Chapter 186: 185. Finding the cure

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

It had been nearly three weeks since Discord had been released from his stone prison, and he was having a very difficult time adjusting to the fact that he could not use his chaotic powers because of the balance leaning more toward chaos than harmony. He had even resulted in walking to almost everywhere he went. The results being nothing more than an annoyed glance from him upon his passing other ponies.

Midnight had returned to himself once again and was dreading the coming week. It would be the fourth quarter of the new moon which meant that he would have to spend his nights alone and confined in the dungeon. He had even gone as far as to make a few spells to hinder his magic while in his were form. But there was still one problem that was plaguing him.

"DAMMIT!" Midnight shouted as he paced back and for within the alchemy lab inside the castle. It was filled to the brim with various ingredients, beakers, and other scientific related paraphernalia, to which he was using to the best of his knowledge to try and find a cure for his were curse. At one point, he tried to make a cure all spell that would completely expunge any and all spells, curses, and anything foreign from the body, but that had not worked as it would have possibly removed his transformation spell that had turned him into an Alicorn.

After many attempts and many spells later, he had failed to find a cure in those few short weeks. But he never gave up, even moving himself into the alchemy lab of the palace in order to find the cure he needed. However, even though luck was not on his side in finding a spell or item that could remove his curse, he would find luck in the fact that Screwball and her elemental minions had seemingly vanished from the face of the planet.

"I have got to find that cure, and soon." Midnight thought to himself as he gave a tired sigh, closing the book he was currently reading on about Were elders and the worg nation.

"Midnight? Are you in here?" Twilight spoke out as she poked her head into the alchemy lab, looking around to the various instruments of science before her vision fell onto her stallion sitting at a table in the far corner of the lab.

"There you are, everyone had been looking for you. It's almost sunset and you haven't went to the dungeon. Everyone was getting worried that you wouldn't make it in time." Twilight said as she came up to his side nuzzling gently into him.

"Sorry Twi, I've just been trying to find a cure for this damned curse for weeks now, plus Screwball hasn't shown hoof nor hair of herself, so you can understand why I'm feeling a little unnerved." Midnight replied giving a yawn before standing up and heading to the door with Twilight at his side.

As the two ponies made their way into the dungeon. Twilight couldn't help but feel bad for what Midnight had to go through just to keep everypony safe from himself. She looked up to him from his side as she noticed the pained expression that was present across his face. He had gone to such lengths to protect everypony, even cursing himself in order to better protect them, but only making the situation far more dangerous in the end.

Another few minutes passed as they finally arrived into the dungeon, Midnight making his way to his usual cell while letting Twilight and a couple of the guard to restrain him for the night ahead. It would be a long and slow night, but after having spent the last three days straight looking for a cure to his curse, His were form would be to tired to really put forth any effort to free himself.

Once Midnight had been fully restrained, Twilight gave his nose a gentle kiss, bringing a smile to his face before he spoke out.

"Love ya Twi, let the others know I love them as well, and don't worry, we will have this curse removed shortly. I can feel it." He smiled to her before relaxing as best he could while under his restraints.

"Love you too, I'll see you in the morning." She said softly before exiting the room. The door to the cell closing and making a loud groan before the magical locks clicked into placed, soundproofing the room from the outside world.

Twilight made her way back upstairs, heading toward Celestia's quarters. Although the sun was barely visible on the horizon, she new that her mentor would still be up late to tend to Star and to make plans on what to do in case Screwball attempted a surprise invasion of Canterlot.

As Twilight arrived at Celestia's quarters, she gave the door a gentle knock before opening it to reveal the princess laying quietly on her bed with Starlight in hoof, sound asleep on a pillow next to her. She gave a smile seeing him resting peacefully on the pillow as Celestia placed a small cover over him before tucking it around his tiny frame. The princess nodded to the balcony, giving Twilight silent instructions to meet her there so they could talk.

As they went out onto the balcony and closed the doors behind them. They gave a smile as they looked to the foal on the bed still sound asleep before beginning their conversation.

"I take it Midnight is in his cell for the night?" Celestia asked as she looked out toward the sunset.

"He is......." She trailed off for a moment as she looked out to the sunset with her mentor. "Do you think we will find the cure to the were curse?" She asked as she looked up to the princess, She looking back and giving a sad smile.

"I wish I could answer that for you Twilight, but for as long as I have lived on this planet, the worg nation has never once let any other nation know if there was a cure for were-ism. This is due to the fact that once a creature becomes a were, they will eventually want to go to the worg nation to be amongst the others that are afflicted with the same thing." She gave a heavy sigh as she watched the sun finally dip below the horizon.

They sat in silence for a few minutes before Twilight placed a hoof onto her chin in thought. Celestia noticing this and speaking up to garner her attention.

"You have that twinkle in your eye my student." She smiled to her as Twilight turned to her.

"I was wondering. If the were creatures within the worg nation change during the third quarter of the moon cycle. Wouldn't they all do different things like Midnight does? I mean, doesn't the nation take precautions against those that can pose a threat like Midnight does?"

Celestia sat there for a moment before a grin fell onto her face. "Twilight, I think we may have just found a way to save our beloved from his curse." She giggled softly as she turned, heading back into her quarters to pick up a scroll and quill, quickly writing something down before whisking it away.

"Princess?" Twilight began to ask before Celestia spoke up.

"I have just sent a letter to the Worg Elders stating that a fellow Alicorn has been stricken with the were curse. Tomorrow morning I will be taking Midnight, along with myself, to their capital to have a word with the elders. I think after a few minutes of explaining the circumstance, they will come around and give us the cure."

"What do you plan on doing?" Twilight asked seeing her mentors vague expression.

"Let's just say, I doubt they will want to go to war against an insane Alicorn." She chuckled.

Morning arrive fairly quickly for Midnight as he was awoken from his slumber by the loud groan of the cell door.

"MMmmmmmmm, I guess it's morning now since I don't feel like I want to tear everything apart." He spoke up as he felt his restraints being removed.

"It is my dear, and I have a special surprise for you." Celestia spoke up causing his ears to perk up and a smile to cross his face as he heard her voice.

"Good to hear your voice this morning love. To what do I owe the honor of your presences this morning? And what specifically do you mean by surprise?" He asked just as his blinders were removed causing him to blink a few times to adjust to the light that was flooding the room from the magical lamps that was floating in the sun princess' grasp.

"Well, I think I may have found a way to cure your curse, I'll fill you in on the way." She stated as Midnight stood up, shaking himself slightly from being cramped by the chains and bindings.

After a slow walk out of the dungeon and into the upper parts of the castle, the two had finished their discussion on what would go on while they were in the Worg nation. Although the plan was a risk, and could cause a conflict between Equestria that the Worg's, it would needed to be done in order to help Midnight, and to save Equestria in the end.

"Alright Tia, I have my regalia on, and my new title will be King Flame? Is there anything else besides what you told me to do that I should know?" Midnight asked as he adjusted a piece of his regalia.

"Just play along, I'm sure you can figure out what to say and do should things not go as planned." She chuckled as she looked to him as he kept tugging at his regalia.

"Yea, it's all good. I'll know what teh do." He said but stopped as he noticed Celestia's expression and pout. "Yea yea, I know, speak as royalty and not some country bumpkin." He sighed in annoyance before the two vanished in a flash of light.

The two reappeared in the middle of the square outside of the capital. A few different species all staring at the two Alicorn as they headed toward the gate where several guards had been placed.

"Halt please." stated a large dire wolf that looked more feral than intelligent. Midnight stood there for a moment as he looked at the wolf that was around the same size if not bigger than her was. Behind the wolf stood a minotaur that had picked up a phone and began speaking through it while staring at him and Celestia. Midnight continued to look at the dire wolf in fascination for a moment until the wolf gave a small growl before speaking up.

"What're you looking at?" He spoke up in a gruff tone.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to seem rude, It's just that you remind me of another wolf I saw a while back near my friend's home. I believe her name was........ Kogu? If I recall correctly, and she had a cub with her, I believe Kria was her name as well." He stated as he spoke to the dire wolf who quickly smiled to him.

"Well now, I wasn't aware that my great aunt had any friends, much less one that would be an Alicorn. I haven't seen her in about five years though, so, she may have lightened up. How is she doing?" He asked as his stance became a little more relaxed.

"She seemed to be doing fine, She live within the Everfree forest in Equestria with her daughter. We actually met under questionable circumstances, but after letting her know I meant no harm to her or her cub, she gradually understood that I really meant no harm and became friend rather than foe." Midnight stated as the minotaur came back out of his booth to address the two Alicorn.

"The Elders stated that you may enter." He spoke up as he pressed a small switch to open the gate.

"Alright then Tia, let's go. Oh and before I forget, Name's Midnight Flame."

"Grenald." The dire wolf state as he lifted a paw to Midnight, he doing the same as they shook.

"Nice to meet you, I would like to state as well, if you want to send your aunt a letter or anything, I don't mind taking it with me and giving it to her." Midnight smiled to the wolf who smiled back.

"Well then, I'll have it ready for when you come back out." He chuckled as he went into the small booth and picked up some parchment and a quill before starting on his letter.

The two Alicorn made their way into the capital, looking around to see it laid out much like Canterlot except for the ground was made of polished cobblestone. Far less hooves saw the ground, being replaced by softly padded feet and paws. So that made the trip unnaturally smooth for them as they walked along. As they entered the Capital building though, they looked around seeing polished limestone in place of marble. The various colors looking like a mixture of paints that had been spread across the ground and then torn up to replace the walls. Little sparkles of light emanating from every part of it as it caught the light.

After a few minutes of walking, they arrived into a large room with a large platform that swung around the center in layers. Behind each tier sat several elder looking wolves and were-wolves that looked down toward them.

"Princess Celestia, It has been some time since you have graced us with your presence." One of them spoke up as he smiled.

"It has been some time Daefon, I see that you are still looking as spry as I last saw you." She giggled to him causing him to chuckle.

"Ah, to be young again. Age has been kind to me my dear. I may not be able to go on the hunt any more, but that doesn't stop me from chasing a few pretty tails." He laughed loudly sending an echo throughout the room, and causing a few eyes to roll as well.

"So then, what pray tell has brought you before the council of Elders today? And who might this stallion be at your side?" He stated before the elders looked down to Midnight.

"First, please let me introduce you to the new king of Equestria, This is Midnight Flame." Celestia stated as he stepped forward giving a slight bow to them.

"Ah, I have heard of the new Alicorn that had arrived in Equestria, but had yet to see him until this very moment." Daefon stated before taking a quick sniff of the air, his eyes taking on a skeptical look. "And from his scent, I can tell that he has been afflicted with the curse of the were?" He stated causing quiet chatter to be heard from the rest of the council.

"It is true, he has been afflicted with the curse, that is why we are here today, to ask the council to cure him." Celestia spoke up giving a pleading look.

The group of elders looked to each other as they began to speak to each other in rumbles and growling that sound more feral than intelligent. After a few minutes of this Daefon cleared his throat as he spoke up.

"The elders have decided that giving the cure to anyone is not within our best interest. Having an Alicorn within our nation with expand our power greatly over time. So I assume you understand why we must decline." He spoke giving a disheartened smile.

"Very well then, But I would like to let the council know something ahead of time. As you know, the curse of becoming a were causes one to act and become the complete opposite of what one normally is. My king is noble and chivalrous, he despises taking a life and wishes to try and talk instead of battle or fight. I assume you understand where this will lead once he changes." She stated as she looked around to the slightly nervous expressions.

"That means nothing to us! Once he has decided to become a member of our society, he will agree to be restrained during his time of change." One of the other elders spoke up but stopped as Midnight let out a laugh.

"Do you honestly think I would abandon my loved ones and children in order to move to a nation that only accepts those who want other beings of power to be a part of their culture?" Midnight stated in an annoyed tone.

After a minute of more grumbling and growls Daefon spoke up.

"We understand your reluctance to join our society, but in time you will adjust."

"Until then, you're just going to let me run rampant and kill everything in sight?" Midnight spoke up a little louder, his tone becoming more forceful.

"What do you mean, 'let you run rampant'?" Another elders asked.

"You don't think I'm going back to Equestria like this do you?" Midnight grinned causing the elders to look to one another nervously.

"Celestia? You don't plan on leaving him here do you?" Daefon spoke up again, garnering her attention.

"Until he is cured from his curse, he cannot legally take the title of king, and until that moment he has agreed to remain outside Equestria to avoid harming any ponies." She spoke up causing the other elders to roar out.

"This is preposterous! Why would you dump him onto another notion just because he has a curse?!" One of them shouted.

"Because THIS nation has the cure to free me of this curse. Since I cannot return home for fear of hurting any and all of those I love. I will remain in the land from which the curse came from. What I do during the time I am a were is of no concern to me since it will not be within my nation." Midnight stated causing them all to roar out again.

After a short time of talking to one another Daefon stepped down from his seat into the center of the room where Midnight and Celestia were standing. His figure bearing a large thick coat that fell open in the front. The color looking almost a deep burgundy, similar to dried blood. He looked to Celestia first giving a sigh and lowering his head before pulling one part of his coat to the side and revealing a Small vial of liquid. Taking it in his paw he slowly handed it over to Midnight who took it into his magical grasp, giving it a skeptical look before casting a spell to detect if it had any poisons in it. After coming out clean Daefon spoke up.

"Take this as you are transforming into your were state. The pain will be unlike anything you have ever felt, but you will be rid of your were counterpart." He stated as he turned around to head back to his seat but stopped as Celestia gave him a warm hug from behind.

"Thank you, my friend." She sighed.

Midnight smirked seeing the old wolfs tail wagging slightly behind him. "Alright you two, get back to Equestria. You have what you came for."

After a few moments the two Alicorn gave a nod before exiting the building and heading toward the gate where Grenald sat by with a letter in his maw.

"I see you have finished your letter." Midnight stated as he plucked it from Grenald's maw.

"Aie, do tell my aunt that I will visit when I can. And to take care of my baby cousin."

"I will, and take care." Midnight spoke as the two vanished in a flash of light.
