Chapter 1: Waning Hope.

~ CHAPTER 1 ~

The throne room. Perhaps the only place Princess Twilight felt absolute dread. She appeared as a young filly, one whom had the burden of responsibility shoved on her at an early age. Having crafted the Kingdom of Friendship herself, Princess Twilight was prestigious throughout the entirety of Equestria, and was also one of the main ruling bodies of the five kingdoms, and unfortunately, the one with the most desirable location. Princess Twilight held the center of Equestria, where her region was filled with lush lands, and her kingdom sat upon a beautiful mountain allowing her citizens to gather a broad scope of the entire landscape. Princess Twilight took a moment to glance around her throne room upon entering it, despite being supposedly younger than most of the other rulers, she was fairly calm with the idea of ruling. She smiled softly to herself as she'd looked up at the long intertwining vines and branches of leaves which coursed up different areas of all the walls, giving the room itself quite a serene forest touch to it. Pale sunlight leaked in between a multitude of cracks, gracing the princess' face as she made her way slowly over towards her throne itself. She patted her muzzle then with a yawn.

As she'd arrived at the throne, she only stared at it for a few seconds with half closed eyes. She dreaded the throne, and hated the idea that so much power could be associated with such a simple thing. She didn't want to rule, but she knew she had to. She was an alicorn, and one of the few alicorns in existence. She of the three, was the Princess of Twilight, as well as the Princess of Friendship, and she knew she needed to fill that role no matter what. But she couldn't help but wonder, what if she didn't have to? What if somewhere far away, she was different, happier, and ultimately, not upon this lonesome throne? What happens if she had friends to guide her along the way? A mentor perhaps? The filly just smirked to herself in a amusement, closing her eyes as she'd chuckled. This was no time for filly's tales. And soon enough, Princess Twilight took her place upon the throne, adjusting her rear into the soft elegant red pillow which rested atop of it, before taking in a deep breath, and nodding to herself.

"P-Princess Twilight!" A guard exclaimed as he'd burst through the throne room doors almost in that exact instant.

Princess Twilight's eyes widened a bit as she'd blinked. "Y-Yes? Is everything alright?" Well, that was fast, she'd thought

"Both King Sombra and Nightmare Moon have arrived your highness! Your orders?" The Twilight Guard immediately lowered his frame in the form of a bow afterwords.

Princess Twilight didn't reply to this as she'd just lowered her head with a light sigh before smiling softly in regards to her guard. She then glanced up at him, baring a slightly serious look as she'd exclaimed simply. "You can let them up my loyal pony. I will speak with them now."

The guard rose with a salute, "Of course my princess! I shall inform them with haste!" As he'd quickly made his way out soon afterwords.

Princess Twilight gulped as she'd ran a hoof over her elegant necklace which appeared to bare six magical and different colored pendants. She'd also adjusted her crown for a moment as she bit her tongue a bit and squinted one eye, as if struggling to find out a way to put it in an even position.

"WELL, WELL, WELL....why look who it is?"

Princess Twilight's eyes widened as she'd suddenly heard her throne room doors creak open yet again.

All of the twilight guards assorted in the room almost immediately unsheathed their lances as they'd fastened them on the two individuals who'd entered the throne room along with their closest consorts. It was none other then Princess Nightmare Moon herself, alongside the infamous King Sombra.

Princess Twilight looked upon the two and their consorts with a slightly uncomfortable expression.

Nightmare Moon smirked softly as she'd made her way towards the center of the room, before swiping her hoof, manifesting not only a large black banquet table but chairs to go along with it. She snickered softly to herself, as she'd gestured over towards Princess Twilight. "Now now Princess Twilight, don't look at us like that. It's been so long, hasn't it?"

King Sombra grumbled before he'd lowered himself into one of the seats. "Graaaaah, I do hope you don't plan to sit upon that throne while talking to us, whelp."

Princess Twilight appeared slightly nervous, as she'd glanced towards the upper right, at one of the open creaks in her throne room, as she didn't fail to notice with these two present in one place, the sunlight faded from the entire location. It'd become consumed, as shadows and night now only infested the palace grounds. Princess Twilight of course didn't have time to dwell on such thoughts as she'd rose from her throne, and then began trotting down silently towards the makeshift banquet table, and reassuringly she placed her hoof over her pendant as she'd gulped yet again, before finding her way to the rest of them, of course accompanied by two of her guards, and taking a seat.

Nightmare Moon herself took a seat soon afterwords as well as she'd glanced over to one of her supposed companions. "Trixie, do prepare us some snacks if you will."

The light blue mare then bowed her head in a form of respect as she'd smirked, "Of course your highness." She proceeded to use her magic to summon an assortment of delicacies, such as cookies, drinks, and much more which she'd casually began to spread about the table.

Nightmare Moon proceeded to lean forward as she'd just smirked at Twilight, affectionately as she'd even licked her own muzzle some. "Mhmhmhm....."

Princess Twilight shifted uncomfortably in her seat as she'd refused to make eye contact with Nightmare Moon.

King Sombra sighed heavily as he'd groaned. "Graaaaaah, have we come to sit in silence or speak? You two fools have wasted enough of my time as is."

Nightmare Moon however drifted from the topic of today's discussion. "Do I make you uncomfortable Princess Twilight?"

Princess Twilight didn't answer.

Nightmare Moon only chuckled as she'd leaned black in her seat slyly, amused to say the least. "Nonetheless I shall never understand how you managed to best my sister. To single hoofedly take her out and gain reigns over the sun itself, impressive, almost makes me worry. But Solar Flare was far too hot-headed for her own good anyhow. This new Sunset Shimmer however seems that she'll make for a good ruler in the fire drenched Badlands, I look forward to seeing what sort of apprentice my sister has raised."

Princess Twilight sighed, as she'd sat up straight before exclaiming. "If I can I'd like to get to why I called you all here."

Both King Sombra and Nightmare Moon appeared intrigued from then on, as they'd sat patiently, waiting for the filly to continue.

Princess Twilight stated simply. "I- I would like to discuss peace. If possible, I believe it would be the most logical solution to our problems."

King Sombra however burst into laughter then. "GRAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! What, do you worry now that your head will roll Princess Twilight!? Now that you have obviously become the disadvantaged one in the war? You fear for your own life is that it? Such a pitiful little whelp, to resort to a peace treaty discussion!"

Princess Twilight's cheeks turned red as she'd immediately shook her head desperately, raising a hoof. "N-No that's not it, it's just-"

Nightmare Moon cut off the princess then. "Hah, Princess Twilight. You are a lone standing beacon of light in Equestria, you have managed to best Princess Solar Flare as well as hold your own and establish this kingdom for many years now. You are a filly alicorn who has proven herself more than capable to be a liable threat. Yet you've created a Kingdom of Friendship and peace, the only in all of Equestria. A kingdom built on the morales of acceptance. It is no surprise to me that you want to establish a lasting peace in the land." She'd paused, "But I shall not allow you to run from this now that we're so far in." Princess Nightmare Moon glared at her for a second, before grinning fiercely.

Princess Twilight's eyes widened and she couldn't bare to look away from the Princess of the Night in that moment. A chill ran down her spine. But just as quick as that look of slight fear had appeared, she regarded Nightmare Moon with an intense glare. "I'm not afraid of you."

And although remaining silent in the background, a chill ran down King Sombra's spine as he regarded Princess Twilight in that moment. And for a split second, he could feel himself, just how Princess Twilight had managed to remain in control for so long despite her apparent innocence.

Nightmare Moon leaned forward yet again. "It is not your skill Princess Twilight that has put you into such a predicament in the war. Did you think I hadn't noticed? No no no Princess Twilight, you are far more capable than that. You bested my sister herself, it is unlike you to simply wane in your battle strategy and tactics. You are far too smart. So it leads me to wonder, what could possibly cause you to stray from the path of victory?" She'd paused yet again before closing her eyes halfway. "Besides your own inner turmoil?" She leaned back yet again. "It seems you have been questioning yourself, your purpose, it has distracted you, and costed you..."

King Sombra added in. "Grah, besides! What I wouldn't give to best you myself, the one Princess whose managed to hold this mountain for so many years. I will see your head roll one of these days." He'd grinned himself as he'd glanced over at Nightmare Moon then. "As well as yours, Princess of the Night."

Nightmare Moon didn't even toss King Sombra a glance as she'd groaned a bit. "Hah, don't flatter yourself you mere unicorn. I shall destroy you after I am done taking over Princess Twilight's Kingdom." She'd given Princess Twilight a look of affection then, before munching on a cookie. "Hmhmhm, nothing will please me more Princess Twilight, than to watch as your precious kingdom crumbles before you. But I will keep you around to see it, I will have you watch simply so I can see that petrified expression that I know you're hiding deep within from me. And once all is lost, you will beg me for mercy, and maybe then, once you're defeated and broken, may I be satisfied."

Princess Twilight just sighed tiredly before looking upon the two of them in disappointment. "So there is no chance of convincing either of you then?"

Nightmare Moon and King Sombra each remained silent, before shaking their heads simply.

Princess Twilight glanced to the lower right with a simple frown. "Then I thank you two for coming. We will resume the ongoing war once each of us is settled into our own Kingdoms once again. I will make preparations for your safe returns." She sluggishly rose from the seat, before lowering her head and steadily making way back to her throne.

King Sombra frowned heavily, "Truly? Was that it? Did that little whelp call us all the way out here for that simple question? That idiotic question? GRAH!!!! NONSENSE!"

Nightmare Moon snickered as she'd raised a brow at the departing Princess Twilight only muttering. "Oh hush, it is our rights as the ruling bodies of the Kingdoms to be able to call upon one another for these neutral meetings monthly, this is business, nothing more. Well, for me, it's more so quite an enjoyable game." Nightmare Moon squinted a bit as she called out to Princess Twilight then, questioningly. "OH! And Princess Twilight! Would you ever be so kind as to offer us rooms for the night?"

Princess Twilight paused on her way back to the throne, as she'd just glanced back at Nightmare Moon then. She flashed the night princess a gentle smile before nodding simply and just muttering, "Mhm, my guards shall show you to your rooms. Do make yourselves at home as you prepare for the journey back...."

Nightmare Moon nodded, pleased as she smirked yet again. "Of course, I look forward to getting to know you a bit better, Princess Twilight."

And Princess Twilight looked upon her lonesome throne yet again, before sighing heavily and taking a seat upon it. And sadly, nothing has changed.
