my homeland," Twilight hastily said. "Because I'm from, um... out of town and--"
"Are ponies usually terrible liars?" Prose asked with a smirk.
"How did you--?"
"I saw some YouTube videos detailing a few times one of your friends 'pony'd up', did some research about ancient legends regarding magical equines, and asked around school. No big deal," their teacher replied.
"So a magical pony princess from another dimension shows up and you're perfectly fine with that idea?" Sunset asked as she continued to place papers.
"Pretty much. S'not like Twilight is flaunting her royal status and everyone else seems cool with it."
The bell rang for class to start as students filed in and took their seats.
"Today, we begin learning about poetry," Miss Prose began. "If everyone could start reading the two sets on your desk, after fifteen minutes we'll compare the differences and similarities between standard poetry and modern day song lyrics."
Block 2
Twilight sat down at a table in her science class, waiting for it to start.
"Oh, this is going to be so fun..." she beamed as Spike looked up at her from the floor.
"Excited much?" he asked her.
"Of course! It's... science..." she answered with a smile.
Spike rolled his eyes with a smile as the teacher, a yellow woman with blue hair down to her shoulders, walked over to her.
"You must be Twilight," she said with a smile. "A pleasure to have you in our class."
"Well, it's a pleasure to be here," Twi replied with a smile as the teacher spotted Spike.
"Oh..." she said, sounding slightly excited. "Is this your talking dog I've heard about?"
"Yes, I am," said Spike proudly.
"Well, this certainly is going to be an interesting day," the teach said. "We promise not to dissect him," she said jokingly as Twilight smiled.
"Uh... What's dissect?" asked Spike as the other kids all came in.
Twilight only chuckled at his question and looked ahead, waiting for class to start. As she did, she saw Sunset enter the room and smiled, waving her over.
"Twilight?" Asked the orange girl, walking over to her table. "You're in this class?" She then sat down in the seat beside her.
"Yep," Twi said happily. "They stuck me in the higher level classes as a 4th Year since I already know everything else."
Sunset let out a chuckle as she opened her backpack. "Lucky you... I,on the other hand, had to start from the beginning." She set a couple books down on the table.
Twilight eyed the books and began looking through her pack. "Uh..."
"You don't have them, do you?" Asked Sunset.
The purple girl looked over at her and smiled sheepishly. "I don't think so..."
Shimmer rolled her eyes as she slid her books between them on the table. "We'll share. We're supposed to find a lab partner today for our next project, anyways, so... How 'bout it?"
The new girl smiled and nodded. "Sounds great, thanks. I'll see if I can get the books for myself this weekend."
Sunset gave her a smile before looking at the teacher.
Class went by as you would expect; Everyone was given an assignment and the partners began working. Twilight and Sunset stared at their vial, wondering if they got it right.
"I think that's it," Shimmer said, eyeing her partner.
Twilight rubbed her chin. "Certainly looks it..."
Both girls sat back before Twi reached for it. Not realizing her partner was doing so, Sunset did the same. Their hands touched as the both went to pick up the vial. They quickly looked at each other before there was a spark of magic from where their hands touched. They pulled away and looked down at the vial to see it change its color to a dark purple.
"What..." Sunset started to ask before the vial began to shake.
Letting out a gasp, both girls ducked as there was a loud POOF, a puff of purple smoke coming from the vial. Twi and Sunset looked at the potion again before eyeing each other.
"Um... Well..." Twilight started, rubbing the back of her head. "Not sure what that was all about... or what exactly that.. spark was from..."
Shimmer gave her a light smile before looking around the classroom, seeing everyone staring at them. Letting out a chuckle, she raised her hand slightly.
"It's okay..." she said reassuringly, before looking at the teacher. "Our bad..."
The teacher gave a light smile. "Well, I was right about this being an interesting day..."
Twilight gave her a smile before looking at the mysterious concoction, wondering what it did exactly.
