Chapter 1: Sadness Is For Ponies Who Don't Know What Happiness Feels Like!

Sadness Is For Ponies Who Don't Know What Happiness Feels Like!

The library was tranquil. Not a single soul has wandered in all day. Twilight Sparkle let out a sigh. She had been sorting books that whole day and she was generally tired of it. She was just about finished when suddenly the bell attached to the door sounded off in a quick jingle. Twilight glanced up in the direction of the door to find none other than the Great and Powerful Trixie.

"Oh hey Trixie!" She greeted her warmly.

"Hello Twilight Sparkle." She said in her usual egotistical yet formal way.

"What can I help you with?" Twilight asked, placing the last book on the shelf trotting over to the caped mare.

Trixie recoiled slightly at the question, as if she was shocked or scared. "O-oh! Um, to be honest, I came to see you! Since uh, we are friends and such, right?" She said nervously.

Twilight giggled and nodded. "Yeah, Trixie. We are friends!" She said with a smile that seemed to irradiate warmth.

Trixie hesitated a moment before half smiling back and removing her pointy magician hat and hanging it on the hat rack conveniently placed by the right side of the old oak door.  The cape, of course, came next. Trixie trotted over to Twilight and watched as she placed the last of the encyclopedias on their correct shelves. Twilight turned around fully to greet the mare.

"So, how have you been?" She asked, trotting over to the kitchen to start a kettle of tea.

"I've been good, I suppose" Trixie said, sitting at the table in the middle of the room.

"That's good!" Twilight called from the kitchen.

Trixie couldn't find an appropriate response, so she remained silent until Twilight came into view again, this time holding a tray of with a silver kettle and two cups that accompanied it. She sat the tray down and sat beside Trixie. An awkward amount of silence blanketed the area.

Trixie's eyes darted around the room. She was about to drop the question, but didn't know how to go about it. Should she be casual, or use somewhat of a different tone to convey her emotions through. She looked to Twilight and suddenly realized that she had been watching her for sometime. Probably since she made that loud gulp a few moments before.

"Are you alright? You look a little..." Twilight's voice trailed off.

"Nervous?" Trixie finished.

"Yeah, nervous." Twilight said.

"Well, I-" She paused. "I am."

"Um..." Twilight sipped her tea and searched her mind, trying to find a correct way to address the situation. Trixie was a sort of hard candy with a gooey sweet center. She was a good pony on the inside. Though, on the outside she tended to be quite the egomaniac and who was a sore loser. Last time Twilight had a bad encounter with this mare, she was baring the Alicorn Amulet. This particular amulet gave a pony three things. Unlimited power, a bad alignment, and one hell of a horrifying temperament.

"Would you mind telling me why Trixie?" She asked.

Trixie sat in silence for just a moment. Contemplating on how to go about the explanation of her current dilemma. "Well..." she began, even as she started with a simple word, it choked her.

She took a deep breath and began. "They still look at me with those eyes."

"Well that is to be expected, gaining a pony's trust is-"

"NOT THAT!" Trixie shouted angrily. She immediately realized that the violet mare didn't deserve the random outburst. "I'm sorry, it's just.... bending my mind." She admitted.

"It's alright" Twilight accepted the apology, maintaining a placid expression.

"At least when I was performing, they looked at me with disapproval. Now they look upon me as if I was some sort of monster...." She said, her voice slowly morphing into this monotone whisper that seemed to barely linger out of her mouth.

"Why would they compare you to a monster?" Twilight asked.

"Because of the amulet incident..." She said, her head tilted downward and her ears flattened at the memory.

Twilight let out a sigh.

"You know, sometimes I wonder if I should just stop..." Trixie continued.

"Stop what?"

Trixie ignored Twilight's question and continued. "Just stop trying to make myself into something I know I'm not. Great and powerful? I can't even beat an Ursa-minor!" She ranted.

"Well you know-" Twilight attempted to speak once more but was cut off by Trixie again.

"I'm getting to the point where I just want to end it..."

"End wh-" Twilight started but quickly shut her mouth when she realized what she meant.

Trixie began to sob quietly, tears slowly streaking her cheeks and dripping from her chin.

They sat in silence before Twilight broke it.

"No."

"What?"

"I said 'No'!" Twilight raised her voice.

Trixie flinched at the mares sudden change in tone.

Twilight grabbed her hoof, causing a crimson shade to spread itself across Trixies cheeks at the alicorn's suddenness.

"Listen Trixie. Life is a pretentious game full of obstacles and situations you are forced to deal with at some point! But one thing you need to realize is that you choose to succeed and fail. You giving up is your own choice. It's not that you can't succeed, it's that you won't succeed." Twilight explained.

"What do you mean I won't succeed?"

"You're giving up way too easily! You need to stop pouting and try Trixie!" She said, standing up.

"But I don't..." She began but stopped herself. She knew Twilight was correct in every way.

"And I know, if you can claim to be great and powerful. You can be great and powerful!" Twilight finished with a smile.

Trixie sat there, staring at Twilight with set of watery eyes. This mare literally changed her entire outlook on life with a simple speech. Trixie grinned and stood up. She dried her eyes and embraced Twilight, who found it rather sudden, but still accepted it with open arms.

"Thank you." Trixie whispered in her ear.

"Anytime." Twilight whispered back.

They remained in each others arms for what felt like an eternity before they both found the situation a bit awkward and let go with a series of nervous laughs and blushes.

Trixie walked over to the coat rack, retrieving her pointy hat and cape. Equipping them with pride she turned around and locked eyes with Twilight. This time with the same determination she had when she first started. With ninety percent less arrogance of course! She took a deep breath before approaching Twilight. She gave her a hearth warming smile and lightly pressed her lips against her own.

Twilight looked at Trixie with both shock and confusion, but that transformed into a warm sort of feeling Twilight couldn't pin point. Trixie was the first to break the kiss. She approached the door and opened it revealing a bright sunshiny day. She gave Twilight a wink before taking her leave.

Twilight let out a happy sigh, smiling and stirring her tea.

"Damn mare forgot to drink her tea." She quipped to herself, giving off a giggle in approval of what just transpired. "Well... might as well get back to rearranging these books..."
