Whats love got to do with it?
Chapter 114: 114. A loving mother given a helping hoof
Previous Chapter Next ChapterIt had been a couple days since Midnight had finished building Trixie's home, and taken care of his two lovely mares. He had visited Trixie few times to make sure she was comfortable and was still willing to open for him during his next performance in the Canterlot Cathedral, although slightly hesitant, she agreed to do the opening act. Midnight had made some serious plans for this performance as it would also have Sapphire Shores performing one of his songs during the performance. Sapphires name alone would ensure a sold out performance. Plus it would get Trixie's name out there and cause her to become a possible household name. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Today Midnight had gone by Trixie's home to check on her and to see how she was doing. After a short conversation he would come to find out that Trixie had planned on going for a picnic in the park with Twilight so that they could have a chat about some spells she was interested in learning. Twilight, being the studious unicorn she is, offered to teach Trixie a few spells. However there was a slight problem.
"Can you really go to Sugar Cube corner for me to get my order? I'm running late as it is." Trixie sighed, annoyed that she had taken so long in preparing the picnic basket that she had forgotten to pick up her order from The Cake's shop in town.
"It's no problem, but what is the order and where do you want me to meet you?" Midnight asked as they trotted out the door of Trixie's home.
"I had a large order of blueberry muffins commissioned just the other day, but with me waiting until the last moment to fix everything up I forgot to pick them up. Twilight and I are going to the park for a picnic to discuss some spells, I thought it would be nice to have a friendly outing to help our friendship out due to previous bad blood." She sighed looking to the ground as she floated the picnic basket beside her.
"No problem, I'm glad you are trying to make friends though. Twilight and the other elements are great ponies, having them on your side would be more than beneficial." Midnight chuckled. "Anyway, I'll go get the muffins and meet you two in the park in about an hour." He smiled down to the azure unicorn.
"See you there." She smiled back as Midnight broke into a gallop, taking off into the sky with a mighty flap of his wings.

After a short flight he had arrived in Ponyville just outside of Sugar Cube Corner and quickly making his way inside. Upon entering her noticed the short line of ponies coming from the counter and got in line to wait his turn. A few minutes passed by as each pony was served before he had made it to the counter.
"Heya Night, finally get a craving for something sweet today? We haven't seen you in almost a week." Mr. Cake chuckled.
"Well, you could say that. I'm here to pick up and order for Trixie." He smiled back.
"Alright, give me just a minute to gather them up." He said as he began to pull the muffins from the counter one by one. After a good few minutes Mr. Cake had overfilled a basket with the blue berry muffins and placed them on the counter. Midnight paid for them and began to head out of the shop. As he was exiting the shop he bumped into a light grey Pegasus with a blonde mane, a few bubbles adorning her flank as her cutiemark.
"Oh! I'm so sorry, I didn't see you. Are you alright?" Midnight asked seeing her yellow eyes looking off into two different directions.
"I'm fine Mister, sorry I *sniff* bumped into you. *sniff sniff* Do I smell muffins? *SNIIIIIIIIIIFFFF* BLUEBERRY MUFFINS?!" She gawked as her eyes temporarily aligned as she starred at the floating basket before her.
"Yes, they are. Would you like one?" He smiled as he floated one over to the smiling mare.
Ditzy gave a huge smile as she took the muffin with her forelegs while she hovered in front of the Alicorn. Just as soon as it was within her grip she took a large bite smiling as she munched it happily.
"Fanks Mifter." She spoke out spewing a few crumbs of the muffin out. Midnight gave a chuckle as he continued on his way to the park.

After a short time Midnight had arrived at the park and began to look around for the two ponies he was supposed to meet. Locating them nearby just under the shade of a large oak tree, he trotted over to them resting the basket of muffins onto the already set blanket.
"Hey girls, we having fun?" He smiled seeing their eyes light up as the basket was set in front of them.
"Thank you so much for getting them for me Midnight, Please sit and join us." Trixie smiled happily as she floated a muffin over to her, taking a bite out of it and giving a satisfied moan through the mouthful.
"Oh these muffins are just fantastic! I can't believe I have gone so long without having one." She sighed happily as she quickly finished off the muffin and bringing another to her side.
"I take it it's been a while?" Midnight said while cocking a brow.
"Almost an entire year actually. I haven't had the time to purchase anything other than a quick meal while on the road performing. Many of the places I've been to didn't have a confectionery shop that served muffins. Most of the shops in the cities I've visited quit making them due to them mysteriously vanishing overnight. I really hate that it has been so long since I've had one of these." Trixie spoke before taking another bite of her second muffin.
"These are really good." Twilight piped up as she finished her first muffin.
"So you two are learning a few new spells huh? I'm guessing since I don't see any books laying around that you two set me up again." Midnight smirked cocking a brow at the two giggling mares.
"Well, I had initially told Trixie that we would do a mind walk spell so she could learn what I already know." She paused as Trixie picked up.
"But since you're already here, it would be a terrible waste to pass up the opportunity to learn the accumulated knowledge you have in spells as you are now."
"I swear." Midnight sighed moving a little closer to the two mares and lowering his lit up horn. "You two and your thirst for knowledge." He chuckled just as they lowered their horns to his, a flash of light erupting around them.

As the light dispersed around them, the three ponies were now in the long hallway within Midnights head, Trixie looked around seeing the doors cascading down the long hallway, each with a different memory set. She walked along looking at each of the doors in wonder.
"Midnight, you have quite the collection of memories. All of these door pertaining to a specific event or set of events within your life. It is quite remarkable compared to some of the ponies minds I have been inside." Trixie smile still trotting along in aw, but stopped as she noticed the lack of the other two ponies. "Well aren't you going to come along so we can find the spell door?"
"This is your first time in my mind Trixie, Check this out." Midnight grinned as he spoke out. "Spells."
*click*
*whiiiiiiiIRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrr*
One side of the hallway began is slide as the door quickly came to in front of him, Trixie trotting back to his side as she looked up in shock at the numbers above the door. Twilight joining her as well.
"Fifty thousand and some change, not bad." Midnight chuckled.
"You have got to be kidding me!? You know that many spells?" Trixie asked in shock.
"I guess so. care to do the honors?" He smiled nodding to the door causing Trixie to walk up to it and give a gentle tug, pulling it open and causing a flood of information to spill out and through each of the ponies.
A few seconds passed as the information slowly made its way back into the door and closed. Trixie turned around looking to the two ponies before her as her eye began to twitch slightly.
"Trixie? Are you ok?" Midnight began just before Trixie screamed out.
"HOLY COW THATS-A-LOT OF SPELLS!" She smiled excitedly.
"Oh wow! I know how to do that armor spell you have done before Night." Twilight grinned.
"Cool, let's get out of here and have some lunch, you can try out some of the new spells to practice with you two." Midnight smiled as he released them all from the mind walk spell. The three blinked a few times before their vision returned to normal.
"Hey, did we eat all of those muffins?" Trixie piped up while looking to the now empty basket before her.
"No, I only ate two, how about you?" Twilight asked looking to Trixie.
"Two as well, Midnight?" She looked to the Alicorn with a questionable gaze.
"I didn't get to have one." He pouted looking at the empty basket. He gazed inside to see that even the crumbs were missing.
"Whoever took them didn't leave a trace behind." He sighed taking a deep breath of the once filled blue berry muffin basket.
"And I love Blueberry muffins to. I can't believe a pony would steal muffins from right under our noses, literally." He sighed just before a feather floated down from the tree above.
"What's this, a feather?" Twilight asked as she picked it up with her magic.
"Is that a grey feather?" Midnight asked as Twilight floated it over to him. "It is!"
Midnight stopped for a moment as he looked up, into the tree's canopy. Using his magic he floated himself up slowly as he began to look around for any signs of the muffin napper, finally resting his eyes onto some crumbs of said muffins along with a few small strands of blonde hair. He looked down to the two mares on the ground below as he spoke up.
"I know who the culprit is, I'll go find them." He said as he and the grey colored feather vanished in an array of light.
"I hope he won't be to hard on them." Trixie spoke up catching Twilight's attention.
"Why do you say that? I mean, somepony stole all of those muffins from you, aren't you the least bit angry?"
"Think of it Twilight, if somepony stole those muffins, and right from under our noses to top it off. Don't you think they are either crazy or just really hungry? If a pony is so desperate to steal food, they must be having a hard time."
Twilight sat there for a moment in realization. "I didn't think of that. I hope Midnight doesn't do anything stupid." She sighed.

Midnight reappeared above Ponyville with the feather, hovering in a single spot as his horn cast a tracking spell onto the feather. He released it as it began to quickly fly to its owner. He took off after it as it made a quick decent into Ponyville and stopped as it floated in front of a small two story house. He trotted up tot he door after landing and gave it a quick knock.
"Yes, who is...........it?" A young yellow mare with an orange mane trailed off as she answered the door seeing the dark Alicorn before her. "Oh my, to what do I owe the honor of having an Alicorn visit me today?" She smiled.
"I as wondering Ms......." He trailed off waiting for her to introduce herself.
"Carrot top, you majesty." She smiled giving a little bow.
"No need for formalities Carrot. I am Midnight by the way. I'm rather surprised I haven't met you before in my time here in Ponyville." He smiled, a little embarrassed.
"It's not a problem Midnight, what can I do for you?" She asked cocking her head to the side slightly.
"Ah, yes, I was wondering if a young Pegasus mare with a grey coat is here. I ran into her earlier and didn't get a chance to be introduce." He smiled for a moment before hearing a gasp come from the kitchen, then a loud crash.
"Yes, that would be my room mate, Ditzy Do, and she would be IN THE KITCHEN CAUSING HAVOC!" She shouted back to the kitchen.
"Sorry!" She shouted back.
"Ditzy! You have a visitor." Carrot spoke up as she walked toward the kitchen with the Alicorn in tow.
"Ok, who is..........it?!" She paused as her wings shot out, her eyes focusing on the dark Alicorn before her.
"Hey there, I think you left something behind earlier." He smiled down to the whimpering mare as he pulled out the grey feather that he had found earlier.
"You....... know about..........what I did?" She spoke as her eyes began to well up slightly.
"Yes I do, so are you going to tell me why you took them? I'm sure you couldn't have eaten all of them that quickly." He said as he followed her into the kitchen seeing the basket of muffins on the table. A younger looking light purple/pink mare with a two toned purple and light purple mane, sitting at the table eating one of the muffins. She stopped as she looked up to the Alicorn and then to Ditzy.
"Momma?" She asked looking to Ditzy.
"Momma?!" Midnight spoke in surprise looking to Ditzy as well. "But you don't look much older than some of my friends." He spoke in shock.
"I'm adopted ya big dummy." Sparkler spoke out causing Midnight to look at her with some surprise.
"Alright then, so what are we going to do about this little incident.........." He stopped as he heard a tiny voice pipe up from behind the basket of muffins.
"Mommy! These muffins are really good." Dinky spoke up as she jumped onto the table grabbing another muffin and taking a large bite out of it only to make her cheeks puff out. She gave a little giggle smiling to Midnight as she munched away happily. Midnight cocked a brow to Ditzy as she began.
"Dinky is my foal. Sparkler is her older sister that I adopted some time ago when she was still little. I'm sorry for taking your muffins............ Just take them and go, I'll find a way to pay for the ones that were already eaten." She sighed causing Carrot Top and Sparkler to look at her in shock.
"You didn't steal those from him did you?" Carrot asked in complete shock seeing Ditzy nod. "But why? I thought you were getting plenty of hours at the post office."
"They cut my hours a lot because of a new spell that lets ponies teleport mail directly to the intended party for a few extra bits. The letter or package gets delivered instantly without fail, and with me always loosing packages or letters, the office cut my hours to almost nothing. I've looked for other jobs but nopony will hire me because I'm such a klutz." She sighed.
"So you took them to feed your children then huh?" Midnight asked as the room was greeted with a loud gurgle from Ditzy's stomach.
"And your starving yourself to keep them healthy and fed." Midnight sighed.
"Is that true Momma?" Sparkler spoke out in worry seeing her mother nod.
"Well we can't have that." Midnight spoke up catching their attentions. "Come with me everypony. I'm going to fix all of this." He smiled causing them to look at each other in worry.
"Where are we going?" Carrot asked as they left the house, following the Alicorn.
"Right down the street." He smiled back to them as he picked up pace.
They arrived at a small diner that he had visited quite often. He took a seat in a booth in the far corner along with his four guests.
"I can't pay for all of us to eat here, nor can Ditzy." Carrot spoke up feeling slightly embarrassed about her money situation.
"You don't have to, I'm going to." Midnight smiled causing them to gawk.
"Even after I....." Ditzy stopped seeing him raise a hoof to silence her.
"You only did what you did to help your children, Had it been for a selfish reason then I may have been angry. Although I don't condone stealing, what you did was not that. It was merely providing for your children through any means necessary. I can already tell your a great mother by doing this." He smiled causing Ditzy to give a sniffle before a light sob left her.
"Thank you........ for not being angry with me.... *sniffle*"
"It's alright, now how about we all get some food huh? Order whatever you want." He smiled causing them all to smiled widely.

After Plum had arrived at the table to take the order she was more than surprised at the amount of food that had been ordered. It took a goo twenty minutes and several trips along with adding a second table to the current one to fit all of the food onto it. They all sat there drooling over the food wondering where they would start, that was until Dinky dove face first into an apple pie causing them all to laugh. It took a good hour to eat most of the food on the tables, each pony sitting back in their seat giving a contented sigh as the looked over their pudgy bellies. Ditzy falling back into the seat as her eyes closed and a light snore began to escape her.
"I guess mommy was really hungry." Dinky piped up as Carrot was cleaning her face with a wet napkin.
"I guess so." Carrot giggled watching the grey Pegasus smile as she snored softly.
After wrapping of the rest of the food, Midnight placed the sleeping Pegasus onto his back and floated the food along with his magic as they all trotted back to their home just down the street. They arrived quickly, entering the house and heading into the kitchen to put away the leftovers. Midnight placed Ditzy onto the couch just before entering the kitchen. The two children have a yawn before heading to bed leaving Carrot Top and Midnight alone in the kitchen.
"I'm sorry for what Ditzy did earlier. Had I known that she was having a hard time I would have offered to take up the slack." She sighed as she took a seat at the table. Midnight doing the same.
"Well, you won't have to worry about that. I you think they are having even the smallest of trouble, let me know. I won't let anypony starve themselves or have a family suffer if it is within my power." He smiled as his horn lit up and a small bag floated from it onto the table with a small tink as it landed.
"What's this?" Carrot asked looking at the bag as Midnight got up heading into the living room, stopping as he watched the grey wild eyed Pegasus snooze away.
"It should keep them afloat for some time. Don't worry about it. Think of it as a gift from a friend who just wants all of his friends to be happy and healthy." He smiled before heading out the door.
Carrot smiled to him before she opened the small bag to see around twenty gold bits resting inside. She gawked in disbelief at the amount of money she was holding. She rushed to the door looking out to see Midnight giving a wink and a smile just before taking flight into the air.
"Heh, I guess all stallions aren't bad after all." Carrot smiled as she closed the door.

Midnight arrived back at Sugar cube corner to get a new basket of muffins before heading back to the library. Stepping inside he saw Trixie and Twilight casting a few spells back and forth to practice.
"Hey girls, got your muffins here." He smiled as he placed them in the kitchen.
"Did you find out where they went? And what took you so long?" Twilight asked looking at him with a curious expression.
"Everything is taken care of. Don't worry." He smiled as she trotted up to the two unicorns.
"Well, at least we have a snack now." Trixie smiled.
"Yup, and a guinea pig as well, let's try out some of those spells we learned on him." Twilight chuckled as her horn lit up.
"Why must my torment never end?" Midnight sighed just before he was hit with a spell.
