Chapter 1: Fire Fly

Fire Fly

All was quiet except for the gentle pitter patter of the light rain hitting the red-orange leaves of the trees and the tall blades of grass rooted deep into the earth of the meadow. Fluttershy sent a glance towards the tree she was leaning on; It was her only protection from the rain. It's old oak made her back feel a bit itchy, and the leaves and branches didn't supply sufficient enough shielding from the sky-bound assault from the rain, but it worked.

She shot a look towards the ground and let out a quiet sigh. The rain had been raising and falling in intensity on its own accord, and she was getting tired of being out in the open. It wasn't terribly cold, but she didn't take a liking to being wet unless she was soaking in a tub full of warm bath water. This, however, was a chilly drizzle from the sky courtesy of the pegusi.

She zoned out, losing herself in thought. Why would Rainbow Dash want to speak to her out here? More importantly, why did Rainbow Dash want to speak to her in private? These questions circled her mind like a shark surrounding it's prey. She sat lost in thought for several more moments before something pulled her out of the foggy state of mind she was previously. The rain stopped, not abruptly, but it simply sizzled out like a small flame. She shot a look towards the sky to find that the clouds had drifted on to soak some other area in Ponyville. They were just that, but they were scrambling, instead of one direction with the wind. This revealed a bright full moon that covered the field in it's natural light.

"Wierd..." She thought aloud in a quizzical whisper.

"I pulled a few strings with the weather team." A familiar voice said matter-of-factly.

She shot her gaze in the direction she heard the voice. A cerulean blue mare with a mane that withstood the entire color spectrum stood before her. She trotted slowly over to Fluttershy and sat next to her. Fluttershy couldn't explain it, but the warmth of Rainbow's presence seemed to make sitting under the old oak tree felt like paradise.

"So, um, Rainbow?" She called, as if to make sure was indeed her, which it unarguably was.

"Yeah?" She replied, laying her head far enough to gently press the back of her head against bark of the old oak.

"Why did you ask me come out here? Not only that, but why here?" Fluttershy asked.

"Well-" Rainbow began, scratching the back of her head with her hoof nervously "- it just seemed fitting for what the night beholds, ya know?" she said nervously.

"Oh?" Fluttershy said.

Rainbow Dash nodded.

Silence flooded the area, this time without the steady pitter patter of rain as white noise. Rainbow let out a sigh, shaken slightly by the nervous anticipation that her future actions were bringing her.

"So, um, there is a reason why I called you out here." She admitted.

Fluttershy wiggled around, trying to get into a comfortable position. "Yeah?"

"I kind of suck at explaining these things, but uh, here I go." Rainbow said.

Fluttershy's ears perked up as the words tumbled out of Rainbow's mouth like an avalanche having a nervous breakdown.

Silence covered them once more, a set of mixed emotions surrounded the two. By then, the moon was at it's peak. Brighter than a shooting star, higher than the tallest skyscraper. It set the mood up quite a bit.

Fluttershy let out a nervous sigh before setting her sights on Rainbow once more, who had been doing the same, but for a longer period of time.

"You know-" Fluttershy began, "-All those heavy thoughts are weighing you down." She said with a smile, trying to cut down the awkward in a forest of quirkiness.

Rainbow blushed and let out a nervous giggle. "Y-yeah." she agreed.

It seemed silence would become more and more apparent as the night progressed, and Fluttershy wasn't ready for it. She let out a sigh before seeing a small flash of light in the dark.  To her surprise, a small firefly lit itself up in front of her. Normally, something so small wouldn't even phase her, but it was October on a chilly night. Normally you would see them out and about around late June or mid-July.

Fluttershy's eyes widened, this filled her up with a cold nostalgia, chilling her to the bone. When the two mares were fillies, they would play in a field similar to this one. She would remember how fire flies would cross their paths every once in a while. This memory was enough confidence she needed. A smile stretched across her face as she turned her focus back on the rainbow-maned pegasus.

"Fluttershy, are you alright? you seem kind of..." She trailed off as Fluttershy leaned in, giving her a light peck on the cheek.

Cerulean blue turned a crimson red as Fluttershy pulled away, her mind exploding in every which way.

"Whoa, that was..." Rainbow trailed off once more.

"Awesome?" Fluttershy said, a sheepish smirk formed on her face.

"He he, yeah. Awesome." Rainbow Dash said, smiling.

They sat at that tree, leaning against each other reflecting on foalhood memories as the night sky was slowly tinted with a red-orange light. It was one of those moments that felt so surreal that it had to be a delusion, but was inexplicably real.

Rainbow Dash exhaled and glanced at Fluttershy, who was watching the sunrise.

"It's getting early, I think we need to head home for a nap or something." Rainbow suggested.

Fluttershy squinted her eyes, contemplating the idea before looking up at her and giving a nod.

They stood up and began making their way side-by-side towards Fluttershy's cottage. The walk wasn't terribly long and the two didn't want it to end, but like all good things, it had to. This thought brought a smile to Rainbow's face because she knew ending one good thing makes room for others. As they arrived to the charming little cottage, Fluttershy became a little jittery. Rainbow tried to ignore it out of the thought that she could have been feeling the same.

"Here we are." Rainbow Dash said.

Fluttershy smiled in an awkward way. "Yeah..."

"So, uh, I guess I'll catch you later?" Rainbow Dash asked.

"I suppose so." She said, walking in.

Rainbow Dash waved. "See ya, I guess."

Rainbow Dash sighed in relief, happy that she finally got what she needed off of her chest. She spun around and walked down the narrow path away from Fluttershy's abode when she heard something from behind that caused her to freeze in her place.

"Wait!"

"Huh?" She spun around and found that Fluttershy was at the door.

"Maybe you could possibly stay here..." She muttered.

"Huh?" Rainbow Dash repeated.

"I said maybe you could stay, er, here for the moment. You know, and uh, rest up?" She repeated, a little more volume in her voice.

"O-oh! Er..." Rainbow Dash was tongue tied. "S-sure!" She said.

This good thing wasn't ready to end yet.
